Bioetanol adalah bahan bakar utama yang digunakan sebagai pengganti bensin untuk kendaraan, khususnya di negara-negara maju. Bahan bakar bioetanol terutama dihasilkan oleh proses fermentasi gula, meskipun juga dapat diproduksi dengan proses kimia untuk mereaksikan etilen dengan uap. Sumber utama gula yang dibutuhkan untuk memproduksi etanol—seperti yang sudah disinggung di atas—berasal dari bahan bakar atau tanaman penghasil energi.
