The document discusses the creation and effectiveness of ancillary texts, including a poster and radio trailer, for a film project. It describes the process of analyzing similar promotion materials to identify conventions and developing ideas based on the film's genre, tone, and goal of creating suspense. Feedback was gathered from peers on draft designs. The radio trailer utilized sound clips and music from the film along with pertinent details to engage listeners. The poster featured symbolic imagery and fonts/layouts common in other drama posters. In conclusion, the ancillary texts effectively promoted the film while representing its atmosphere and ideas without revealing too much of the plot.
Other ways our documentary uses convention of existing documentaries. Is the use of sound bedding, which is used during the during the voice over, interview and as a soundtrack for the beginning of the episode. Sound bedding/track is an instrumental sound usually from the song that the cast produced or from a featured song that relates to the genre. We used sound bedding because it helps the audience capture what is going on.
Actuality footage was used during the interview of Kayz. Showing the artist performing on stage. This adds realism to our documentary. We also used another actuality footage where the group were performing for a music video in the borough of Abbey wood

Text was used during the interview. Which includes the artists name and what they do. This is a important form, because it gives the audience further information of who they're watching telling them what their role in Rough Royalty and also makes the characters more easier to remember.
Interviews are a very common convention. This allows our cast to speak directly to the audience, telling them about themselves and experiences. Interviews help to give our documentary a sense of realism. The interviewee also look into the eye of the interview while giving there thoughts on the subject. This helped to create more emotion as they speak.
In our interview it was set up in a room using a white screen background and bright lightning and the camera remains static to make it look more professional and so it doesn’t distract the audience from what`s being said, makes it easier to see the cast and offers a clean space to place in the text.
We also used cutaways during the interview to illustrate what the casts are talking about e.g. Dans (public relations) interview.
We used Narrative montage for the introduction by showing different cuts of what's going to take place in the documentary. There were numerous shots of the group in different settings and time within the documentary. Montages in documentaries usually link to what the narrator or different people in the documentary says. However we used this technique but also challenged it by using montage to show iconography images and things that’s going on in the series.
Another convention that was used is colour bars and “beep” sound to add emphasis during the interview of Kaysan. The Colour bars were added during post production, where we censored some of the language used and redid the interview. Colour bars are usually used for behind the scenes and for some music documentaries.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

2. Ancillary Texts
• Ancillary texts are extremely important in the process of
creating a film. They can effect means of advertisement
and promotion for you media product. Although there are
many mediums of promotion for a film, we completed a
poster and a radio trailer. This covered the promotion of
both visual and auditory elements of our film. Creating
the ancillary texts would be particularly easy. We relied on
the treatment we created, even though this did change
slightly through-out the production. We were all clear
about the genre, so the overall tone and message of our
film was clear. In our main production, we were trying to
create a tone of suspense and surprise to the audience.
Also, we intended to even make them question their own
morals. Therefore, we had to consider this when creating
our ancillary texts.
3. Creating the Radio Trailer
• Radio trailer is one of the oldest forms of
entertainment as is still relevant today. As of 2012,
there are an estimated 700 radio stations in the UK
alone. A numerous amount of there are owned by the
BBC who do not advertise as they are funded mainly
by what people pay for their TV licenses. Radio
trailers are another effective way of marketing and
promotion a media product. Radio trailers only
involve the auditory elements of a film, so the idea
would be to attempt to use all the sound clips and
audio that would give enough information about a
film to attract an audience, without giving too much
away and enticing an audience to want to watch that
film. Although these aren’t a commonly known
medium of advertising, it is still particularly effective
as it can target different environment’s such as being
in a car, at home or even in and office at work.
4. • I decided that the best way to try and hear a radio trailer, would simply be to listen
to the radio when doing everyday tasks and hope to hear a few during the day. I
decided not to listen to any BBC radio stations as they don’t advertise so I wouldn’t
hear any anyway. After listening for a while I managed to hear a few trailers for
particularly action/thriller films and eventually I began to identify the conventions
of radio trailers. I learnt that overall they tend to have quotes in from the film,
sounds/effects and music. They also had voiceovers that would usually say the
name of the film and its release date and its ratings. With this knowledge I began
to mindmap and plan ideas for our radio trailer. My idea was that it would be
particularly effective if Lola started the trailer of with a rhetorical question, instead
of having the narrator speaking straight away. Because by doing this I thought that
the audience could have a link and identify the character in the film. We also used
the same music from our film to set an emotional atmosphere for people which
allows people to connect with Lola. To make our trailer sound more professional we
also include important facts such as its nominations, the author and its release
date.

5. • I looked at posters of the same genre and decided to look
at features that they commonly included. I wanted to
have a base for my initial idea so I took into account
things such as the type of font, commonly used colours
and subconscious images. If I could find basic
conventions that are used I would be able to create a
sufficient base for my initial poster idea. Posters are a
particularly effective form of promotion as they increase
the form of presentations. They can also be shown in
many places such as buses, town centres, cinemas,
galleries, online etc. the broadness of where you can post
them can conclude in enticing a larger audience. This is
because posters aren’t just in places for a certain target
audience, by putting them out in every day places such as
cinemas or a bus stop it allows people to tell one another
about it so it generally builds an attraction and an
audience. I believe that because of the genre of our film
and the age certificate we can pull more attraction so
therefore we can put more posters.
Creating the poster
6. • After submitting our brief sketches of our ideal
poster, my group members agreed that my
poster design looked the best so I did another
sketch but this time with some extra details
which I included from similar posters that I
had previously analysed. I then began to work
on photoshop to edit the image itself, I wanted
to create a simple poster with a lot of
emotion/meaning so that it could easily reflect
our genre and advertise our main actor. I then
used a different photoshop to complete all the
texts on the poster. I created a few posters so
that my group members can decide which one
they wanted to use for the final one.
7. Poster Analysis
• Steel tongs fonts was used
like any other conventional poster
for practically any genre of the
film.
• As a tagline, we used the
name of the author as way of
creating more fan base from the
author’s original films/stories.
• For the main title I wanted
to keep the font the same from
the title sequence to show
consistency of the name. I wanted
to have it big and on the bottom
of the poster so that the focus can
straightaway go on to the face
then to the name then to the
release date, which I did in red
colour to catch attention from
rest of the dull colours on the
poster
8. Similarities to other Drama Posters
• Dark and contrasting
colours to create a mysterious and
empathetic towards the character.
• The title stands out against
the image behind it so it still
catches the audience’s eye which is
really important.
• Steel tongs font in typically
used in most film posters to create
a professional layout.
• Actor’s names on top allows
the fans of these actors to want to
watch the film even more creating
a larger audience base.
9. Conclusion
• I feel that overall the ancillary texts that we created were effective in
promoting our film. I feel that they represented and complimented the
ideas that we were trying to portray and identified the atmosphere and
thoughts behind the film. As a whole all of the products that we
created presented how dedicated we were to this film and shows the
different ways in which we can represent our creativity and ideas. They
give the right information out about the film to entice an audience, but
without giving too much away at the same time.
