It’s the use of
nonverbal
elements of
the voice to
communicate!
Uhhh.. Do what?
Vocal characterizers like laughter and sobbing!
Vocal qualifiers like intensity
(loud/soft), pitch (high/low), and
extent (drawl and clipping)!
Heyyyy Y’all!
Vocal segregates like “uh”, “um”, “uh-
huh”, “huh”, and “psst” are common!
“psst” is a polite
way of calling a
waiter in Spain!
Soft speaking shows
good manners and
education in Thailand!
Increased
volume British
English speakers
= Anger
Increased volume in
Indian English =
Command attention
Silence is
simply the
absence of
speech and
sound!
Silence to people in the U.S. normally
conveys lack of attention/initiative!
In the U.S. we have to speak up to
participate!
“Confusion”
“Agreement”
“Awe”
“Apathy”
And many
more….
Someone is fearful of communicating!
The term for this is called
communication apprehension
(commonly called stage fright)!
Communication apprehension is the
fear/anxiety associated with real or
expected communication with another
person!
Silence in Asia is commonly
acceptable, but in the West
silence is considered socially
disagreeable!
In Confucian context,
silence (not talking), is
a virtue!
Greeks regard
silence as refusal!
Egyptians consider
silence a form of
consent!
