Previewing
 Surveying a text quickly before reading it
carefully to get information about a certain
topic.
 Predict, question, activate past knowledge and
purpose for reading
 The “T.H.I.E.V.E.S”
 Previewing helps the reader
to identify topics and the
concepts they will encounter.
 reading through the major
headings and points
Activate prior
knowledge
Study important
Vocabulary
Set reading goals
Predict
information
When readers preview a text,
they:
What we usually preview?
Scanning
 is reading a text quickly in order to find
specific information.
 For scanning to be successful, you need to
understand how your material is structured as
well as comprehend what you read so you can
locate the specific information you need.
 Scanning also allows you to find
details and other information in
a hurry.
 Learning to use your hands
while scanning is very helpful in
locating specific information.
The material you scan is typically arranged in the
following ways:
 Alphabetically
 Chronologically
 non-alphabetically
 by category
 Textually
Example
o A learner taking a reading test needs to
scan a text on population rates quickly
to find out if a series of statements about
the population figures are true or false.
o locating a word in a dictionary
o finding a meeting time on your calendar
o reading a train or bus schedule
Skimming
 refers to fast reading in which we look only for
the general or main ideas, and works best with
non-fiction (or factual) material.
 Skimming takes place while
reading and allows you to look
for details in addition to the
main ideas.
read only the first sentence of each paragraph
(topic sentences)
 look for important pieces of information, such
as names, dates, or events.
 last few paragraphs may contain a conclusion or
summary, stop skimming there and read in detail
 Skimming will help you locate the information
quickly while making sure you use your
time wisely. It will also increase
the amount of usable
material you obtain for your
research.
Advantages of skimming Technique
It will make students aware of the benefits of the
information available in
reading materials both authentic and inauthentic
because this technique also
prepares the students to be independent reader.
 It will make students aware of reading
strategy is used to find the stated
and unstated information in certain
text as this technique does not only
focus on asking the students to do
reading test but also focus on equipping
the students with the technique used in
different texts.
Disadvantages of skimming technique
It will take time if the teacher does not allocate
the time appropriately.
 It will possibly make the teacher need to prepare
students to face the possibility of the occurrence of
many question types.
If you pick and choose
carefully what you skim and
skip, you will be pleasantly
surprised at the large amount
of information you can get
through in a short period of
time.
- Howard Berg, the world’s fastest reader,
(Guinness Book of World Records)
Intensive Reading
 Reading intensively with a purpose of deeper
learning to something.
 It’s reading where testing, evaluating and
increasing knowledge is the primary focus
 Understanding the literal meaning of what’s
being read is vital.
 In intensive reading, there’s an emphasis on
deconstructing sentences to
understand grammar and
syntax rules as well as to
extricate the details of the
topic.
 It can also involve reading comprehension
testing, such as finding answers to specific
questions.
Some possible examples of intensive reading
material are:
 reports
 contracts
 news articles
 blog posts
 short pieces of text such as short
Stories
 Research / study
The four learning goals for intensive reading are
(Macalister, 2011):
1. Focusing on new language such as vocabulary
and grammar
2. Focusing on ideas such as themes and topics
3. Learning new skills such as making inferences
and identifying main ideas
4. Paying attention to text features
such as genre structure and
cohesion
Extensive Reading
 usually means reading a lot of self-selected
easy, interesting texts, and doing few or no
exercises afterwards.
 Extensive reading is order to gain a general
understanding of what is read.
 It is intended to develop good reading
habits, to build up knowledge of
vocabulary and structure, and
to encourage a liking for
reading.
 A lifelong reading habit
(entertainment)
Purposes of Extensive Reading
 related to pleasure
 information
 general understanding
Reading materials:
 novels
 Magazines
 newspaper
 Comics book
 Poems
 mystery / horror
Benefits on Extensive Reading
 helps develop general world knowledge.
 It can motivate learners to read
 ER helps improve writing.
 It helps to build confidence with extended
texts
