Biomechanics is the study of the mechanical aspects of living organisms, including the forces that cause or result from their motion. It has two main sub-branches: statics which studies systems at rest or in constant motion, and dynamics which studies accelerated systems. Biomechanists study questions like what lifting techniques minimize stress on the low back, what pitching mechanics reduce joint stresses, and what elements of running technique enable some sprinters to outperform others. Biomechanics analysis can be qualitative, pertaining to motion without numbers, or quantitative, using measurable values like speed, height and mass.
