ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), also known as adrenocorticotropin, is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. ACTH stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids like cortisol and helps regulate the body's response to stress. It is part of a negative feedback loop where glucocorticoids inhibit further secretion of corticotropin-releasing hormone. ACTH is produced along with other hormones from a precursor protein called proopiomelanocortin in the pituitary gland.
