4 Creative Critical Reflection
How did you use integrate technology – software, hardware, online in
this project?
By Rosie Brown
Art Of The Title
• It is an online publication dedicated to title sequence design, spanning
the film, television, conference, and video game industries.
• The publication is both an educational and historical resource and a
contemporary publication, focusing on the creative process behind the
design of title sequences.
• We analyzed art of the titles to figure out how we could potentially use
some of the ideas in our film opening. We got inspiration from certain
art of the titles like Gone Girl as we liked the mysterious side or it and
how they predominantly used sound to portray a sense of
uncomfortableness and creepiness.
Netflix
• Netflix is a streaming service that allows our customers to watch a
wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and
more on thousands of internet of-connected devices.
• When researching, I used Netflix to watch a lot of different film
openings which were mostly based on crime, and more specifically on
kidnappings. But even any film openings which had a lot of drama in
it and were on the line of a thriller just so we could get an idea on
what genre would suit best.
• Netflix was a good source for research.
Scoop.it
• Scoop.it allows you to create boards of curated content based on
topics you choose. I used Scoop.it to research different articles which
closely linked to our theme and topic of our film opening. To do this I
had to create a Scoop.it account so I could do some further research
which would of helped increase my knowledge on the terrifying topic
of which is kidnapping.
• One of the Scoop.it’s that I had found was the horrific kidnapping that
took place in 1973. One of the richest men in the world refused to
pay for his own grandson's ransom when he was kidnapped. This
scoop.it really helped me understand a little bit more of what
happened in the kidnapping in more detail and we ended up basing
our film opening on this specific crime.
Google Forms
Google Forms is a web-based app developed by Google which is used to
create forms for data collection purposes. We used google forms to produce
our audience questionnaires. I created my audience questionnaire to help
identify what my target audience prefers when it comes to what genre they
like, where they first hear about a film and how often they go to the cinema.
The responses were very useful to me as they showed that 60% of the
people who responded, first hear about a film on social media. This meant
that me and my group had to create an Instagram and twitter account to
allow people to hear about our work first. Google form was really easy to
use and very effective.
YouTube
• YouTube is an American video-sharing website
• YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to playlists,
report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users. It offers a
wide variety of user-generated and corporate media videos. Available
content includes video clips, TV show clips, music
videos, short and documentary films, audio recordings, movie
trailers, live streams, and other content such as video blogging, short
original videos, and educational videos.
• We used to upload any of our videos like our banana pancakes, and
our hot seating. Uploading it allows anyone around the world to view
it.
Frank Ash, Big Question
• For Frank Ash, Creative Consultant who has taught storytelling and creativity techniques to teams
across the BBC and beyond, it is important to focus on the audience: what will interest the
audience? How will the narrative develop? His major concern is the audience.
• From this video we learn that it is important to focus on the audience. Frank Ash believes it is
important to get across the main topic of the film and the major concern is thinking about the
audience. He also thinks, the top line needs to emotionally engaging to the audiences, to catch
and draw their attention in from the beginning.
Big question:
• A good story teller should be able to synthesise the story into one top line, this is usually short,
sharp and straight to the point. This helped us to sum up are own narrative in one sentence. Then
Frank Ash added in order to hook the audience the writer needs to develop the big question as to
what is going to happen next?
Photoshop
• Photoshop is considered one of the leaders in photo editing software. The software
allows users to manipulate, crop, resize, and correct colour on digital photos. The
software is particularly popular amongst professional photographers and graphic
designers.
• To make our own certificate we found a template online, which was a 15 certificate. We
added in our own film title on it and we had to change the rating from a 15 to a 12 and
also the text so it relates to our film. We changed the color, size and font of the writing to
make it apply to our film. We took out parts of the description that didn't apply to our
film. By using Photoshop, we learnt different ways and techniques to go about editing our
certificate, these were how to add text, cover up some parts of the original certificate and
how to change the color and size of the text. All of this help developed our editing skills.
Final Cut Pro
• Final Cut Pro is an app for creating, editing, and producing the highest-quality video.
Final Cut Pro combines high-performance digital editing and native support for virtually
any video format with easy-to-use and time-saving features that let you focus on
storytelling.
• When we finished filming our film opening, we had to edit our scenes. to do this we used
Final cut pro. During our time using final Cut Pro we learnt a lot of new skills. We had to
figure out how to add non-diegetic sound, crop certain scenes and add in text.
• But we didn’t just use Final Cut Pro to edit our film opening, we used it to also create our
ident. In Final Cut Pro, we edited the text to help bring to life its name, Starlight Studios,
by designing a shooting star that tracks swiftly across the screen from left to
right, blazing a trail for the company name. Our writing is gold on a black background to
help make it stand out. We edited in diegetic spot sounds in the background to suggest
the sound of a shooting star might make in the popular imagination; this sound is rapid
and urgent, demanding attention, but also very rapid.
Canon
• When we were taking our photos for our preliminary exercises, I
learnt how to use a Canon Eos 750 D. When using the camera, I
realised how important it is to make sure it was in focus and getting
the whole image in frame. This was the first time using the camera so
I had to get an eye for how the work and how to put everything I
wanted into frame. When working with this camera, it gave excellent
quality and as I got more confidant using it I started to become more
adventurous with my different camera angles.
• We also used this camera when filming all the scenes for our film
opening. To get the perfect shots we used the Manfrotto Tri-pod
which held the camera steady.
Google maps
• Google Maps is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers
satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360° panoramic views of
streets, real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by
foot, car, bicycle and air, or public transportation.
• Call sheets are classically used in film to disseminate information to the
cast and crew to make sure everyone is prepared and on schedule. When I
created call sheets for when we filmed, I wanted to give the rest of the
group all the information they needed to show up to the right place, on the
right date, at the right time, with the right equipment, and knowing exactly
what their duties would be. This allows the filming to run smoothly,
because everyone is prepared and knows their responsibilities. We used
google maps to show where the exact location was going to be to film.
Blogger
• Blogger is a blog-publishing service a allows people to upload blogs.
We used blogger to upload and gather up any research or work that
we did, this included work like call sheets, our BBFC certificate, our
ident, our art of the titles and many more.
• Blogger was very useful as it presented our work very neatly and
smartly and it was very easy to use.
