Layout
• The group said that they liked the contents page from Kerrang most
because they liked the way it had all the stories down one side but the
images were also numbered and used to identify where a story can be
found.
• Pages with lots of images and things going on is preferred. This was
because they thought the cluttered layout is more suited for the rock and
alternative genre. Although, the geometric layout was favourable and
square images were said to work the best.
Mise en scene
• Live performance photography and images taken at concerts were
said to be the best as it is representative of the genre as it looks a
little chaotic and the group thought that the demographic would
prefer images with this style as it is relatable for the population
that will read the magazine because they will most likely have
experienced rock music concerts. They also said that photos like
this are more unique and not used regularly and so it would be a
good way to identify a brand identity.
Typography
• Sans serif fonts were preferred because serif fonts were said to be too sophisticated
and associated with formal documents and therefore not appropriate for the rock
genre and music magazines are not popular for their sophistication and formality.
Language
• Colloquial language is thought to be more appealing.
• Additionally, short descriptions under the article title is said thought
to work the best because you don’t want to have to read a lot before
actually reading the article. A brief straight to the point phrase (not
even full sentences) is more useful and appropriate.
• However, they thought that the main point on the contents
page should be about the cover story because you buy the
magazine for whatever is on the cover and should therefore be
highlighted.
