CONCEPT OF COMMUNICATION
The word ‘communicate’ has been derived from the
Latin word ‘Communicare’, which means to ‘share’.
Communication is an exchange of facts, ideas, opinions, or
emotions by two or more persons.
The following standard definitions of communication
should help you in understanding the concept in a better
way :
According to American Management Association, “ Any
behavior that results in exchange of meaning.“
CONCEPT OF COMMUNICATION
According to Louis A. Allen , “ Communication is the sum
of all the things one person does when he wants to create
understanding in the mind of another. It is a bridge of
meaning . It involves a Systematic and continuous process
of telling, listening and understanding.“
According to M W Cummins , “The word communication
describes the process of conveying message( fact, ideas,
attitude and opinions) from one person to another so that
they are understood.”
Model of Communication
Model or channel that is used for communication
plays a very vital role in the process of
communication. The model or objectives of any
communication is to :
 Promote – If any idea is to be promoted , it has to be shared
with others. If any product or service is to be promoted in the
market, advertisements are given in print or electronic media.
 Inform – Any information, data, knowledge of any kind to be
passed to others, is possible only through communication. It
may be verbal, written, or through gestures, body language etc.
Model of Communication
Educate – Communication is necessary for giving
lessons to educate others in any subject. Education
can be for the management, employee or general
public.
Organize–Any organising needs are not possible
unless and until some communication, verbal or
written takes place.
Relate –Relationship between different people
performing different types of tasks in any organization is
possible only through communication.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION

Communication may be divided into two types :

Formal Communication
• Formal Communication establishes and enforces a
working relationship between different members of the
organization.
• Formal communication assumes three forms –
downward, horizontal and upward.
Formal Communication
• Downward communication is used for passing orders,
instructions, directions etc. It is also used by senior
managers to change the conduct and behaviour of
juniors.
• Horizontal communication is used for passing
information of different kinds amongst the workers at
same level.
• Upward communication is used by juniors to report to
seniors put up their requests or suggestions for
improvement of the system.
Informal Communication
• The informal communication takes place whenever
two persons or group socially interact with each
other.
• Whenever there is some special occasion,
informal information passes on freely between the
people who are present at the occasion.
