Wilfred Owen Techniques
Wilfred Owens war poetry
Good morning/afternoon teacher and peers,
Wilfred Owen was born in 1893 in Oswestry (United Kingdom). He wanted to be a poet from the age
of nineteen although most of his famous work is that which he wrote in his years spent in the war
where he died in 1918.
The preface to Owens poetry read:
This book is not about heroes. English poetry is not yet fit to speak of them.
Nor is it about deeds, or lands, nor anything about glory, honour, might, majesty, dominion, or power,
except war.
Above all I am not concerned with Poetry.
My subject is war, and the pity of war.
The poetry is in the pity.
To help tell you how Owen uses poetic techniques to achieve the objective stated above i will provide

Figurative language, as with most poetry, is readily used in much of Owens work because it helps to
create tone and communicate emotion effectively. Let s take a look at the poem mental cases for a few
examples of figurative language. Metaphor, misery swelters surely we have perished.
Simile, bearing teeth that leer like skulls teeth wicked? And also the poem disabled where we see an
example of personification in the line that speaks of how the town used to swing so gay.
Symbolism when it tells of the disabled man wearing his ghastly suit of gray, the gray symbolises the
dullness and shadows that now hang over him.
We often see the use of oxymoron s and paradox when something is being contrasted within a poem
such as a line from the poem dulce et decorum est, gas! GAS! Quick boys! An ecstasy of fumbling
which is used to describe the controlled panic which quickly increases as the men fumble to put on
thier gas masks. A good example of a paradox also from this poem is the line that Owen writes the
devil, sick of sick this is a paradox because the devil is a personification of sin, this is just another way
he portrays how horrific war is.
Rhetorical features are used by Wilfred Owen as it heightens the effect of the language, to create a
more persuasive effect.
Repetition is often used weather this be to make the poem sound monotonous when read such

The Importance Of Substance Abuse Treatment Centers
If you are searching for a substance abuse treatment center, it is very important that you find one that
will meet your needs. You should review the facilities or services they have to offer, for example, the
treatment programs, professionals, ratings, location, and what they charge for these services. So after
doing my research on some treatment centers in my area, I chose Outreach located in Ridgewood
Queens. I chose this center because it is close to home and they offer a wide range of services, such as,
long term residential substance abuse treatment to adolescents. I thought I would be interesting to visit
and I see what these young ones are going through and how the treatment center is helping them. I
was a little unsettled before visiting

The Goal By Eli Goldratt
The novel The Goal by Eli Goldratt is an inspiring story of a manufacturing plant that seems to need
some help staying afloat. The story explains the Theory of Constraints and concentrates on bottlenecks
and constraints. The plant manager, and also the main character in the story, is Alex Rogo. In the book,
Alex is depicted as a husband, a father and long time project engineer and plant manager at UniCo
struggling with both his marriage and his manufacturing plant. The main plot of the story starts off
with Bill Peach (Division Vice President) telling Alex that the plant is not profitable. Peach then gives
Alex a three month deadline to improve the plant s performance dramatically and increase profits or
the production plant will shut down. Peach fails to mention that the entire division is under water and
may soon be shut down by corporate. During this challenging time, Alex is also dealing with an
impatient wife at home who is sick and tired of her husband spending so much time at work. She
eventually moves out and Alex is stuck trying to figure out how he can salvage both his marriage and
production plant. When Alex runs into an old Physics Professor, Jonah, he begins to express all of his
challenges at work and is surprised to hear that Jonah is fully aware that the plant is missing deadlines
and experiencing high inventory and expenses. Jonah helps to guide Alex through this challenging
period. Before Alex can tackle the problems, he must first identify the goal.

Natural And Natural Sublime
Many different natural and manmade things can be interpreted as aesthetically sublime. Things that
are sublime are all around, and they attract a lot of attention from the public. Most tourist attractions
are considered sublime. The sublime portrays the strong emotions of awe that people have when they
see powerful forces of the natural world. Along with tourist attractions being sublime, most art pieces,
especially paintings, are sublime. While some artists paint natural, sublime scenes like mountains,
volcanoes, and waterfalls, the artists Erich Mercker, Hans Müller, and Fritz Gärtner demonstrate the
sublime by painting industrial scenes that are immense in size and contain bright orange molten metal
which creates feelings of power and fear. The sublime describes the awe and shock that people
experience when they see something that is enormous in size. David Rodgers summarizes the works
of a man named Longinus, who is credited as the first person to define the sublime. Longinus defines
it as differing from beauty and evoking more intense emotions by vastness, a quality that inspires awe.
Whereas beauty may be found in the small, the smooth, the light and the everyday, the sublime is vast,
irregular, obscure and superhuman (Rodgers, 1996, pg. 889). He explains that the sublime is more
than just beauty because the sublime captures the massive size of these objects that creates
wonderment. Along with Longinus writing about the vast and sheer awe that the sublime creates,
Immanuel Kant also explains his definition of the sublime. Kant explains that the physical properties,
whether actually or imaginative perceived, that were generally accorded to the sublime by 18th
century writers, were vastness, obscurity and irregularity, all of which could evoke a degree of terror
(Rodgers, 1996 pg. 890). He also agreed that the impressive size of things helped make them sublime.
Overall, the sublime explains the wonderment and awe that someone feels when looking at something
that is huge and impressive. A painting that portrays the sublime is Mercker s Copper Mill at Duisburg
on Rhine River (Türk, 2003, p. 266). The painting shows a large factory that is right on a river, and the
machines present in the painting

Cultural Heritage Protection During Armed Conflict
Introduction The destruction of cultural heritage during armed conflict has become the forefront issue
within the international discourse on its legal protection in the last several decades. Many scholars and
professionals have contributed to the development of international legal instruments concerning
cultural heritage protection. This thesis analyzes the existing international legal instruments to
demonstrate their practical application, or lack there of, in recent armed conflict situations vis à vis the
changing paradigm in the execution of war. The complexity of the issue of law and cultural heritage
protection during armed conflict is that it involves a variety of disciplines: anthropology, archeology,
architecture, conservation, law, international affairs, politics and philosophy among others. Therefore
when addressing the issue, all disciplines, as well as the many stakeholders involved, must be
considered and challenged. Nevertheless, this thesis focuses on a legal analysis of cultural heritage
protection during armed conflict to establish the importance that cultural heritage has on humanity at
large and to emphasize the role of the international community in its safeguarding. The conceptual
basis of this thesis is cultural heritage, therefore a critical analysis of the ideology associated with the
terms, culture and heritage, is fundamental to understanding their development throughout time and
within international legal instruments. The first chapter of this

Puritan Origins Of The American Wilderness Movement Summary
Many people that go out and enjoy the wilderness or the outdoors head to those places because they
need to get away from the world and relax. The opportunity you have to go out and enjoy these
beautiful areas all started with the beginning of this country by many men and their ideas and views of
the outdoors. I will conduct a rhetorical analysis of J. Baird Callicott and Priscilla Solis Ybarra s
article, The Puritan Origins of the American Wilderness Movement, and critique there use of rhetorical
appeals in order to show that their article was written successfully. J. Baird Callicott and Priscilla Solis
Ybarra are both professors at the University of North Texas and the situation they are explaining is
that the wilderness was once seen as a wild place filled with beasts that couldn t be tamed. They
include the view points and work of great foresters like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

attitudes and values of his New England contemporaries (Calliscott, Ybarra). The people that did not
care what people thought about their ideas were the ones that made this country a beautiful place. The
character that Calliscott and Ybarra come off as to me is people who care about the history of this
country and its wilderness. They include positive examples to help get there point across like, It was
their God ordained destiny to transform the dismal American wilderness into an earthly paradise,
governed according to the Word of God (Calliscott, Ybarra). The American wilderness was compared
to a paradise and should be governed to the Word of God has a positive and biblical meaning because
many people practice their religion as they please and comparing the wilderness to the Word of God is

If I could spend 14 Tuesdays with anyone, it would be Nina Simone. Not only was Ms. Simone a
remarkable singer, but she was a classical pianist as well. Her songs flow with a rhythm only the best

Goddam, became an important song for the Civil Rights Movement. Nina Simone released over 40
original albums in her lifetime, each receiving critical acclaim. I love her style, poise, and ability to hit
the really low notes. I would hope she could teach me her technique and possibly some piano. Nina
was an accomplished classical pianist, being able to play almost anything by ear, but her application

Cricothyroid Stereotypes
Regardless of gender, humans tend to start their lives with similar capacities and productions. All
genders are born with a larynx, our primary organ for vibration, which biologically functions to keep
air flowing through the respiratory system and keep foreign objects out. Additionally, children s vocal
folds have an average fundamental frequency, or vocal fold vibration, of 250 Hz per second. However,
the larynx also has the nonbiological function of acting as a vibratory source for speech. This is a
complex system and so produces a lot of variety in speech, particularly between men and women.
Therefore, vocal production becomes indicative of how a person is perceived, partially based on
societal assumptions. For cisgender individuals this results in an accurate representation, but
transgender individuals are often betrayed by their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cricothyroid approximation involves moving the cricoid cartilage backward and upward and thyroid
cartilage forward and downward.
The cricothyroid allows the thyroid to rock while the cricoid is stationary, causing the folds to stretch;
performing surgery on it brings the cartilages closer together, increasing tension, and thereby allows
one to achieve a more desired pitch. This surgery is done through a neck incision, which makes the
Adam s apple look smaller, possibly giving the individual a more preferred look in addition to the
pitch change.
For Commissure advancement, a center strip of the anterior commissure is cut from the thyroid
cartilage. The vocal cords are then detached in the subperichondrial plane, and the cartilage strip is
advanced and secured using a metal splint (American, 2003). A successful surgery tightens and
increases tension in the vocal folds. Commissure advancement and endolaryngeal shortening can
increase one s fundamental frequency by 40 to 50 Hz (American,

Themes in Blue Velvet
Exploring the Dark Side: Contrasting Themes in Blue Velvet
The subconscious psyche is one of the most fascinating and almost completely inexplicable aspects of
human behavior. Even more intriguing than merely the subconscious is the notion of a darker, more
repressed side that many individuals refuse to acknowledge exists within them. In David Lynch s film
Blue Velvet, the director attempts to explore the psyche of a young man named Jeffrey Beaumont,
most notably the clash between his darker side and good side for the first time in his life. Using
themes that sharply contrast one another, Lynch provides insight into the character of Jeffrey and the
struggle that he is faced with. Jeffrey is in a transitional period of his life, ... Show more content on

Lynch chooses to use such stark contrast in an effort to establish not only the differences in one s
perception, but of the psyche as well. The opening sequence is used by Lynch as a metaphor for
Jeffrey s state of mind throughout the entire film, as Jeffrey realizes he has a dark side yet is trying
(most of the time) to suppress it. The town of Lumberton, like Jeffrey, is an idealized version of what
America and Americans should be like and yet, much like Jeffrey s mind, it is full of dark secrets and
contradictions. One aspect of Jeffrey s psyche being explored is the notion of his battle between
innocent love for a young girl and the animalistic lust he possesses for an older, more mature woman.
The good or innocent side of Jeffrey is personified in the character of Sandy. Sandy is often depicted
wearing light colors, with blue eyes and perfectly brushed blonde hair. When Sandy is first introduced
into the film, she enters through utter darkness, stepping out of the shadows and into the light in a
medium shot. Lynch follows this up with a long reverse tracking two shot in which Jeffrey and Sandy
make small talk and innocently flirt with one another. Dorothy s introduction into the film, however, is
quite different. The film first truly introduces the audience and Jeffrey to Dorothy with a subjective
shot from her closet. After breaking into Dorothy s apartment and

Importance Of Consumerism
Introduction
Importance of Consumerism or Consumer Movement The ancestries of consumerism can be traced
back virtually as far as the beginning of commerce and trade. In business activities, the consumer s
concept is significant, and every attempt is made to promote consumer satisfaction (Rajagopalan,
2011). In reality, consumer may be exploited and cheated by unethical businessman as they are un
organized that lacking of knowledge to safeguard their right (Rajagopalan, 2011). According to Philip
Kotler and G. Amstrong, consumerism is defined that consists of the organized effects of citizens and
private, not for profit organizational to impose the rights and power, and also collective welfare of
buyers in relation to seller (Rajagopalan, 2011). Consumerism also means that consumers are trying to
unite together to protect their own interests. So that consumer organizational could provide and
organize efforts to fight against unfair marketing practice and to achieve consumer protection when
purchasing goods and services (Chand, 2015). This is a democratic action for self protecting and also
a collective effort done by consumers to safeguard their own rights to against their exploitation in this
complex economic environment. These organized activities are also called consumer movement.

Downtown Atlanta Georgia
Downtown Atlanta is a beautiful city that attracts visitors from in and out of the state. Atlanta
Downtown is a place where many businesses and jobs are located. This is the most frequent place
people visit in Atlanta. The biggest problem with downtown is not the lack of parking spaces but there
are too many people driving there at once.
Most parking available in downtown cost money and time. Even the parking spaces available are very
limited and not everyone could afford it. The parking decks in downtown belong to some companies.
Most of those companies even make their own employee pay for it. As for the city, they have some
free parking spaces which are limited to the public. Many of those parking spaces in Downtown
Atlanta are usually not free. Atlanta is not the only state in America who does not provide free parking
for their customers, workers, or tourists alike. For instance New York downtown charges for their
parking. They are many parking meters on the sides of the roads where you can park your car for a
limited period of time. Atlanta Downtown has meters on every available space on the streets and at
every corner possible. The meters are step up only on a time limit. People say that the meters need to
be fed before it works. And that is true, if anyone fails to pay the meter than your vehicle can be
towed. That is more money out of your pocket. The street in downtown are usually small because

through Algernon. However when Charlie falls intellectually we see the strength of friendship at the
end of the novel and Charlie s last words are put some flowers on Algernon s grave in the bak yard

Intellectual growth is the development of one s ability to process information and form your own
conclusions. We see Charlie s intellectual growth throughout the book. He eventually surpasses
everyone around him and starts viewing them with a more critical eye. On April first Charlie surprises
his workmates by demonstrating that he can operate the dough mixer and the on April twenty first he
redesigns the whole dough mixing process. Charlie makes tremendous psychological leap with his

How Has War Changed Over Time
In war there is death, but where in death does it change to become what is known today as modern
warfare? Was it a landmark like the first use of a tool or tactic, or is it during a time as a society? The
impactfulness of guns changed the ways wars were fought still even today, but the tanks and airplanes
changed it on even a larger aspect. The other side of the coin is that the perspective of war has
changed through the ages. It changed from an all out barbaric massacre of people, to a gentlemanly
and honorable act, to a cold and cruel mechanized meat grinder. Where did death change to become
modern? In the early 17th century, the revolutionary flintlock was invented in France, changing the
way wars were fought forever. Instead of having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 19th century, war was mostly fought in a gentlemanly way. Swords were exchanged when
surrendering, white gloves were worn, and soldiers did When conversations about civil war come up,
it generally is generally known as what is know as volley fire. Volley fire against massed troops
delivered effective projectiles out to 200 yards, but at 300 yards balls from muzzle loaders lost most of
their lethality. Also, while well trained soldiers could load and shoot their muskets five times per
minute, volley fire led to a collective rate of only two to three shots per minute. This tactic was mostly
used up until World War I, where trench warfare became the dominant and obvious tactic due to the
introduction to large artillery. Trench warfare is the obvious solution because when on the battlefield,
death rains to everywhere that can be seen at eye level, the only obvious idea is to dig down because
machine guns can not shoot through the ground. Trench warfare was a puzzle to break and with each
week it was not solved, millions lost their lives. When tanks entered the battlefield in 1916, the barbed
wire was able to be broken and the fire from the enemy was useless. This is where the next tactic came
to age, the blitzkreig. The blitzkrieg, translated to lightning warfare, was most notably used by the
Nazi German army by combining fast moving tanks and dive bombing aircraft to take the area and
infantry to hold the area. Within a little over a year of the first attack of Czechoslovakia, the Nazis
were able to conquer all of europe using this tactic. The problem with this is that it is not very
defensive. Once both the Soviets and the Allied forces broke through the main line, it took 9 months to
capture Berlin. Some credit this victory for the Allies for the mass amount of propaganda first
developed in World War I and perfected in World War 2.

How Does Liesel Use Irony In The Book Thief
When one thinks of a thief, they think of sneaky men in black masks trying to steal a precious jewel.
However, in The Book Thief the thief is in fact not a man in a black mask but a girl. The definition of
a thief is someone who steals items of important value resulting in negative consequences for the
victim. Instead, in the novel, when the main character, Liesel, steals books, they have a positive effect
on the people that she stole it from and even the people she comes in contact with. This is why it is

Discuss how theories of human growth and development can help understand human behaviour.
Human growth and development is studied and researched with differing perspectives. There are many
ways human growth and development can be looked at. Certain disciplines, such as, biology,
psychology and sociology all have opposing viewpoints on the subject. The psychological viewpoint
concentrates on the different processes of the mind, whereas, the biological approach is centred on
genetics and environmental factors. The sociological viewpoint, however, focuses on individual
thoughts and feelings as being socially constructed (Beckett and Taylor, 2010). Human growth and

For example, according to Hart, Blincow and Thomas, resilient therapy may help a child in gaining
good relationships with family and friends by tapping into good influences and finding place for that
child to belong. Resilient therapy recognises the importance of attachment theory and aims for the
affected child to feel a sense of family cohesion. According to Hart, Blincow and Thomas,in providing
a resilient mechanism, two things are achieved. Firstly, a sense of belonging, as this is protective and
gives children a secure base to attend; psychologically, when feeling under threat. Secondly, with
children experiencing a self of belonging somewhere, they are better equipped in facing rejection
elsewhere.
Further to the attachment theory, Bowlby derived the term maternal deprivation, (Bowlby, 1959).
Bowlby identified the first two years of a child s life as the most critical time for bonding. Bowlby
hypothesised that if there was a lack of parent and caregiver bonding by the age of 2 then maternal
deprivations may result in the child suffering psychological damages that may be irreversible.
According to Bowlby, children who suffered maternal deprivation at a young age may often become
incapable of expressing empathetic emotions and affection later into their adult life.
In addition to Bowlbys ideas;

Catherine had an aggressive yet realistic handle on foreign affairs. Her impressive army helped her to
defeat other nations and conquer land for Russia, increasing their size. She annexed land through the
partition of Poland and along the Baltic coast. She also allied with Austria and went to war with the
Ottomans in 1787, ending in victory for Russia (Catherine II). One of Catherine s main goals was to
secure Russia a warm water port and through this victory she got it on the coast of the Black Sea. This
was important because it was Russia s first warm water port, increasing their ability to trade by
providing an outlet to the Mediterranean, giving them access to the rest of Europe. This new area
along the Black Sea also provided them with fertile, farmable land which helped to feed Russia s
growing population. In 1795, Russia acquired Lithuania, the Ukraine, and Courland from Poland by
sending troops into Poland, forcing them to sign the Treaty of Kuchuk Kainarji which arranged the
second partition of Poland, annexing a total of one hundred ninety thousand square miles of land for
Russia. Catherine also annexed Crimea and Belarus (Marker). This expanded Russia s power and
influence on other countries and also how showed how Catherine helped imperialism within Russia.
Another one of Catherine s accomplishments was her domestic affairs and her focus on internal
Russia. Catherine was very proud to think of herself as an

The Mystical Weapon Of A Hero
When it comes to the archetypal hero s journey, one might see the mystical weapon as merely a box
that needs to be checked off, but the mystical weapon of a hero is much more important than that. It
serves to continue the plot of the story by jumpstarting many parts along the hero s journey, many
times it is the cause of the hero s unusual birth. The mystical weapon is what enables a hero to
overcome the insurmountable odds and accomplish their trials. A mystical weapon, is not just a tool
that the hero harnesses, but their very identity. The mystical weapon is the very thing that makes the
hero a hero. The mystical weapon is an extension of the Hero s self. It is their defining characteristic
and the shining beacon that shows to their world exactly why they are special. A hero without their
weapon is powerless, and becomes nothing more than a common man. The mystical weapon has a
great effect on the hero s story, one of the places where this impact can be seen most easily is with the
unusual birth of the hero. A hero is always someone who was born differently than most, whether it is
being born into royalty or severe poverty. Many times their unusual circumstances are a direct effect
of their abilities or other times it serves to cement their power and resolve as a hero. A great example
of this relationship is within the story of Harry Potter. Harry starts out as a normal kid within his world
of magic and mystery, but the normal path that he was traveling was quickly

A Summary OfLetters From The Corrugated Castle
In Letters from the Corrugated Castle, a 13 year old girl named Eldora writes a series a letters
describing everything that is going on in her life. She had believed for years that her mother had
passed away when she was quite young. Eldora lived with a very nice couple who had been very kind
and taken Eldora in as their own. Eldora called them Aunt and Uncle. At the beginning of the story,
Aunt, Uncle, and Eldora all packed up their belongings from their home in New Bedford,
Massachusetts and left for a new life in the chaotic city of San Francisco, California.
One day, Eldora received a letter from her mother explaining a lot of unanswered questions. Eldora
was thrilled to know that her mother was not dead, and was alive and quite well. Eldora s mother said
that she would soon come by to pay Eldora a visit and to tell her why she had been unable to care for
her the past few years. However every time she was due to visit, she would have something come up
and not be able to visit. Until after about the 3rd reschedule, when she was finally able to come into
the city for a visit. Eldora was scintillating with happiness and very eager to see her mother for the
first time in what felt like forever. When she saw her mother and she immediately began to look for
every similarity, such as eyes, voice, hair, even the way that she walked.
Aunt seemed to have quite a few questions about why and how everything had happened. So mother

A Brief Note On The American Association Of Orthopedic...
FIC AIMS
Background and problem to be addressed: According to the American Association of Orthopedic
Surgeon s (AAOS), chondrosarcomas are the second leading cause of bone cancers, as well as the
most difficult to treat (1). Currently, the only effective treatment includes chemotherapy and wide
surgical resection of the bone and cartilaginous tissue surrounding the tumor, which is incredibly
invasive and painful for the patient (2). Depending on the location of the tumor, however, surgical
resection might not always be possible. Also, if the margin is not wide, the tumor can recur.
Alternatives to resection include debulking and intralesional surgery, but these are associated with a
recurrence rate of up to 93% (3,4). Therefore, developing a less invasive alternative treatment would
be a significant advancement in quality of life for patients with chondrosarcomas.
Long term goal: The long term goal of this research program is to find effective treatment for
chondrosarcomas. Here, we propose to test whether iron depletion therapy can be used to improve
outcome for patients with chondrosarcoma tumors. A first step toward reaching this initial goal is to
test whether iron deprivation controls tumor cell growth in vitro and in a rat model.
Hypothesis: Our experimental model will utilize chondrosarcoma cell lines that will be studied in
tissue culture and in rats. We hypothesize that chondrosarcoma cancer cell lines depleted of serum iron
will exhibit decreased growth and

##otional And Psychological Blindness In Raymond Carver s...
Being blind manifest itself in a lot of ways. The most harmful type of this condition may be figurative
blindness of one s own situations and ignorance towards the feelings of others. Within Raymond
Carver s short story Cathedral, the narrator s emotional and psychological blindness is at once
obvious. The narrator faces many issues as well as the turn around experienced at the culmination of
the tale are the main ideas for the theme of this story; and these ideas aid the narrator in eventually
develop the character transformation by simply regarding the literal blind man in a positive light.
The narrators statement at the very beginning of the story explains his own lack of knowledge about
physical blindness. His lack of knowledge relating to the visitor s disability is not deniable, yet he
makes it very clear that he is aware of his ignorance, saying that he was not happy about his visit. He
was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In
the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes seeing eye dogs led them. A blind
man in my house was not something I looked forward to. (90) These statements explain his entire
attitude about Robert, the house guest, and other blind people in general at the onset of the story,
giving the narrator an instant feeling of exactly who the narrator and even what he may turn out to be.

It was once again a sunny May day at Voyageurs National Park. I had been there for almost a week

seemed unlikely since I was booked for the week at the Kettle Falls Hotel. I still don t understand why
they put the only hotel available inside the park on the one tiny island with water surrounding all
sides! I find this idea that rowing everywhere to be adventurous, is highly moronic. I want to be able

Ah ha! I said, realizing my phone was placed in my pocket! NO! Oh no! My phone is dead! Oh no!
There was nothing I could do except pick a route and continue on it. I started walking through the
trees. I took a few turns, just to keep it even. The sun was setting. I couldn t stop thinking of the
pictures I saw on the internet. It was so beautiful! This was starting to seem less beautiful and more
dangerously terrifying. The night began to deepen and the nightly noises were coming. There were
wolves howling, and bears growling! It couldn t become much worse. At least that s what I thought. I
then stepped in a puddle of mud and squashed a pile of what I hoped was berries. I heard something in
the bushes. I it w w was a b b b bear! I ran as fast as I had ever moved in my entire existence. I was
about to be eaten by a growling, starving...brown bear? Wait a minute, I thought as I was sprinting to
my death, Brown bears don t live in Minnesota. What is one doing in the middle of Voyageurs Park?
Just then I ran into the lake. At last! I said, The lake to the hotel! I swam as fast as I could and to my
surprise, all the lights appeared to be on. On a normal day I would have turned them off, but maybe I
forgot. The bear was still chasing me so I ran inside and petrified to turn back, I didn t close the door. I
just ran up to my room and when I got inside, there was a muffled shuffling from the corner of the
room. I figured a squirrel got into my room (again!). I began to walk over to it with a pillow. As I was
ready to strike it, the lights turned on. SURPRISE! everyone cheered. Did we fool you? one man with

A Day For Celebration
It was the Day of First Song, and celebrations echoed throughout Adiha. Her residents, supporters of
the Church, packed Civic Square and its adjacent streets. The mingling of their cheers and jeers
created a festive melody that was contagious to all. White fluorescent orbs lined every street and hung
from every doorway, fighting off nights impending darkness in recognition of Aeskar. Elm Tower
watched over the people, a bright white beacon in the fresh spring air. And this was fitting, as it was a
day for celebration. A visitor entering the city would likely be swept up by the crowd, add their own
melody to the Katharos songs, and drink merrily through the next morning. They might even lose
themselves in the cities joy, having drained one too many mugs before stumbling through an inn door.
And they would not be judged for their befuddled state, as it was indeed a day for celebration. It was
on days of celebration like these that people forgot. They might cherish time spent with friends, laugh
at their own blunders, and even chance at love. But the greatest joy of the night was in forgetting the
small hassles that plagued everyday life. The luxury of discarding these weary thoughts, even for a
single day, was priceless. Andorian Ages did not know this luxury. He looked down on the crowds
from Elm Tower. Shackled by iron chains and reputation, wishing that for one moment he could forget
the troubles that consumed his life. And so he stared, fruitlessly feigning

History of Database Technology Past and Present
The term database was popularized with the growth of the computer industry and is typically thought
of as software used to store, index, manipulate, and retrieve information (Vaughn). Database software
has been in use since the Census Bureau used a punch card system to meet the requirements for the
collection, sorting, and reporting of data for the 1890 census (National Research Council). These
earliest databases were flat file databases. The flat file style of database works well for small amounts
of data that need to be organized to be read and edited by hand. Flat file databases are made up of

For the most part these two are relatively similar. IDEA is an excellent data manipulating utility that
permits auditors to translate data files to or from word processors, relational databases, spreadsheets,
and integrated accounting systems using a number of data formats. The purpose of IDEA is to allow
external auditors to examine and sample extracted data files. IDEA software incorporates a database
that produces statistics and summaries, by extracting data that meets a specified criterion being
queried. The user can then browse through data displaying it graphically, or by printing custom
designed reports.
The ACL software uses a combination of data access, analysis and integrated reporting capabilities, to

The History Of Prehistory And History
According to the British historian E.H. Carr, The line of demarcation between prehistoric and
historical times crossed when people cease to live only in the present, and become consciously
interested both in their past and in their future. History begins with the handing down of tradition . So
prehistory is the event that happened during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. During the
prehistoric era, a number of inventions and discoveries arise. Therefore, during the Iron Age, the
prehistory gradually ended. After this era, everything that happened during prehistory is now
considered to be a history. Therefore, in order to preserve prehistory, it will be recorded as a history.
So now, the history contains the archeological materials and fossils that existed during prehistoric era.
Both prehistory and history have a stringline difference because they are somehow alike in their
purpose and significance to the society. Prehistory that later became a history provides us with details
of how people lived to survive during those early ages when there is no technological developments ...

The Last Supper Painting Comparison
Comparing and contrasting is a very simply thing to do, you take two images or structures and you
look at them side by side. You look at every detail the artist has put into the image and then you see
what one image has that the other does no. Then you look at what they both have in common.
Depending on the artists, you may find many similarities and differences, or you might not find any. In
the two images The Last Supper and Interior I found a variety of similarities and differences. To start
with, there are many differences in these two pieces of work. First, the artist are different. If you were
to study both artist you would understand that they have different techniques. Leonardo da Vinci was
alive during the 14th and 15th century. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another difference is the time period the painting were created. The Last Supper was painted in 1495
1497, long before any of us were thought of. Interior was painting in 1981, this was around the same
time our older siblings were being brought up or even some of our parents. There is about 484 years
between when each painting was painted. The next difference in the two pieces is the subject. In The
Last Supper the subject is easy to spot, Jesus is right in the middle of the painting for all eyes to be on
him. If you look up the meaning behind the painting you begin to understand why da Vinci created
this piece in the first place. The Last Supper was the last supper Christ had with his Apostles in
Jerusalem before he was crucified. I feel like the meaning has a lot to do with the subject. As you read
more into paintings history, you understand more about that painting. Interior has a while different
subject, but it might not be easy to spot at first. You have to do more research to find out the subject.
The painting is a copy of Adolf Hitler s office of state. I believe that the subject is the fire in the

The Election Year Is A Great Leader Of Our Country Essay
Every four years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, a Presidential Election is held to
determine who the new leader of our country will be. The election year is a very important time;
however, this year it is more crucial to cast your vote than previous years, simply because of one
particular candidate running must be prevented from becoming president. Most officials running for
this type of position are humans you can trust, believe in, and count on. However, the particular
candidate as mentioned earlier, Hilary Clinton, is not a person with these three qualities. Not only can
she not be trusted, believed in, or counted on, she is also a liar, a murderer, and a manipulating nasty
woman. Hilary has been the cause of many deaths, including those murdered in Benghazi and trillions
of abortions throughout the United States. She has been found guilty of releasing thousands of
confidential, government emails to the public, and she has no protection plan for the safety of our
country and our families against illegal emigration. These key points should all influence American
individuals to vote against Hilary Clinton, because she is the worst candidate in America s voting

Events and Treaties of World War I
Introduction In history class we are currently discussing the events and treaties of World War 1. I
found this subject very interesting and the fact that many soldiers suffered from Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder piqued my curiosity. My teacher discussed how towards the end of the war soldiers portrayed
symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and often fled during war which led to most of them
being captured by their government and killed. I want to learn more about this topic because it is very
interesting to me. I also want to learn more about why instead of finding out why the soldiers were
acting out of the ordinary they just killed them. While I am researching this topic I hope to become
better with my time management skills and also become an all around better writer. This research
question will help me evolve into a better world learner because it will help teach me some things
about the history of our world. World War 1 occurred between a number of different countries. Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder during World War 1 also not only affected Americans it affected other
countries as well because of the shell shock soldiers were experiencing in the trenches. I am planning
to take many different approaches when I am answering this question. I plan on researching many
different first hand accounts while also using different books and internet resources. I hope to be able
to get accounts about what happened from generations of people whose families actually went

that helps tell everyone what the rights of children/young people are, although it is important it is not

data protection, information handling and sharing.
Sharing information is the solution to improving beneficial outcomes for all children. It is essential to
facilitate early intervention and preventative work for safeguarding children. All professionals
involved with children must know and understand what to do and the most effective ways of sharing
information about children who are at risk of abuse or neglect. In some situations, sharing information
with a family about their child could seem good practice, but it is not crucial e.g. where evidence of
abuse or neglect could be destroyed or removed by a parent/carer or where a child could be placed at
an increased risk when parents/carers have this knowledge.

World War Two And Its Effect On The World
World War Two
World War Two began in 1939 and it when for six year, World War Two lasted until both the Germans
and the Japanese had surrendered in 1945, which was six years after it began. It began in September
1939 when Britain and France declared war on Germany after Germany had invaded Poland. January
1933 Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany and he immediately he secretly built up Germany s
army and weapons. In 1934 he made the size of the army bigger and he began to build warships and
he created a German air force. Britain and France were aware of Germany preparing for war but they
were concerned about the rise of Communism and they thought that if Germany was stronger, it might
prevent the spread of Communism. In 1936 German troops entered Rhineland, they weren t very
strong at this point and they couldn t of been defeated easily by France or England but neither of them
were prepared for war. Germany s next step was to take back the land that was originally theirs and in
March 1938 German troops moved into Austria, the Austrian leader was forced to hold a vote to see if
Austria wanted to be apart of Germany. The voting results shows that were fixed and 99% of people
wanted to be in union with Germany. Austria looked for help from France and Britain and hitter
promised that it was the last of Germany spreading because he didn t want war. Hitler lied and in
March 1939 invaded Czechoslovakia. Despite the Czechoslovakian government asking for help either

Medea The Rose
The play of Medea and the film The Name of the Rose are two very complex pieces of literature. They
have many themes that flow through them and may require one to watch each piece more than once.
However, there are similar themes that can be identified between the two. For instance, they both have
themes of narration, murder, pre meditated murder, ego, and lust to name a few. I will analyze the
themes of narration and murder between Euripidies Medea and The Name of the Rose .
The nurse of Medea opens the play with the narration of the events that took place just before the play
actually begins and sets the tone for the rest of the play. She sets the tone of despair and tragedy when
she states, For then my mistress Medea would not have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

June In Erdrich s Love Medicine
June is an alcoholic who cannot manage to keep a job. She tried everything, from beautician to
secretary, however everything she tried fell through (9). She has a problem with alcohol. Her sisters
blame her death on her drinking problem, saying she probably drank too much (9). Despite these
negative traits, Erdrich develops her character into a multi dimensional portrait by allowing people to
have varying views on June. In fact the novel is split into many perspectives, which challenges the
reader to consider everything from multiple viewpoints. Her niece Albertine remembers her as so
sharp and determined (9). Albertine s view of June presents her in a different light, which enables the
reader to consider a different perspective of June. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to convey the trait of poverty, Erdrich employs the use of imagery, even the setting reflects
their impoverished state. In the beginning of the novel, the road leading towards the reservation is
described as having ruts and holes (11). The surrounding land was a dull tan the dry ditches, the dying
crops (11). Erdrich s visual imagery gives the reader a mental image of a desolate environment. In
addition, Erdrich references dust twice on page eleven, giving the impression of the prairies during the
dustbowl, which occurred during the 1930 s when the world was going through the Great Depression,
allowing the reader to subconsciously connect the environment of the reservation as poor, neglected
and bleak. The grim environment creates sympathy for the female characters, many of whom live on
the reservation. In addition, there is the alliteration of the letter d . This emphasises the poverty in
which these characters live in by bringing attention to the dull , dry and dying environment of the
reservations. Despite the despondent surroundings, Erdrich s poetic style pushes the reader to consider
this environment as a home, rather than merely a disgusting

A Hero With A Thousand Faces By Joseph Campbell
The Explication of All Monomythical Figures Countless cultures and religions gather around
campfires and even hold ceremonies to hear a good hero story. But little do they know that these
traditional stories that they are oh so eager to listen to, are all alike someway, somehow. All heroes in
all cultures, dating from the earliest hero story written, miraculously follow a sequence of events
called a mononmyth/heroes Journey. The ineffable spectacle of the mononmyth is that despite the
thousands of miles between ancient civilizations it was subconsciously present in the psychology of
all the hero writers. Joseph Campbell, an established psychologist stated his identification of the
monomyth in his book, A Hero with a Thousand Faces. But, Campbell not only explained the
monomyth in great detail, but he also elaborated into the psychology of humans. He did this by
elucidating the exact steps in every hero s journey, and providing factual proof. The initial belief is
that no matter what the circumstance is, No matter past or present, man or woman, the heroes all have
the same initiation. Here Campbell states that, Whether hero ridiculous or sublime, Greek ... Show

But to fully grasp an audience, with twelve to fifteen steps is a lot to explain. Joseph Campbell gisted
the essential components of the mononmyth as a whole, The standard path of the mythological hero is
a magnification of the formula represented in the rights of a passage: separation initiation return (23).
In these simple steps Campbell identified the foundation of all monomyths. In separation, the hero
ventures astray from their later prosaic life into a region of supernatural wonder (23).Initiation,
overzealous figures/forces are encountered and a decisive victory is won (23).Lastly,the now master of
the narrative returns from the surreptitious journey with bestowed power

An Indian Woman In Guatemala Essay example
An Indian Woman In Guatemala
Guatemala is the land of Eternal Springs and the home of the richly cultured and historic Mayan
people. It it also the country of Rigoberta Menchu, an illiterate farm worker, turned voice of oppressed
people everywhere. Guatemala also has the sad distinction of being home to Latin America s oldest
civil war.
For more than three decades, left wing guerrillas have fought a series of rightist governments in
Guatemala. The war has killed an estimated 140,000 in the country, which has 11 million people.
(N.Y. Times June 14, 1996 pA4 col 2)

There is nothing like the bible in her culture. She says, The Bible is written, and that gives us one

the past, on prophecy.
Her own history and the history of her family is told with great detail in the book I, Rigoberta
Menchu. Not only does one learn about the culture of her people and about the community in which
she lives, but an understanding is gained as to impetus to react against ones oppressor. Born the sixth
child to an already impoverished but well respected family, Rigoberta remembers growing up in the
mountains on land that no one else wanted, spending months at a time going with her family to work
on the fincas (plantations).
A lorry owned by the finca would come to their village, and the workers, along with their children and
animals, would ride together, in filthy and overcrowded conditions. Each lorry would hold
approximately forty people, and the trip to the finca took two nights and one day, with no stops
allowed for the bathroom, it is easy to imagine the unsanitary condition that resulted. Each worker
would take with them a cup and a plate and a bottle for water when they worked in the fields. The
youngest of the children that were not yet able to work had no need for their own cup and plate since,
if they did not work, they would not be fed by the finca. These children s

  • 2. Wilfred Owen Techniques Wilfred Owens war poetry Good morning/afternoon teacher and peers, Wilfred Owen was born in 1893 in Oswestry (United Kingdom). He wanted to be a poet from the age of nineteen although most of his famous work is that which he wrote in his years spent in the war where he died in 1918. The preface to Owens poetry read: This book is not about heroes. English poetry is not yet fit to speak of them. Nor is it about deeds, or lands, nor anything about glory, honour, might, majesty, dominion, or power, except war. Above all I am not concerned with Poetry. My subject is war, and the pity of war. The poetry is in the pity. To help tell you how Owen uses poetic techniques to achieve the objective stated above i will provide an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Figurative language, as with most poetry, is readily used in much of Owens work because it helps to create tone and communicate emotion effectively. Let s take a look at the poem mental cases for a few examples of figurative language. Metaphor, misery swelters surely we have perished. Simile, bearing teeth that leer like skulls teeth wicked? And also the poem disabled where we see an example of personification in the line that speaks of how the town used to swing so gay. Symbolism when it tells of the disabled man wearing his ghastly suit of gray, the gray symbolises the dullness and shadows that now hang over him. We often see the use of oxymoron s and paradox when something is being contrasted within a poem such as a line from the poem dulce et decorum est, gas! GAS! Quick boys! An ecstasy of fumbling which is used to describe the controlled panic which quickly increases as the men fumble to put on thier gas masks. A good example of a paradox also from this poem is the line that Owen writes the devil, sick of sick this is a paradox because the devil is a personification of sin, this is just another way he portrays how horrific war is. Rhetorical features are used by Wilfred Owen as it heightens the effect of the language, to create a more persuasive effect. Repetition is often used weather this be to make the poem sound monotonous when read such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You should review the facilities or services they have to offer, for example, the treatment programs, professionals, ratings, location, and what they charge for these services. So after doing my research on some treatment centers in my area, I chose Outreach located in Ridgewood Queens. I chose this center because it is close to home and they offer a wide range of services, such as, long term residential substance abuse treatment to adolescents. I thought I would be interesting to visit and I see what these young ones are going through and how the treatment center is helping them. I was a little unsettled before visiting ... • 5. Natural And Natural Sublime Many different natural and manmade things can be interpreted as aesthetically sublime. Things that are sublime are all around, and they attract a lot of attention from the public. Most tourist attractions are considered sublime. The sublime portrays the strong emotions of awe that people have when they see powerful forces of the natural world. Along with tourist attractions being sublime, most art pieces, especially paintings, are sublime. While some artists paint natural, sublime scenes like mountains, volcanoes, and waterfalls, the artists Erich Mercker, Hans Müller, and Fritz Gärtner demonstrate the sublime by painting industrial scenes that are immense in size and contain bright orange molten metal which creates feelings of power and fear. The sublime describes the awe and shock that people experience when they see something that is enormous in size. David Rodgers summarizes the works of a man named Longinus, who is credited as the first person to define the sublime. Longinus defines it as differing from beauty and evoking more intense emotions by vastness, a quality that inspires awe. Whereas beauty may be found in the small, the smooth, the light and the everyday, the sublime is vast, irregular, obscure and superhuman (Rodgers, 1996, pg. 889). He explains that the sublime is more than just beauty because the sublime captures the massive size of these objects that creates wonderment. Along with Longinus writing about the vast and sheer awe that the sublime creates, Immanuel Kant also explains his definition of the sublime. Kant explains that the physical properties, whether actually or imaginative perceived, that were generally accorded to the sublime by 18th century writers, were vastness, obscurity and irregularity, all of which could evoke a degree of terror (Rodgers, 1996 pg. 890). He also agreed that the impressive size of things helped make them sublime. Overall, the sublime explains the wonderment and awe that someone feels when looking at something that is huge and impressive. A painting that portrays the sublime is Mercker s Copper Mill at Duisburg on Rhine River (Türk, 2003, p. 266). The painting shows a large factory that is right on a river, and the machines present in the painting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Cultural Heritage Protection During Armed Conflict Introduction The destruction of cultural heritage during armed conflict has become the forefront issue within the international discourse on its legal protection in the last several decades. Many scholars and professionals have contributed to the development of international legal instruments concerning cultural heritage protection. This thesis analyzes the existing international legal instruments to demonstrate their practical application, or lack there of, in recent armed conflict situations vis à vis the changing paradigm in the execution of war. The complexity of the issue of law and cultural heritage protection during armed conflict is that it involves a variety of disciplines: anthropology, archeology, architecture, conservation, law, international affairs, politics and philosophy among others. Therefore when addressing the issue, all disciplines, as well as the many stakeholders involved, must be considered and challenged. Nevertheless, this thesis focuses on a legal analysis of cultural heritage protection during armed conflict to establish the importance that cultural heritage has on humanity at large and to emphasize the role of the international community in its safeguarding. The conceptual basis of this thesis is cultural heritage, therefore a critical analysis of the ideology associated with the terms, culture and heritage, is fundamental to understanding their development throughout time and within international legal instruments. • 8. Puritan Origins Of The American Wilderness Movement Summary Many people that go out and enjoy the wilderness or the outdoors head to those places because they need to get away from the world and relax. The opportunity you have to go out and enjoy these beautiful areas all started with the beginning of this country by many men and their ideas and views of the outdoors. I will conduct a rhetorical analysis of J. Baird Callicott and Priscilla Solis Ybarra s article, The Puritan Origins of the American Wilderness Movement, and critique there use of rhetorical appeals in order to show that their article was written successfully. J. Baird Callicott and Priscilla Solis Ybarra are both professors at the University of North Texas and the situation they are explaining is that the wilderness was once seen as a wild place filled with beasts that couldn t be tamed. They include positive examples to help get there point across like, It was their God ordained destiny to transform the dismal American wilderness into an earthly paradise, governed according to the Word of God (Calliscott, Ybarra). • 10. Cricothyroid Stereotypes Regardless of gender, humans tend to start their lives with similar capacities and productions. All genders are born with a larynx, our primary organ for vibration, which biologically functions to keep air flowing through the respiratory system and keep foreign objects out. Additionally, children s vocal folds have an average fundamental frequency, or vocal fold vibration, of 250 Hz per second. However, the larynx also has the nonbiological function of acting as a vibratory source for speech. This is a complex system and so produces a lot of variety in speech, particularly between men and women. Therefore, vocal production becomes indicative of how a person is perceived, partially based on societal assumptions. For cisgender individuals this results in an accurate representation, but transgender individuals are often betrayed by their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cricothyroid approximation involves moving the cricoid cartilage backward and upward and thyroid cartilage forward and downward. The cricothyroid allows the thyroid to rock while the cricoid is stationary, causing the folds to stretch; performing surgery on it brings the cartilages closer together, increasing tension, and thereby allows one to achieve a more desired pitch. This surgery is done through a neck incision, which makes the Adam s apple look smaller, possibly giving the individual a more preferred look in addition to the pitch change. For Commissure advancement, a center strip of the anterior commissure is cut from the thyroid cartilage. The vocal cords are then detached in the subperichondrial plane, and the cartilage strip is advanced and secured using a metal splint (American, 2003). A successful surgery tightens and increases tension in the vocal folds. Commissure advancement and endolaryngeal shortening can increase one s fundamental frequency by 40 to 50 Hz (American, ... • 11. Themes in Blue Velvet Exploring the Dark Side: Contrasting Themes in Blue Velvet The subconscious psyche is one of the most fascinating and almost completely inexplicable aspects of human behavior. Even more intriguing than merely the subconscious is the notion of a darker, more repressed side that many individuals refuse to acknowledge exists within them. In David Lynch s film Blue Velvet, the director attempts to explore the psyche of a young man named Jeffrey Beaumont, most notably the clash between his darker side and good side for the first time in his life. Using themes that sharply contrast one another, Lynch provides insight into the character of Jeffrey and the struggle that he is faced with. Jeffrey is in a transitional period of his life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lynch chooses to use such stark contrast in an effort to establish not only the differences in one s perception, but of the psyche as well. The opening sequence is used by Lynch as a metaphor for Jeffrey s state of mind throughout the entire film, as Jeffrey realizes he has a dark side yet is trying (most of the time) to suppress it. The town of Lumberton, like Jeffrey, is an idealized version of what America and Americans should be like and yet, much like Jeffrey s mind, it is full of dark secrets and contradictions. One aspect of Jeffrey s psyche being explored is the notion of his battle between innocent love for a young girl and the animalistic lust he possesses for an older, more mature woman. The good or innocent side of Jeffrey is personified in the character of Sandy. Sandy is often depicted wearing light colors, with blue eyes and perfectly brushed blonde hair. When Sandy is first introduced into the film, she enters through utter darkness, stepping out of the shadows and into the light in a medium shot. Lynch follows this up with a long reverse tracking two shot in which Jeffrey and Sandy make small talk and innocently flirt with one another. Dorothy s introduction into the film, however, is quite different. The film first truly introduces the audience and Jeffrey to Dorothy with a subjective shot from her closet. After breaking into Dorothy s apartment and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is the most frequent place people visit in Atlanta. The biggest problem with downtown is not the lack of parking spaces but there are too many people driving there at once. Most parking available in downtown cost money and time. Even the parking spaces available are very limited and not everyone could afford it. The parking decks in downtown belong to some companies. Most of those companies even make their own employee pay for it. As for the city, they have some free parking spaces which are limited to the public. Many of those parking spaces in Downtown Atlanta are usually not free. Atlanta is not the only state in America who does not provide free parking for their customers, workers, or tourists alike. For instance New York downtown charges for their parking. They are many parking meters on the sides of the roads where you can park your car for a limited period of time. Volley fire against massed troops delivered effective projectiles out to 200 yards, but at 300 yards balls from muzzle loaders lost most of their lethality. Also, while well trained soldiers could load and shoot their muskets five times per minute, volley fire led to a collective rate of only two to three shots per minute. This tactic was mostly used up until World War I, where trench warfare became the dominant and obvious tactic due to the introduction to large artillery. Trench warfare is the obvious solution because when on the battlefield, death rains to everywhere that can be seen at eye level, the only obvious idea is to dig down because machine guns can not shoot through the ground. Trench warfare was a puzzle to break and with each week it was not solved, millions lost their lives. When tanks entered the battlefield in 1916, the barbed wire was able to be broken and the fire from the enemy was useless. This is where the next tactic came to age, the blitzkreig. The blitzkrieg, translated to lightning warfare, was most notably used by the Nazi German army by combining fast moving tanks and dive bombing aircraft to take the area and infantry to hold the area. Within a little over a year of the first attack of Czechoslovakia, the Nazis were able to conquer all of europe using this tactic. The problem with this is that it is not very defensive. Once both the Soviets and the Allied forces broke through the main line, it took 9 months to capture Berlin. Some credit this victory for the Allies for the mass amount of propaganda first developed in World War I and perfected in World War 2. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, in The Book Thief the thief is in fact not a man in a black mask but a girl. The definition of a thief is someone who steals items of important value resulting in negative consequences for the victim. Throughout the book, Death says that Liesel is stealing these books, but when examined closely, it seems as if some of the books she stole weren t really stolen, but rather given to her in an indirect way. During Liesel s first days as a Hubermann, she gets to meet Ilsa Hermann, the cold and distant wife of the mayor, who at this point in the book, appears to be another lazy privileged client of Rosa Hubermann, the hardworking, underprivileged service provider. However, as the book progresses the importance of Ilsa Hermann increases because of something she possesses. Books. Ilsa Hermann has a lot of them, so much that it attracted one girl. Human growth and development is studied and researched with differing perspectives. There are many ways human growth and development can be looked at. Certain disciplines, such as, biology, psychology and sociology all have opposing viewpoints on the subject. The psychological viewpoint concentrates on the different processes of the mind, whereas, the biological approach is centred on genetics and environmental factors. The sociological viewpoint, however, focuses on individual thoughts and feelings as being socially constructed (Beckett and Taylor, 2010). For example, according to Hart, Blincow and Thomas, resilient therapy may help a child in gaining good relationships with family and friends by tapping into good influences and finding place for that child to belong. Resilient therapy recognises the importance of attachment theory and aims for the affected child to feel a sense of family cohesion. According to Hart, Blincow and Thomas,in providing a resilient mechanism, two things are achieved. Firstly, a sense of belonging, as this is protective and gives children a secure base to attend; psychologically, when feeling under threat. Secondly, with children experiencing a self of belonging somewhere, they are better equipped in facing rejection elsewhere. Further to the attachment theory, Bowlby derived the term maternal deprivation, (Bowlby, 1959). Bowlby identified the first two years of a child s life as the most critical time for bonding. Bowlby hypothesised that if there was a lack of parent and caregiver bonding by the age of 2 then maternal deprivations may result in the child suffering psychological damages that may be irreversible. According to Bowlby, children who suffered maternal deprivation at a young age may often become incapable of expressing empathetic emotions and affection later into their adult life. The Mystical Weapon Of A Hero When it comes to the archetypal hero s journey, one might see the mystical weapon as merely a box that needs to be checked off, but the mystical weapon of a hero is much more important than that. It serves to continue the plot of the story by jumpstarting many parts along the hero s journey, many times it is the cause of the hero s unusual birth. The mystical weapon is what enables a hero to overcome the insurmountable odds and accomplish their trials. A mystical weapon, is not just a tool that the hero harnesses, but their very identity. The mystical weapon is the very thing that makes the hero a hero. The mystical weapon is an extension of the Hero s self. It is their defining characteristic and the shining beacon that shows to their world exactly why they are special. A hero without their weapon is powerless, and becomes nothing more than a common man. The mystical weapon has a great effect on the hero s story, one of the places where this impact can be seen most easily is with the unusual birth of the hero. A hero is always someone who was born differently than most, whether it is being born into royalty or severe poverty. Many times their unusual circumstances are a direct effect of their abilities or other times it serves to cement their power and resolve as a hero. FIC AIMS Background and problem to be addressed: According to the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeon s (AAOS), chondrosarcomas are the second leading cause of bone cancers, as well as the most difficult to treat (1). Currently, the only effective treatment includes chemotherapy and wide surgical resection of the bone and cartilaginous tissue surrounding the tumor, which is incredibly invasive and painful for the patient (2). Depending on the location of the tumor, however, surgical resection might not always be possible. Also, if the margin is not wide, the tumor can recur. Alternatives to resection include debulking and intralesional surgery, but these are associated with a recurrence rate of up to 93% (3,4). Therefore, developing a less invasive alternative treatment would be a significant advancement in quality of life for patients with chondrosarcomas. Long term goal: The long term goal of this research program is to find effective treatment for chondrosarcomas. Here, we propose to test whether iron depletion therapy can be used to improve outcome for patients with chondrosarcoma tumors. A first step toward reaching this initial goal is to test whether iron deprivation controls tumor cell growth in vitro and in a rat model. Like, I will probably never be struck by lightning, or win a Nobel Prize, or become the dictator of a small nation in the Pacific Islands, or contract terminal ear can cer, or spontaneously combust. But if you consider all the unlikely things together, at least one of them will probably happen to each of us. I could have seen it rain frogs. I could have stepped foot on Mars. I could have been eaten by a whale. I could have married the queen of England or survived months at sea. But my miracle was different. My miracle was this: out of all the houses in all the subdivisions in all of Florida, I ended up living next door to Margo Roth Spiegelman. Our subdivision, Jefferson Park, used to be a navy base. I got up and opened the window, but the screen stayed between us, pixelating her. I did an investigation, she said quite seriously. Even up close the screen broke her face apart, but I could tell that she was holding a little notebook and a pencil with teeth marks around the eraser. She glanced down at her notes. • 38. The Last Supper Painting Comparison Comparing and contrasting is a very simply thing to do, you take two images or structures and you look at them side by side. You look at every detail the artist has put into the image and then you see what one image has that the other does no. Then you look at what they both have in common. Depending on the artists, you may find many similarities and differences, or you might not find any. In the two images The Last Supper and Interior I found a variety of similarities and differences. To start with, there are many differences in these two pieces of work. First, the artist are different. If you were to study both artist you would understand that they have different techniques. Leonardo da Vinci was alive during the 14th and 15th century. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another difference is the time period the painting were created. The Last Supper was painted in 1495 1497, long before any of us were thought of. Interior was painting in 1981, this was around the same time our older siblings were being brought up or even some of our parents. There is about 484 years between when each painting was painted. The next difference in the two pieces is the subject. In The Last Supper the subject is easy to spot, Jesus is right in the middle of the painting for all eyes to be on him. If you look up the meaning behind the painting you begin to understand why da Vinci created this piece in the first place. The Last Supper was the last supper Christ had with his Apostles in Jerusalem before he was crucified. I feel like the meaning has a lot to do with the subject. As you read more into paintings history, you understand more about that painting. Interior has a while different subject, but it might not be easy to spot at first. You have to do more research to find out the subject. The painting is a copy of Adolf Hitler s office of state. I believe that the subject is the fire in the middle of the room. The reasoning for the first in the room is said to be an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Election Year Is A Great Leader Of Our Country Essay Every four years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, a Presidential Election is held to determine who the new leader of our country will be. The election year is a very important time; however, this year it is more crucial to cast your vote than previous years, simply because of one particular candidate running must be prevented from becoming president. Most officials running for this type of position are humans you can trust, believe in, and count on. However, the particular candidate as mentioned earlier, Hilary Clinton, is not a person with these three qualities. Not only can she not be trusted, believed in, or counted on, she is also a liar, a murderer, and a manipulating nasty woman. Hilary has been the cause of many deaths, including those murdered in Benghazi and trillions of abortions throughout the United States. She has been found guilty of releasing thousands of confidential, government emails to the public, and she has no protection plan for the safety of our country and our families against illegal emigration. These key points should all influence American individuals to vote against Hilary Clinton, because she is the worst candidate in America s voting history. A lot of people don t educate themselves to learn about what is going on in our country. They don t take the time to see for themselves who is involved in what and what decisions are being made daily. They simply just live life oblivious to their surroundings, especially when it comes to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The grim environment creates sympathy for the female characters, many of whom live on the reservation. In addition, there is the alliteration of the letter d . A Hero With A Thousand Faces By Joseph Campbell The Explication of All Monomythical Figures Countless cultures and religions gather around campfires and even hold ceremonies to hear a good hero story. But little do they know that these traditional stories that they are oh so eager to listen to, are all alike someway, somehow. All heroes in all cultures, dating from the earliest hero story written, miraculously follow a sequence of events called a mononmyth/heroes Journey. The ineffable spectacle of the mononmyth is that despite the thousands of miles between ancient civilizations it was subconsciously present in the psychology of all the hero writers. Joseph Campbell, an established psychologist stated his identification of the monomyth in his book, A Hero with a Thousand Faces. But, Campbell not only explained the monomyth in great detail, but he also elaborated into the psychology of humans. He did this by elucidating the exact steps in every hero s journey, and providing factual proof.
