Assessment is the systematic process of documenting and using
empirical data on the knowledge, skill, attitudes, and beliefs to refine

• In Pakistan, education assessment has been greatly influenced by the
years of British colonization
• There are critical, high-stakes examinations at the matriculate and

the Boards of Examinations.

• Provincial Education Assessment Center (PEACE) started functioning
in 2002.
• Improving the quality of education has become a global agenda at all
educational levels. Although the government of Pakistan also has
taken some bold steps in this regard such as; Teachers' Training
Programs, Development of New Curricula and Improvements in
Assessment System.
8. Assessment System
• Students’ assessments are the primary tool for measuring and
enhancing learning outcomes. Assessments include different methods
of regular and integrated ongoing classroom assessment, collectively
known as formative assessments.
9. Role of BISE
• In provincial education assessment system public examinations for
5th, 8th, 9th to 12th standard are conducted by Boards of Intermediate
and Secondary Education (BISEs).
• Some years ago most of the public examination systems, including all
BISEs across the country, were based on assessing information rather
than students’ critical thinking and analytical abilities. Thus teachers
typically teach for testing, rather than for learning.

• Provincial assessment system main objective is to evaluate the overall
capability and quality of the education system, and to focus on
providing evidence based findings to policy makers for effective

information for quality of education to inform policy makers; to diagnose
learning difficulties and problems of students; to review and revise
instructional strategies. It is not one time activity but an ongoing process
aiming at continuous assessment. The policy documents of Federal and
Provincial Governments stress upon the quality of Education which can only
be determined through appropriate assessment techniques.
