Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Which specific production tasks have you
enjoyed most this year?
I really enjoyed the game concept and pixel art project we did recently on
photoshop; it was the most similar task to what I enjoy out of college times, so I
had fun working on it and finding out how to do it properly and neatly. I also
enjoyed it because it didn’t really take much editing and things so I could focus
on creating the actual work and finishing my research and evaluation rather than a
bunch of small extra tasks. It also meant that I didn’t have to worry about filming
anything or anyone and then having to prepare a place to film etc, it was also good
as I wasn’t made to socialise with the people in my class and didn’t have to work
in groups with people who I don’t like working with etc.
4. What challenges have you faced this
year in your practical work?
In my practical work this year I have had to learn lots of new skills using new
software and hardware which I were unfamiliar with prior. This has been difficult
as It was something new to me, so I had to learn how to do simple tasks before I
tried anything big. I have also been made to work in groups and have had to be
filmed by new people I don’t know which was also very difficult for me, I didn’t
expect to be working with others in this way and especially being filmed, this was
a challenge for me as I can't work well with others and struggle to voice my own
opinion in these situations. I am still yet to improve this, but I believe that I
have gotten a little better since the beginning as I am now aware of the people in
my class.
5. Which process do you think you have
made the most development in?
I think that one of the things I improved the most was when I researched things for
my project, at the start of the year I was unaware of what to do to fully prepare
for a project apart from mind maps and lists but now I know that I should fully
analyse pre-existing things such as games/ magazines etc. This was a good
improvement to have as it allows me to fully prepare for production when making
something new and it just clears up any confusion that I may have pre-production.
Another big development point I had also had some development in suiting my
audience and making sure I met the requirements of what they wanted, this was
useful as it allowed me to wok around a criteria an to make sure my work is god
enough to be critiqued and checked for improvement.
6. Which technical skill do you think is you
strongest?
I think that my strongest technical skill is again, researching. Compared to the
start of the year, I am now a lot better at building a platform to wok around for
any project I do. I am able to find out about multiple different things around what
I'm researching and am able to find similar products whether that be in style,
sound, looks and a lot more. This also helps me develop every idea I get about the
work by branching out and finding me ways I can improve and finding things I can do
better; this is done by comparing existing products and what made the successful.
7. What do you think has been your best
project and why?
I think that my best project was either the game concept and animation or the music
video that I did on my own. I think that the game project was one of my best
because I had everything fully planned and didn't need to have any extra time to
complete it. Because it was also something that I enjoyed, I had a lot of
motivation to perfect it and make sure that I was completely happy with it before
handing it in. I also think that this was one of my best projects because I had
full reign and creativity over it and was allowed to create my own plot and
characters. I also think that the music video was one of my best pieces of work as
despite not enjoying the concept of the project i still managed to create a final
piece that I was happy with and thought looked cool.
8. Which project did you enjoy least and
why?
The project that I enjoyed the least was the movie/ music video, this was mainly
because we had to work in groups with people, we were unfamiliar with. Because I
didn't know anyone, I didn’t want to speak up which led to me being the one who was
forced to act, I also had no say in what we did, as in the plot, because I didn’t
want to implement my own ideas in-case they seemed stupid or were overlooked. I
also didn’t like the idea of creating a storyline for a music vide as I would have
rather just had different shots that looked appealing and matched the song instead
of cheesy plot points that weren't planned at all.
9. How have you managed your time
effectively this year?
As I have done different projects my ability to manage time had improved
massively. At the start of the year I struggled to properly set out a schedule in
order to keep myself prepared which led to me running out of time and rushing
things. However now. can keep myself in line with planning and researching, etc.
with the last project I managed my time perfectly as I was finished in time and
didn’t need to rush anything or half ass it last minute. I think personally that
you can notably see the difference from when I didn’t plan and manage my time
correctly to when I can.
11. What roles/specialism do you see
yourself working in on future projects?
In the future I see myself manly working on more digitally isolated tasks like
editing and coming up with ideas/ brainstorming etc. I hope to be working around
digital animation and concept writing for games and similar things to that, however
I wouldn't mind working in something around editing or filming as long as i am not
the one on camera.
