Coca-Cola implemented a data warehouse and analytical software from Teradata Corp. to gather data from their vending machines. The system collects both historical and real-time data on sales, product outages, short changes, and machine malfunctions to trigger alerts. A pilot test in 2002 connected all vending machines to a wireless network, resulting in more accurate demand forecasting, quicker problem identification, a 10% increase in sales, and 46% reduction in overtime and other costs. Coca-Cola plans to expand this enterprise data warehouse solution across their entire network of over one million vending machines in Japan to realize further cost savings and higher revenues.
