The phylum Chordata is characterized by four defining features in its members: 1) a dorsal, hollow nerve cord, 2) a dorsal notochord to support the body, 3) a post-anal tail at some stage of development, and 4) seven pharyngeal clefts at some stage of development. The phylum is divided into three subphyla, with the subphylum Vertebrata further divided into 10 classes that include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and various fish classes.
