Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Research a sector of the industry that you are interested in working in [e.g. film
production, TV, radio, graphic design, etc]. Use the information you find to produce an
illustrated guide to that sector. Include facts about employment, skills needed,
workforce information, etc.
Task 2: Practitioner Research File [1.1]
Within your chosen sector identify someone who is a notable practitioner and produce
a fact file about them. Research their journey to where they are now; look at
education, experience, skillset and look for insightful quotes about them and by them
to build a picture of who they are and how they work.
Task 3: Five Year Plan [1.1]
Produce a plan taking into account where you are now, what you will need to do next
and how to go about that in the next 5 years. Outline educational requirements
[college, University, courses, etc], experience you will need/would like to gain and
personal development that will be necessary to you in your future plans.
5. Task 4: Music Video Process Log [2.1, 2.2]
Complete the Music Video Process Log to evidence how you worked technically during
the Music Video production phase. Screenshot and explain how you managed to get
your production finalised.
Task 5: End of Year Review [2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2]
Produce an end of year review looking at how you have worked across the year,
considering each stage of production, which productions have worked/not worked,
how you have managed your time, what skills you have developed, how you have
worked with others and how you organised your time, resources and equipment
throughout the year. You should then produce an action plan for Year 2 selecting 5 key
areas you wish to focus on to develop further.
7. Task 1: Illustrated Sector Guide [1.1]
Research a sector of the industry that you are interested in working in [e.g.
film production, TV, radio, graphic design, etc]. Use the information you find to
produce an illustrated guide to that sector. Include facts about employment,
skills needed, workforce information, etc.
8. What we want from you is research in to the part of the media industry that you are
most interested in. That could be films, magazines, video games, television,
journalism… whatever you are interested in.
Find out about that industry. What jobs roles are available? What skills do people
need to work in that industry? What level of education is needed? How diverse, or
not, is the industry?
We want some good facts and figures that you can take and then use in your
illustrated guide.
Write down the information that you find, and keep a record of where you found it.
It’s best to get lots of research, and then pick the most useful information from that.
9. When making your illustrated guide, think carefully about all the elements
involved.
A good guide will have:
• Concise information
• Consistent image style
• Clear, consistent typography
• A coherent colour scheme
All of these elements need to work together to create your guide.
10. Graphic design
Advertising and editing/ creating video.
Some job roles for this could be creating advertisements,
creating/ redesigning logos, creating album covers or editing and
creating video for people/ companies/ adverts.
To be able to work in this industry you would most likely need to
be skilled at using image and video editing software such as
photoshop and adobe premiere but should also be able to use
cameras, lighting, scenes and other skills on lots of different types
of film sets.
For creating adverts, it is suggested that you get an apprentice to
enter the business.
Starting salaries for junior graphic designers are in the region of
£15,000 to £19,000. Once you've gained some experience,
salaries can rise to £27,000.
At a middle level, you can expect to earn £25,000 to £35,000.
Salaries for senior graphic designers or creative leads range from
£35,000 to £55,000. A creative director can make £60,000+.

14. What we want from you is research a specific person that works in the part of the industry
you made your illustrated guide for. Focus on those involved in the production of media,
rather than people who just appear in it.
Find out as much as you can about them, to help you produce your fact file.
We want to know what their education was like, what experience they have and what skills
they have. Find quotes about them. Read about them. Get a good picture of who they are
and how they got to where they are.
Write down the information that you find, and keep a record of where you found it. It’s best
to get lots of research, and then pick the most useful information from that.
15. When making a fact file, think carefully about all the elements involved.
A good fact file will have:
• Concise and relevant information
• Quotes about the practitioner
• Information on their work and achievements
• Background on how they got in to the industry
• What insight you have taken from this that can help you in your
development?
This information can be presented with graphics, typography and a colour
scheme.
16. Abram Games
(29 July 1914 – 27 August 1996)
British graphic designer
He was heavily influenced by the first world war because he was
born when it started, this can be seen in his work which contains
lots of propaganda to do with helping out to win the war. Games
left Hackney Downs School at the age of 16 and, in 1930, went
to Saint Martin's School of Art in London, he left after two terms but
started working as a "studio boy" for the commercial design
firm Askew-Young and worked there for 4 years, in 1935 while he
was working there, he won a poster competition for the London
County Council. However he was fired from this position in 1936
after he jumped over four chairs as a prank. Until 1940, he worked
on his own as a freelance poster artist.
After serving in the army for a year ,In 1946 Games worked on his
own again as a freelancer and worked for clients such Royal Dutch
Shell, the Financial Times, Guinness, British Airways, London
Transport. Games was now creating posters, stamps and
redesigning logos.
Abram Games - Wikipedia
"I wind the spring and the public, in looking at the
poster, will have that spring released in its mind."
19. What are you currently doing to pursue a career in your chosen field?
I am at college doing a vocational course for level 3 media and could pursue a career in creative media such as
graphic design.
20. What do you plan to do next in the pursuit of your chosen field?
carry on doing the vocational course and probably will go into year two of the course to refine what I want to do
and or am good at.
21. Select at least three potential University courses that would help you further your career aims. You should state
what the course is, which university it is run by, the entry requirements and why you think it would help you.
University of Sheffield, Loughborough university and university of Leeds.
The course would be to do with creative media, in the case of these university's, they all have a
digital media course. The Leeds university website says that the qualifications required for the digital
media course is an BA. This type of course from one of these universities could help me get better at
creative media and make me good at one skill from media that could get me a job.
22. What type of work experience do you think you would need to help you in your future career? How might you
be able to find work experience placements? If you could pick anywhere to do work experience, where would it
be and why?
It would be helpful and interesting to do work experience within digital media to see and get a feel of what it
would be like to work in some real life scenarios.
Work experience placements could be made by looking online and or asking careers supervisors for help looking
for one withing the course I'm in.
I would like to have some work experience by working for a friend as it would be something I want to do and
would be a bit less stressful because he could be helpful and make me better at what I do. I could also work for
myself and get an idea of what that’s like.
23. What specific skills do you need to develop? There should be a mix of industry specific skills and also personal
development points. When you identify these, come up with suggestions as to how you might make those
improvements.
I would need to develop my skills within photoshop and premier pro. I would also need to gain the skills to
understand how the industry works and how to make it work for me.
I can practice with photoshop and premier pro while doing work and researching what they can do and how they
work, as well as researching the industry of media and also just experiencing it first hand.
24. In 5 years time I will…
Probably have completed my second year at college while maybe looking for some work experience during that
year, after that year, if I want to get a career in media then I would look for work experience of maybe work for
myself to get better at it and understand it more and possibly “climb a job role ladder”.
Could also work for my friend for a bit as well to get experience.
Hopefully I will have a job in media that pays well in about 5 years.
26. Task 4: Music Video Process Log [2.1, 2.2]
Complete the Music Video Process Log to evidence how you worked technically
during the Music Video production phase. Screenshot and explain how you managed
to get your production finalised.
There is a specific pro forma that you will use for this as part of your music video
production. Ensure that is completed with your Music Video project, to complete this
task.
You should then produce an action plan for Year 2 selecting 5
key areas you wish to focus on to develop further.
Complete the following slides to review your year. You can add images if you want to.
You can get screenshots from any part of your previous projects to support your work
on this.
29. Which productions have worked/not worked?
The movie poster and the music video because they where quite well
made, planned out and edited well to seem semi professional.
There where some issues with both but I think some other products
worked less like the audio ghost stories and the magazine double
page spread, they were not as well made and seem a lot less
professional, such as the double page spread not fitting the theme I
wanted it to and seeming too cluttered.
30. How you have managed your time?
I managed to do the work in the time allocated but should have
had some kind of timetable to make things more organised and
easier, however I do like switching between each parts of the
work so I could make notes on when certain things need to be
completed by.
31. What skills you have developed?
I have developed my skills in lots of software such as photoshop,
premiere pro and adobe audition, this being because I know what
a lot more of the tools do and what the software are capable of, I
also believe I have become better at creating assets for all my
products such as taking pictures, videos and recording audio as I
and am getting more use to it and coming up with more ideas
and tricks.
32. How you have worked with others?
I am lucky to have someone willing to help me with my work
sometimes but apart from that, I haven’t worked well with others
as I try my best to do everything on my own, this being because it
is hard to find people who are willing to help and then they
sometimes don’t do what you want them to do or don’t do it how
you where thinking e.g. not getting the correct angle on a
picture/ video. It is easier to do it yourself because you know
what you want but its also harder as some things require more
people to get what you want.
33. How you organised your time, resources and equipment
throughout the year?
I managed them quite well, I used the equipment I booked out to
gather all the assets I needed and used all the recourses I had to
get what I wanted or try something else, I made sure things
where done before last minute so I had some time after to tweak
things or evaluate what I needed to do.
34. Produce an action plan for Year 2 selecting 5 key areas you wish
to focus on to develop further.
Area to work on Actions to take
Time management Make some type of management table
Composition Watch tutorials and practice
photoshop Watch tutorials and practice
Managing people/ crew Try using other people to help with work
if necessary
Evaluating Reading the comments and briefes
