2. INTRODUCTION
Pharmacology is the study of the biological
effects that the chemicals in medical plants
have on cell cultures, animal and human
practical perspectives as follows quality
control efficacy, safety.
3. DRUG CONTAINING LIPIDS
Lipids are water insoluble, oily organic compounds
soluble in non polar organic solvents.
The fixed oils and fats are separated from crude
vegetable drugs or crude animal drugs and are used as
drugs in refined state.
Fatty oils are the resources of food materials of plants
(arachis oil, sesame oil, castor oil, rice bran oil, cocoa
butter, neem oil )
4. CASTOR OIL
Biological Sources :
Castor oil is a semi drying fixed oil extracted from the
seeds of “ RICINUS COMMUNIS LINN ”
The common names of the product are ricinus oil,
eleum ricins, oil of palma Christ, aamanakku oil
villakkennai.
5. COLLECTION AND PREPARTION OF OIL
Mature Seeds are collected, graded, cleaned, washed
and sun dried.
6. CHARATERISTICS OF OIL
COLOR : pale yellow and brown colored powder or almost colorless liquid.
ODOUR : Slight and Characteristics.
TASTE : First is bland but afterwards slightly acid and usually nauseating.
APPEARANCE : Transparent and viscous liquid.

8. USES
Castor oil puragative and emolliend and is used for lubrication
commercialy
It is used for external application
Ointment base
In case of food poisoning the use of castor oil in hospitals
Surfactants, cosmetics, paints, varnishes, grease, polishes,
printing in.
Used in contraptive creams and jellies
It is the chief raw material for the production of sebacic acid
9. NEEM OIL
BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :
It is an non edible fixed oil obtained from fully mature seeds
of AXADIRACHTA INDICA MELIN…
DESCRIPTION :
It is yellow colored oil with specific color and bitter taste.
It is soluble in ether and chloroform
CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS :
Oleic acid ( 50 % ) & Stearic acid ( 20 % )
Oil contains 2% of bitters, which are sulphur containing
compounds, nimbidin , nimbinim and nimbidol
The unsaponifiable part contains nimbo sterol ( 0.03% )
10. USES
Anti viral activity
As an non edible oil, it is used for soap making and for
manufacturing of oleic and stearic acids
It is indicated in rheumatism and also as a pesticide and
in medicated soaps for skin diseases.
It is also spermicidal
11. DRUGS CONTAINING VOLTILE OILS
The volatile principles of plan and animal sources that
are odoriferous, constitute volatile oils when exposed
to air at room temperature, they evaporate. Hence they
are called “ ethereal oils ”. As they represents essence
or active constituent of a plant, they are known as “
essential oils ”
Volatile oils are extensively used as flavouring and
perfuming agents in pharmaceuticals, food, beverages
and cosmetics.
12. TURPENTINE OIL
BIOLOGICAL SOURCE : Turpentine oil is the volatile oil
distilled from oleoresin obtained from pinus palustris,
p.rorburghi, p.maritima species of the genus pinus of
the family pinaceae.
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTURBUTION : Pinus is a perennial
tree turpentine oil is commercially produced in India
PREPARATION : “ bark – hack ”
13. CHARACTERISTICES OF TURPENTINE OIL
COLOUR : clear, colorless, slightly yellow
ODOUR : strong & characteristic odour
TASTE : pungent and bitter
SOLUBILITY : in soluble in water, soluble in alcohol
STANDARD
Weight per ml - 0.864 to 0.868g
Refractive index – 1.467 to 1.477
14. CHEMCIAL CONSTITUENTS :
Turpentine oil rich in tarpene and about 40 terpene
It mainly contains α – pinene ( 20 to 30% )
β – pinene ( 5 to 10 % ) δ – 3 canine, limonene
Camphene , β – phellandrene
USES :
Turpentine oil is chiefly used as an effective counter – irritant and rubefacient
in the form of liniments to be used externally
It has antiseptic and disinfectant properties
It is used in the manufactures of synthetic palm oil, insecticides, pints and
varnish
It is used in the treatment of chronic bronchitis
15. STORAGE
