Difference between Various Operating Systems on the basis
of Single User OS, Multi User OS, and Network User:
Single user
Operating
System

Multi user
Operating
System

Networking
Operating System

1.

This operating system is
designed to manage the
computer so that one
user can effectively do
one thing at a time.

An operating system which
includes software to
communicate with other
computers via a network.

2.

It Provides a platform
for only one user at a
time.

A multi-user operating
system allows many
different users to take
advantage of the
computer's resources
simultaneously.
It Provides regulated
access for a number of
users by maintaining a
database of known
users.

Current operating systems
provide a large
number of services to provide
application
programs with a unified view
of the network
This allows resources such as
files, application programs,
and printers to be shared
between computers.

3.

Lets a single user
interact with several
programs,
simultaneously

It lets more than one
user to access the
computer system
resources at one time.

4.

If another user needs to
access the
computer resources,
he/she has to wait
until the current user
departs.
Single user operating
system is used for single
user.
In this sometimes CPU
is not utilized to its
maximum.

There is no need to wait
to access computer
resources.

These type of os distributes
their functions over a number
of networked computers so
that no need to wait to access.

A multi -user operating
system is used for the
multi users.
The OS simulates real
time performance
by task switching.

An operating system that is
designed for network use.

System manages
multiple tasks
simultaneously

System manages
multiple requests to
same resource
concurrently.

In order to work collectively
users had to
move files back and forth

5.

6.

7.

Alone physical connections
were not sufficient to
support networking. To
overcome this network
operating system
establishes and maintains
the connection between the
workstations and the file
server.
Anita Kumari

8.

They are popularly
associated with Desk
Top operating system
which run on standalone
systems where no user
accounts are required.

Multi user operating
system does not
support standalone
systems.

9.

Refers to computer
systems that support
multiple tasks
simultaneously by only
one user.

Refers to computer
systems that support
two or more
simultaneous users.

10. This is the type of
operating system most
people use on their
desktop and laptop
computers today.

11. No need to take care of
any Balance like
multiuser operating
systems because it has
only one user which runs
multiple tasks
simultaneously.

This type of operating
systems widely used in
Mainframe systems.

The operating system
must make sure that the
requirements of the
various users are
balanced, and that each
of the programs they
are using has sufficient
and separate resources
so that a problem with
one user doesn't affect
the entire community of
users.

Many of the original ones
were actually
a type of software package
added to
standalone operating systems
rather
than a true NOS
It adds functions that allow
access to shared resources by
a number of users
concurrently..

A network operating system
is most frequently used
with local area networks and
wide area networks, but
could
also have application to
larger network systems.
To work collectively users
will have to move files back
and forth.
Anita Kumari

12. For example:
Microsoft's Windows ,
DOS and Apple's.

Examples of multiuser operating systems
are: Mainframe
Operating Systems,
UNIX,LINUX,WIND
OWS VISTA etc.

Some examples of network
operating systems
include Novell
NetWare, Microsoft Windo
ws NT, Microsoft Windows
2000, Microsoft Windows
XP, Sun Solaris, Linux,
etc...
