Introduction
• Computer is the finest and most important gift of science and
technology to the mankind.
• It has done miracles in almost all walks of life.
• Today, there is no aspect of our life that remain untouched by
the use and application of computers.
• In the field of education too, these are being used for
managing its affairs including the actual teaching.
• With the introduction of New Education Policy in 1986, our
country also have taken initiative for making their use in the
teaching-learning activities.
• So the instruction work carried out with the help of computer
is generally known as Computer Assisted Instruction(CAI) .
Computer- assisted Instruction
• Meaning: Its a type of instruction aided or
carried out with the help of a computer as a
machine.
• Definition:
Bhatt and Sharma(1992): “ CAI is an
interaction between a student, a computer
controlled display and a response entry device
for the purpose of achieving educational
outcomes”.
This definition brings into limelight the
following things:
1. In CAI there is an interaction between an individual
student and the computer just as happens in the
tutorial system between the teacher and an individual
student.
2. The computer is able to display the instructional
material to the individual student.
3. The individual student takes benefit of the displayed
material and respond to it. These responses are
attended by the computer for deciding the future
course of instruction displayed to the learner.
4. The interaction between the individual learner and
the computer device helps in the realisation of the set
instruction objectives.
