Day 1
A: Analyze the Learners
This is a class of twenty high school seniors. Twelve of them are Caucasian, and eight of them
are African American. None of them have learning or physical disabilities. Three of them have
ADHD.
S: State Objectives
The objectives for today are to get a better grasp on Shakespeare as well as learn about his life
and his background. For all that we read Shakespeare, a lot of his personal life is unknown to
students. I will begin by showing them the picture I created of Shakespeare on Photoshop of him
in the modern day, spurring on a discussion about whether or not Shakespeare still translates well
in today’s culture. I will take a vote on who believes that Shakespeare is still a valuable asset to
the English community, and who thinks we should do away with his work. The idea for the day
is for the kids to learn and make their own opinions regarding Shakespeare. After that, I will
have them complete the “Is Shakespeare relevant?” Webquest I created, along with my QR being
embedded into that. The QR links to a short YouTube video that is a biography of William
Shakespeare. For the Webquest, the directions are as follows: You are an English teacher. You
have the choice to include Shakespeare in you curriculum or leave his works out completely.
You need to do some research before you make that decision. By learning about his works and
some modern day options, you can decide whether or not Shakespeare is a relevant and
2. worthwhile author to study. You will also decide whether you will include him in your lesson
plans. You will visit sites and watch videos to educate yourself about Shakespeare works- the
undercurrents, themes, and plotlines. There are questions for you to answer regarding these
things. Then, you will make your decision about whether or not you believe his work is
something worth teaching/learning. You will defend your decision in a short argumentative
paper (1 page).” After completing all of this, I want students to have completed the assignment
directions with 100% accuracy- their opinion is not what they are graded on, but that they
understood and completed the work and argumentative paper.
S: Select the 3 M’s (Method, Media, Materials)
The methods in this activity will be discussion, technology, and writing. The media used will be
The Webquest and QR. Materials for this will be computers with internet access and simple
paper and pencils.
U: Utilize Media and Materials
The students will be receiving the benefit of the media and materials. It isn’t anything too
involved, besides the Webquest, so it should be easy to teach while keeping discussion open. I
would prepare the materials and ideas, then teach it. The students listen, participate, and learn.
R: Require Learner Participation
Students will participate in every aspect of this lesson. Asking their opinion for a poll requires
their participation, as well as the Webquest and paper.
E: Evaluate and Revise
3. Evaluation will be based on participation and the papers they write after the Webquest. After the
Webquest, I will ask the students to take the poll again that they had at the beginning of class and
see if anyone’s answers have changed.
