Energy is one of the largest costs for process facilities. While operators can save significant money with minimal impact to production, they often lack structured and automated digital technologies to identify and sustain performance improvements. The situation is further exacerbated by the lack of inconsistent data and inaccurate tools. This presentation will showcase how a process facility combines real-time data, site-wide digital twin, and proprietary analytics in a digital energy management solution to deliver up to 15% sustainable reduction in facility energy costs and carbon footprint. Performance gaps are automatically identified and broken down using a best technology benchmark to highlight improvement areas in real-time. Daily facility energy improvement opportunity lists are provided for operators to maximize value and track the efficacy of planned capital projects with accurate projections so operators can make faster informed decisions for capital allocation throughout the implementation cycle.

Introduction to IBM Watson IoT for Predictive Maintenance and Optimization with Maximo
Speaker: Andrew Condos, IBM
Overview: Optimizing asset performance is crucial to the cost effective and efficient operation of asset-intensive organizations. Scheduled maintenance procedures help to achieve this goal, but the key to unlocking real productivity improvements is in predicting how an asset operates over its entire life-cycle.
This session will introduce you to how companies are using IBM Watson IoT Predictive Maintenance and Optimization with Maximo to identify and manage asset reliability risks that could adversely affect plant or business operations. IBM PMO with Maximo applies machine learning to prescribe actions based on predictive scoring, identifies factors that positively and negatively influence asset health and delivers a detailed comparison of historical factors affecting asset performance.
The Energy Management Application enables plant personnel to monitor real-time energy flow and automatically notifies operators, supervisors and cost accountants of energy inefficiencies and non-compliance of configured policies. Application functionality includes recording consumption and demand at main and sub-meters for a wide range of energy types, including power, water, chill, gas, air and steam. For more information, please go through the slide.

Simulation programs have historically been run on PCs as fully self-contained programs. The UI, calculation codes and calculations themselves have all been part of the same program on the PC itself, perhaps reading and writing against databases, file stores on the network or reading process data from plant information management systems. But the computing world is changing and many programs are now hosted in the Cloud. Building and running simulation cases is done through a web browser and calculations run without UIs in wrappers called Containers, accessed through web interfaces. Data lives in cloud data stores. The immense computer power of the Cloud and ability to multi-thread simulation technology for parallel processing has opened up the potential to run tens of thousands of simulations, with hundreds at a time, over short time periods in an automated manner – in doing so creating unprecedented levels of codified asset knowledge able to be applied at scale. This presentation will showcase the huge potential for AI/ML algorithms to be utilized and scaled more widely when coupled/trained by first principles simulation, with major benefits in how simulation is used in: Automated model building, maintenance and continuous deviation analysis; Integrated reliability and predictive equipment availability with planning and optimization; and Equipment fouling propensity predictions.
Plotting the Path to Autonomous OperationsYokogawa1
Digital transformation (DX) is becoming the journey towards autonomous operations across devices, equipment, business and process systems. The application of advanced intelligence and cognitive technologies across operations, supply chain planning / scheduling / distribution, engineering, field operations, and maintenance is enabling adaptive and dynamic responses to market changes and asset disturbances. It also enables real time self-optimization of processes. High levels of industrial autonomy require a strong automation base layer; procedure automation; use of more intelligent sensors; remote surveillance and inspection through traditional approaches and with robotics and drones; digital twins; artificial intelligence (AI), and other analytics to monitor, predict, and mitigate process and equipment failures. This presentation will provide an overview of the levels of industrial autonomy and applications. Furthermore, it will show what companies can do today and in the future to achieve autonomous operations.

Daniel is a screenplay about a ten-year-old boy named Daniel, who, in 1960, runs away from home to be with his best friend, Lisa. Lisa and her mother run away from home to be free of her abusive father. Daniel wants to be by her side, so he leaves New York and spends the next ten years in Georgia looking for her. He doesn't find her; he finds music and a hard life. When Daniel returns home, he finds a place quite different from the one he left. He also finds Lisa, who had, after only a year of living in Atlanta, returned to New York to live with her father because her mother unexpectedly passed away. In this screenplay we are introduced to the people who have an effect on Daniel as he grows physically, mentally, and emotionally; people such as, his loving father, Steve, his hateful mother, Lacy, his caring therapist, Dr. Terry, his best friend, Lisa, his friends John and Jen, and the man he spends ten years with - in Georgia - a black french man named, Black Jeffrey. This is a drama, yes, but it is still a fun piece.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

- Example of how the transformation is effecting customer business outcomes
- Common challenges we faced that are good to keep in mind when making similar transformations in your industries.
1913 - James & Reuben founded Trane in La Crosse, WI
1973 – Oil Embargo drove up energy prices, and created demand for energy conservation (EMS was born)
1978 – Trane purchased controls company in Minneapolis to develop building management system
1980s – Start of HVAC system integration, however many proprietary protocols
1990s – Movement to open communication protocols (like BACnet and LonWorks)
2000s – Movement to remote IP connectivity – This includes modums to access BMS devices and pull data
Present – Advances in web based systems, wireless, cloud, mobile, analytics, visualization, etc… - This includes data being pushed, with remote access, analytics,, and advanced applications to support turning data into business value.
-- Throughout the history of Trane, it should be pointed out that the service relationship was and continues to be the foundation
- So what’s changing that enables the connected building transformation? This page helps illustration a combination of recent connected building technology innovations that are improving business results.
- Advanced web-based controls with open standard protocols, mobile access, and pre-packaged applications – makes it quick and easy to collect and act on data
- Cloud enabled remote monitoring for Intelligent Services with diagnostics, and predictive analytics – Makes it easier to combine data from many sources, run advanced analytics, and leverage centralized expertise to turn raw data into insights and actions.
- Improved visualization tailored to specific roles to drive action and link to business outcomes
- Finally, there is a “digital” transformation of business processes taking place to get closer to customers and align building system solutions with evolving business needs.
Once we have a clearly defined strategy that identifies the business opportunities and benefits, the data needs become clear, which then drives the specific tactics.
What data is needed, and the best source of data
What databases need to be integrated
Who owns the data and how best to leverage partners
How to display the data to visualize what information and take action
Energy efficient movie theaters that keep guests comfortable
Steel fermentation vats on brewer factory
Primary customer value comes from traditional benefits associated with comfort, energy savings and operational efficiency, however, in this example new benefits are being delivered in the areas of customer experience and increased sales
FYI - Ingersoll Rand is engaged in project connecting all our plants….Walking the talk – stayed tuned….Connected building approach – bringing our own plants up to speed right now to phase them in.
A new building that is properly commissioned will operate “as designed” and provides the benefits expected…
- Unfortunately, the reality is systems degrade over time for a number of reasons.
US Dep of Energy did a study of 600 buildings and found significant inefficiencies. Common causes of degradation result from Facility Use changes (reconfigured), Sensors not maintained, Alarms not set up or ignored, Schedule overrides and set points are changed permanently vs. temp
Even found devices were missing like temperature sensors needed for proper control, dampers or valves for adjustments, etc.
- Getting the benefits over time is supported by the connected buildings, but requires a complete life-cycle solution
Once you invest in the right equipment and systems, they need to be connected, monitored, analyzed, and presented in a way that enables action (which quite often requires feet on the street). – Components fail, dampers get stuck, filters & coils need cleaning, and occasionally a critters chew through ductwork, die in vents, or get tangled up in the wrong place.
Still the wild west with respect to IoT in buildings
- Too many standards - no “standard” way of addressing integration (BACnet, LonTalk, Modbus, Zigbee, etc.)
- Integration of disparate systems (HVAC, Lighting, Security, Meters, Grid,…)
- legacy communication protocols (mostly proprietary supplier specific protocols)
- fast changing technology, lots of new tools, and new skills,

IoT Security – Major concern of customers & suppliers – could be an entire presentation, to stay on track I’ll only highlight a few areas
1- Needs to be thought of and designed as a system solution – not just the product…
- “secure by design” involves the complete product life-cycle and associated governance
- Upfront security requirements/standards, software architectural risk assessments, code reviews, verification & penetration testing, installation and access control, updates to defend against evolving threats and more...
- Impacts data collected & how it is stored – Again gets at what is needed to deliver business value vs. what we can store, and who has access to the data that is available.
- Operations and IT need to collaborate – this is changing the role of facility managers who traditionally focus on equipment vs. IT.
- Proper application hygiene is critical – Awareness is still lacking, -- an analogy would be the best deadbolt in the world doesn’t matter if you hang the keys on the door knob. Of course we are trying make it fool proof and eliminate keys, but application configuration matters.
- It is a business issue, and needs to be a priority – Agree on standards, and prioritize the work to drive actions.
