The lens develops from surface ectoderm which thickens to form the lens placode and then invaginates to form the lens vesicle within the optic cup. The inner ear develops from the otic placode which forms the otic vesicle. Various structures of the middle and external ear derive from the pharyngeal arches including the malleus, incus and stapes.

Optic nerve
The optic nerve develops from the embryonic optic stalk and connects the optic vesicle to the forebrain. It begins forming in the 8th week of embryogenesis and myelination is completed shortly after birth. The optic nerve has four parts - intraocular, intraorbital, intracanalicular, and intracranial. It transmits visual information from the retina to the brain and is supplied by branches from the ophthalmic artery and central retinal artery.
Development of brain
1. The brain develops from three primary vesicles and their outgrowths that appear during the 4th and 5th weeks of development. Brain flexures form and influence the shape and organization of brain regions.
2. Specific cell groups in the basal and alar plates of the hindbrain, midbrain, and developing brainstem give rise to various nuclei and nerve fibers that contribute to different functional components involved in motor and sensory functions.
3. Histogenesis occurs in the developing cerebellum, with neuronal and glial cells migrating and differentiating into the distinct layers that characterize the adult cerebellar cortex.
Retina and visual tract
The retina contains photoreceptors that detect light and send signals through bipolar and amacrine cells to retinal ganglion cells. Ganglion cell axons form the optic nerve and cross at the optic chiasm, with nasal fibers crossing to the opposite side. The optic tract carries signals to the lateral geniculate nucleus and superior colliculus. The LGN projects to primary visual cortex, which separates visual properties and sends them to different visual association areas for further analysis of color, shape, motion, and location.
Brain Development

The middle ear forms from the first pharyngeal pouch and cleft, and contains the tympanic cavity and three ossicles that develop from cartilage. The internal ear forms from the otic placode and vesicle, which give rise to the membranous labyrinth and its sensory structures for hearing and balance.
