Diplopia
By Priyanka ( MBBS Student )
• A visual defect in which a single object is seen in
duplicate ( double vision )
• Its of 2 types – Binocular & Uniocular
Binocular Diplopia
• Formation of image on dissimilar points of the two retinas
• Main causes are
Paralysis or paresis of Extra ocular muscles
Displacement of one eyeball
Mechanical causes- pterygium, symblepheron
Anisometropia
Deviation of ray of light to one eye
Its further types are
• Uncrossed Diplopia
• False image seen on same side of deviation. It occurs in
convergent squint.
• Crossed Diplopia
• False image seen on opposite side of deviation. It occurs
in divergent squint.
Uniocular diplopia
• Object appears double from the affected eye even when the
normal eye is closed
• Causes –
Subluxated clear lens
Subluxated intraocular lens
Double pupil ( congenital anomaly )
Incipient cataract
keratoconus
• Treat the underlying cause
• Temporary relief by occluding the affected eye
• Prism correction if deviation is small, in paralytic squint
