Circadian rhythms have three key criteria: they have an endogenous period of approximately 24 hours, can be entrained by external cues, and exhibit temperature compensation. A key experiment involved transplanting the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) between animals, discovering it controls circadian rhythms. The Clock gene was also discovered in 1994 as a central part of the circadian mechanism that involves transcriptional feedback loops.
