Stereotypes In The Fashion Industry
The media portrayed unrealistic images of models that send a harmful message to young women. It
s reflecting on our society by inspiring young teens to achieve this look; as a result, the use of
dangerous behaviours and extreme weight loss. Therefore, females are dominating the media and
influencing young womanin the wrong areas. Therefore, The Fashion Industry is influencing young
teens to compare themselves to other women. Young teens are becoming more interested in
becoming like someone they admire rather than, become their best version of themselves. (Body
size, Measurements, Meal Plans) The fashion industry is prompting extreme thinness and it s
confirmed in studies that unhealthy weight control is a severe issue in the Fashion Industry. (use of
laxatives, Drugs, Extreme exercise, and Starvation) There are steps that can be taken to decrease the
expectations of models. Data shows that the American... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persian Empire Research Paper
The ancient world was a time of great civilisations and greater rulers, and today it is those of
Greece and Rome that are remembered. But they were not alone in their military conquests and
vast empires; there were many equal to, or perhaps even greater, than them, and it is important not
to overlook the achievements of these peoples who have helped to shape history. The Persian
Empire is one such of these civilisations, rising to prominence in the mid sixth century BCE and
enduring for two hundred years, a small amount of time in which it conquered an impressive
amount of territory. At its height, it controlled a huge swathe of land centred in modern day Iran,
stretching as far north as the Russian border, as far south as Egypt, and as far... Show more content

The efficiency of the Persian Empire s rule over a large area inhabited by people of various
different cultures and traditions was one of its most significant achievements. To maintain order,
the empire was split into approximately twenty areas known as satrapies, each ruled by a satrap,
generally a local of the area. This governmental system enabled large scale taxation to take place, as
each satrap collected money from his area and sent it back to the emperor, something which would
have been near impossible without these regional leaders; collection of tax provided a constant flow
of money to fund the Persian Empire and its operations. Persia also maintained cohesion in its
empire through implementation of a common language for use in all government documents, the
development of standardised weights and official coinage, and the introduction of a single set of
laws to govern the empire in its entirety. Perhaps the most notable achievement of the Persians was
the Royal Road, a highway built by Darius I that allowed prompt communication and intelligence
gathering, and stretched approximately three thousand kilometres across the Persian Empire. With
fresh messengers and horses waiting at stations along this road, a message could be delivered in
seven days where it might formerly have taken three months. The organisation of the Empire meant
that it remained unified and connected with the

Issues And Objectives Of The Commercial Bank Of Ontario
Issues Objectives is as follows:
As Jackie Patrick, loans officer for the Commercial Bank of Ontario, the key issue is whether or
not I will accept or reject Mackay s request for a bank loan and line of credit. My key objective is
to develop a thorough understanding of the facts presented in the case in order to make an
informed decision that will best serve the interest of the Commercial Bank of Ontario, myself as
the newly appointed loans officer, and of course my client Mr. Mackay.
As Mackay, the key issue(s) is, how will he continue to operate and pay off his outstanding debts in
addition to, what will happen to Lawsons should the loan and line of credit not be approved? If
approved how will he ensure (what plans are in place) that he will make good on his payments,
both to the bank and FWL.
As Mackay, the key objective(s) entail, securing a $194,000 bank loan in conjunction with a
$26,000 line of credit in efforts to reduce his trade debt and service his tight months of cash
shortage (Lawsons, 2013, p. 311) in order to avoid filing for bankruptcy and foreclose his business.

Health And Safety At The Workplace
Health and Safety in the Workplace The health and safety in the workplace for workers has created
a continual concern in the United States since the country was discovered. Although, a healthy and
safe work environment can be described as a work area free of health risks and absent unsafe
conditions. Indeed, the definition encompasses additional legal, moral, ethical issues. Particularly,
reporting safety issues rather than choosing to ignore them, refusing to fall under peer pressure or
fear of retaliation, not accepting bribes and making the conscious decision to report violators of the
rules. Initially, certain accidents and injuries within industries were accepted and considered a
consequence of the job, eventually workers became less accepting of inadequate working
conditions began demanding safer work environments. Therefore, numerous labor unions and
organizations formed throughout the history of the United States intended to resolve and mediate
issues between employees and employers, including the health and safety of the workers in the
workplace. Nevertheless, in an effort to avoid confusion on the accountability of employee health
and safety in the workplace the author of this paper has examined the separate entities of OSHA,
employers and employees. Although, a minute majority of workers believe that OSHA exclusively
is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of workers in the workplace; the alternative belief
is that it is the individual responsibility of

Amusing Ourselves To Death Essay
Question Two:
While having read many different authors this semester for this class, two seemed to jump out at
me in having the most in common. Neil Postman(1985) does not specifically discuss the societal
pressures of forced gender roles in advertising the same way the Jean Kilbourne addresses in her
book and film series, but there is a connection in the topics they discuss. I was a bit put off by the
task of reading the entire Postman book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, however, the topics in each
chapter make for some thought provoking and tantalizing ideas of the societal issues that we seem
to take for granted. The chapter about public discourse and the new methods that were employed to
create communication through the age of exposition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two authors do not necessarily have much in common on the surface but just below when
one can ascertain the message being put out by each author it is clearly connected in the form of
technology, its historical and current uses and how the advent of easy communication technology
has allowed us to water down our vast culture by making it easy to objectify humans, animals and
nature if the explanation is sensational enough. I ve learned through reading Neil Postman s
book(1985), Amusing Ourselves to Death, that we seem to look at forms of communication as
following a linear path. The invention of easy communication created a niche in societies that
became a place for further discourse, sharing of ideas and knowledge, but in the end, was used
ultimately to control, shape and form the masses. Neil Postman delved into topics that I think are
somewhat forgotten by history and societies as they become so engrained in our way of viewing
the world around us. Jean Kilbourne (1999) taught me that we are all subjected to societal gender
normalization through mass media, print media and news programs. The sheer lack of honest and
open communication in our society puts us at risk for being objectified, sexualized and
demoralized, all without realizing that this is

Essay On Broken Windows Theory
Introduction to the original Broken Windows Article Broken Windows theory was created by
George L. Kelling and James Q. Wilson in March 1982. Their article was based around the idea
that if small crimes were not punished, they would eventually lead into larger crimes.
The name of the article comes from the idea that is a broken window is not replaced as soon as it
is broken, then it is a sign that no one cares. And, as soon as no one cares, then larger more serious
crimes are permitted.
Throughout the article many different examples are used to support the idea that Broken Windows
Theory Policing is an effective way to fight crime. The primary example of this is in New York
City, when the then mayor of New York City took on Bratton as the new policechief. He then went
on to bring in Broken Windows policing. Almost immediately crime rates began to fall. However,
many people disagree about the true reason the crime rates fell.
A War Against Minorities Some that disagree with Broken Windows Theory claim it is not
actually a crime fighting strategy, but rather it was a under the radar call for the police to crack
down on minorities in the USA. Daniel Brook makes the claim that physical decay in
neighborhoods is not the most telling sign that a neighborhood is in decay, but rater that it is
racially determined. the actual level of physical disorder the number of boarded up buildings, for
example wasn t the most important factor in making people think their

Influence Of Greek Folk Song
Greece sits at the crossroad between the Eastern and Western cultures of Asia and Europe. Being at
this critical junction, Greece has experienced the ebb and flow of two cultural currents which
subjected and allowed her to assimilate creatively diverse influences. Once Constantinople fell in
1453, completing the collapse of the Byzantine empire, there followed four hundred years of slavery
which greatly hindered the natural development of Hellenism and restricted its spiritual evolution.
This period was particularly harsh and had an inhibitive influence on Greek music. From the twelfth
or thirteenth century forward, an economically exhausted Byzantium was slowly collapsing due to
years of factional rebellion, religious disputes, western crusades and eastern invasions. While the
new technique of polyphony was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As early as the first century A.D., ancient Greek tragedy, which at its peak of harmonious unity,
incorporated poetry, music and dance, had disintegrated into its component elements.
Actor tragedians continued to perform only certain parts of the dialogue of the tragedies, while
others with good voices sang the vocal parts. There also arose a gesticulator whose purpose was to
illustrate, with pantomimic gestures, what the actor tragedian was singing. This gradually
transformed the old Attic style of tragedy and comedy into the tragic pantomime style of the
imperial Byzantine years that included dance, mime, recitation and song. The reactions of the
Church Fathers and the stream of condemnatory decisions and excommunications issued by
ecumenical synods indicate the popularity of these spectacle concerts in multi ethnic Byzantium
and the influence of the mime performances on the austere moral code of the Christians for many
centuries to

Politics Of The Polarized Classroom Essay
Politics of the Polarized Classroom A Popular Trope By now, one must have already heard or
read about the story of a young man standing up to his professor in philosophy class, the latter
being a self professed atheist. Simply put, the professor claimed that it was stupid to believe in
God because there was no empirical proof of God. The young man, however, wittily retorts that
since the class really had no empirical proof of the professor s brain, then they really had no
business believing him. The same trope is basically used in a more elaborated rendition in the
recent Christian film God s Not Dead (2014). There, an atheist professor challenges a Christian
student for his irrational beliefs, but suddenly comes to terms with the irrationality of his own
belief system by the end of the movie (Noble). An average movie at best, it can be said that
richer meaning might be found in the circumstances of its creation. Movies, after all, mimic
aspects of reality regardless of genre, so that the political realities described therein are hardly
fictional in nature. Simply put, to create a film is to participate politically (Christensen and Haas
6). Here, it is profitable to point out the three things both texts have in common: (1) both feature an
atheistic professor; (2) both feature a Christian student who avidly believes God; and (3) both occur
in the classroom. These factors are important to note, and the third point needs stressing, as it is
central to the plot of both texts.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Literary Analysis
Author Information: Maya Angelou, both the writer and protagonist of I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings, spent the majority of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas in the wake of her parent s
divorce at the age of three. She, along with her older brother, lived with their grandmother
(Annie Henderson), whom they call Momma, at the only black store in the segregated town of
Stamps. Annie later became a big influence in her life and helped her develop self confidence
and pride. Growing up, Maya had to deal with her insecurities over her looks and the rejection
and abandonment of her biological parents. Southern racism is also a concern and appears
throughout her life in the form of humiliation and lynch mobs. From Momma s store, Maya
watches the pitiful cotton pickers as they travel to and from work every day. At the age of eight,
Maya s father (Annie s son) unexpectedly shows up to take her and her brother Bailey to live with
Vivian, their mother, in St. Louis, Missouri. Vivian makes a living off of gambling parlours. One

students that they are expected to become only athletes or servants. When Maya gets a tooth

hers. An example of indirect racism would be when Bailey encounters the body of a dead, rotting

concerned and fears for her children s safety. She saves up money to take them to Vivian, who now

in observing and analyzing people is disrupted by her. His description of the girls goes on for
about a quarter of the story. He is starstruck by the girls. Stokesie and him turn into pigs by the
girl. They say Oh Daddy. Stokesie said beside me. I feel so faint. Darling, I said. Hold me tight.

and talks about the uniform. He is aware that he is a part of the corporate structure and just one of
the pawns. When he quits he not only does it for the girls, but he does it for

This occurs when the red blood cells of a person with the disease has an abnormal form of
hemoglobin called Hb S. Instead of the biconcave disk shape, the red blood cells are long, stiff,
rod like structures, making it easier for the cell to rupture. The cells also have difficulty moving
through blood vessels and can cause clots (Tortora and Derrickson, 2014). As of now, the only
cure for sickle cell anemia is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, though there are various
treatments that can ease the symptoms and prolong life (CDC, Jan 2016). Sickle cell anemia is
very dangerous to have as the patient would experience blood loss and require blood
transfusions, and they would also be exposed to infection (CDC, June 2016). The disease is
inherited and is most commonly found in populations with ancestors from sub Saharan Africa,
Spanish speaking regions, Saudi Arabia, India, and Mediterranean countries. In the United
States, about 1 in 365 African American births have sickle cell disease (CDC, Feb 2016). In
areas where malaria is prevalent, there is selective pressure for sickle cell trait (individuals who

multiple mechanisms for how the sickle cell gene can block malarial infection (Gong et al.,

In a sickle cell trait red blood cell, the cell would become sickled due to oxygen consumption from

Piano Music Research Paper
The Healing Power of Piano Music
Music is a powerful universal language that can unite people and heal broken hearts. Research
on the healing power of music in the fields of medical health and clinical psychology date back
many years. Several clinical studies have shown that music therapy has an ingrained ability to
cause spiritual, physical and emotional healing. Although the real science behind the power of
music to heal is yet to be fully documented, many people appreciate the fact that music can soothe
the soul and bring joy, something that is beneficial to the body. Happiness in itself cannot be
prescribed as a cure for illnesses, but it creates a perfect ground for positive coping. Because a
happy heart and mind can easily overcome an ailment by creating a perfect fighting and survival
mechanism.
This is all easy to decipher because feeling unhappy, sad or self absorbed can cause both mental
and physical anguish. Music therapy has been shown to have a positive impact in children,
adolescents, adults and elderly people suffering from various conditions. Research conducted in

kind of music would seem like a good candidate for soothing music compared to heavy metal or

The Structure Of Dn Cooperation And Competition
The Structure of DNA: Cooperation and Competition
PRACTICAL PROBLEM:
The question How do living things pass on their traits to offspring had long been on the minds of
researchers.
CURIOSITY:
Curiosity was a trait of all those who wondered about that question. Gregor Mendel was just one of
those people leading up to the four who discovered the structure of DNA.
The four people who discovered the structure of DNA built upon the EXPLORATION AND
DISCOVERY of others:
At the time of this discovery, the groundwork in DNA research had been prepared, beginning with
the work of Gregor Mendel in the 19th century.
NEW TECHNOLOGY:
Later, in the decades of the 1940 s and 50 s, the understanding of DNA grew because of new
technology.
DISCOVERY:
It was learned that DNA is made of phosphates, sugars, four bases and discovering that those bases
are stacked .34 nanometers apart and that the DNA bases always occur in the same A=T, C=G ratios.
PERSONAL MOTIVATION:
Part of the motivation for those who discovered the structure of DNA is that there were other
individuals and groups interested in answering the same questions about the way life works. It may
have added a little pressure and excitement to the process.

Motivation Students With Learning Disabilities
Motivation in Students with Learning Disabilities
Rizka Puspitarani (3490616)
What is Learning Disability?
Learning disabilities (LD), or in some clinical cases called specific learning disorder, is a
neurodevelopmental disorder which the individual is experiencing difficulties in learning and using
academic skills (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Person with LD usually shows at least
one difficulty in literacy (i.e.: inaccurate or slow and takes effort to read, difficult to understand the
meaning of what he/she reads, difficult to spell words, or difficult with written expression) or in
numerical reasoning (i.e.: number sense, calculation, or mathematical reasoning). Dyslexia and
dyscalculia are the examples of specific cases in LD. The prevalence of school age children with
LD is 5% 15% of the population across different language and cultures with males have higher risk
than females (2:1 to 3:1); while the prevalence of adults with LD is approximately 4%. The
prognostic factors of LD might because of genetic factors or environmental factors (i.e.: premature,
low birth weight, or nicotine exposure during prenatal).
How is motivation in students with LD?
Number of studies had examined motivation in students with LD. The results show that motivation
score is lower in children with LD (Grolnick Ryan, 1990; Lincoln Chazan, 1979). In Grolnick and
Ryan study (1990), both teacher and students themselves reported significantly less autonomous
and less motivated than

Catcher In The Rye Banned
Despite being considered a phenomenon by countless individuals, The Catcher in the Rye written
by J.D. Salinger has been argued to be the biggest controversial novel during the 1950 s. The book
has many reasons to banned such as the vulgar language or intense underage drinking along with
more. While most of the world chooses to have this book be banned, I believe that The Catcher in
the Rye doesn t deserve to have the banned reputation that most identify it with.
Salinger writes holden as a rebellious independent teenager which reflects the mood at the time
(this being the 1950 s). Because of this, Salinger s diction throughout Holden s story needs to be
vulgar and controversial to depict a teen during the 50 s. A case of this type of teen... Show more

Some say Catcher in the Rye has rightfully owed the spot of being banned. However, many have
stated that the reasons of the novel being banned are weak and ignorant. One critic named P. J.
Corbett defends the novel by arguing its language is no huge deal. Corbett states Considered in
isolation, the language is crude and profane. It would be difficult to argue, however, that such
language is unfamiliar to our young people or that it is rougher than the language they are
accustomed to hear in the streets among their acquaintances (Raise High the Barriers, Censors
Corbett). Corbett uses a very well expressed argument that despite the vulgar language involved
within the book, it is not like one will go unexposed to this type of language in their lifetime.
Especially since the book s intended audience is teens who are more than familiar with the
language. Similarly, Corbett also argues in the same article, One shouldn t have to remind readers
of what Cardinal Newman once said, that we cannot have a sinless literature about a sinful people
(Raise High the Barriers, Censors Corbett). Corbett continues to argue with using the idea of
censorships pretending that our world has no wrong in it. The idea of excluding something in
order to prevent people from reading it shows that people or so focused on removing things

Psychoanalytical Theory Essays
Psychoanalytical Theory Sigmund Freud (1856 1939) was the first person to initiate the thought of
psychoanalysis. According to Friedlander (1947), classical Freudian psychoanalytic explanations of
delinquency focus on abnormalities or disturbances in the individual s emotional development from
early childhood. Since then many people have amended his original writings and presently there
are numerous versions Freud s original psychoanalytical theory. Many of these recent versions are
similar to the original version with the exception that they are updated to current times. Few new
models are extremely different from Freud s theory. Adler, Mueller, and Laufer (2004) describe the

development and the emotional problems reflecting some unconscious aspects of one s
psychological functioning. Adler, Mueller, and Laufer (2004) base this theory on three principles.
First, The actions and behavior of an adult are understood in terms of childhood development.
Second, Behavior and unconscious motives are intertwined, and their interaction must be
unraveled if we are to understand criminality. Third, Criminality is essentially a representation of
psychological conflict (p. 86). Freud believes that criminality has a lot to do with the structural
model of the mind. He breaks the mind down into three categories; the Id, Ego, and the Superego.
The Id is the unconscious seat of irrational, antisocial, and instinctual impulses which must be
controlled and shaped for social adaptation to life in society (Akers, 1999, p. 50). When newborn
babies are born, they have biological drives that are unaffected by society. The Id can be considered

Dr. Kramer
March 19, 2015
Subject: What should US policy towards military assistance to Taiwan be?
Historical Background: Taiwan, otherwise known as the Republic of China (ROC), has a
complicated political status on the world stage. The People s Republic of China (PRC) lays
territorial claims to Taiwan and most countries recognize China as the mainland as Taiwan as an
autonomous region within it. However, Taiwan sees itself independent as the true government of
China, but only a couple dozen countries recognize it as sovereign government and by technical
definition of what constitutes as a sovereign state under the Montevideo Convention of 1933,
Taiwan fits the criteria.1 Though before 1971, both countries laid ... Show more content on

Both economic and security threats are culminated in a general consensus that weapons trade
between both countries includes only defensive weapons.5 In 1994, the policy towards Taiwan
was reviewed, however no changes were made to the arms sales policy.6 The military assistance
the US provides Taiwan with, despite being defensive in nature, is still a source of consternation to
the PRC and is a problem for its relations with both Taiwan and the US.
Significance:
Military assistance to Taiwan is essential for Taiwan s sense of security, but it is also a source of
friction with US relations with the PRC. Selling Taiwan an amount of weapons that the PRC
considers excessive may lead to increased tensions between both the US and the PRC. Under the
TRA, the US still has a degree of obligation in ensuring Taiwanese security. It deems that if US
assistance is necessary to maintain peace in the Western Pacific and if Taiwan is forced to make a
decision regarding its statehood under non peaceful means the US will intervene in Taiwan s
affairs. Currently, this is limited to selling defensive weapons, but not providing further military
assistance or performing joint drills like those performed in South Korea.
Positive trilateral relations are essential for US economic interests. By maintaining positive

The Effects Of Homeschooling On Children And Public Schools
Introduction: Homeschooling is becoming much more common now than it was years ago. Parents
are now preferring to homeschool their children over public school due to many reasons such as
religion, safety, academic quality travel, family togetherness, separation of government and school,
mastery over grades, expenses, and focusing on learning plans made for the student. Public schools
are institutions, which are funded by tax revenues from the government. Schools have boundaries
to then figure out which students will attend a certain schoolto avoid overcrowding. The schools
curriculum is drawn up by the state and they follow a standardized testing result and other
measurements, which gives the state information of how the school is performing. According to
Isabel Shaw, there are an abundance of pros and cons of deicing to homeschool your children.
Some key points from this article were:
Homeschooling Pros The advantages of homeschooling your children are that as a parent you get

He certainly does not mean anything positive. The following two lines ( What about all the
peace/That you pledge your only son? ) demonstrate that there is no peace; it is a rhetorical
question. Once more, this is differentiated by blossoming fields and dreams, yet in reality is it
shown that it was a vague memory. This is restated in the fourth stanza: I used to dream/I used to
glance beyond the stars. This is once again another metaphorical term: to look past the stars
implies high desire and standards. Be that as it may, it can likewise be taken literally. Jackson
further says that Now I don t know where we are/Although I know drifted far. This references
the disorientation that has occurred and the loss of connection between us and nature. Jackson is
trying to represent that most cities are not able to see true stars as they are hidden by artificial
lights (road lights and so forth.). Continuing on into the song, he clarifies that there must be a
correct way, an answer. This correct way is his hopeful vision of a world without war, bad form,
and mischief, a world in which we treat everything and everybody with respect and care, different
people and also nature. A universe of

Goldilocks Affirmative Defense
Goldilocks has admitted to having committed the act of murder and burglary, however, she asserts
affirmative defenses that would exonerate her actions from criminal liability. Affirmative dense
brings to light danger for the defense because once admitting the act the defendants have the
burden to, start matters off by putting in some evidence in support of their justification or excuse
defenses (Samaha, 2011). In addition, the burden of production will shift to the defense and it is
now the prosecution s job to cause doubt upon the defense s case. In Goldilocks case of a
justification defense this would involve her use of self defense and its necessity being that under
the circumstances, it was the right thing to do (Samaha, 2011). Furthermore,... Show more content

For an attack to be considered self defense it must apply to four requirements. The first is
unprovoked attacks in which the defender has to have not started or provoked the attack. In
Goldilocks case this is held because she was attempting to leave when Prince Charming saw and
forcibly locked her inside. The second requirement is necessity which is, also known as the
choice of evils, reflects popular moral intuitions and common sense: sometimes, breaking the
rules is the right indeed, the only thing to do in order to avoid a greater evil (Bergelson, 2012).
In Goldilocks case this choice of evils was a fact in both acts the burglary where she was given a
choice to either starve to death or break into a home so she can eat. The other instance was the
Prince Charming reaching for his walking stick that he uses to constantly physically abuse her
and the choice to defend herself. The third element of self defense is proportionality which is the
ability of a defender to use deadly force if no deadly force is not enough to repel the oncoming
attack with no excessive force (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case Prince Charming is not only
bigger and stronger than her she was in no state where she could run away or hide she had no
choice. The last requirement is reasonable belief which is the belief that it was necessary to use
deadly force to repel the imminent deadly attack (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case she was in a
position where she was going to have to fight for her life and the only way should would have

Problem Formulation And Scope Of Supply Chain Systems
1.3 Problem Formulation and Scope
To describe and predict the behaviour of complex reverse supply chain systems, it is often necessary
to use elaborate mathematical modelling. In the same manner, identification of the optimum
operating conditions that will ensure improved supply chain performance usually renders the use of
an optimisation technique essential. For the last decade, a variety of modelling research activities
have been carried out to address the complex reverse supply chain optimisation problems. However,
most of the research has focused mainly on operational and tactical planning problems which may
not provide sufficient insight into the long term design and planning issues of reverse supply
chains. Furthermore, a common limitation of most traditional approaches is the lack of
incorporating quantitative environmental performance modelling. In this context, this study will
focus on strategic reverse supply chain management aiming at determining the setup of
economically viable and environmentally friendly reverse supply chain networks.
1.3.1 Research Questions
The aims of this research have been translated into nine research questions which are presented as
follows:
пЃ¬Question 1: What are the general characteristics of reverse supply chains from a logistics point
of view?
In order to design reverse supply chains at a strategic level, we have to identify the common
features of the supply chains. To this end, we will investigate reverse supply chain settings

public of the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies
documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with

Impact of Silent Spring
When excerpts of Silent Spring first began appearing in The New Yorkermagazine in June 1962,
they caused an uproar and brought a howl of indignation from the chemical industry. Supporters of
the pesticide industry argued that her book gave an incomplete picture because it did not say
anything about the benefits of using pesticides. An executive of the American Cyanamid Company
complained, if man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the
Dark Ages, and the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth. Chemical
manufacturers began undertaking a more aggressive public relations campaign to educate the
public on the benefits of pesticide use. Monsanto, for example, published and distributed 5,000
copies of a brochure parodying Silent Spring entitled The Desolate Year, which explained how
chemical pesticides were largely responsible for the virtual eradication of diseases such as malaria,
yellow fever, sleeping sickness, and typhus in the United States and throughout the world, and that
without the assistance of pesticides in agricultural production millions around the world would
suffer from malnutrition or starve to death (NRDC 1997).
One of the main counterarguments to Miss Carson s book expressed by the farmers, scientists, and
other supporters of the pesticide industry was that farm yields would be drastically reduced without

system of proportional representation, gives voters more options in regards to choosing a

French people. In fact, voter turnout was at all time low due to dissatisfaction with the
government. Members of parliament were forced to form coalitions with smaller parties that they
had nothing in common with. It was very easy for the small parties, which were usually poorly
organized, to hold the balance of power because there had to be compromise in order for important
decisions to be made. There was a predominance of the MRP, Socialists and Communists in the
party system. This made it even more difficult for political stability to ensue. In addition to

Patricia Parker s Inescapable Romance Analysis
Review of Patricia Parker s Inescapable Romance Parker, Patricia A. Inescapable Romance:
Studies in the Poetics of a Mode. Princeton University, 2016. x, 290p. Romance is a literary term
that has remained shrouded in a cloak of ambiguity for centuries. Many scholars and critics
believe that this is due to the frequent redefinition of the term by those attempting to use it as a
genre, mode, or style to enhance their work. Due to this obscurity, a study in the poetics of
romance is an extensive task that is frequently avoided but desperately needed. Patricia Parker, a
professor of English and dramatic literature at Stanford University, eagerly accepts this task in
her work Inescapable Romance: Studies in the Poetics of a Mode. Parker sets out to approach
romance by focusing less on its content or material than on its form or design a form, above all,
which simultaneously quests for and postpones a particular end, objective, or object (4). This is
the inescapable quality of romance its tendency to go on and on without regard for resolution. Her
study covers five centuries by exploring the implications of romance in the time and works of four
celebrated romantic poets: Aristo, Spenser, Milton, and Keats (7). Through this exploration of
individual authors and their works, Parker is able to offer suggestions of what, poetically, became
of them, their influence, and their significance within the variations of a recurrent mode. She is

2008). According to Cockroft Cockroft (2005, p.182), repetition is the major resource of schematic
rhetoric and it is the spontaneous expression of emotion. In the speech, Rudd often mentioned the
word Sorry and Future . Repetition is an effective technique that Rudd used during the speech. It is
used successfully to maintain the situation and grabbing the attention of audience. Speaking as a
third person, the word We are sorry that been repeated by Rudd during the speech are not referring
only to the speakers but also to the nation.
On my point of view, I agree on how Rudd has taken the right choice and I was also fascinated by
his courage to apologize to the public for the better future of his citizens. However, I did search

History Of The Pulp Docks Beach
The Pulp Docks Beach has been an important part of the Waddington community for over a
hundred years. It is a well loved family friendly place. I have been going there almost every day
of every summer since I was born. Unfortunately, today I discovered the inappropriate abuse of
this environment. The Pulp Docks has a long important history to the town of Waddington. Before
the SeaWay, it was an industrial area containing factories, a railroad station, and a shipping port.
St Lawrence County s first paper mill was built there in 1828 and lasted about twenty years. Once
the Seaway was built many pre existing historic locations were either destroyed or relocated and
the location transitioned into a beach to became a popular place for

Effects of the Asian Financial Crisis on 1997
The financial crisis in many countries in Asia in 1997 1998 was an unexpected event. It was
mainly because most of the Asian countries had been enjoying economic growth prior to the crisis.
The crisis itself started with the devaluation of Thailand s Baht in July 1997. The Thailand
government decided to float its currency in order to defend the Baht against speculative attack,
despite its fixed exchange rate system. This decision was apparently the beginning of the economic
downturn of many Asian countries, such as Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, and
Indonesia. Before the crisis, Indonesia s economy was growing rapidly; having a low inflationand a
well maintained current account deficit. However, Indonesia surprisingly became the country that
was affected the most by the crisis. This paper aims to examine the effects of the Asian financial
crisisin 1997 1998 to Indonesian economy and how it could happen.
After Thailand floated the baht in 1997, Indonesia s monetary widened its currency trading band.
It changed the exchange rate regime from floating exchange rate to free floating exchange rate,
causing the Rupiah and the stock market to decline. Before the crisis, the exchange rate between
the rupiah and the US dollar was approximately 2,600 Rupiah/USD. The rupiah started to
depreciate to 4,000 Rupiah/USD, and dropped dramatically to over 11,000 Rupiah/USD on
January 1998. The spot rates were over 14,000 in January 1998 and trading again over 14,000

The Moon Landing Conspiracy Theory
Conspiracy theories are everywhere. It seems that for every event in to have taken place in
history, there is a group of individuals saying that it is a government conspiracy. There are
conspiracy theories regarding the 9/11 attacks, presidential assassinations, Area 51, Jimmy
Hoffa, the English crown and Elvis. The list is endless. In this paper we are going to discuss the
moon landing conspiracy. Apparently there are people who believe the entire moon landing was
a hoax. They believe that we did not actually land on the moon, but produced the event in a
movie studio so that we would be able to beat Russia in the great Space Race . These people have
taken all the evidence from the moon landing and analyzed ever aspect and tried to... Show more

Conspiracy theorists have also argued that there should have been a freshly gouged crater where
the lunar module s descent engine blasted into the lunar soil. However Bizony rebuffs this myth
by explaining that the powdery lunar soil was disturbed by the downward pointing jet of the
exhaust, but the thrust was not enough to create a crater in the topsoil, much less even be able
to penetrate the hard rocky substrate (Bizony, It was all a fake, right?, 2009). The website,
moonlandinghoax.org explains that the lunar module had six foot long landing probes under the
foot pads and when they registered contact the engines would stop firing and the module would
fall gently the rest of the way (Moon landing hoax). Since the engines stopped firing
approximately six feet before landing, there was not enough blast pressure to create a crater. The
article stated that a firecracker would have more power than the engines did after they ceased to
fire (Moon landing hoax). The conspiracy theorists have even gone as far to say that NASA even
murdered astronauts in order to help keep this monumental hoax a secret. One of these instances
included the accidental deaths of three astronauts; Ed White, Roger Chaffee, and Guss Grissom;
that died in a fire while testing an Apollo spacecraft (Moon landing hoax). After the fire,
investigations went on and it was determined that the fire was attributed to a wide range of lethal
design and construction flaws in the

How Graffiti Has Changed Over Time
Guillermo Corte
Professor Peppard
English 110 86
04 May 2015How Graffiti has Changed over Time. Graffiti is the act of inscribing or drawing on
walls for the purpose of communicating a message to the general public. The term comes from the
Greek term Graphein, which means to write. Graffiti has been around since men first started
drawing pictures in caves. However, the focus of this paper is not on pre historic or amateur
graffiti, but on the modern hip hop graffiti movement that began in the late 1960 s. The graffiti
has two versions: a legal aspect, in which artists are able to spray paintings and murals of great
spectacle and technical. The illegal side, is where they express their painting in public spaces
such as schools, metros, trains, posters, and wall Streets, etc. Graffiti are a poor choice for
people who practiced this objective because it deny people in follow good roads which is seen a
bad self expression and they also may be expensive, putting pressure on low income families.
Controversial, secrecy, and taboo are some points that connect with graffiti argument where graffiti
has changed over the years.
The difference between art and vandalism is the vandal do not respect for another individual
properties. However, society still discriminates against very talented men and women who put their
talents to the public. These are considered as vandals because they damage private property and

Comparison Of Waiting For Icarus And MusпїЅe Des Beaux Arts
The two poems Waiting for Icarus and MusГ©e des Beaux Arts are narrative poems. MusГ©e
des Beaux Arts is a poem written by W. H. Auden and published in 1938. Waiting for Icarus is a
poem written by Muriel Rukeyser and published in 1973. The poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is
about how no one truly cares when a tragedy is taking place, unless said tragedy concerns them
directly. The poem Waiting for Icarus tells the story about a woman who is reminiscing being
abandoned by her lover while waiting for him at the beach. The two poems have a great deal of
similarities and differences between them. Despite the fact that MusГ©e des Beaux Arts uses an
indifferent tone and irregular rhyme scheme and Waiting for Icarus uses a melancholic tone and no
discernible rhyme scheme, both poems use the themes of abandonment and suffering and the myth
of Icarus in order to convey to their readers how people deal with pain and misery.
Auden touches upon many topics in his poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts. The Encyclopedia of
American Poetry: The Twentieth Century writes that, the poem condemns people s habitual
inattention to the miseries of others (Mao). In other words, one of the primary focuses in
MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is that of apathy. Auden begins his poem by writing, About suffering
they were never wrong, / The old Masters: how well they understood / Its human position: how it
takes place (lns. 1 3). Here, Auden is setting up another one of the poem s main topics, which is
human suffering. Auden is writing about how the old Masters knew how to capture the image
of human suffering within the confines of their canvases (ln. 2). Auden then writes, While
someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; / How, when the aged
are reverently, passionately waiting / For the miraculous birth (lns. 4 6). In these lines Auden is
telling his readers that ordinary life will always go on by stating that the old patiently await the
arrival of newborn babies, which is a reference to the circle of life. He continues this idea in the
next few lines when he writes, there always must be / Children who did not specially want it to
happen, skating / On a pond at the edge of the wood (lns. 6 8). In lines 6, 7,

Post Modern Er Carson Mccullers
American literature does not only include characters, plots, settings, and themes, but also
historical and personal events that shape the writer s literature. One era that is known for outside
events influencing the writing of the time is the post modern era. The start of the post modern era
took place in the year 1945. This era took rise after two major historical events in America s
history, the Holocaust and the dropping of the atomic bombs on two Japanese cities. Once World
War II was over, Americans wanted to return to normal life. However, with the desire to return to
normal, Americans in the 1950 s had a hard time determining what they would consider normal.
One early post modern author, Carson McCullers, focused her writing on the feeling of isolation
and loneliness that American citizens were facing at the time. Carson McCullers s novels and
short stories contain themes of isolation, death, hope, and dark humor, which are all symbolic of
the hardships humans faced in the post modern time period and her own personal trials. Works of
literature from the post modern era contain similar characteristics. Post modern authors usually
include irony, dark humor, bisexuality, hope, isolation, and historical events in their writing. The
end of World War II played a major role in the desire for America to return to normal. Like all
other wars, there were thousands of people killed, but World War II was the deadliest military
conflict in history. Germany, one of the world s

facilities, or also known as residential treatment centers. The main criteria outlined is a
diagnosis of an mental illness or emotional disturbance by a psychiatrist or psychologist, which

aspects, there are a few issues with NDCC 25.03.2 06 that both policy makers and social workers
working in PRTFs should be aware of. This paper will analysis the policy in further depth to

Do the Goals of the Policy Contribute to Greater Social Equality? By defining admission criteria,
NDCC 25.03.2 06 gives a place for society s most troubled youth a place to stay without placing
them in an inappropriate level of care. However, families without insurance cannot send their
children to these programs, which would leave the some youth without the help that they need.
They may have to enter the child welfare or juvenile delinquency system before their issues are
addressed by a PRTF, as then they would qualify for Medical Assistance through the government
(B. Novotny, personal communication, October 26, 2017) . Unfortunately, further damage and
trauma may have been done just by being in those alternate systems. However, PRTF do offer a
place for some youth to receive treatment before more drastic measures may be taken and gives
them a chance at a more normal life. Do the Goals of the Policy Positively Affect the Redistribution
of Income, Resources, Rights Entitlements, Rewards, Opportunities, and Status? NDCC 25.03.2 06
doesn t offer entitlements, rewards, or income. However, it does offer many opportunities and the
possibility of an increase of status for youth admitted into the PRTF. Youth that meet the criteria set
forth in the admission criteria may receive many programs. For example at Ruth Meiers in Grand

Nurse Ratched Character Analysis
Individuals are being emasculated and mistreated by woman throughout their journey. Emasculation
is intertwined with societal expectation throughout the novel such as when men arrive at the ward.
Why then, I ll just explain it to you. McMurphy raises his voice; though he doesn t look at the
other Acutes listening behind him, it s them he s talking to. The flock gets sight of a spot of blood
on some chicken and they all go to peckin at it, see... (Kesey 51). In this quote, McMurphy
distinguishes the key factors and clues that the nurse is controlling the men in their institution by
forcing them to turn upon each other. She services them to reveal things that shame them to one
another. Nurse Ratched is using the men s secrets to turn them against each other, showing she is
mistreating the men and this action really strips the men on their masculine rights. Many of the
men got threatening by Nurse Ratched, and some where more extreme than others, leading to
terrible outcomes. Billy and the girl had climbed around to the bow and were talking and looking
down in the water (Kesey 213) . Billy Ribbit feels emasculated because of Nurse Ratched is
threatening him into telling his mother about the situation with Candy. Billy had never been with a
woman until he had sex with Candy, a prostitute. Billy s mom seems to have a strong hold on him,
and has a powerful look upon him. The Nurse uses this against Billy, a he thinks deeply considers

History of the Holy Quran
HISTORY OF THE HOLY QURAN
The Quran is the backbone of Islam. On this Sacred Book of Allaah depends the Islamic call,
state, society and the civilisation of the Muslim world. It is the last Divine revelation, which was
sent down to Prophet Muhammad , the last and final of all Prophets, may Allaah exalt their
mention. His task was to convey the message of worshipping the One God, Allaah, without
ascribing any partners to Him. The Noble Quran, which is the source of guidance and mercy to
mankind, is divided into one hundred and fourteen (114) Soorahs (chapters) of varying lengths.
Ninety three chapters were revealed in Makkah, while the remaining twenty one were revealed in
Madeenah.
The first revelation that the Prophet received was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, Makkan revelations made the Muslims faith in Allaah firmly established. On the other hand,
Madeenan revelations were meant to translate the faith into action and give details of the Divine
Law.
Allaah will forever preserve the Quran against all attempts to destroy or corrupt it. Being guarded
by Allaah, it will always remain pure. There does not exist a single copy with any variation from
the recognised text.
Any attempt of alteration has resulted in failure.
Upon the command of the Prophet his Companions would write down what was revealed of the
Noble Quran. They used, for this purpose, palm branches stripped of leaves, parchments, shoulder
bones, stone tablets, etc. About forty people were involved in this task. Among them was Zayd Ibn
Thaabit who showed his work to the Prophet . Thus, the Quran was correctly arranged during the
Prophet s life, but it was not yet compiled into one book. In the meantime, most of the Prophet s
Companions memorised the Quran.
When Abu Bakr became Caliph after the Prophet died, a large number of the Companions were
killed during the War of Apostasy. Umar Ibn Al Khattaab went to the Caliph and discussed the
idea of compiling the Quran into one volume. He was disturbed, as most of those who memorised
it had died. Then, Abu Bakr called for Zayd and commissioned him to collect the Quran into one
book, which became known as the Mus haf.
After Zayd accomplished this great task and

hardly improved in the free recall test after the age of 10, compared to the US children. They
only remembered two items after 15 trials. In other hand, the schooled Kpelle children performed
the same as the US schooled children. The non schooled Kpelle children performed well when the

Buddhism And Its Impact On Western Asia
Buddhism is one of the largest religions in the world with an estimated 500 million adherents
located in all corners of the globe. Although Buddhism is practiced all around the world, the
majority of Buddhists are centered in the Eastern, Southern and Central parts of Asia. It was
founded in India in approximately 525 B.C. by Siddhartha Gautama. Although it was founded and
first gained a foothold in India, Buddhismtoday is usually more associated with East Asian countries
such as Korea and Japan.
Given the diversity of the peoples of East Asia and their political systems, culture and language
one might wonder what led to the expansion of Buddhism over such a large geographical area.

Release from this cycle is only achieved by attaining enlightenment, the ultimate goal for
Buddhists. A Buddha is an all knowing being who has reached that perfect state of transcendence
in which the concepts of humanities greed, hate and delusion are exterminated. Another key aspect
is that upon passing into nirvana, one is never subject to rebirth again. According to tradition, the
founder of Buddhism was born in 563 B.C.E. Siddhartha left his palace, renouncing his wealth and
status, to find the cause of suffering. After years of searching, he found his answer and went on to
teach others. When he died, he attained nirvana, the release from earthly desires and suffering, and
became the Buddha. The Buddha s teachings were written down by his followers who spread his
message. These texts are called sutras. A religion began to form and new branches of Buddhism
were created.
The introduction of Buddhism to Korea impacted the culture and politics of the region immensely.
It fundamentally changed the way in which people interacted and how political actions was carried
out. Buddhism was often used as a political tool by the ruling elites and the royal families. Before
the spread and integration of Buddhism, a very important religion for the Korea people was
Shamanism. Buddhism absorbed the myths,

  • 3. Persian Empire Research Paper The ancient world was a time of great civilisations and greater rulers, and today it is those of Greece and Rome that are remembered. But they were not alone in their military conquests and vast empires; there were many equal to, or perhaps even greater, than them, and it is important not to overlook the achievements of these peoples who have helped to shape history. The Persian Empire is one such of these civilisations, rising to prominence in the mid sixth century BCE and enduring for two hundred years, a small amount of time in which it conquered an impressive amount of territory. At its height, it controlled a huge swathe of land centred in modern day Iran, stretching as far north as the Russian border, as far south as Egypt, and as far... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The efficiency of the Persian Empire s rule over a large area inhabited by people of various different cultures and traditions was one of its most significant achievements. To maintain order, the empire was split into approximately twenty areas known as satrapies, each ruled by a satrap, generally a local of the area. This governmental system enabled large scale taxation to take place, as each satrap collected money from his area and sent it back to the emperor, something which would have been near impossible without these regional leaders; collection of tax provided a constant flow of money to fund the Persian Empire and its operations. Persia also maintained cohesion in its empire through implementation of a common language for use in all government documents, the development of standardised weights and official coinage, and the introduction of a single set of laws to govern the empire in its entirety. Perhaps the most notable achievement of the Persians was the Royal Road, a highway built by Darius I that allowed prompt communication and intelligence gathering, and stretched approximately three thousand kilometres across the Persian Empire. With fresh messengers and horses waiting at stations along this road, a message could be delivered in seven days where it might formerly have taken three months. The organisation of the Empire meant that it remained unified and connected with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As Mackay, the key issue(s) is, how will he continue to operate and pay off his outstanding debts in addition to, what will happen to Lawsons should the loan and line of credit not be approved? • 6. Health And Safety At The Workplace Health and Safety in the Workplace The health and safety in the workplace for workers has created a continual concern in the United States since the country was discovered. Although, a healthy and safe work environment can be described as a work area free of health risks and absent unsafe conditions. Indeed, the definition encompasses additional legal, moral, ethical issues. Particularly, reporting safety issues rather than choosing to ignore them, refusing to fall under peer pressure or fear of retaliation, not accepting bribes and making the conscious decision to report violators of the rules. Initially, certain accidents and injuries within industries were accepted and considered a consequence of the job, eventually workers became less accepting of inadequate working conditions began demanding safer work environments. Therefore, numerous labor unions and organizations formed throughout the history of the United States intended to resolve and mediate issues between employees and employers, including the health and safety of the workers in the workplace. Nevertheless, in an effort to avoid confusion on the accountability of employee health and safety in the workplace the author of this paper has examined the separate entities of OSHA, employers and employees. Although, a minute majority of workers believe that OSHA exclusively is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of workers in the workplace; the alternative belief is that it is the individual responsibility of ... • 7. Amusing Ourselves To Death Essay Question Two: While having read many different authors this semester for this class, two seemed to jump out at me in having the most in common. Neil Postman(1985) does not specifically discuss the societal pressures of forced gender roles in advertising the same way the Jean Kilbourne addresses in her book and film series, but there is a connection in the topics they discuss. I was a bit put off by the task of reading the entire Postman book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, however, the topics in each chapter make for some thought provoking and tantalizing ideas of the societal issues that we seem to take for granted. The chapter about public discourse and the new methods that were employed to create communication through the age of exposition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These two authors do not necessarily have much in common on the surface but just below when one can ascertain the message being put out by each author it is clearly connected in the form of technology, its historical and current uses and how the advent of easy communication technology has allowed us to water down our vast culture by making it easy to objectify humans, animals and nature if the explanation is sensational enough. I ve learned through reading Neil Postman s book(1985), Amusing Ourselves to Death, that we seem to look at forms of communication as following a linear path. The invention of easy communication created a niche in societies that became a place for further discourse, sharing of ideas and knowledge, but in the end, was used ultimately to control, shape and form the masses. Neil Postman delved into topics that I think are somewhat forgotten by history and societies as they become so engrained in our way of viewing the world around us. Jean Kilbourne (1999) taught me that we are all subjected to societal gender normalization through mass media, print media and news programs. The sheer lack of honest and open communication in our society puts us at risk for being objectified, sexualized and demoralized, all without realizing that this is ... • 8. Essay On Broken Windows Theory Introduction to the original Broken Windows Article Broken Windows theory was created by George L. Kelling and James Q. Wilson in March 1982. Their article was based around the idea that if small crimes were not punished, they would eventually lead into larger crimes. The name of the article comes from the idea that is a broken window is not replaced as soon as it is broken, then it is a sign that no one cares. And, as soon as no one cares, then larger more serious crimes are permitted. Throughout the article many different examples are used to support the idea that Broken Windows Theory Policing is an effective way to fight crime. The primary example of this is in New York City, when the then mayor of New York City took on Bratton as the new policechief. He then went on to bring in Broken Windows policing. Almost immediately crime rates began to fall. However, many people disagree about the true reason the crime rates fell. A War Against Minorities Some that disagree with Broken Windows Theory claim it is not actually a crime fighting strategy, but rather it was a under the radar call for the police to crack down on minorities in the USA. Daniel Brook makes the claim that physical decay in neighborhoods is not the most telling sign that a neighborhood is in decay, but rater that it is racially determined. the actual level of physical disorder the number of boarded up buildings, for example wasn t the most important factor in making people think their ... • 9. Influence Of Greek Folk Song Greece sits at the crossroad between the Eastern and Western cultures of Asia and Europe. Being at this critical junction, Greece has experienced the ebb and flow of two cultural currents which subjected and allowed her to assimilate creatively diverse influences. Once Constantinople fell in 1453, completing the collapse of the Byzantine empire, there followed four hundred years of slavery which greatly hindered the natural development of Hellenism and restricted its spiritual evolution. This period was particularly harsh and had an inhibitive influence on Greek music. From the twelfth or thirteenth century forward, an economically exhausted Byzantium was slowly collapsing due to years of factional rebellion, religious disputes, western crusades and eastern invasions. While the new technique of polyphony was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As early as the first century A.D., ancient Greek tragedy, which at its peak of harmonious unity, incorporated poetry, music and dance, had disintegrated into its component elements. Actor tragedians continued to perform only certain parts of the dialogue of the tragedies, while others with good voices sang the vocal parts. There also arose a gesticulator whose purpose was to illustrate, with pantomimic gestures, what the actor tragedian was singing. This gradually transformed the old Attic style of tragedy and comedy into the tragic pantomime style of the imperial Byzantine years that included dance, mime, recitation and song. The reactions of the Church Fathers and the stream of condemnatory decisions and excommunications issued by ecumenical synods indicate the popularity of these spectacle concerts in multi ethnic Byzantium and the influence of the mime performances on the austere moral code of the Christians for many centuries to ... • 12. Politics Of The Polarized Classroom Essay Politics of the Polarized Classroom A Popular Trope By now, one must have already heard or read about the story of a young man standing up to his professor in philosophy class, the latter being a self professed atheist. Simply put, the professor claimed that it was stupid to believe in God because there was no empirical proof of God. The young man, however, wittily retorts that since the class really had no empirical proof of the professor s brain, then they really had no business believing him. The same trope is basically used in a more elaborated rendition in the recent Christian film God s Not Dead (2014). There, an atheist professor challenges a Christian student for his irrational beliefs, but suddenly comes to terms with the irrationality of his own belief system by the end of the movie (Noble). An average movie at best, it can be said that richer meaning might be found in the circumstances of its creation. Movies, after all, mimic aspects of reality regardless of genre, so that the political realities described therein are hardly fictional in nature. Simply put, to create a film is to participate politically (Christensen and Haas 6). Here, it is profitable to point out the three things both texts have in common: (1) both feature an atheistic professor; (2) both feature a Christian student who avidly believes God; and (3) both occur in the classroom. These factors are important to note, and the third point needs stressing, as it is central to the plot of both texts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Literary Analysis Author Information: Maya Angelou, both the writer and protagonist of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, spent the majority of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas in the wake of her parent s divorce at the age of three. She, along with her older brother, lived with their grandmother (Annie Henderson), whom they call Momma, at the only black store in the segregated town of Stamps. Annie later became a big influence in her life and helped her develop self confidence and pride. Growing up, Maya had to deal with her insecurities over her looks and the rejection and abandonment of her biological parents. Southern racism is also a concern and appears throughout her life in the form of humiliation and lynch mobs. From Momma s store, Maya watches the pitiful cotton pickers as they travel to and from work every day. The four people who discovered the structure of DNA built upon the EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY of others: At the time of this discovery, the groundwork in DNA research had been prepared, beginning with the work of Gregor Mendel in the 19th century. NEW TECHNOLOGY: Later, in the decades of the 1940 s and 50 s, the understanding of DNA grew because of new technology. DISCOVERY: It was learned that DNA is made of phosphates, sugars, four bases and discovering that those bases are stacked .34 nanometers apart and that the DNA bases always occur in the same A=T, C=G ratios. PERSONAL MOTIVATION: Part of the motivation for those who discovered the structure of DNA is that there were other individuals and groups interested in answering the same questions about the way life works. The second requirement is necessity which is, also known as the choice of evils, reflects popular moral intuitions and common sense: sometimes, breaking the rules is the right indeed, the only thing to do in order to avoid a greater evil (Bergelson, 2012). For the last decade, a variety of modelling research activities have been carried out to address the complex reverse supply chain optimisation problems. However, most of the research has focused mainly on operational and tactical planning problems which may not provide sufficient insight into the long term design and planning issues of reverse supply chains. Furthermore, a common limitation of most traditional approaches is the lack of incorporating quantitative environmental performance modelling. In this context, this study will focus on strategic reverse supply chain management aiming at determining the setup of economically viable and environmentally friendly reverse supply chain networks. 1.3.1 Research Questions The aims of this research have been translated into nine research questions which are presented as follows: пЃ¬Question 1: What are the general characteristics of reverse supply chains from a logistics point of view? In order to design reverse supply chains at a strategic level, we have to identify the common features of the supply chains. To this end, we will investigate reverse supply chain settings ... Rachel Carson s Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United States When Rachel Carson s Silent Spring was published in 1962, it generated a storm of controversy over the use of chemical pesticides. Miss Carson s intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public of the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with these facts, she explains how in many instances the pesticides have done more harm than good in eradicating the pests they were designed to destroy. In addition to her reports on pesticide use, Miss Carson points out that many of the long term effects that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Impact of Silent Spring When excerpts of Silent Spring first began appearing in The New Yorkermagazine in June 1962, they caused an uproar and brought a howl of indignation from the chemical industry. Supporters of the pesticide industry argued that her book gave an incomplete picture because it did not say anything about the benefits of using pesticides. An executive of the American Cyanamid Company complained, if man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the Dark Ages, and the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth. Chemical manufacturers began undertaking a more aggressive public relations campaign to educate the public on the benefits of pesticide use. Monsanto, for example, published and distributed 5,000 copies of a brochure parodying Silent Spring entitled The Desolate Year, which explained how chemical pesticides were largely responsible for the virtual eradication of diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, sleeping sickness, and typhus in the United States and throughout the world, and that without the assistance of pesticides in agricultural production millions around the world would suffer from malnutrition or starve to death (NRDC 1997). Members of parliament were forced to form coalitions with smaller parties that they had nothing in common with. It was very easy for the small parties, which were usually poorly organized, to hold the balance of power because there had to be compromise in order for important decisions to be made. There was a predominance of the MRP, Socialists and Communists in the party system. This made it even more difficult for political stability to ensue. Princeton University, 2016. x, 290p. Romance is a literary term that has remained shrouded in a cloak of ambiguity for centuries. Many scholars and critics believe that this is due to the frequent redefinition of the term by those attempting to use it as a genre, mode, or style to enhance their work. Due to this obscurity, a study in the poetics of romance is an extensive task that is frequently avoided but desperately needed. Patricia Parker, a professor of English and dramatic literature at Stanford University, eagerly accepts this task in her work Inescapable Romance: Studies in the Poetics of a Mode. Parker sets out to approach romance by focusing less on its content or material than on its form or design a form, above all, which simultaneously quests for and postpones a particular end, objective, or object (4). This is the inescapable quality of romance its tendency to go on and on without regard for resolution. Her study covers five centuries by exploring the implications of romance in the time and works of four celebrated romantic poets: Aristo, Spenser, Milton, and Keats (7). Through this exploration of individual authors and their works, Parker is able to offer suggestions of what, poetically, became of them, their influence, and their significance within the variations of a recurrent mode. It was mainly because most of the Asian countries had been enjoying economic growth prior to the crisis. The crisis itself started with the devaluation of Thailand s Baht in July 1997. The Thailand government decided to float its currency in order to defend the Baht against speculative attack, despite its fixed exchange rate system. This decision was apparently the beginning of the economic downturn of many Asian countries, such as Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Indonesia. Before the crisis, Indonesia s economy was growing rapidly; having a low inflationand a well maintained current account deficit. • 44. Comparison Of Waiting For Icarus And MusпїЅe Des Beaux Arts The two poems Waiting for Icarus and MusГ©e des Beaux Arts are narrative poems. MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is a poem written by W. H. Auden and published in 1938. Waiting for Icarus is a poem written by Muriel Rukeyser and published in 1973. The poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is about how no one truly cares when a tragedy is taking place, unless said tragedy concerns them directly. The poem Waiting for Icarus tells the story about a woman who is reminiscing being abandoned by her lover while waiting for him at the beach. The two poems have a great deal of similarities and differences between them. Despite the fact that MusГ©e des Beaux Arts uses an indifferent tone and irregular rhyme scheme and Waiting for Icarus uses a melancholic tone and no discernible rhyme scheme, both poems use the themes of abandonment and suffering and the myth of Icarus in order to convey to their readers how people deal with pain and misery. Auden touches upon many topics in his poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts. The Encyclopedia of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century writes that, the poem condemns people s habitual inattention to the miseries of others (Mao). In other words, one of the primary focuses in MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is that of apathy. Auden begins his poem by writing, About suffering they were never wrong, / The old Masters: how well they understood / Its human position: how it takes place (lns. 1 3). Here, Auden is setting up another one of the poem s main topics, which is human suffering. Auden is writing about how the old Masters knew how to capture the image of human suffering within the confines of their canvases (ln. 2). Auden then writes, While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; / How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting / For the miraculous birth (lns. 4 6). In these lines Auden is telling his readers that ordinary life will always go on by stating that the old patiently await the arrival of newborn babies, which is a reference to the circle of life. He continues this idea in the next few lines when he writes, there always must be / Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating / On a pond at the edge of the wood (lns. 6 8).
