OpenStack is an open source implementation of cloud computing, potentially at very large scale. However, it has many moving parts and is complex to operate. SaltStack appears to provide scalable and secure orchestration for OpenStack. But like all powerful solutions to complex problems, a great deal of the useful know-how has to be discovered by actual practice and hard-won experience. This session will share the inside knowledge gained through practical experience. This is not a howto install OpenStack.

Deployment is often omitted from configuration management and orchestration, which typically focuses on the infrastructure and not the core application that the infrastructure supports. This presentation will give an overview of a deployment system I wrote using SaltStack to provide immediately consistent deployment for software. The deployment system has the ability for manual deploys or for continuous deployments using a Heroku-like workflow. It has support for multiple deployment schemes, with a default of Git deployment. The deployment system uses a combination of Salt peer runner calls, runners, modules, returners, pillars and grains as well as a deployment host running Apache, Sartoris (a git-deploy frontend), and Redis (for reporting).

MariaDB has now reached the 10th major release since the original authors of MySQL started taking the code base in another direction than where MySQL is going under Oracle’s ownership. Today MariaDB has many more features than Oracle MySQL and it is the default MySQL variant in Debian. This presentation covers what new features landed in MariaDB 10.5 and also touches on how the long existing features have evolved to today, and naturally what is their state and best practices for Debian users. MariaDB has also built-in support for Galera master-master replication and Galera 4 has recently landed in Debian, so it will also be covered.

Docker is becoming more mainstream and adopted by users as a method to package and deploy self-sufficient applications in primarily stateless Linux containers. It's a great toolset on top of OS-level virtualization (LXC, a.k.a containers) and plays well in the world of micro services. However, Docker containers are transient by default. If a container is destroyed, all data created is also lost. For a stateful service like a database, this is a major headache to say the least. There are a number ways to provide persistent storage in Docker containers. In this presentation, we will talk about how to setup a persistence data service with Docker that can be torn down and brought up across hosts and containers. We will touch upon orchestration tools, shared volumes, data-only-containers, security and configuration management, multi-host networking, service discovery and implications on monitoring when we move from host-centric to role-centric services with shorter life cycles.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data Analysis

JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Attendees will learn the practical aspects of setting up and remotely triggering LLMs from local machines, focusing on ease of use and efficiency. This talk is ideal for researchers and practitioners looking to leverage the power of LLMs in their work, offering a clear guide to harnessing supercomputing resources for quick and effective LLM inference.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints

In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
