Driving Member Engagement by Showing #VolunteerLoveBillhighway
Mark your calendars: National Volunteer Week is April 19-25th! It’s the perfect opportunity to start thinking about ways to show your chapter volunteers the appreciation they deserve all year-round. Volunteering is one of the stickiest forms of member engagement, and happy volunteers can keep your association chapters on track for years to come. Given that 20-25% of staff labor in associations come from volunteer members, it’s a worthwhile effort to utilize recognition in creating a supportive environment. Let’s draw from research and our own community for a dynamic discussion on ways to spotlight association volunteers and celebrate volunteering in all aspects!

Drive Chapter Behavior with Targeted BenchmarkingBillhighway
Benchmarking (count and compare) can serve many purposes, but the most important purpose is to define what’s most important! Everyone’s likely heard some variation on the business maxim, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure,” but the corollary consequence, “you tend to manage what’s being measured” is often overlooked. Bottom line, if we want our chapters to help us serve the members and move the mission, we need to benchmark those behaviors that help us achieve that end. In other words, let’s count the things that count…and, oh by the way, all the things that count can’t necessarily be counted!
Benchmarking also implies comparison, and here’s the other important purpose. When we measure and make comparisons on those metrics which are truly important, we can then identify our “bright spots” – the high achievers – and replicate those behaviors across the system. Win-win!!
We talk about what we’re benchmarking (or not) and why. While there’s no guarantee, experience suggests that “if you measure it, they will do it,” so let’s be sure we measure the right stuff.

Chapter Benchmarking Report: What the Data, Success Stories & Opinions Tell UsBillhighway
Chapter membership takes on a significant value in an increasingly online world. Members seek face-to-face opportunities to connect, learn, volunteer, and socialize with their peers, mentors, and clients. Once upon a time, chapters were taken for granted, but many association leaders now have questions like.
- How does our chapter program compare to those of other associations?
- What are the standard practices regarding chapter membership, programming, requirements, and metrics?
- What support and services should we be giving chapters? Are other associations making changes to chapters?
- How do we assess the performance and value of our chapters?
- Are chapters still relevant?
In our latest Chapter Benchmarking Report, we explore these questions through industry data that helps associations benchmark their chapter programs against others. Join us for a webinar that fuels the dialogue on what makes an effective chapter—and an effective chapter/association relationship. We’ll share stories on what methods other associations have used to leverage their data, and how they have helped chapters and staff make better decisions.

Revenue Revamp: 5 Game-Changing Fixes Help Chapters Increase Non-Dues Revenue...Billhighway
As an association exec, you’d love for 2024 to be a year of strong non-dues revenue growth – for you and your chapters. If sponsors, exhibitors, and advertisers believe your chapters can positively impact their bottom lines, chapters will convert more customers with less effort.
But most chapters (and some associations) inadvertently turn off those buyers because of website navigation, collateral, and messaging that leaves prospects confused and unconvinced. How can we help our chapters?
This fun session will outline simple changes that will help chapters to attract and convert sponsors, exhibitors, and advertisers efficiently and effectively including:
- How to quickly create a compelling case to invest money with your association
- Which stats and stories provide the most effective social proof of your value
- What information buyers need at various stages of their buying journey
We're diving into simple, game-changing fixes to help your chapters skyrocket their non-dues revenue. Think attracting sponsors, exhibitors, and advertisers like a pro!
Communication lies at the heart of every successful association, driving growth, engagement, and impact in today’s fast-paced world. For chapters, communicating effectively is paramount to their strength and success. Are you ready to take your chapter communications to new heights?

11 Ways to Help Chapters Avoid (Or handle) a CrisisBillhighway
Sit back and enjoy this webinar where we decode crises we see (and feel) in chapters. We cover all kinds of troublesome scenarios, from chapter financial mismanagement, fraud, and cybersecurity attacks to AWOL or unprepared chapter officers and everything in between.
Your association’s approach to chapter crisis management and prevention depends entirely on your relationship with your components – in terms of both structure (subsidiary or independent) and your connection. While this webinar assumes chapters are subsidiaries, a situation that brings more risk to National and supposedly provides more control. Even if your components are independent, you (and your chapters) will benefit from this advice. Join us for some tips and best practices to help handle (or hopefully avoid) your next chapter crisis!

Can You Hear Me? Effective Practices in Communicating with Chapter LeadersBillhighway
Good old-fashioned communication is one of the best ways to build successful relationships with your chapters. Communication is a two-way street, but not everyone communicates in the same way.
Have you ever been frustrated by the lack of transparency between you and your chapters? Or felt like your communication revolved around administrative asks instead of resources and advice? Maybe it’s time to Mari Kondo your chapter communications.
Peggy Hoffman from Mariner Management — with help from some super communicator CRPs —shares advice and examples on creating effective chapter communication practices.
Speakers:
- Peggy Hoffman, Mariner Management
- Michele Champion, California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT)
- Jennifer Steffan, National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP)

Idea Swap: Helping Chapters Embrace ChangeBillhighway
We need chapter leaders to make changes. It could be huge like shifting structures, medium like embracing new volunteer models, support services, affiliate agreements, or easy like changing your schedule. Resistance to change is natural. Anytime you introduce a new process or technology, you have to think about change management from the very start. Unfortunately, we underestimate how our leader training can support us in leading that change. This idea swap will explore how we can use our current and future training opportunities to help chapters embrace change.

Idea Swap: Ways to Celebrate & Appreciate Our VolunteersBillhighway
Don’t let National Volunteer Week (#NVW) sneak up on you! National Volunteer Week is April 17th through April 23rd. So go ahead and mark your calendars now! It’s an opportunity to shine a light on the people who tirelessly serve our associations. Volunteers represent a large portion of our organizations and keep our chapters thriving, making them critical to our ability to meet member needs and move our missions. We’d be lost without them.
The question is, how do we authentically reward, recognize and support our chapter volunteers? To celebrate, we’ve compiled our favorite ways to show appreciation now or at any time of the year. In reality, we don’t need a month or week designated to thank our volunteers; instead, we should be showing our appreciation all year long. So join us for an idea swap with your CRP peers chocked full of ideas and inspiration to show your volunteers some love.

Virtual Idea Swap: Coaching Chapter Leaders for SuccessBillhighway
What would we do without chapter volunteers? They’re our everything! Year after year, volunteers step up, take on chapter leadership roles, then step aside for the next set of leaders. So how do we ensure our volunteers have what they need to contribute? How can we inspire them?
In this chapter virtual idea swap—Coaching Chapter Leaders for Success—you'll be able to collaborate with your CRP peers on essential coaching skills aimed at attracting and motivating volunteer leaders.
Billhighway: A Solution for Better Chapter Performance Billhighway
Do you ever wonder if there are ways you can help your chapters be more effective? Chapter leaders are typically not association management experts. They’re not financial whizzes, compliance professionals, database managers, technologists, or website administrators. The responsibilities of managing a chapter take many of them far outside their comfort zone and can limit their effectiveness in serving members.
The good news is you and your chapter leaders don’t have to put up with this frustrating situation. The solution is out there, but you might not know about it yet. Everyone’s familiar with AMS, LMS, event registration platforms, and other tools used for chapter management. But do you know that Billhighway unifies all that functionality into one solution that helps to significantly improve chapter performance, increase member retention, and grow revenue? Join us to learn more about how you can dramatically increase the performance of your chapters and why your chapter leaders and Executive Director will love you for it.
We traditionally focus on resources, tools, and insights that help you and your chapters without being a commercial for Billhighway. This webinar is different, so we want to be upfront about it. In times like these, associations need Billhighway more than ever. So we’re breaking with tradition and focusing this webinar on demonstrating how the Billhighway solution can help component-based associations solve the unique challenges of our current times.
Prepping for 2022: Chapter Virtual Idea SwapBillhighway
With 2021 winding down, what’s ahead for chapters? COVID will still be “a thing” and, for some, budgets will still be in flux. We can expect there will be challenges and new opportunities galore. So we put our collective heads together to think positively and proactively about 2022. We offered some tips based on 2021 and collaborated on how to prepare for next year. Participants shared lessons learned, ideas tried and solutions found.
Chapter Events: Deciding on In-Person, Hybrid, or VirtualBillhighway
What’s the outlook for in-person chapter events in 2021 and how do we help chapter leaders decide whether to host an in-person, hybrid, or virtual event?
For nearly a year, CRPs and chapter leaders have focused on virtual. As the vaccine rolls out across the country, the focus is shifting to when chapters can resume in-person meetings (and indeed some already have). But should chapters plan on in-person meetings this year? Can they provide a safe experience? Will members be ready? What about hybrid—the word on everyone’s mind? Is that a viable possibility?
Like you, we had more questions than answers so we tapped one of the brightest minds we know on association and chapter events. Join us as we provide expert advice on how to help chapters make the right event decisions.
Hosted by Billhighway and Mariner Management.
3 Ways to Tap Chapter Relevance in 2021Billhighway
We’re at the beginning of a new year, and opportunity abounds us. We know chapters are more relevant than ever. In many ways, the success in 2020 for components was tied to the fact that they were in a position to pivot more readily. We can harness that agility with the right support and permissions, so how do we tap chapters? Learn three lenses to view chapter relevance through and how to make a case to optimize chapters as part of your overall association success strategy in 2021.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

HOW TO GET STARTED
• Make it a priority
• Get chapter leaders involved by creating a working group
• Set a communication cadence
• Meet face-to-face
• Plan a session at your annual conference to include all
chapter leaders for networking, not just training
• Ask for their feedback – find out what they want to learn
• Find and bring in experts
What is it?
• The process of
improving and
increasing staff
capabilities through
education and
training
opportunities
internally and
externally
• Helps build and
maintain morale
and attract higher
quality
staff/volunteers
7. • $250 retention incentive awarded
to chapters that retain 95 percent
or more of their membership
• $500 award for chapters that
recruit the most new incentive
qualified chapter members—
awarded in ten categories based
on chapter size.
• $100 awarded quarterly to the
top recruiting non-affiliated
chapter
• $50 for rosters submitted before
Jan. 15
http://www1.moaa.org/Main_Menu/Chapters_and_Councils/Chapter_Recruiting/Recruiting_Materials/Chapter_Recruiting_Awards_and_Incentives.html
Example: MOAA Chapter Recruiting
Awards & Incentives
• $10 for each new incentive qualified chapter membership
• $15 for each new PREMIUM Member and $30 for each
new LIFE Member who joins your chapter
• $250 awarded quarterly to the councils based on new
chapter membership
#2 Create Awards
& Incentives
8. HOW TO GET STARTED
• Determine your goals
• Decide how you will measure the achievement of goals
• Determine a budget
• Determine your awards, what will motivate chapters? (money,
gift cards, recognition at annual conference?)
• Find the appropriate avenues to promote the program
• Keep it simple
• Pilot an awards program with a small test group to start
What is it?
A way to incentivize
chapters and leaders
to increase
engagement,
recruitment and
retention
#2 Create Awards
& Incentives
9. Example: Higher Logic Chapter Communities
• Society of Mechanical Engineers (SME) used the Higher Logic platform to
support of their chapters with consistent branding, etc.
• Success might be 50 branded chapter websites created & 100 events posted
in their centralized calendaring system within the first six months.
#3 Online Community
for Chapters
10. #3 Online Community
for Chapters What is it?
A place for a group of people
with common interests to
interact, share and
collaborate with each other
without being face-to-face
HOW TO GET STARTED
• Evaluate the need for an online community
• Survey on interest
• Listen to the feedback you receive – don’t move
ahead if chapters won’t use it
• Investigate your options and what a community has to
offer (weigh pros & cons)
• Talk to others who are doing it
• My Community Manager (http://mycmgr.com/) can
provide tips and tricks to get started
11. Example: AMA
• Challenge = No system to track event speakers
• Instead of building, initiated partnership with Ortate (Ortate grew their base)
Example: National Association of Realtors
• Challenge = increase consumer outreach
• Established national partnership with Boys & Girls Club of America
#4 Create a Best in

http://associationsnow.com/2016/07/solving-problems-mutually-beneficial-partnerships/
http://associationsnow.com/2015/08/partnership-helps-nar-chapters-fulfill-core-standards-requirement
12. HOW TO GET STARTED:
• Download your current challenges
• Align challenges with your biggest member engagement issue
If we take events for example:
• Survey your top 10% of high performing chapters
• Find out what marketing collateral they use for events
• Ask when they send their material (what day of the week,
what time, how far in advance, where do they post
events, do they only use email to communicate?)
• Who could you partner with to accomplish this?
#4 Create a Best in
Breed Experience
What is it?
A way to leverage
solutions and
programs that already
exist, so you don’t
have to create them
from scratch and
avoid the pitfalls of not
being an expert in
everything
13. Example: GBTA Chapter
Mentoring
• Kicking off initiative created by Chapter
Presidents
• Established KPIs to self-measure and shared
the results with the entire group.
• Intent is to match underperforming chapters
with high-performing chapters.
#5 Peer to Peer Mentoring
14. HOW TO GET STARTED:
• Evaluate and rate/rank your chapters
• Focus on those that are struggling
• Pair them with a chapter leader of a high
performing chapter
• Have them put a meeting on the calendar for
regular check-ins
#5 Peer to Peer
Mentoring
What is it?
Keeping your chapter leaders
connected. Allowing them to
share what works and what
doesn’t and learn from that.
You can’t google what other
chapters in your org are doing.
15. Investing in your chapters, ultimately invests
directly into your members.
Ground Rules
#1 Nurture all-star chapter leaders
#2 Connect chapters to one another
#3 Sharp focus on your goals
#4 Re-evaluate if the program is
working

Development funds are limited to CAE prep, association management education and membership in ASAE or association management allied society. Total funding for this effort is $10,000 for this fiscal year and will be provided on a first come, first serve basis until the fund is used. A great way to utilize the Professional Development Fund is by sitting for the CAE exam. A link to the exam content can be found here.

Check out the great resources on Higher Logic’s blog on how to get engagement
Higher Logic Chapter Communities
Separate chapter communities, a site feature implemented using Higher Logic’s sub-group capability, fosters greater engagement by enabling members who belong to a regional chapter to keep in touch with those they meet at the chapter events. Chapter communities also enable Dynamic Communities to give the local chapter leaders more responsibility. For example, chapter leaders can now use the community to discuss dates, topics and speakers for their upcoming events, and they can set up and manage their own meetings, reducing the burden on the Dynamic Communities staff. Chapter leaders can also send email, develop reports, and welcome new members to the chapter.
Place for other community managers to network and share tips/ideas

Instead of building a solution from scratch, they initiated a partnership with Orate. Orate benefited grew their base
NARNAR set a new, higher standard for “consumer outreach”. They established a national partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of America to provide access to opportunities for chapters to reach the new standard.
Set your standards for chapters high, but don’t leave them out to dry. Provide them the tools and support they need to be engaged at the expected levels.
It’s a win-win. You might not have all the answers/expertise, but someone out there most likely does.
Look for synergies within your organizationunderstand where you can help chapter leaders add value to members and help shape and impact the experience had by all.
Networking and education are two of the top reasons cited by members for joining an association. This partnership puts AMA in a position to help chapters host events with quality speakers that add value to members
