How did you use new media technologies in
the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
Internet & Google
• When creating our movie trailer, magazine cover & poster we relied
heavily on the internet for research on other trailers, posters and
magazine covers. Researching on Google played a huge role in
our research and development for our trailer as we constantly had
to research movie plots to gain ideas and even for the small
things like searching demonic symbolism to gain more insight on
our plot. We also used Google to research for other movie
magazines of the same genre and posters to help give us an idea
of how to do ours. We then picked out ideal movie magazine
covers & posters which stood out to us and we used as a
template when making ours. Google overall allowed us to gain an
in depth insight on the codes and conventions of horror genre
magazine/poster & trailer.
YouTube
• YouTube was used massively in order to gain insight on other trailers from the
same genre and how those trailers were constructed. YouTube came very
useful at the start of the production when we were in need of plot ideas. This
gave us a variety of trailers from the horror genre with different plots allowing
us to base our ideas on those plots. Additionally YouTube also helped us think
of shot ideas, for example, When watching ‘Nothing Left to Fear’ we saw the
shot of the hand covered in blood and that gave us an idea to use someone’s
hand to make it look like there was someone going towards them.
• We also used YouTube when making our trailer, we were in need of various sound
clips e.g. screeching, bangs, screaming and many others. YouTube we also
used a fire scene which we were un able to create ourselves.
SlideShare, Prezi, Internet Movies database,
Empressr
• SlideShare & Empressr allowed us to analyse media texts in details and also helped us gain ideas
for our own trailer. It helped us look deeply into other trailers and media texts and jot down
codes and conventions which we could use in our creations. Similarly, Prezi helped us jot down
ideas and plans for what we were going to do next. It also helped us clearly differentiate
between our plans for creating the magazine, poster & trailer.
• We used IMDb for looking into other horror movies for inspiration for movie titles related to demonic
cults. From this we came up with ‘The Devil’s Mark’.
• Survey Monkey was vastly used when we were in need of feedback or needed to decide on one
thing out of many. For example when we couldn’t decide on which title to pick for our movie we
made a survey and the our classmates helped us pick which one complimented our plot the
best. Additionally, when we first started we couldn’t decide whether we wanted the genre Teen
Rom/Com or Horror. We then conducted a survey and everyone voted for Horror.
Blogger
• Blogger allowed us to create our joint blog as we were working as a pair. This
allowed us to illustrate our journey from when we started making our media
products till when we finished. It allowed us to post our every update on making
these media products and helped us keep track of everything we did.
• We were able to embed YouTube clips on Blogger and this allowed us to be
practical and keep up with everything we have done, and then decide whether
we wanted to change something in our products including this evaluation.
Filming- video camera, stills camera, tripod, microphone, lights
and cradle
• Video Camera, Cradle and Tripod:
All shots for the movie trailer were captured on a video camera, this was easy and practical to use
in all of the different shots we needed . However we had a few problems when needing this to be
stable in certain shots, it made some footage look unprofessional as the camera was not perfectly
still. However the cradle and tripod fixed this problem and ensured we had still professional looking
footage.
• Stills Camera
This was used when taking images for the poster and magazine cover. This was very easy to use
and allowed us to capture good quality pictures to use.
• Microphone:
The microphone allowed us to record voice/sound effectively, even the delicate sounds which were
natural and made the footage seem more real, it picked up even the smallest sounds we
deliberately made like twig snapping
• The Light:
The light was extremely useful as we filmed in the evening where it was dark and the video camera
wouldn’t pick up what was going on. Although sometimes it was too bright and took away the
realism of the shots.
Premier Software
Adobe Premier is what we used to put all of our shots in the order we wanted them to be,
add effects, put sound effects in and add text in the trailer. To begin with we were unaware of
the kind of effects that premier had, it was only until we played around we discovered these
effects which made the shots look darker and added to the night effect. We added tints to the
shots which made them look darker and also added effects such as ‘earthquake’ to make the
shots seem harder to see for the audience, taking away any flaws we had made in the
filming initially. Adobe premier also allowed us to cut time on scenes where we had made
mistakes or the shots seemed too long and also crop scenes where other people were in the
shots. Additionally we also changed the motion of the shots to either faster or slower to add
thrill. An example of this would be with the last shot when the character is getting dragged by
someone and that was slow initially, however by speeding up the motion and adding a
screaming soundtrack it was made to look more scary. We were also able to make the sound
captured with the shots louder and less volume with Adobe meaning they looked more
professional.
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop allowed us to edit the pictures we took for the magazine and poster. For the
poster
Photoshop had many tools which allowed us to make pictures look darker, like the Burn tool.
We were also able to place an image over another image and make it look asif it was one
picture, using the Clone & Stamp tool and Blue tool. We were also able to crop the image so
that the flaws were not visible, e.g. the people walking in the back. The Clone & Stamp tool
also allowed us to make the woods look more dense asif there were more trees which made
the location seem more spooky.
For the magazine Photoshop also allowed us to edit the image effectively. For this we also
used the Burn Tool to darken her features on her face making her look more chilling spooky.
However the burn tool sometimes when over-used made the image lose colour which was
needed. So we had to ensure we used it the right amount.
Technologies used for Evaluation
I used a range of different technologies to compile my evaluation, such as Prezi,
Sound cloud clip with images, a blog post and SlideShare.
I used Prezi for question 1 so that its easy to see step to step how we decided
on every convention for our magazine and poster. I decided on using a sound
clip for question two as it would be easily explainable verbally. And I decided on
doing a blog post for question 3 as there are many print screens and photos
scanned in needed on that question, and I decided on a SlideShare on this
question as everything needed explaining in details and a slide for each piece of
technology would be ideal
