 Planning is mainly concerned with selection of apt topics,
formation of objectives and setting guidelines.
 Planning is concerned with arranging the discussion in a
conducive environment at a convenient time.
Teacher can prepare the students for discussion through
a. Providing some basic information related to the topic to be discussed.
b. Clearly stating the objectives and guideline.
c. Clarifying the role of the teacher, students and students leaders
d. The goal and objectives to be achieved should be made quite clear
to the members.
e. The topic and theme for discussion should be linked to the needs,
abilities and interests of the students.
f. The tone for discussion should be properly set by the teacher i.e.
leader of the group.
 Teacher can open the discussion with a keynote address.
 Once the students actively involved in the discussion, teacher has to
assume the role of a leader of facilitator
 Ensuring participation of all students is very important
 To encourage student to student dialogue without going through him.
 To avoid putting questions to the students in between their discussion
and exchange of ideas
 To refrain from community after the views expressed by members of the
group.
 To listen carefully and actively to the exchange of ideas among the
group members
 To show sufficient interest and enthusiasm through verbal or non-verbal
clues for the discussion held in the group.
 To monitor and control the discussion for proceeding on the right track.
 The most vocal ones should be controlled and checked for their over activeness
 Teacher has to make sure that the opinions or viewpoints are exchanged
between the group members instead of exchanging opinions directly to the
teacher or student leader.
 If subgroups are involved in the discussion, group leader have to summarize the
viewpoints of their respective groups to the teacher or student leader.
 Discussion ends with a concluding note delivered by the teacher.
