This is case study of a design solution created in 48 hours as part
of Global Service Jam 2018, in Pune, India.
The team wanted to solve a social problem. The problem
statement they chose: "how might we enable underprivileged
teenagers in India, make better education and career choices."
The presentation talks about the methodology, time spent at each
stage of the design process & outcome.
It also includes a few hacks that may be helpful in a "designathon".

Communicate purpose & goal
Before we start, communicate goals of the 48 hour
designathon. Inform participants about the methods and
outcomes of design thinking for problem solving.
What is “design thinking”?
What is end result or end state?
piece of code, paper sketches?
art work, models, flowcharts…??
Who will guide, whom to ask for help when stuck??
Availability of designer with experience in design sprints is a plus.

Design thinking methods
All design methodologies, in principle, focus on people. Understand people, identify problems, pick
one problem & build a solution, take it back to people and check if the solution is solving the
problem. Key is solving one problem at a time.

The basic idea
Test the solution with people.
If it works, make it better; if it doesn’t, then start over again.
Focus expansion Focus convergence Focus expansion Focus convergence
Understand people and
their context
Identify problems.
Focus on one problem
Brainstorm, ideate.
Find solutions for
that one problem
Build one tangible solution.
Sketches, piece of code,
framework, process,
template, anything…

Identifying focus area
Duration: 4 hours (6 pm to ~10 pm)
We put all our “Yes, No, Maybe” moments
(our own moments of confusion) we could
think of, on the board.
Examples: “Cash or Credit Card”, “Cab or
Bus”, “MBA or MS”
Then we grouped them into categories and
put a title on each category.
Example: This is called “Education &
Career”
We wanted to solve a social problem, so
we decided to explore how
underprivileged teenagers make education
& career choices. We tried to understand
the challenges they face in this process.

Preparations before meeting people
Duration: --
Try to find communities & people to talk to, immediately after identifying a focus area.
Call or meet them, tell them about the project, ask them for their time.
Try to get their time as early as possible.
The designer in the team can share the dos and don’ts of observation and interview –
like not asking leading questions, letting the people talk, being polite & encouraging etc.
Tip: Build a master-apprentice relationship, where the people are the master and the
designers are the apprentice.
Define roles – observer, interviewer, note taker, photographer.
Be ethical, ask for permission, if people don’t permit, don’t do it.

Understand people
Duration: 3 hours (10 am to ~1 pm)
Get out of the building.
Observe, interview, take notes, take pictures,
videos.
Gather as much information as possible. Be curious - ask why, how and what.
Be polite. Like an apprentice, ask them how to do things, people will tell you everything.

Design in 48 hours
48 hours is a very short time, especially if problem statement or
theme hasn’t be revealed before. Some helpful tips
- Try finding people nearby
- This is not “true” research, the idea is to collect reasonable
good data
- Fix appointments, it helps plug time leaks
- Ensure fixing follow-up meeting via phone. It helps if there
is any confusion later
- Ask them if they would like to join when ideating
Understand people… continued
Duration: 3 hours (10 am to ~1 pm)
Collect data. Stay focused.
Lots of notes
Then they looked up YouTube and showed us - “This the
how laser lights work.“
We: What do you do with your phone?
People: They showed us the apps, told us why they have it. “I
got the phone after Jio services were launched”
People:
“Only this guy has a smartphone. His father purchased it for him as he had taken
up a taxi driver’s job.”
“We use his phone to chat, music, see videos (chuckles).”
We: What do you want do next?
People: “If I study further, I cannot take a holiday. Plus I am not good at
it either. I want work. There is no shame in taking up any work”
“I want to get into the business of renting out laser lights. But I need money and
permission from my parents”
We: how would get the money?
People: Goes to his shanty, brings a newspaper and shows the classifieds columns.
“There are many people giving loans, look here are their ads.”

Ideate. Brainstorm.
Duration: -- hours (6.30 pm to end of day)
Use brainstorming techniques to ideate.
- Ideate individually then as a group
- Don’t be judgmental
- Build on top of others ideas
- Invite other participants
- Try the “How might we…?” technique
Do not use “But then…” when talking about ideas. Use “Yes and …”
Try to include people in the ideation process.

  • 1. 23-05-2018 1 Case Study: Design in 48 hours 48 hours to uncover and solve a “Yes, No, Maybe” problem at GSJam, 2018. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Namah Pandey Senior UX Architect, Fiserv May 19th, 2018 Pune, India
  • 2. 23-05-2018 2 This is case study of a design solution created in 48 hours as part of Global Service Jam 2018, in Pune, India. The team wanted to solve a social problem. The problem statement they chose: "how might we enable underprivileged teenagers in India, make better education and career choices." The presentation talks about the methodology, time spent at each stage of the design process & outcome. It also includes a few hacks that may be helpful in a "designathon". About the deck Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours 9th March, 2018 5:30 pm 11th March, 2018 3:00 pm @ThoughtWorks, Pune, India Global Service Jam YES. NO. MAYBE. Theme for 2018 Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours
  • 3. 23-05-2018 3 Communicate purpose & goal Before we start, communicate goals of the 48 hour designathon. Inform participants about the methods and outcomes of design thinking for problem solving. What is “design thinking”? What is end result or end state? piece of code, paper sketches? art work, models, flowcharts…?? Who will guide, whom to ask for help when stuck?? Availability of designer with experience in design sprints is a plus. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Design thinking methods All design methodologies, in principle, focus on people. Understand people, identify problems, pick one problem & build a solution, take it back to people and check if the solution is solving the problem. Key is solving one problem at a time. • 4. 23-05-2018 4 The basic idea Test the solution with people. If it works, make it better; if it doesn’t, then start over again. Focus expansion Focus convergence Focus expansion Focus convergence Understand people and their context Identify problems. Focus on one problem Brainstorm, ideate. Find solutions for that one problem Build one tangible solution. Sketches, piece of code, framework, process, template, anything… Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours The team Amol, code Namah, design Akhilesh, business analysis Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours
  • 5. 23-05-2018 5 Identifying focus area Duration: 4 hours (6 pm to ~10 pm) We put all our “Yes, No, Maybe” moments (our own moments of confusion) we could think of, on the board. Examples: “Cash or Credit Card”, “Cab or Bus”, “MBA or MS” Then we grouped them into categories and put a title on each category. Example: This is called “Education & Career” We wanted to solve a social problem, so we decided to explore how underprivileged teenagers make education & career choices. We tried to understand the challenges they face in this process. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Preparations before meeting people Duration: -- Try to find communities & people to talk to, immediately after identifying a focus area. Call or meet them, tell them about the project, ask them for their time. Try to get their time as early as possible. The designer in the team can share the dos and don’ts of observation and interview – like not asking leading questions, letting the people talk, being polite & encouraging etc. Tip: Build a master-apprentice relationship, where the people are the master and the designers are the apprentice. Define roles – observer, interviewer, note taker, photographer. Be ethical, ask for permission, if people don’t permit, don’t do it. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours
  • 6. 23-05-2018 6 Understand people Duration: 3 hours (10 am to ~1 pm) Get out of the building. Observe, interview, take notes, take pictures, videos. Gather as much information as possible. Be curious - ask why, how and what. Be polite. Like an apprentice, ask them how to do things, people will tell you everything. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours 48 hours is a very short time, especially if problem statement or theme hasn’t be revealed before. Some helpful tips - Try finding people nearby - This is not “true” research, the idea is to collect reasonable good data - Fix appointments, it helps plug time leaks - Ensure fixing follow-up meeting via phone. It helps if there is any confusion later - Ask them if they would like to join when ideating Understand people… continued Duration: 3 hours (10 am to ~1 pm) Collect data. Stay focused. Lots of notes Then they looked up YouTube and showed us - “This the how laser lights work.“ We: What do you do with your phone? People: They showed us the apps, told us why they have it. “I got the phone after Jio services were launched” People: “Only this guy has a smartphone. His father purchased it for him as he had taken up a taxi driver’s job.” “We use his phone to chat, music, see videos (chuckles).” We: What do you want do next? People: “If I study further, I cannot take a holiday. Plus I am not good at it either. I want work. There is no shame in taking up any work” “I want to get into the business of renting out laser lights. But I need money and permission from my parents” We: how would get the money? People: Goes to his shanty, brings a newspaper and shows the classifieds columns. “There are many people giving loans, look here are their ads.” Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours

Start putting together empathy map The empathy map helps understand people. It helps understand their needs. Invite someone who wasn’t part of the interview to join the discussion. Encourage them to ask questions about the observations & artifacts. It helps reduce biases & understand people better. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Our Empathy Map: YouTube (2:24) Reflect. Identify problems. Duration: -- Identify as many problems as possible. Select one problem to solve. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours “I don’t know English” “Funds are a problem” “Getting a loan for business is difficult” “Ads on TV and in newspapers are useless” “I can only study in the night, but I don’t know where.” “Education syllabus doesn’t focus on employment needs” “No guidance available as parents are illiterate. Relatives mock.”
  • 8. 23-05-2018 8 Ideate. Brainstorm. Duration: -- hours (6.30 pm to end of day) Use brainstorming techniques to ideate. - Ideate individually then as a group - Don’t be judgmental - Build on top of others ideas - Invite other participants - Try the “How might we…?” technique Do not use “But then…” when talking about ideas. Use “Yes and …” Try to include people in the ideation process. Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Source: Medium Ideas. Lots of them. Duration: -- Build on top of others ideas. Gather as many ideas as possible. Avoid “But then…” Namah Pandey Design in 48 hours Mobile apps Mentorship at work Weekend education Paid apprenticeship program Videos via WhatsApp Partnership with NGOs Meet the experts, learn from them Video conferencing Skill enhancement
