Poetry Unit Plan

Students Being Taught
• 10th grade students in a regular Ed. English class
• 18 students total, 50% white, 25% African American, and 25%
Asian Americans, and 4 students were in resource English in
9th grade.
Main Objective
• Students will understand/summarize the meaning of a poem,
rhyme scheme, different poets, and imagery by reading
poems, writing poems, drawing pictures, and discussing
different poets, by working in groups, through social media
devices, and “acting out” a poem, with 100% accuracy, by the
end of a five day week.
Breakdown
• Monday: Types of Poetry, students will look at different types of poems by
watching a video of me talking about them and write a certain type of
poem.
• Tuesday: Look at different poets. Watch my movie maker video about some
different poets. We will read some of the poets poems and have a class
discussion on who/what was there favorite. Students will be rewarded
points when they participate in discussion.
• Wednesday: Students will look at different poems with strong imagery and
make a picture using Photoshop that students think the poet is trying to get
across.
• Thursday: Students will find poems using a WebQuest. They will pick out
different literary devices. Next, they will then read choose poem and
summarize it in the form of a tweet, text message, and Facebook post.
• Friday: Students will get in groups and pick a poem that we have discussed
earlier in the week and act it out. To ensure the rest of the class is paying
attention, they will take on the role of a critic and give constructive criticism
on the other groups performance. They will upload their criticisms to a class
blog and discuss the mock performances.
