Editing techniques
BY DANIEL
Crossing the Axis
 When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two
subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called
a reverse angle.
J Cuts and L cuts
 A J cut, also known as a split edit, is an edit transition from one shot to
another in film or video, where the picture and sound are synchronized but
the transitions in each are not coincident
Cutaway
 In film and video, a cutaway shot is the interruption of a continuously
filmed action by inserting a view of something else. It is usually, although
not always, followed by a cut back to the first shot, when the cutaway
avoids a jump cut.
Cross cutting
 Cross-cutting is an editing technique most often used in films to establish
action occurring at the same time in two different locations. In a cross-cut,
the camera will cut away from one action to another action, which can
suggest the simultaneity of these two actions but this is not always the
case.
Match cut
 It is a cut within a scene that makes sense spatially. This can be between
two different objects, two different spaces, or two different compositions
in which an object in two shots graphically match
Jump cut
 A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the
same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly. This
type of edit gives the effect of jumping forwards in time.
Editors cut
 An editor's cut of a motion picture is made by the film editor on their
own, or working with the film director. The editor tapes together the first
cut of the film, the editor's cut, arranging the separate takes into a
coherent story according to the plan communicated by the director.
Directors cut
 a version of a film that reflects the director's original intentions, released
after the first studio version.
Final cut
 Final cut privilege is a film industry term, usually meaning the right of a
director to decide how a film is ultimately released for public viewing.
Flash Cut
 Fast cutting is a film editing technique which refers to several consecutive
shots of a brief duration. It can be used to convey a lot of information very
quickly, or to imply either energy or chaos.
 Fast cutting is also frequently used when shooting dialogue between two
or more characters, changing the viewer's perspective.
Subliminal cut
 A cut consisting of a few frames which zip by so fast that the viewer is only
subliminally aware of it.
Line cut
 Tape of the switches from one camera angle to the other that the multiple
cam director called out as the show was shot.
