3. Introduction
• Herbal creams are extracted from natural herbs.
• Herbals creams restore natural oils, nourish skin and functions to keep
the skin healthy.
• Herbal cosmetics can acts as barrier creams (protective cream, night
cream, healing cream, sunscreen cream) or as a Daily moisturizer like
lotion.
• In herbal cosmetics, both natural and Phyto-ingredients are used.
Natural products include oils, extracts, secretions etc. Phyto-
ingredients include pure constituents obtained by various process.
4. Formulation Consideration :
• Moisturizing agents
• Aloe gel (mucopolysaccharide-rich substances that have the
ability to form a protective coating over the skin, and
therefore have high moisturizing properties)
• jojoba oil, castor oil are used regulate the TEWL(trans
epidermal water loss).
• Calendula,Chamomile,honey leaf etc.
5. Surfactants
• Leaf surface exudates from Solanaceae plants of the genera
Datura, Lycopersicon, Nicotiana, and Solanum contains
Sucrose esters of fatty acids (SEFAs) which acts as nonionic
surfactants.
• Saponins are glycosides of triterpenes, steroids, or steroid
alkaloids with high surfactant properties.
• Examples soapwort plant, ginseng, ButchersBroom,
Horsechestnut etc.
6. Thickening Agents
• Most common natural thickening agents include
polysaccharides such as carrageenan, guar gum, carob
gum.
• Chief components of plant cell walls are also
commonly used as viscosity enhancers such as pectin.
• Carnauba wax derived from the leaves of the carnauba
palm.
7. Penetration Enhancers
• The essential oils of eucalyptus ,wormseed and ylang-
ylang flower been tested as penetration enhancers.
• Terpenes and terpenoids.
• These compounds operate by modifying the solvent
nature of the stratum corneum, improving drug
partitioning into the tissue.
8. Preservatives
• A vast number of phytocompounds show antimicrobial
effects that can be exploited for preservation purposes,
including terpenoids, organic acids, oxygenated fatty acids,
aliphatic alcohols, polyols, and polyphenols.
• Glyceryl monoesters, such as glyceryl caprylate, generally
employed as moisturizing ingredients, also play an efficient
antibacterial role.
• Benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol, mostly active against gram-
positive bacteria, which can be obtained from balsamic
resins.

13. • Indian barberry(tree turmeric) as preservative.
• Glycyrrhizin glabara(liquorice) as skin whitening agent.
• Vetiveria zizanioides(Khas-Khas) as cooling agent.
• Saffron as antioxidants, skin lightening and skin softening
agent.
• Oil of sandalwood as perfume.
• Almonds are rich in vitamin-E, which nourishes and softens
the skin.
• Wheat germ provides hydration to the skin.
• Coconut water naturally moisturizes the skin.
14. Night Cream
Ingredients Quantity
Olive oil 45 ml
Aloe Vera gel 15 ml
Shea butter 15 ml
Beeswax 30 ml
Rosewater 15 ml
Lecithin 3.8 ml
Lavender oil 0.15ml
15. •Olive oil as antioxidant.
•Aloe Vera gel as moisturizing agent.
•Shea Butter as skin softening.
•Beeswax as emollient.
•Rosewater helps to maintain skin pH balance.
•Lecithin as moisturizer.
• Lavender oil in soothing and healing skin.
16. Basic Cold Cream
• Ingredients : Mineral oil, beeswax, Glycerine, olive oil,
marigold oil, avocado, almond, jojoba oil.
• Action:
• Olive and marigold acts as a natural emollient with effective
healing and soothing properties.
• Jojoba, avocado and almond oil nourish the skin keeping the
skin soft and smooth.
17. Aloe moisturizing hand cream
Ingredients Quantity
Rose water 15 ml
Aloe Extract 0.6ml
Almond oil 30 ml
Peanut oil 8ml
Coca butter 15ml
Olive oil 8ml
Anhydrous lanolin 4ml
Liquid lecithin 8ml
beeswax 4 ml
Tincture of benzoin 0.3ml
Aloe gel 15ml
19. •White hazel acts as an astringent to help shrink
skin pores, soothe skin and reduce inflammation.
•Sunflower seed oil is high in omega-6 (linoleic)
fatty acid and vitamin E which helps to heal the
skin and retain skin moisture.
•Lanolin acts as an emollient.
21. •Quinine oleate as sun screen agent(First made
available in 1935, United states)
•Olive oil as antioxidants and hydrating squalene
( highly-effective emollient and natural
antioxidant).
•Oil of cassia as aromatic agent.
•Refined peanut oil has moisturizing properties.
