Composition: Analysis Chapter Nine, The Leech from the Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most iconic books in history; its storyline,
theme and literal characters have made an impact on the world of literature for hundreds of years.
What stands out the most in the book is the use of archaic diction and figurative language, which serve
to paint vivid, descriptive pictures of each character, specifically, Roger Chillingworth. In chapter nine
of The Scarlet Letter, The Leech , Nathaniel Hawthorne uses setting, allusion, metaphor, irony,
diction, and tone to reveal Roger Chillingworth, the town Leech s, evil, ominous character displayed
by his actions and words. Throughout chapter nine of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne places
Chillingworth in or near the cemetery by the widow s house, an ominous setting that foreshadows his
death. During the book as a whole, Chillingworth usually pops up in spooky settings, such as Hester s
jail cell, the woods, Dimmesdale s dark lit room, and the scaffold at night, these all playing into the
eerie nature of Chillingworth himself. Towards the beginning of this chapter, it is suggested that
Chillingworth had come to terms with the reality of his estranged wife, Hester, having a child by
another man, and was so distraught and embarrassed that he changed his identity with a vengeance.

Creation myths are stories describing or explaining the creation of the world. Each culture has their

Dark, striking, and afflictive are adjectives that my mind conceives when experiencing a migraine.

The goals of both pathways are obscure. Yet, the poet needs to pick one of them as he can t choose
both roads at once. Utilizing yellow wood (line 1) as a representative signal to seniority moving

The films, The Magnificent Seven , and, Seven Samurai , essentially portray the same events in action,
especially in the introductory scene. However, The Magnificent Seven , portrays the western version
while Seven Samurai takes place in an eastern village. The films also choose a different order to show
events and to go about each event. They do, however, portray the same basic idea: an innocent village
faces bandits who have no intentions besides pillaging and stealing all belongings from the villagers,
even if death of villagers must come from their intentions. The scene I have chosen to compare
between the two films is the introduction scene. I have chosen to analyze and compare this scene from
each film because while they show direct similarities in events as well as camera angles, the films
differ in many ways as well. The scene in, The Magnificent Seven , begins with the bandits riding in
on horses over a hill top towards a village to the tune of peppy western music. This scene is shot as a
far away angle and is done so with no verbal communication, almost as if the bandits all have one
common goal and they do not have to discuss with one another to know that is their intentions. This
leads to the viewer being required to view the scene as a whole and consider what the intentions of
these men must be and why they feel that way. When the men arrive to the village, the viewer is given
little to no information regarding the village. The viewer then begins to wonder: Who are these
people? , Did they do something to deserve this? , Maybe they know each other personally. The
bandits then approach the villagers as if they own the place . They are asking for drinks, sitting down
as they please, and even taking as they wish. The villagers seem to go along with this as though they
are used to it and intend to fully comply. This can be seen through the conversation between the bandit
and villager where the villager talks very quietly, slurring his words, and telling the bandit what he
wants to hear. The bandits then begin to leave as a villager runs after the bandits with intentions of
standing up to them, almost to be leading the village to rebell. The bandits quickly show they will not

correspondence theory. The premise behind this ideology states knowledge results from a mapping of
external objects that are related to the brain through sensory organs (Heylighen, Pg. 2). Reflection

From birth, three basic necessities are recognized as vital in order to sustain life, those being clothing,
shelter, and food (which also includes water). With these three basic requirements met, a human can
survive. However surviving and living one s life fully as a human are separate things, and the question
must be asked does the limitation of food to the bare minimum required to continue sustaining one s
body begin to also impinge on one s humanity (which for the purposes of this paper will be defined as
the entire human existence, physically, emotionally, and otherwise) in a more thorough way? Food is a
prime example of how the slave labor camp, Buna, as told by Primo Levi in his memoir Survival in
Auschwitz, attempted to dehumanize Levi. Levi begins with the journey (the literal one) at a camp in
Italy where he is being held. It was announced by the Germans that Jews would be leaving the camp
destination unknown. Loaded onto buses, the crowds were taken to a train station where they boarded
and were off. Levi recalls the discomfort of the train and accounts of others around him. Upon arrival,
the men and women were separated, and soon thereafter Levi, unaware the same fate awaited him,

The Theory Of General Strain Theory Essay
Introduction
In the 1980 s, Criminologist, Robert Agnew, presented his theory of general strain, in which he covers
a range of negative behaviors, especially how adolescents deal with stresses of strain. General strain
theory focuses on the source, such as anything that changes in the individual s life that causes strain.
His theory provides a different outlook on social control and social learning theory for two reasons:
the type of social relationship that leads to delinquency and the motivation for the delinquency
(Agnew, 1992). He states that certain strains and stresses increase the likelihood for crime such as
economic deprivation, child abuse, and discrimination. These factors can cause an increase of crime
through a range of negative emotions. For some people it can take a lot of willpower to take a
corrective action and try to deter away from committing crime in a way that they can relieve these
negative emotions. When people cannot cope with the stresses of the strain, they turn to crime as a
coping mechanism. Agnew also states, that not all people that experience the stresses of strain will go
forward to committing crime and live a deviant life.
Agnew assumes that all people of all social classes experience and deal with frustration when
experiencing a great amount of stress. The general strain theory bridges the gap between the poor and
the rich. The stresses of strain is a universal feeling that every individual experiences at some point in
time of their life.

Over the years, video gaming has become more and more popular and has started to become

Both of these companies focus provides clothing for the outdoorsman. A mission statement is an

Septimus s is viewed in society as a man who suffers from trauma from the war versus Clarissa, who

In the book Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf wanted to cast the social system and bash it for how it
worked. Her intricate focus is focusing not on the people, but on the morals of a certain class at a
