“CBT is a process of teaching, coaching, and reinforcing positive behaviors. CBT helps people to identify cognitive patterns or thoughts and emotions that are linked with behaviors.”
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Abuse Recovery.pdfDiscoveryPointRetrea
Individuals who come to treatment are often conflicted. Substance abuse has negatively impacted their lives, but they cannot imagine a better or different future without it. The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to help individuals change their lives by placing more emphasis on things they need to value, rather than what their addiction is telling them to value.
CBT helps them envision how their lives would improve if they pursued aspirations aligned with their values. When individuals reflect on their values and aspirations, they can see their actions’ short-term and long-term effects. As a result, individuals are motivated to change old habits and adopt healthier lifestyles.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. INTRODUCTION:
• Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment
that helps people learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing
thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior and emotions.
• Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on changing the automatic negative
thoughts that can contribute to and worsen emotional difficulties, depression,
and anxiety. These spontaneous negative thoughts have a detrimental influence
on mood.
• Through CBT, these thoughts are identified, challenged, and replaced with
more objective, realistic thoughts.

4. TYPES OF CBT:
CBT encompasses a range of techniques and approaches that address thoughts, emotions, and
behaviors. These can range from structured psychotherapies to self-help materials. There are a number
of specific types of therapeutic approaches that involve CBT, including:
• Cognitive therapy: centers on identifying and changing inaccurate or distorted thinking
patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors.2
• Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): addresses thoughts and behaviors while incorporating
strategies such as emotional regulation and mindfulness.
• Multimodal therapy: suggests that psychological issues must be treated by addressing seven
different but interconnected modalities: behavior, affect, sensation, imagery, cognition, interpersonal
factors, and drug/biological considerations.
• Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT): involves identifying irrational beliefs,
actively challenging these beliefs, and finally learning to recognize and change these thought
patterns.
5. CBT TECHNIQUES:
• Identifying Negative Thoughts
It is important to learn how thoughts, feelings, and situations can contribute to maladaptive
behaviors.5 The process can be difficult, especially for people who struggle with introspection, but it
can ultimately lead to self-discovery and insights that are an essential part of the treatment process.
• Practicing New Skills
It is important to start practicing new skills that can then be put in to use in real-world situations. For
example, a person with a substance use disorder might start practicing new coping skills and rehearsing
ways to avoid or deal with social situations that could potentially trigger a relapse.
• Goal-Setting
Goal setting can an important step in recovery from mental illness and helping you make changes to
improve your health and life. During CBT, a therapist can help with goal-setting skills by teaching you
how to identify your goal, distinguish between short- and long-term goals, set SMART (specific,
measurable, attainable, relevant, time-based) goals, and focus on the process as much as the end
outcome.
6. • Problem-Solving
Learning problem solving skills can help you identify and solve problems that arise from life stressors,
both big and small, and reduce the negative impact of psychological and physical illness.
• Problem solving in CBT often involves five steps:
• Identifying a problem
• Generating a list of possible solutions
• Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each possible solution
• Choosing a solution to implement
• Implementing the solution6
• Self-Monitoring
Also known as diary work, self-monitoring is an important part of CBT that involves tracking behaviors,
symptoms, or experiences over time and sharing them with your therapist. Self-monitoring can help
provide your therapist with the information needed to provide the best treatment. For example, for people
coping with eating disorders, self-monitoring may involve keeping track of eating habits as well as any
thoughts or feelings that went along with consuming that meal or snack.
7. WHAT CBT CAN HELP WITH:
Cognitive behavior therapy can be used as a short-term treatment to help individuals learn to
focus on present thoughts and beliefs.1
CBT is used to treat a wide range of conditions including:
• Addiction
• Anger issues
• Anxiety4
• Bipolar disorder
• Depression
• Eating disorders
• Panic attacks
• Personality disorders
• Phobias
8. In addition to mental health conditions, CBT has been found to help people cope
with the following:
• Chronic pain or serious illnesses
• Divorce or break-ups
• Grief or loss
• Insomnia9
• Low self-esteem
• Relationship problems
• Stress management
