Exceptional children
The term exceptional children may be referred in a
generic sense to all those children who deviate seriously
on the negative, positive and multiple sides on one or the
other aspects of the growth and development of their
personality from the average children to the extent of
requiring special provision in terms of their education and
adjustment for helping them in seeking their proper
adjustment, development and progress in life.
Types Of Exceptional Children
 Mentally or Intellectually Exceptional Children
 Sensory Exceptional Children
 Non-sensory Physically Exceptional Children
 Communication Exceptional Children
 Learning or Academically Exceptional Children
 Socially and Emotionally Exceptional Children
 Multiple Disabled and Severely Affected Exceptional Children
Mentally or Intellectually
Exceptional Children
 GIFTED CHILDREN: The term gifted encompasses those
children who posses a superior intellectual potential
and functional ability to achieve academically in the
top 15-20 percent of the school population. They have
an I.Q of above 140.
 CREATIVE CHILDREN: According to researchers, children
with average intelligence has been found more
creative.
 MENTALLY DEFICIENT CHILDREN: Children having
negative abnormalities are mentally deficient. Their I.Q
is less than average.
 Visually impaired: Visual acuity is less than 6/60
or 20/200 or field of vision is less than 20 degree
in better eye after correction.
 Hearing Impaired: hearing loss of more than 70 dB
in better ear.
Sensory Exceptional Children
Non-sensory Physically Exceptional Children
 Orthopedic impairment: Special learning
needs in areas requiring functional use of
hands, arms, feet, legs or other locomotive
body parts.
Communication Exceptional Children
 Communication Disorder: Children vary in
understanding the views of others and equally
deficient in communicating their views.
Learning or Academically Exceptional Children
 LEARNING DISABLED CHILDREN: These children are
educationally average or good but experience
difficulty in learning any special subject
 SLOW LEARNER :The children who have IQ above
70,but learn at a reduced rate compared to their
peers ,are referred as slow learners, or as borderline
children.
Socially and Emotionally Exceptional Children
 EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED CHILDREN: The children are unable to
maintain satisfactory inter-personal relationships at home, in the
neighborhood, school and society.
 Socially delinquent: Children who are involved in anti-social activities,
breaking laws, doing destructive work like murder, rape, violence,
thefts.
 Socially Deprived: The state of deprivation arises among children due
to some social, economic and cultural deficiencies.
Multiple Disabled and Severely Affected Exceptional Children
 CEREBRAL PALSY: It is a problem that affects muscle tone, movement,
and motor skills. It hinders the body's ability to move in a coordinated
and purposeful way.
 AUTISTIC CHILDREN: They have communication difficulties, narrow
interests and repetitive behavior.
 MULTIPLE DISABILITY: Children with more than one exceptionality

Mentally or Intellectually Exceptional Children  GIFTED CHILDREN: The term gifted encompasses those children who posses a superior intellectual potential and functional ability to achieve academically in the top 15-20 percent of the school population. They have an I.Q of above 140.  CREATIVE CHILDREN: According to researchers, children with average intelligence has been found more creative.  MENTALLY DEFICIENT CHILDREN: Children having negative abnormalities are mentally deficient. Their I.Q is less than average.
