I have made a project Dual Axis Solar Tracker using Arduino to align the solar panel towards the higher density of Sun light. To increase the unit area illumination of sunlight on solar panels, we designed a solar tracking electricity generation system. The design mechanism holds the solar panel and allows the panel to perform an approximate3-dimensional (3-D) hemispheroidal rotation to track the sun’s movement during the day and improve the overall electricity generation. This system can achieve the maximum illumination and energy concentration and cut the cost of electricity by requiring fewer solar panels, therefore, it has great significance for research and development. The solar tracker is used to orient various payloads toward the sun in order to trap the energy to the maximum extent. Payloads can be photovoltaic cells, reflectors, lenses or other optical devices. This tracker circuit finds the sun at dawn, follows the sun during the day, and resets for the next day. Here the payload is a Solar Photo Voltaic Panel.
Sunlight has two components, the "direct beam" that carries about 90% of the solar energy, and the "diffuse sunlight" that carries the remainder .The diffuse portion is the blue sky on a clear day. As the majority of the energy is in the direct beam, maximizing collection requires the sunlight to fall straight onto the panels as long as possible. This is where the tracker comes.
The project deals with design of solar power LED lighting system using Horizontal
Two-Axis Arduino based Solar Tracking System. The main goal of this project is to design
a very precise solar tracker. The project is divided into two parts; hardware and
software. Hardware part generally composed of solar panel, two-DC motors with
gearbox, LDR sensor module and electronic circuit. Software part represents the thinking
behavior of the system, that is how the system acting under several weather conditions. In
this work sensing of the sun position carried out in two stages primary and secondary.
Primary stage or indirect sensing performed via sun-earth relationship as a coarse
adjustment and second stage or direct sensing performed via set of LDR sensors as output
tuning to trims the azimuth and altitude angles. If the weather is cloudy or dusty, the
tracking system uses primary stage or sun-earth geometrical relationships only to identify
the location of the sun; so the system tracks the position of the sun regardless the weather
condition. The energy extracted from photovoltaic (PV) or any solar collector depends on
solar irradiance. For maximum extraction of energy from the sun, the solar collector
panel should always be normal to the incident radiation Solar trackers moves the solar
collector to follow the sun path and keeps the orientation of the solar collector at an
optimal tilt angle. Solar tracking system improves substantially the energy efficiency of
photovoltaic (PV) panel. In this paper, an automatic dual axis solar tracking system is
designed and developed using Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) and DC motors on a
mechanical structure with gear arrangement. Two axis solar tracking (azimuth angle as
well as altitude angle) is implemented through Arduino UNO controller based on Sun
Earth Geometry. The results indicated that the automatic solar tracking system is more
reliable and efficient than fixed one.

3. INTRODUCTION
Solar energy is a very large, inexaustable source of energy.
The power from the sun intercepted by the earth is
approximatel 1.8*1011 MW.
Solar energy could supply all the present and future energyb
needs of the world on a continuing basis. This makes it one
of the most promising of the unconventional energy
sources.
4. PROBLEM WITH SOLAR
Problem associated with the use of solar energy
is that its availability varies widely with time. The
variation in availability occurs daily because of
the day night cycle and also seasonally because
of the earth’s orbit around the sun.
To rectify these above problems the solar panel
should be such that it always receive maximum
intensity of light.
5. INTRODUCTION
Solar Tracker: -
Solar trackers are devices used to orient photovoltaic
panels, reflectors, lenses or other optical devices toward the
sun.
Since the sun’s position in the sky changes with the seasons
and the time of day, trackers are used to align the collection
system to maximize energy production.
6. Dual Axis Tracker:
Dual axis trackers have two degrees of freedom that act as
axes of rotation. These axes are typically normal to one
another.
Dual axis trackers allow for optimum solar energy levels
due to their ability to follow the sun vertically and
horizontally.
Here we have divide sun position into five areas and those
are EAST, WEST, NORTH, SOUTH, CENTER.
7. Arduino Severino Board
Arduino is a development platform for the purpose of
programing AVR microcontrollers.
Arduino Severino board is used to program 28 pin DIP
ATMEGA168 IC.
Here we are using 16MHz crystal for operating frequency.

The ATMEGA168 is a modified Harvard architecture 8-bit
RISC single chip microcontroller which was developed
by Atmel in 1996.

We are using LDR’s as a sensor to track the position of sun
or density of sun light.
Here we have made potential
divider with LDR and register.

12. Servo Motor:
Servo motors has three wires.
Among those 3 wires, 2 wires provide power supply to the
motor and one is used to send PWM signals {50Hz (analog
servos) or 400-500Hz (digital servos)} to the motor for
required shaft positions.
Servo shaft is rotated by an angle depending on the ON-
Time and OFF-time of the pulse.
Here we are using two servo motors- One for Horizontal
movement and another for Vertical movement.
