▪ In society, labeling can play an important role in how people interact
with one another every day
▪ Does the internalization of a label play a role, whether it be positive or
negative, in the amount of, or even, type of, deviance an individual
participates in throughout their life
▪ Social deviance consequences can have not only help us to gain a better
understanding in how effective these labels are in determining the level
of deviance people could potentially participate in because of the label,
and how positive labels could counteract high levels of deviance

3. UNDERSTANDING THE ILL EFFECTS OF
DEVIANCE
▪ “Behavior which intentionally violates the norms and ethics and is
harmful for the person who is deviant in nature but also for the people
who are part of their environment.
▪ Deviant Behavior is a matter of serious concern but most of these
factors had neglected in the past, therefore, it gives a direction to
explore in detail the reason and implications of negative behavior on
the rest of human society.
▪ Deviance is is unavoidable.
▪ Be optimistic in declaring that culture as it always changes.
▪ The changes will either disappear or get accepted.

▪ Deviance promotes social unity.
▪ It affirms cultural values and norms.

▪ It encourages social change. It provides jobs for people.
▪ It provides a safety valve for society

▪ Deviance is relative in nature.
▪ It depends upon the cultural norms.
▪ Deviance relies on how people interpret social
behavior.
▪ To some people, a behavior is deviant; to others is not.
▪ Judgement as to whether an act is deviant or not it
depends on various factors like culture, situation, place,
time and the doer of the act

6. DYSFUNCTION OF DEVIANCE
▪ Deviance is a source of harm, injuries, and deaths.
▪ It endangers social norms.
▪ It is expensive (a need to secure the services of
policemen, lawyers, psychologist, etc.)
▪ It creates disorder in the society.
▪ Deviance may lead to another deviant act.

7. CONSEQUENCE OF DEVIANCE
▪ NOT ALL DEVIANTS ARE IMMORAL OR WRONG,
NOT ALL IMMORAL BEHAVIORS ARE DEVIANT.
▪ People deviate from given social norms because of the
rapid social change that are taking place. Thus, the
norms of society become unclear and are no longer
applicable to current conditions.
▪ Emile Durkheim called this situation as “ANOMIE”, or a
breakdown of social norms.

8. POSITIVE DEVIANCE
▪ Positive effect of deviance is as follows
▪ It teaches people what acceptable social behavior is.
▪ It Strengthens group norms and values
▪ It is a sign and a source of social change.

9. NEGATIVE DEVIANCE
▪ Negative Effect of deviance is as follows-
▪ It harms group stability
▪ It induces distrust and ill will
▪ It drains human and economic resources
▪ It weakens people’s faith in and conformity to social
norms.

▪ Deviance is refers to a problem that affects human relations,
threatens the continuation of a civilized society or hinders
significant aspirations of many people.
▪ As a situation affecting a significant number of people that is
believed by them and/or by a significant number of others in the
society to be a source of difficulty or unhappiness.
▪ It is a problem that seriously threatens society or impedes the
important aspiration of many people.
▪ Breakdowns or deviations in social behavior involving in a
considerable number of people.
▪ Problems of moral values.
