CLIMATE
Is the average weather
condition that exists in a
place or area for a long
period of time.
Three Climate Zones in the
World
•Tropical Climate – places near the equator. They are
warm all year round. Also characterized by high humidity.
•Polar Climate – places near the poles. They are always
cold. The average temperature does not go higher than
freezing.
•Temperate Climate - the weather is not very hot nor
very cold. The summers are warm and the winters are
mild.
Factors that Affects the Climate of
a Place
•Temperature – measurement that indicates how hot
or cold.
•Latitude – the measurement of distance north or south
of the equator.
•Altitude or Elevation – the temperature of air
decreases as you go higher into the atmosphere
•Bodies of Water
•Marine Climate – when the area is near an ocean.
Cooler summers and warmer winters.
•Continental Climate – when the area is located
within a large land mass. Hot summers and cold
winters.
•Amount of Rainfall – as the wind
changes direction, the amount of rainfall also
changes.
Wind System of the Earth
•Doldrums – at the equator, surface winds are
very calm. These winds are called the doldrums. In
the doldrums, air is rising.
•Horse Latitudes – at about 30° latitude north
and south of the equator, the air moving from the
equator cools and begins to sink. The sky is clear and
the winds are calm.
• Trade winds – they blow from the northeast to the
southwest in the northern hemisphere.
• Prevailing Westerlies – some of the heavy sinking
air that continues to move toward the north and south
poles shift toward the east.
• Polar Westerlies – from 65° latitude to the poles, the
air moving from the poles moves westward. The air is cold.
They send strong cold winds toward the equator.
SEASONS
These are the weather changes
throughout the year.
Two Seasons (Wet and Dry
Season)
Four Seasons (Spring, Summer,
Autumn, Winter)
Seasons
2 SEASONS
•Dry Season
•Rainy Season
4 SEASONS
•Spring
•Summer
•Autumn
•Winter
Things to Know
The scientific study of weather is called meteorology. It
began in Italy in the 17th century, when instruments were
developed to measure changes in the temperature of the air,
its pressure and its moisture content.
Weather is different from Climate.
Weather - consists of such elements as temperature of air, air
pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and condition of the
sky. It changes from hour to hour or from day to day.
Climate - average weather condition in a place over a long period
of time.
Things to Value
• Love nature and its beauty.
• Occupation, activities, clothing and sports of people depend
on the season and the climate in the place.
• Peoples activities can bring about changes in the climate.
Burning fuels in motor vehicles and power stations release
large amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. Too much
carbon dioxide cause a greenhouse effect rises the
temperature of the air around. This heat will melt the snow
and may cause floods.
