Day 2
A: Analyze the Learners
This is a class of twenty high school seniors. Twelve of them are Caucasian, and eight of them
are African American. None of them have learning or physical disabilities. Three of them have
ADHD.
S: State Objectives
Today’s objectives are to learn more about Shakespeare’s sonnets, a major part of his legacy. A
lot of college English classes will read some of Shakespeare’s sonnets at some point, so I think it
is important that students are at least a little familiar with them. There are a few things we plan
on doing. First, students will listen to the podcast I created about Shakespeare’s sonnets. After
that, the students will individually read five or six sonnets. They will each to pick one to work
on, and then split into groups based on their choices. They will closely read through their chosen
sonnet, and do a paraphrase of it in modern English to help them understand a little better. After
that, each group will talk to the class about their sonnet and anything that stood out in particular
to them. Students will then each create a Voki that speaks their favorite line from their sonnet,
commenting it on the class Facebook page. After doing all of this, they will have 80% accuracy
regarding sonnets and close reading, which is a very difficult concept.
S: Select the 3 M’s (Method, Media, Materials)
The methods in this activity will be discussion, technology, and writing. The media used will be
the podcast, Voki, and Facebook. Materials for this will be computers with internet access and
paper and pencil, as well as copies of the sonnets we are going to read.
U: Utilize Media and Materials
The students will be receiving the benefit of the media and materials. I would prepare the
podcast and sonnets, then teach it. The students listen, participate, and learn.
R: Require Learner Participation
The students will participate on their own and within groups during this lesson.
E: Evaluate and Revise
Students will be evaluated on the work they did within their groups (their paraphrases) and
receive credit for completing the Voki assignment.

Students will then each create a Voki that speaks their favorite line from their sonnet, commenting it on the class Facebook page. After doing all of this, they will have 80% accuracy regarding sonnets and close reading, which is a very difficult concept. S: Select the 3 M’s (Method, Media, Materials)
  • 2. The methods in this activity will be discussion, technology, and writing. The media used will be the podcast, Voki, and Facebook. Materials for this will be computers with internet access and paper and pencil, as well as copies of the sonnets we are going to read. U: Utilize Media and Materials The students will be receiving the benefit of the media and materials. I would prepare the podcast and sonnets, then teach it. The students listen, participate, and learn. R: Require Learner Participation The students will participate on their own and within groups during this lesson. E: Evaluate and Revise Students will be evaluated on the work they did within their groups (their paraphrases) and receive credit for completing the Voki assignment.
