Ceramics usually have multiple atoms and are compounds of metallic cations and nonmetallic anions. They generally have high melting temperatures, are good electrical and thermal insulators, and are chemically stable and hard, though also brittle. Common applications of ceramics include dinnerware, sanitary ware, bricks, tiles, abrasives, refractories, cements, and advanced ceramics used in industrial applications requiring resistance to heat, vibration, and shock.
