This document provides instructions for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). It outlines the five links in the chain of survival: immediate response, early CPR, rapid defibrillation, advanced life support, and post-cardiac care. CPR involves chest compressions to circulate blood and rescue breathing to deliver oxygen when a person is unconscious, not breathing, and pulseless. The steps for performing chest compressions and using an AED are described. Emphasis is placed on pushing hard and fast for chest compressions without interrupting compressions. Slight modifications are needed for infants and children.
