The Pros And Cons Of Sex Trafficking
In 2000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, or TVPA, was passed to identify severe forms of
human trafficking, create harsh criminal penalties for offenders and provide support for victims. The
TVPA defines sex trafficking as a situation in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud,
or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age ( How
Porn Fuels Sex Trafficking ). The inclusion of the word coercion means that a commercial sex act can
be classified as sex trafficking as long as a victim is coerced or intimidated. The organization Fight the
New Drug identifies that there are often instances in the porn industry where the actor or actress is
threatened with lawsuits or charges ( How Porn Fuels Sex Trafficking ). Human trafficking isn t the
only illegal industry fueled by sexual violence and exploitation. The wide spread availability of
cameras in devices such as portable cameras and cell phones has made it easier to take secret
recordings of another s intimate body parts and other sexually explicit material without the individuals
consent or knowledge. Growing internet access has facilitated the nonconsensual distribution of those
images but the criminal laws in the United States have not stayed up to date with these developments.
Because of this, victims of revenge porn and nonconsensual pornography do not have adequate means
to seek justice. In a study conducted by Cynthia Najdowski at the University

Importance of High Frequency Trading
Introduction
What is HFT?
While there is no definite answer to what high frequency might be, it has been generally accepted that
they are the type of trades automated by machines using proprietary algorithms and trade at very high
speeds, often executing at least a few trades in under a second. HFT strategies can be broadly
categorized into 4 groups:
Liquidity Providence: Rebate Trading, Automated Market Trading.
Pricing Inefficiency Arbitrage: Scalping, Latency Arbitrage, Statistical Arbitrage
Predatory Trading: Latency Arbitrage Flash Orders, Quote Stuffing
Directional Trading: News trading, Liquidity Detection, Momentum Trading: One prominent strategy

This example is most glaring during market crashes because HFTs would permanently cancel their
orders and liquidity unexpectedly dries up when it is most needed in the market. For example, many
HFTs withdrew from the market during the 2010 flash crash and some even became liquid demanders
(A Blessing or A Curse? The Impact of HFT on Institutional Investors). As such, during crises, HFTs
could cause market dislocation to occur as they pull out from the markets and funds will not be able to
offload positions as macro news events build up, causing some to suffer huge losses.
(http://www.forbes.com/sites/richardfinger/2013/09/30/high frequency trading is it a dark force
against ordinary human traders and investors/).
Also, there are few HFT type market making presence in securities that have a relatively high bid
spread. This is because for HFTs to make the markets in less liquid counters, it requires them to hold
long term unwanted positions in the security thus making the cost of market making high. As such,
long term investors would still be sustaining a high bid spread ratio when trading in less liquid
markets.
Avoiding HFT
In regards to liquidity detection by HFTs, funds have also begun to not trade in large open markets
when they know it s difficult to hide large positions, preferably instead in using dark pools an off
exchange platform operated by brokers. But this method would cause funds not to have the best bid

The Language Of An Organization Essay
An association without a language specifically used for communicating is unfathomable. Workers in
an organization utilize language to express and empathize with others opinions, maintain
communication, take care of issues, learn and develop, decide, and monitor records. As the
globalization of business has made corporations and organizations with outposts throughout the world,
language boundaries have developed into many different issues that would have gone unnoticed on
account of domestic organizations, where representatives impart in their primary language. Given this
globalized business environment, it is crucial for multinational corporations to devise a primarily
spoken language. Throughout most of the world, that primary language used in companies and
business is English.
English is a lingua franca, or a common or bridge language as it is often called. Bridge languages are
primarily spoken languages across the world: English, Chinese Mandarin, German, etc. English is the
most prominent language spoken, having 1.5 billion speakers across the world according to Statista,
and Mandarin, the secondary language, has a measly 1.1 billion. This major difference in speakers has
developed the use of English as a major language in trade. Many companies are undergoing a process
termed Englishization which is the process of making one s company soley process in English. This
process is used by companies seeking to join the global market, and has been used to create a

Chicago Style Pizza In The Chzech Republic Essay
Introduction Steve Kafka is an American born citizen of Czech origin and a franchisor for Chicago

Even though he has some basic knowledge about the Czech Republic, he still anticipates some
difficulties at the new location in Prague. He knows his decision is not without risk but is ready to

Czechs value education, cleverness, social standing, modesty and humor. Czechs are considered to be
individualistic and may be stubborn when it comes to stating opinions or wishes. They emphasizes
conformity and cooperation and hold community leaders in high esteem. To show respect Czechs use
a person s title and last name. Maintaining eye contact is also important to Czechs when in
conversation. When it comes to eating habits, Czechs eat three meals a day and on Sundays the main
meal is lunch with just a snack for dinner. Plates are usually prepared in the kitchen and brought to the
table, serving the head of the household first unless guests are present. Conversation is limited unless
the head of the household speaks or guests are present. Czechs generally do not dine out often and
during the day they eat at work. Foods like hot dogs and pizza are considered to be snacks and are

Environmental Policies Of China And Brazil
China and Brazil have developed historically together but why does Brazil have more effective
environmental agencies than the China? Both nations are different politically and cultural, however
through their developments as nations their environmental policies are having different degrees of
success. These countries are partly free, but Brazil has informal institutions including the Catholic
Church that affects the political climate and has helped environmental agencies. China and Brazil have
historically had similar environmental policy specifically in UN talks. These countries have had their
own struggles with their environmental policy trying to have a balance of economic growth and being

As a communist state becoming more international acknowledged as a state China had to make major
changes as a government and it had to come externally. China began to manifest an awareness of
environmental problems in the early 1970 s (Ross, 810). This was because China had gained a seat in
the UN and was working with the U.S during this time. Right before the 1972 Stockholm conference
China had created a domestic agency that worked with environmental issues so that they had a voice
in the conference. This conference came to the existence of SEPA which had policies with emission
permits that was modeled by economically advanced countries such as the U.S (Ross, 812). SEPA was
a cost to the state and could restrain a growing economy which was not in China s best interest. Right
before the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development China and 41 other
developing countries made a declaration. This declaration acknowledged the need for international co
operation to promote environmental protection and sustainable development while demanding
financial assistance (Ross, 814). This was also mentioned by the top leaders of China that economic
development would reject in any interference with domestic politics for environmental policy (Ross,
814). China eventually reached a deal with a 9 year plan which shows that China is not against

How Did King James Influence Shakespeare
King James I of England once said, I can make a lord, but only God can make a gentleman ( King
James I ). King James I believed in royal absolutism and was also known as King James VI of
Scotland. He reigned as king during the life of William Shakespeare. As a playwright, Shakespeare
was greatly influenced by King James. He alluded to the king in many instances and wrote his plays to
favor the king. One of the most notable influences of King James is found in Shakespeare s play
Macbeth. While writing Macbeth, William Shakespeare was influenced by King James as seen in
multiple allusions to King James reign. The play Macbeth is enriched with allusions to King James. To
begin with, an allusion is found in Act 4 Scene 1. On page Shakespeare

Reza Shah paid a visit to Ankara to benefit from Ataturk s experience.
The intentions of Reza Shah were the same as Ataturk s intentions in turkey; he was working on
paralyzing the role of Islam in the society and on banning the hijab among other things. Reza shah
then forbade the Imam Hussain consolation gatherings. After he banned clerics from wearing turbans
in 1935 and forced them to wear western style clothing, in 1936, he officially banned hijab and later
on stopped working by the Islamic calendar. He also gave his official orders to stop condolences
rituals in Ashura (10th day of the holy month of Muharram) and banned Friday prayers speeches and
banned religious teachings at schools. For her part, Reza Shahs wife entered the Maisuma mosque in
Qom without wearing the hijab, and when the mosques servant asked her to put on clothes that are
suitable with her entry to the mosque, he was brutally beaten by her bodyguards. Among all things,
Shah Reza was preparing his son Mohammed Reza to assume power after him. So for that reason, his
son studied at the military school in Iran and then continued his education in Austria. After he
returned, he started to deal with politics under the supervision of his father who was always supporting
him.

Solving the Foreclosure Crisis- Decrease Interest Rates,...
Foreclosure is an important issue in the United States and needs to be ended or decreased rapidly as
soon as possible for the sake of America s economy. The foreclosure of homes has decreased the state
of the economy, and rendered millions of Americans homeless. There are four key solutions that will
stop foreclosures in the United States and able millions of American to keep their homes. The first
solution is having banks lower their interest rates for all citizens who are in financial need of an
interest rate deduction. The second solution is creating jobs that are able to sustain through an
economic crisis. The third solution is for states and towns to conduct public seminars on how to
manage and budget ones finances during financially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The disadvantages of having banks lower their interest rates are, people may feel less obligated to pay
their mortgage payments on time because the interest rates are lower, despite the jobs that are
available through people owning homes there still may not be enough jobs to go around causing there
to be very little change in the amount of homes in foreclosure. Creating jobs that are able to sustain
through an economic crisis will stop foreclosures because if citizens lose their jobs in an economic
crisis they will be able to quickly find another job. This would be beneficial in the fight to end
foreclosures because people would have the funds to pay their mortgage and any other financial
obligations. How one would go about creating new jobs is by developing new technology, products,
and services that would change the way people live their everyday life while helping them to save
money. Hybrid vehicles are an example of a new technology that has currently kept and created new
jobs for citizens in the U.S. Hybrid vehicles are perfect examples of a new technology that has
changed the way people live their life while helping them to save money. There are two types of
hybrid vehicles such as, hybrid electric vehicles (HEV s), and plug in hybrid vehicles (PHEV s).

Understanding Labor Relations And Collective Bargaining
Understanding Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining In the video, Understanding Labor
Relations and Collective Bargaining , Donald Carty, CEO of American Airlines at that time, expresses
the disappointment of the many executives in a union environment face in regards to labor costs.
Shortly after this video, Mr. Carty had announced executive retention bonuses and pension protection
right after most union members had already voted to accept over $1 billion worth of wage and benefit
concessions (Zellner, 2003). Needless to say, this didn t brief too well to the point that two of the three
unions were calling for new votes (Zellner, 2003). Mr. Carty claimed that it was merely to keep the
company out of bankruptcy. So, if the labor costs were part of American Airlines restructuring before
the contract negotiations as Mr. Carty had stated, what other preparations would have the company
took prior to the negotiation process? What federal government agencies were involved in the labor
relations? And what type of response would be expected from the unions that represent American
Airlines employees after comments such as the ones Mr. Carty stated? Preparations Prior to a
Negotiation Process Preparation for any negotiation should start with a number of steps designed to
develop your negotiating strategy (Lynn, 2002). The company should have reviewed union agendas
from previous negotiations, if there were any. This would have allowed them to analyze arguments

War had started almost five years ear, on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. England
and France had promised to defend Poland. But they were unprepared to fight, and as a result they
were terribly beaten. by the next spring, France had fallen into German hands. The British army had to
flee the Continent and escaped from the French port of Dunkirk with frightful losses. In the summer of
1940 the Germans, with their allies, the Italians, controlled all of western Europe. The German air
force began its attempt to bomb the British Isles into rubble. Nevertheless, the British began to think
about getting back onto the continent. They started planning an attack across the Channel even though
it seemed more likely that they would become the invaded rather than the invaders. Hitler threatened
to invade England. He went so far as to assemble a fleet of barges along the French coast, planning to
use them as assault boats. But he hesitated because he realized the risks of an amphibious attack. Also,
he knew that the British navy would destroy itself, if necessary in an attempt to smash a German
invasion fleet. Still the idea was tempting. The British knew as well as Hitler did that if the Germans
could make the landing successfully, England would be lost. Meanwhile, Royal Air Force fighter

Beloved By Toni Morrison Literary Devices
There are always multiple interpretations of a text that depend on the reader s experiences. Words
work the same way yet, readers want to find the correct interpretation. Toni Morrison writes in her
foreword for Beloved that in order to render enslavement as a personal experience, language must get
out of the way (xix). The foreword sets up the reader to grapple with the fact that Morrison wants
them to view the text through more than one lens, lenses that may not come from their personal
experiences but still valid lenses, and to experience the text through these many perspectives.
Morrison comments on a reader s desire for a singular lens through Sethe, Paul D, Baby Suggs and
Denver s different meanings of the word tree. Based on her experiences the word tree represents the
past and death for Sethe. In Sethe s memory she remembered boys hanging from the most beautiful
sycamores in the world. It shamed her remembering the wonderful soughing trees rather than the boys.

participants from all of their anger and pain. Yet after Schoolteacher and his men came Baby Suggs

Suggs believes she was punished by God when they came into her yard, her safe haven, and began to

Essay On Legislative History Of IRCA
Legislative History of IRCA
The prospect of employment in the United States has always been somewhat of an economic magnet
drawing people in with the hopes of financial stability. With the rail road, world war II and agricultural
work force demands, immigrants saw opportunities for more money and a better way of life. These
events in our history along with others, have caused an increase in undocumented immigrants. As the
immigration population started to increase American Citizens began to worry about the impact this
would have on the economy.

Congress s lack of actions to pass the legislation led to establishing a bill that would create the Select
Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy (SCIRP). Then in 1981 Reverend Theodore
Hesburgh, who was the commission chair for SCIRP made some suggestions that were similar in
approach for penalties against employers hiring illegal immigrants, also granting amnesty once to
illegal immigrants, but allowing a modest growth with legal immigration. At this time President
Reagan had barely taken office and stated he would support a compromise on immigration that was
suggested by the Hesburgh Commission. The following year in March 1982, there were two
Commission members that introduced the first versions of what would be IRCA to Congress. They
were Senator Alan Simpson and Senator Romano Mazzoli, which it became better known as the
Simpson Mazzoli Act. IRCAs introduction into Congress was the initial step to the laborious process
to become a bill, but in the 97th Congress the bills died with the House of Representatives. In 1984
just two years after IRCA was first introduced in Congress and failed to pass within the House of
Representatives, it was reintroduced with the 98th Congress, but failed again to pass due to
disagreement within the House and the Senate. This piece of legislation dealt with an abundance of
opposition coming from powerful groups. Immigration advocates advised there would be
discrimination against Hispanic workers.

The Nuclear Of Nuclear Weapons
Before the Second World War, nuclear weapons did not exist. However, by the end of the Second
World War, this was not the case. The United States initiated a top secret program code named the
Manhattan Project. This project brought some of the greatest minds of the world together with the goal
of developing nuclear weapons. The United States successfully tested its first nuclear bomb in New
Mexico on July 16th, 1945. Three weeks later two atomic bombs had been dropped on the cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, the only use of nuclear weapons in wartime. The atomic age had
begun and the race to acquire nuclear technology for peaceful and non peaceful purposes started
around the globe. The United States was the first and only state to posse nuclear weapon but that has
changed over the last seventy years. Currently the United States, Russian Federation, United
Kingdom, France, Israel, India, Pakistan, China and North Korea have active nuclear arsenals.
Attempts to limit, or stop the spread of nuclear weapons immediately, emerged after the first tests in
New Mexico. This paper will look at the effectiveness of efforts to stop nuclear proliferation from a
Liberal and Realist perspective, and will argue that Realism present the more appropriate approach to
the international system due to its explanation of anarchy, cooperation, and power.
The fear of the spread of nuclear weapons sparked unprecedented international cooperation in terms of

How The Gospel Changed My Life
It s truly been an interesting week, and typically it is for me. Never a dull moment when you re on the

what I believe to be true and know to be right, as well as information about the gospel with my

Moliere s Tartuffe and the Religious Hypocrisy
Moliere s Tartuffe and the Religious Hypocrisy
Moliere s Tartuffe is a satire based on religious hypocrisy. Every character is essential in Tartuffe. All
of the characters play an important role, but it is easy to say that Tartuffe and Orgon are the main
characters. First, we must know the definition of satire. According to the Merriam Webster Online
Dictionary, satire is defined as literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn (
satire ). In other words, a satire is defined as literary work that uses humor to point out the foolishness
of a person or just in human nature. Religious hypocrisy can be self defined as a false assumption of a

Sheephead, Blacksmith, and other small fish. Before snorkeling you can wear a wetsuit. Wearing a
wetsuit helps with floating and you stay warmer. While snorkeling you have to wear a snorkel. The
snorkel helps you breath and see underwater because while you are snorkeling you want to see the
fish.

This activity is amazing and the hike up is surprisingly easy. Before the hike be prepared with hiking
shoes and water, the weather is usually sunny. The hike up is stunning, you will see some animals.
While hiking take time to look at the trees, they are astonishing. When hiking, as you look down you
can see the Garibaldi fish. Once at the top of the mountain the views are breathtaking. When you look
forward you can see the beautiful aqua and turquoise waters, with bright orange Garibaldi fish.
kayaking Kayaking is another fun activity and I would definitely recommend it. You will kayak all the
way to a rock out in the ocean. Before kayaking the leader will teach you how to steer the kayak using
the paddles. Just in case you do fall in you will be provided with a life jacket. When your kayaking
you will be able to see the Garibaldi fish and the kelp forest. When you re close enough to shore you
can stand on your kayak and the possibility of you falling in is high.

Bank Loans
BANK LOANS statistics project on bank loans
1. Introduction
This study has been conducted in order to obtain some extra information regarding credit retrieval
from banks. We have collected data from 120 people which have contracted bank loans, by asking
them to answer our questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 15 interconnected questions we
consider relevant and might help interpret the results better.
In a loan, the borrower initially receives an amount of money, called the principal, from the lender,
and is obligated to pay back or repay an equal amount of money to the lender at a later time. The loan
is generally provided at a cost, referred to as interest on the debt, which provides an incentive for the
lender to engage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

2.4. Children
Children seem to play a major role in the decision of getting a bank loan of a person or couple. Out of
the selected persons, only 27 did not have any children and most of them were in our youngest age
group, fact that is understanble considering the implications that raising a child has. Most people had
one or two children, but there were two cases in which the person had more than three children.

2.5. Education level
As expected, the education level had a major impact on the number of loans accesed. The wining
category was the bachelor degree one, as people from this group have a higher level of education and
are prone to have better jobs, thus having more chances in receiving a loan from a bank. Furthermore,
they are the ones that require more money for investments, which usually comes from banks. The
sutyd revealed that 67 people with a bachelor degree had a loan, thus more than 50% of the total
interviewed subjects.
On the other hand, there were 23 people who had finished high school and responded positive,
showing that loans for personal needs attract customers.

We Grow Accustomed To The Dark Literary Devices
Literary Device #1: Diction Diction: The choice of a particular word as opposed to others. The word
choice a writer makes determines the reader s reaction to the object of description, and contributes to
the author s style and tone. Example: We grow accustomed to the Dark / The Bravest grope a little /
And sometimes hit a Tree (1, 13 14). Dickinson, We Grow Accustomed to the Dark Context: In We
Grow Accustomed to the Dark by Emily Dickinson, people leave their neighbor s house and step in
the darkness of the night. They walk with steps of uncertainty until they reach the road and their vision
adjusts. But then, there is no light and it is completely dark. The braver people attempt to walk around
and they end up hitting a tree. As time goes on, the dark changes and it is easier to see again. Concept:

The Transatlantic Slave Trade, The Most Honourable King...
To your royal highness, the most honourable King George III of Britain, I am writing to you to inform
you of the great success and benefit that slavery has to our great and rich nation. Britain has been a
great beneficiary of the transatlantic slave trades lucrative process and labour. As you probably are
already aware, the triangular trade, as we noble gent call it, started in the mid fifteenth century due to
when the Portuguese gained interest in Africa for reasons other than its legendary supply of gold, to a
more profitable and attainable commodity; slaves. Now before I begin to regale you with the
tantalising tales of the transatlantic slave trade, I shall inform you of how it has successfully been
working for the past months. Due to our highly intelligent and superior nature, we employ the
triangular trade as our very efficacious programme. The transatlantic slave trade is composed of three
distinct stages. It involves three great continents and establishes a wonderful sense of unity and
harmony, as we are all benefitting from this affluent commercial and economic enterprise. Hence, it
could even be referenced in later history that this was the first system of globalization, which is a
righteous and virtuous mention. The first phase of this glorious route involves taking factory made
merchandises from Western Europe to Africa. These comprise of cloth, spirit, tobacco, beads, cowrie
shells, metal goods, and also guns. These merchandises are then traded for African

The Theme Of Loneliness
In A Clean, Well Lighted Place, by Hemingway and Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield what they both
have in common is the literary device theme loneliness. Theme is the general idea or insight revealed
in a narrative. These two stories are also different from the style of writing these two authors wrote
how to tell their stories.
Loneliness is introduced in the beginning of the short story A Clean, Well Lighted Place by
Hemingway. The deaf old man, with no wife and only a niece to care for him, is noticeably lonely. The
younger waiter, upset that the old man won t go home, shows himself and the old man in opposites:
He s lonely. I m not lonely. I have a wife waiting in bed for me (Ernest Hemingway pg. 373)

The old people sat on the bench, sill as statues. Never mind, there was always the crows to watch.
(Mansfield pg. 563) She sees all of the people, in their separate interactions, as being part of a stage
production. She thinks of the people in the stands, including herself, not as audience members but as
performers too. She thinks of herself as being a part of the production that if she were missing
someone she would notice. She tells the old man who cares little for her presence that I have been an
actress for a long time. (Mansfield pg. 564)
These two stories contrast the way they were written in A Clean, Well Lighted Place the author
Hemingway writes the story mostly in dialogue. The story is mostly the young waiter and older waiter
talking to each other about the old man. Last week he tried to commit suicide (Ernest Hemingway pg.
372) We only learn about the old man through conversation between the waiters.
The way Katherine Mansfield wrote Miss Brill she wrote a lot of details where you can imagine Miss
Brill enjoying her fur. She had taken it out of it s box that afternoon, shaken out the moth powder,
given it a good brush and rubbed the life back into the dim little eye. (Katherine Mansfield pg. 562) It
bought her back to life. But today she passed the baker s boy, climbed the stairs, went into the little
dark room her room like a cupboard and sat down on the red eiderdown bed. (Katherine Mansfield pg.

The Protestant Reform Movements On The European Continent...
Following the Evangelical reform movements on the European continent against the Roman Catholic
Church, England also experienced its own reform movements and reformists. During the fifteenth
century and the early sixteenth century, the English monarchy was Catholic, and thus opposed to
reform, prosecuting evangelicals as heretics. In the first half of the reign of Henry VIII, the second
Tudor monarch, this pattern continued under the administration of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey as Lord
Chancellor, and later with Sir Thomas More in that same office (Marshall 31). However, in 1526,
Henry VIII was in love with Anne Boleyn, and the delay of Pope Clement VII to grant him an

Despite at the time reassuring Katherine, saying, if it is a daughter this time, by the grace of God, boys

Katherine was valid (Weir, The Six Wives of Henry VIII 119). Sons were crucial in achieving a
peaceful succession in Henry s mind, since England had just emerged from the War of the Roses, a
civil war between the royal houses of Lancaster and York, when Henry VII, Henry VIII s father, took

Abstinence-only vs. Abstinence-plus
There are many problems facing teenagers these days. None are bigger than the issue of underage sex,
and all the issues stemming from it. The number of teenagers becoming sexually active, pregnant, and
contracting sexually transmitted diseases are rapidly on the rise. There is no simple fix, or easy
solution to this problem. Sex education should begin at home, and extend to include an effective
program in schools that reinforce a clear message of abstaining from sexual activity in addition to
informing students of the risks posed by engaging in sexual activity. The political, and religious
dissension on this issue has resulted in a procedural stalemate preventing schools from effectively

The ideal of what historian Anne Higonnet calls the Romantic Child, our modern image of a naturally
asexual, pure child, is at the heart of century long conflicts over sex education. By definition, the
romantic child s innocence depends on protection from sexuality (Talk About Sex 13). Parents, in
general, do not feel at ease thinking about their children having sex, nor do they want to encourage
them to do so. The fact that most parents are not comfortable talking about the subject with their
children only increases the importance of doing so in our schools. Opposition of the Abstinence Plus
program centers around the belief that by comprehensively informing students about sex, and
responsible practices, in addition to supplying contraceptives, will send a message that not only is it
okay to have sex but here have a condom to do it with. In some cases, they actually suggest the
importance of telling students that condoms are ineffective and do not work (Teenage Sexuality 205).
Over the past few decades, several attempts have been made to scare teenagers away from sex. In the
sex education video No Second Chance, a young man asks the teacher what if he does not to wait until
marriage to have sex. She replies, Well, I guess you ll just have to be prepared to die (Talk About Sex
117). The intended message was that condoms do not work in effectively preventing HIV. This is

During medieval times, a knight was expected to be loyal to those above him, and come serve them
when it was time to fight, and The great peers of the kingdom could call upon minor lords in their
dominions to come fight on their side, under one banner, but they all rallied towards the King, and
disobeying him was extremely frowned upon (Jokinen). Near the end of the middle ages, this loyalty
became a system known as Livery and Maintenance, and contributed greatly to the military aspects of
the Wars of the Roses. Livery and Maintenance was the practice of keeping large numbers of knights
on reserve, essentially a lord s personal standing army. These knights would wear the Lord s badge
and livery, which, in addition to payment for their service, gave them a sort of prestige, as long as their
lord was powerful. Since Lords could raise their own private armies, they had the choice to refuse
support to the king if they did not like him. This was a massive change in the structure of feudalism,
as standing up against the King was generally impossible without an army. The houses of Lancaster
and York would not have gotten anywhere against each other without the help of powerful landowners
like Richard Neville, sometimes called The Kingmaker. Livery and Maintenance gave the Noble class

Evaluate The Pros And Cons Of 360-Degree Appraisal
Evaluate the pros and cons of a 360 degree evaluation method.
Performance is evaluated, and information is provided to employees that enables them to reflect on
their performance and develop plans. The 360 degree approach allows a wider range of people to
evaluate and give feedback on an employee s performance. A manager might conduct a self appraisal,
as well as receive feedback from peers, subordinates, superiors, and even customers and clients. Some
advantages of 360 degree appraisal are that employees can get more than one perspective, and that
people who work closely with the employee on a day to day basis can give feedback on overall
performance, not just once a month or once a year. It is also a useful technique for meeting customer
needs. It is sometimes easy for members within an organization to lose sight of the customers
perspectives, and 360 degree appraisal brings the customers viewpoints into the larger picture. Some
disadvantages include the possibility of spiteful evaluations from disgruntled subordinates, especially
if evaluations are anonymous, coerced positive evaluations from intimidated employees, or misguided
evaluations from employees who are not knowledgeable enough about the job they are evaluating.

Maintaining Dominant Systems Of Sexuality
Normal is constantly used to oppress and silence those who do not fit under this definition constructed
by institutional forces within society. These institutions have been created to serve as building blocks
for society, to guide the public. Originally, these institutions were started to protect and create order,
but in today s world, they provide no protection. However, if an individual does not fit within the
system s socially constructed idea they are objectified for being different . This is especially clear
when it comes to sexuality. If society were to denaturalize gender and sexuality, then there would be a
way to look at everyone as unique, that normal does not exist because everything is historically and

Males were also given greater credibility than were females. Male and female adult characters were
also still clearly associated with activities traditionally associated with their gender (i.e. men were
associated with mowing the lawn, while women were associated with doing the dishes). Finally, they
discovered that ninety percent of commercials had male narrators, and that this was true even in the
case of commercials for stereotypically female products.
Another extensive study was conducted by the Canadian Radio television and Telecommunications
Commission, between 1984 and 1988. This study explored the portrayal of gender in Canadian
broadcasting, and included a subsection exploring the portrayal of gender in television advertising.
Some of their major findings included the fact that narrators were overwhelmingly male, and that male
characters portrayed in the commercials were twice as likely to be employed outside the home than
female characters. Female characters were also more likely to be involved in family situations,
especially in child care (CRTC, 1990). Turning to look specifically at television commercials aimed at
children, careful and extensive study has determined that commercials aimed at children are sexist in
their depiction of female characters (Signorielli, 1993). Focusing on the Saturday morning slot

Brahms First Symphony, An Angelic Alliance Of Flutes Essay
In Johannes Brahms first symphony, an angelic alliance of flutes hypnotizes the audience with delicate
notes that form a scenic melody. In the distance, I am blowing until my face turns blue into a large
goofy instrument that hardly anyone notices. When I picked up the tuba during my junior year of high
school, I quickly became accustomed to less glamorous musical parts, long notes of loosely buzzing
lips, and pages of paramount silence. Worst of all, playing the tuba never quite made me a ladies man.
Yet my short lived stint as a tubist sparked an appreciation in me for the humble instrument s
significance. Were it not for the deep rumbling of the tubas which mirror the melody step for step,
coloring the piece to a new depth, Brahms rich masterpiece would undeservingly sound hollow.
My relationship with technology greatly parallels my experience in the band room.
In my first two years at Howard University, I lived among flutes in Washington D.C. s technology
scene, attending hackathons and technology meet ups. Armed with a spoonful of programming
knowledge and a wave of enthusiasm, I seized every opportunity to grow through the people I
encountered. Although I learned plenty from them about powerful tools, what I took away as a part of
me was their reasons for loving tech. A desire to reduce traffic accidents in D.C.; a burning passion to
help former inmates re enter society; an urgent need for police accountability in minority
neighborhoods. The following year, I

Indentured Servants vs. Black Slaves
The Stepping Stones of Labor in America Throughout time, in all places, there is an upper class and a
lower class. During the 16th to 19th century in America people came from all over Europe. People
from Europe found America as an escape from their life; a new start. Some could not afford to take a
boat ride across the Atlantic with their whole family. Because of this, some people became indentured
servants. Later on, the South revolutionized America by bringing in black slaves and getting rid of
indentured servitude. Slaves generated the economy for the South, but was also the main cause of the
civil war. Both slaves and indentured servants were treated badly, however, black slaves were much
more expensive and had to work for life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the indentured servants had did their time depending how long their contract was, they were
given money, land and often a sustainable job. Black slaves were permanently slaves and didn t have
as much hope as indentured servants because they had no family and they knew that they were stuck
living their life the way it was forever. Also, indentured servants often had learned some economically
valuable skills, so when their contract was up, they were more prepared for the outside world, while
black slaves were not usually and were not let out. Indentured servants were slaves and dehumanized
during their time of their contract, but often had a better life because of what they learned from being
a servant and their reward. While both slaves and servants typically did similar work, slaves were
bought and put into work whereas indentured servants signed a contract and the owner didn t give up
any money value until the end of contract. During this time the cost of a black slave was about
130,000 dollars. This was a lot higher because this is when there was no more indentured servitude
and the South s economy relied on black slaves for cotton. Paying 130,000 dollars for a slave seems
like a bad investment, but they got the slaves for life and the slaves could reproduce and have more
slaves in the future. The biggest reason why black slaves were a better

Modernism In The Great Gatsby
Modernism and Realism reflected in Fitzgerald and Chopin
American Realism and Modernism are reflected in the authors and works we read through the
characters actions and the overall tones of each work. Both Chopin and Fitzgerald are celebrated
authors, known for their groundbreaking works during their lifetime.
Realism is a literary period where authors focused on making their stories and characters more
realistic and organic, reflecting on real life experiences, while Modernism is a literary period where
many authors reflected the disillusionment from the First World War in their works through the
creation of a new modern hero and the build a self theme. After World War I (also known as the Great
War), the nation no longer believed in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A well known work of Chopin s, A Pair of Silk Stockings , is short, sweet, and touches on many ideas
of Realism in its passages. The main character is Mrs. Sommers, a poor widow and hardworking
mother, falls under the lure of $15 and slips from her harsh reality to indulge in the lavish life she once
lived, [the money] gave her a feeling of importance such as she had not enjoyed for years . She longs
for the freedom and carelessness of her younger years, before she had to be smart with every cent for
the well being of her children and herself, but through her escape from reality and indulging in her
desires, we see her drift away from the smart mother who would not carelessly throw money around to
a woman who just wants to be free from the harsh reality of her life, even if it is just for a

British Youth Culture s Perception Of Drugs Essay
There is a common notion that drugs in the modernist era were used as a tool for youths to enhance or
escape reality; much of this statement is true, though this has been the case for most of history. The
unique aspect of British youth culture and its recreational use of drugs is that it produces a platform
for the normalization of the perception of an array of drugs. Since the mid twentieth century, the
prevalence of drug use among adolescents has witnessed a steady, upward curve; this may indicate an
actual increase in the number of participants using drugs, but more so reveals a more open, honest
mindset towards recreational drug use, despite the obvious health risks. Since the 1950s, British youth
culture s approach to drugs radically changed people s perception of drugs; it not only embraced
recreational drug use, but gradually normalized it over time. This has resulted in an open, casual
attitude towards a series of narcotics within British youth culture. This is credited to social, economic,
and political issues as well as the evolving leisurely activities, music and trends that took place during
the Mod era to today.
While drugs have always been a part of society, its perception and sense of casualness changed after
the Second World War due to economic, social, and political factors. Post war Britain (as well as
America) saw a parallel increase in both population and the economy, creating the Boom Generation
as well as a new consumerist society. This is crucial in

The Northern Ireland Marching Season
The Northern Ireland Marching Season
The marching season is where the Protestants of Ireland celebrate William of Orange s victory in the
Battle of the Boyne by marching through Northern Ireland via some Catholic areas. These marches
take place in July of every year and are usually peaceful. But sometimes they are violent. There are a
number of possible reasons why there is a tension between the two communities over the marches, for
example land, religion, politics, history and social division.
During the 16th century, James 1st and England started to take a closer interest in Ireland. They feared
Ireland because they thought that they could become a threat to their own power. This was mainly ...

But when the civil war in England had finished, Cromwell was eager to regain control of Ireland. So
he sent over soldiers from England to control Ireland again. He restored control of Ireland between
1649 50 but was ruthless. As a punishment for the rebellion, he ordered his soldiers to slaughter all
people, soldiers and civilians, in Drogheda and Wexford. Also, the Catholics involved in the rebellion
had there land taken off them and were forced to live in poor lands. Many of these people died of
hunger and disease. This was the start of Catholic hatred towards the English rule and towards
Protestants.
The next big event to happen was the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The marching season
commemorates the Protestant victory over Catholics at the Battle of the Boyne, so this event lives long
in both Catholics and Protestants memory. That is why this battle is one of the main contributors to
why there is still tension over the marches.
The Battle of the Boyne symbolises protestant ascendancy . It was the first time that the Protestants
stood up for themselves against the Catholics. The Battle of the Boyne was a fight between two people
and two religions. It was William of Orange from the Netherlands against James II. James became
king of England in 1685 but was expelled from the throne in 1688. Instead of leaving quietly and
forgetting about England, he

The Impact Of Sports On Sports And Leisure Activities
Section A Introduction Despite it being 2015, there are still many ongoing barriers which are
preventing many people of all ages, races, genders and social backgrounds from participating in sports
and leisure activities. Economically, some sports are just completely unviable to people from certain
backgrounds. Sports such as Polo are completely exclusive to a certain class of people, due to the
mass expenses required to get you started. Inner city families, some of whom may have a member of
the household unemployed would never be able to foot the cost of the bills to play Polo. Along with
the unfeasibility of the costs of certain sports, people are also being excluded from sport due to the
social side of the spectrum. Many sports are perceived as having gender ties and many children are
brought up to identify that a certain sport shouldn t be played by boys as it is a girls sport and vice
versa. This leads to a massive social stigma that is developed during the formative years of schooling
that influences children s decisions on what sports they decide to play. It can also be tied into many
cases of Homophobia in schools, where many homophobic slurs may be attached to a girl who enjoys
rugby, or a boy who enjoys gymnastics. Due to the low number of combination between the sexes in
many sports as children, this leads to a deficiency of integration as adults, therefore making it more
difficult to get involved in a sport as an adult, due to the sport being either male

Zen Buddhism And The Law Of Karma
The law of karma is so powerful that it governs everything in the universe, that is, according to
Buddhism and Zen, except the one who is Enlightened. When one is Enlightened, the law of Karma
isn t pertinent. The Enlightened one does, says, or thinks is through free will, an indication of essential
nature, and not the impact of past Karma. This is a one of a kind clarification by Buddha of the
invalidation of the law of Karma is essential. Enlightenment is a state of being that is free from the
habitual patterning and systematic identification processes of the human ego. The ego is a construct of
human consciousness that routinely makes a differentiation between what it chooses to identify as self
and other, or not self. The ego creates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason that reflection was singled out for the assignment of this school depends on the way that
the authentic Buddha accomplished edification (nirvana) through the act of contemplation. There are
essentially two strategies used in meditation practice in Zen Buddhism to assist the practitioner to
achieve the previously mentioned objectives, together with a basic breathing activity known as
perception of breath tally one is the kōan strategy and the other is called simply sitting, it is a single
act of Samadhi. They are the two fundamental schools of this type of the Buddha Way yet prospering
today in Japan. In the Rinzai school, the kōan technique is concocted to help the professional to end

the Chinese expression is thusly a transliteration of the Sanskrit expression Dhyana, nonetheless, Zen

Battered Women Are Exposed And Many Forms Of Intimate...
Abstract Battered women are exposed to many forms of intimate partner abuse. This paper will
explore the contributors of anxiety, depression, memory loss; the re experiencing of the trauma and the
disruption of interpersonal relationships; and some of the difficulties that battered women face when
trying to leave their abusers. I am going to sleep in my own bed in my home; as I sleep, a familiar
scent slowly starts to fill the air. I wake up in a cold sweat; I know he is there, in my house. I don t
open my eyes because I don t want to know how close he is, but I can tell he is still in the hallway; the
scent is not strong enough yet. I listen with all my might, hoping I can hear the carpet moving under
his feet or maybe I will hear his breath first. The carpet gives it away, he is entering my room; I can
feel him standing over me for what feels like a lifetime. I m so careful not to change the pattern of my
breathing for fear he will know I m awake. He turns and walks out. Now I m listening even harder,
and my heart sinks when I hear it. My mother s gasping breaths, I know he has her by the throat. What
do I do? I m only fourteen, by no means large enough or strong enough to stand up to him, so I stay
and pray he won t hit her again. Then the shouting starts. He accuses her of running around on him,
with her boss, the neighbor, and every other male she has come in contact with. He screams at her to
take off her clothes, he wants to see her

Huck s Contradiction in The Adventures of Huckleberry...
Huck s Contradiction in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
In Mark Twain s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Huck was a boy
who thought very little of himself, but had a huge impact on others. His
moral standing was based on what is easier, right or wrong. He lived the
way he wanted to live, and no one told him otherwise. He had the
adventure of a lifetime, and yet he learned along the way. Although Huck
has certain beliefs about himself, his actions and decisions contradict
these beliefs.
Huck may consider himself lazy, but in reality, he is a very hard
worker. At one point, Huck wants to get away from his father so he comes
up with a scheme to fake his death and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

shortened up one of the calico gowns and I turned up my trouser legs to my
knees and got into it. I put on the sun bonnet and tied it under my chin.
I practiced around all day to get the hang of the things, and by and by I
could do pretty well in them (41). If Huck was even remotely lazy he
would have just stayed on the island and enjoyed the freedom. His going
to town as a girl shows that he will do anything to get what he wants,
whereas a lazy person would try to take the easy route. A third time Huck
shows that he is not lazy is when he and two scoundrels, the King and the
Duke, are staying with the daughters of a recently deceased man. The King
and the Duke are trying to get the dead man s assets by pretending to be
his brothers. Huck goes through a lot of work to make sure the girls get
to keep their money: So, thinks I, I ll go search their rooms. So then I
went to his room and begun to paw around there. But I couldn t do nothing
without a candle, and I dasn t light one. So I judged I d got to.lay and

place I see to hide the bag was in the coffin. when we get down the river
a hundred mile or two, I could write back to Mary Jane, and she could dig
him up again and get it (133 135). If Huck was lazy, he would have just

Machiavelli The Prince Essay
In The Prince and Discourses on Livy, Machiavelli breaks from the precedent set by early political
thinkers. Machiavelli unleashes a critical attack on the Church both as an institution and also as a
belief system. Machiavelli blames the institution of the Church for interfering in politics which ends
regimes. He treats the popes as though they are secular leaders who serve as examples of what a ruler
should do to maintain power. He calls it corrupt. He then criticizes the religion of Christianity for
contributing to these problems and dividing Italy. Machiavelli first targets the Church as an institution
in The Prince. Throughout his The Prince, Machiavelli treats the Church as a state and the popes as
rulers of that state. One of the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Machiavelli has two areas of criticism. The first area indicating Machiavelli s criticism of the papacy
revolves around the expansion of the territory under control of the pope. He argues that, Alexander VI,
who, more than all the other popes there have been, demonstrated how much a pope, using both
money and arms, could get his own way (11, p. 37). Machiavelli depicts Pope Alexander VI almost
despotically since Machiavelli sees the pope as being able to get whatever he wants by force or
fortune. Machiavelli sees this as a trend in popes to follow such as Julius II who, had opportunities to
accumulate money of a sort that had not existed before Alexander (11, p. 37). Machiavelli places a
focus on the accumulation of wealth by the popes subtly implying that wealth was important for popes
at that time. Machiavelli concludes his criticism of this procession of the popes by commenting that he
hopes the new pope, Leo X, will increase that power but also make the Church worth of respect (11, p.
37 38). Machiavelli, like before, makes an implication about the Church, this time that it is currently

Coca Col A Soft Drink Invented By John Pemberton
TV ads back in the day would try to sell you a product and say why you should buy it. As time goes
on, companies got created with their advertisements, Some added edgy humor in order to sell to a
younger audience. Some even hired celebrities to be in the ad for the appeal. Also, if something
becomes mainstream, companies will take advantage of it by incorporating it in their products. For
example, Marvel became mainstream thanks to their cinematic universe movies. Their movies became
so successful that companies like Coke would ask to use their intellectual property in their ads. Coca
Cola is a soft drink invented by John Pemberton on January 29, 1892. Before Pemberton died, the
drink didn t reach any success because it was not marketed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is also a bit cheaper to buy. In the ad,it featured the Hulk and the Ant Man from Marvel. Both of
those characters are well known in the Marvel universe. Coke wanted to include those characters
because of their mainstream popularity. The Hulk had his own movie that came out in 2008 and was a
main character in the Avengers movies which, made more than a billion dollars world wide. The Ant
Man movie came out last year and was a box office success. Since then, these characters became
mainstream to the public. Coke wanted to take advantage of the characters because they know that
they will sell more Coke if they had the characters in their ad. It will make people want to buy coke
since their favorite superheroes are associated with the soft drink. For example, a kid might think Hey
the Hulk is drinking coke, I can be as strong as him if I drink Coke. this makes the audience want to
become like their favorite heroes. According to Signs of Life, Linda Serger wrote that Many of these
most successful films are based on...we identify with the heroes because...we wish we could do what
the hero does. (Serger pg. 387). Serger wrote that if the viewer is fascinated with the character in film
or tv and wants to be that character, the media is successful on what it wants to do. In the ad, it opens
up with Ant Man sneaking into Bruce Banner s (the human form of the Hulk) lab to steal his last Coke
Mini.

The TVPA defines sex trafficking as a situation in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age ( How Porn Fuels Sex Trafficking ). The inclusion of the word coercion means that a commercial sex act can be classified as sex trafficking as long as a victim is coerced or intimidated. The organization Fight the New Drug identifies that there are often instances in the porn industry where the actor or actress is threatened with lawsuits or charges ( How Porn Fuels Sex Trafficking ). Human trafficking isn t the only illegal industry fueled by sexual violence and exploitation. The wide spread availability of cameras in devices such as portable cameras and cell phones has made it easier to take secret recordings of another s intimate body parts and other sexually explicit material without the individuals consent or knowledge. Growing internet access has facilitated the nonconsensual distribution of those images but the criminal laws in the United States have not stayed up to date with these developments. Because of this, victims of revenge porn and nonconsensual pornography do not have adequate means to seek justice. In a study conducted by Cynthia Najdowski at the University ... Sex education should begin at home, and extend to include an effective program in schools that reinforce a clear message of abstaining from sexual activity in addition to informing students of the risks posed by engaging in sexual activity. The ideal of what historian Anne Higonnet calls the Romantic Child, our modern image of a naturally asexual, pure child, is at the heart of century long conflicts over sex education. Parents, in general, do not feel at ease thinking about their children having sex, nor do they want to encourage them to do so. The fact that most parents are not comfortable talking about the subject with their children only increases the importance of doing so in our schools. Near the end of the middle ages, this loyalty became a system known as Livery and Maintenance, and contributed greatly to the military aspects of the Wars of the Roses. Livery and Maintenance was the practice of keeping large numbers of knights on reserve, essentially a lord s personal standing army. These knights would wear the Lord s badge and livery, which, in addition to payment for their service, gave them a sort of prestige, as long as their lord was powerful. Since Lords could raise their own private armies, they had the choice to refuse support to the king if they did not like him. This was a massive change in the structure of feudalism, as standing up against the King was generally impossible without an army. The 360 degree approach allows a wider range of people to evaluate and give feedback on an employee s performance. A manager might conduct a self appraisal, as well as receive feedback from peers, subordinates, superiors, and even customers and clients. Some advantages of 360 degree appraisal are that employees can get more than one perspective, and that people who work closely with the employee on a day to day basis can give feedback on overall performance, not just once a month or once a year. It is also a useful technique for meeting customer needs. It is sometimes easy for members within an organization to lose sight of the customers perspectives, and 360 degree appraisal brings the customers viewpoints into the larger picture. Some disadvantages include the possibility of spiteful evaluations from disgruntled subordinates, especially if evaluations are anonymous, coerced positive evaluations from intimidated employees, or misguided evaluations from employees who are not knowledgeable enough about the job they are evaluating. British Youth Culture s Perception Of Drugs Essay There is a common notion that drugs in the modernist era were used as a tool for youths to enhance or escape reality; much of this statement is true, though this has been the case for most of history. The unique aspect of British youth culture and its recreational use of drugs is that it produces a platform for the normalization of the perception of an array of drugs. Since the mid twentieth century, the prevalence of drug use among adolescents has witnessed a steady, upward curve; this may indicate an actual increase in the number of participants using drugs, but more so reveals a more open, honest mindset towards recreational drug use, despite the obvious health risks. Since the 1950s, British youth culture s approach to drugs radically changed people s perception of drugs; it not only embraced recreational drug use, but gradually normalized it over time. This has resulted in an open, casual attitude towards a series of narcotics within British youth culture. This is credited to social, economic, and political issues as well as the evolving leisurely activities, music and trends that took place during the Mod era to today. While drugs have always been a part of society, its perception and sense of casualness changed after the Second World War due to economic, social, and political factors. There are a number of possible reasons why there is a tension between the two communities over the marches, for example land, religion, politics, history and social division. During the 16th century, James 1st and England started to take a closer interest in Ireland. They feared Ireland because they thought that they could become a threat to their own power. So he sent over soldiers from England to control Ireland again. He restored control of Ireland between 1649 50 but was ruthless. As a punishment for the rebellion, he ordered his soldiers to slaughter all people, soldiers and civilians, in Drogheda and Wexford. Also, the Catholics involved in the rebellion had there land taken off them and were forced to live in poor lands. Many of these people died of hunger and disease. This was the start of Catholic hatred towards the English rule and towards Protestants. The next big event to happen was the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The marching season commemorates the Protestant victory over Catholics at the Battle of the Boyne, so this event lives long in both Catholics and Protestants memory. That is why this battle is one of the main contributors to why there is still tension over the marches. The Battle of the Boyne symbolises protestant ascendancy . It was the first time that the Protestants stood up for themselves against the Catholics. The Battle of the Boyne was a fight between two people and two religions. • 44. The Impact Of Sports On Sports And Leisure Activities Section A Introduction Despite it being 2015, there are still many ongoing barriers which are preventing many people of all ages, races, genders and social backgrounds from participating in sports and leisure activities. Economically, some sports are just completely unviable to people from certain backgrounds. Sports such as Polo are completely exclusive to a certain class of people, due to the mass expenses required to get you started. Inner city families, some of whom may have a member of the household unemployed would never be able to foot the cost of the bills to play Polo. Along with the unfeasibility of the costs of certain sports, people are also being excluded from sport due to the social side of the spectrum. Many sports are perceived as having gender ties and many children are brought up to identify that a certain sport shouldn t be played by boys as it is a girls sport and vice versa. This leads to a massive social stigma that is developed during the formative years of schooling that influences children s decisions on what sports they decide to play. It can also be tied into many cases of Homophobia in schools, where many homophobic slurs may be attached to a girl who enjoys rugby, or a boy who enjoys gymnastics. Due to the low number of combination between the sexes in many sports as children, this leads to a deficiency of integration as adults, therefore making it more difficult to get involved in a sport as an adult, due to the sport being either male ... I am going to sleep in my own bed in my home; as I sleep, a familiar scent slowly starts to fill the air. I wake up in a cold sweat; I know he is there, in my house. I don t open my eyes because I don t want to know how close he is, but I can tell he is still in the hallway; the scent is not strong enough yet. I listen with all my might, hoping I can hear the carpet moving under his feet or maybe I will hear his breath first. The carpet gives it away, he is entering my room; I can feel him standing over me for what feels like a lifetime. I m so careful not to change the pattern of my breathing for fear he will know I m awake. He turns and walks out. Now I m listening even harder, and my heart sinks when I hear it. My mother s gasping breaths, I know he has her by the throat. What do I do? I m only fourteen, by no means large enough or strong enough to stand up to him, so I stay and pray he won t hit her again. • 49. Machiavelli The Prince Essay In The Prince and Discourses on Livy, Machiavelli breaks from the precedent set by early political thinkers. Machiavelli unleashes a critical attack on the Church both as an institution and also as a belief system. Machiavelli blames the institution of the Church for interfering in politics which ends regimes. He treats the popes as though they are secular leaders who serve as examples of what a ruler should do to maintain power. He calls it corrupt. He then criticizes the religion of Christianity for contributing to these problems and dividing Italy. Machiavelli first targets the Church as an institution in The Prince. Machiavelli has two areas of criticism. The first area indicating Machiavelli s criticism of the papacy revolves around the expansion of the territory under control of the pope. He argues that, Alexander VI, who, more than all the other popes there have been, demonstrated how much a pope, using both money and arms, could get his own way (11, p. 37). Machiavelli depicts Pope Alexander VI almost despotically since Machiavelli sees the pope as being able to get whatever he wants by force or fortune. Machiavelli sees this as a trend in popes to follow such as Julius II who, had opportunities to accumulate money of a sort that had not existed before Alexander (11, p. 37). Machiavelli places a focus on the accumulation of wealth by the popes subtly implying that wealth was important for popes at that time. Machiavelli concludes his criticism of this procession of the popes by commenting that he hopes the new pope, Leo X, will increase that power but also make the Church worth of respect (11, p. 37 38). Machiavelli, like before, makes an implication about the Church, this time that it is currently not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
