Introduction ...
When a patient experiences a
cardiac arrest you need to
 ACT swiftly
 ACTcorrectly
 START BASIC LIFE
SUPPORT
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
Introduction
 Brain requires adequate amount of
oxygen and begins to fail after 3-4
mins w/o oxygen and will loose
consciousness, heart and breathing
will stop .

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT
SEQUENCES OF PROCEDURES PERFORMED TO
RESTORE THE CIRCULATION OF OXYGENATED
BLOOD AFTER A SUDDEN PULMONARY AND/OR
CARDIAC ARREST
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT
 CHEST COMPRESSIONS AND
PULMONARY VENTILATION
PERFORMED BY
 ANYONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO
IT,
 ANYWHERE
 IMMEDIATELY
 WITHOUT ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
BACKGROUND
 Approximately 700,000 cardiac arrests per year
 Survival to hospital discharge presently
approximately 5-10%
 Survival is double or triple if Bystander CPR
vital interven
 Survival can be >60% if Early resuscitation and
prompt defibrillation interven (within 1-2
minutes)
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
DEFINITIONS
 CARDIAC ARREST: Abrupt cessation
of cardiac pump function which may
be reversible by a rapid intervention
but will lead to DEATH in its absence.
 DEATH: Irreversible cessation of all
biologic functions

CHAIN OF SURVIVAL

OBJECTIVES
Students should be able to demonstrate:
 How to assess the collapsed victim
 How to perform chest compression and rescue breathing
 How to place an unconscious breathing victim in the recovery position.

HOW TO CHECK FOR
BREATHING
 Look for breathing
 Chest rise
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
HOW TO CHECK
CIRCULATION/PULSE
 Maintain a head tilt with one hand on the victim”s
forehead.
 Locate the trachea with 2 or 3 fingers of the other hand
 Slide these fingers where u can feel the carotid pulse
(in groove b/w trachea & sternocliedomastoid)
 Palpate for atleast 5 seconds and no more than 10
seconds.
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
HOW TO GIVE COMPRESSIONS
 Make sure the victim is lying on his back
 Put the heel of one hand on the center of the victim’s
bare chest between the nipples.
 Put the heel of your other hand on the top of the first
hand
 Straighten your arms and position your shoulders
directly over your hands.
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
DO’s of High quality CPR
 Perform chest compressions at a rate of 100-120/min
 Compress to a depth of at least 2 inches (5 cm)
 Allow full recoil after each compression
 Minimize pauses in compressions
 Ventilate adequately (2 breaths after 30 compressions,
each breath delivered over 1 second, each causing chest
rise)
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
DON’Ts of HIGH QUALITY CPR
 Compress at a rate slower than 100/min or faster than
120/min
 Compress to a depth of less than 2 inches (5 cm) or
greater than 2.4 inches (6 cm)
 Lean on the chest between compressions
 Interrupt compressions for greater than 10 seconds
 Provide excessive ventilation (ie, too many breaths or
breaths with excessive force)
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
OPEN AIRWAY
Head tilt, chin lift + jaw thrust
- healthcare professionals.
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
Open airway
 Head tilt chin lift .
 Place one hand over the forehead and tilt the head
back.
 Remove any foregin body from the mouth.
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
DEFIBRILLATION
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
Call 112
Approach safely
Check response
Shout for help
Open airway
Check breathing
Attach AED
Follow voice prompts
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
AUTOMATED EXTERNAL
DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)
 Some AEDs will
automatically switch
themselves on when
the lid is opened
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
ATTACH PADS TO
CASUALTY’S BARE CHEST
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
ANALYSING RHYTHM
DO NOT TOUCH VICTIM
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
SHOCK INDICATED
 Stand clear
 Deliver shock
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
SHOCK DELIVERED
FOLLOW AED INSTRUCTIONS
30 2
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
NO SHOCK ADVISED
FOLLOW AED INSTRUCTIONS
30 2
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
IF VICTIM STARTS TO BREATHE
NORMALLY PLACE IN RECOVERY
POSITION
EuropeanResuscitationCouncil
CONTINUE RESUSCITATION UNTIL
 Qualified help arrives and takes over
 The victim starts breathing normally
 Rescuer becomes exhausted
