Provincial education assessment systems play an important role in enhancing quality education at school level. They systematically evaluate student learning, monitor education standards, and identify factors influencing achievement. This helps inform policies and direct teacher efforts to improve performance. Provincial systems in Pakistan aim to assess higher-order skills like critical thinking in addition to knowledge. The assessments provide feedback to detect and address issues facing students and teachers.

3. Assessment
Assessment is the systematic process of documenting and using
empirical data on the knowledge, skill, attitudes, and beliefs to refine
programs and improve student learning.

5. National Efforts for Educational Assessment in Pakistan
• In Pakistan, education assessment has been greatly influenced by the
years of British colonization
• There are critical, high-stakes examinations at the matriculate and
intermediate levels that widely impact and determine the career
options of the students.
• Assessments are conducted across the different provinces through
the Boards of Examinations.
(Khattak, 2012).

6. Why Assessment system?
• Informing Policy: the extent to which geography and gender are
linked to inequality in student performance;
• Monitoring Standards: how well the curricula are translated into
knowledge and skills;
• Identifying Correlates of Achievement: the principal determinants of
student performance; and,
• Directing Teachers' Efforts and Raising Students' Achievement:
assisting teachers to use data to improve student performance.

7. Role of provincial education assessment system in
enhancing quality education at school level
• Provincial Education Assessment Center (PEACE) started functioning
in 2002.
• Improving the quality of education has become a global agenda at all
educational levels. Although the government of Pakistan also has
taken some bold steps in this regard such as; Teachers' Training
Programs, Development of New Curricula and Improvements in
Assessment System.

8. Assessment System
• Students’ assessments are the primary tool for measuring and
enhancing learning outcomes. Assessments include different methods
of regular and integrated ongoing classroom assessment, collectively
known as formative assessments.

9. Role of BISE
• In provincial education assessment system public examinations for
5th, 8th, 9th to 12th standard are conducted by Boards of Intermediate
and Secondary Education (BISEs).
• Some years ago most of the public examination systems, including all
BISEs across the country, were based on assessing information rather
than students’ critical thinking and analytical abilities. Thus teachers
typically teach for testing, rather than for learning.

• Provincial assessment system main objective is to evaluate the overall
capability and quality of the education system, and to focus on
providing evidence based findings to policy makers for effective
interventions in education system.

understanding, as well as critical, analytical and creative thinking skills
based on the requirements of different cognitive levels which is
enhancing the quality of education.

motivate the learners.
Assessment plays an important role in the process of learning and
motivation. The types of assessment tasks that we ask our students to do
determine how students will approach the learning task and what study
behaviors they will use.

bringing improvement in the education at school level by effective
monitoring and supervision of their results.

14. Problem solving
• The provincial assessment system help to detect problems being
faced by the students and teachers and their shortcomings related to
their course. The policymakers used proper mechanism for removal
of the shortcomings, detected through the assessment and by this
way it enhance the quality of education.

15. Centralized system
• With the introduction of the centralized assessment system, the
teachers and students are concentrating on their respective jobs to
keep the ratio of failure minimum and show good performance
because the papers will be checked by the teachers of another
district/ teacher.

17. Conclusion
Assessment is a systematic process that plays a significant role in effective
teaching. It begins with identification of objectives and ends with a judgment
concerning the extent to which those objectives have been attained.
Assessment of students’ learning requires the use of a number of techniques
for measuring students’ learning achievements. Assessment provides
information for quality of education to inform policy makers; to diagnose
learning difficulties and problems of students; to review and revise
instructional strategies. It is not one time activity but an ongoing process
aiming at continuous assessment. The policy documents of Federal and
Provincial Governments stress upon the quality of Education which can only
be determined through appropriate assessment techniques.
