Poe s Psychology In The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Alan Poe s writing is centered primarily on the psyche and Freudian beliefs. The Freudians
would call his stories of horror expressions of anxiety, which to them always has a sexual
connotation. It is true that Poe s passions were of his mind. One of his most famous poems, The
Raven, is a perfect example of that. The Ravenby Poe is a psychological study into the depths of his
despair primarily driven by the death of his loved ones, financial troubles he had in his adult life,
and his mental illness.
Edgar Allan Poe grew up in a poor family due to his parents being small actors in a local theater in
Boston. His father was said to be a victim of consumption which Edgar later inherited from him
in life, and this is one of the things that eventually led to the downfall of his career as well as his
life. His mother however, was a beautiful and talented woman, whom he looked up to and took
pride in. It s from her that he inherited the artistic ability, and was made to be very fond of
drawing and writing stories. As an adolescent, both his parents died of disease and starvation, and
the death of his mother took a bad toll on him.
Soon after her death, the theater where she so often performed burned down due to a large fire. His
mother s death, and the sight of the burning theater where his beautiful mother had so often graced
the stage, must have had a powerful effect upon the dawning imagination of young Edgar, so that
even at this early age there appeared to him the

Aboriginal Land Rights within Australia Essay
Terra Nullius was once apparent in Australian society, but has now been nullified with the turn of
the century. With the political changes in our society, and the apology to Indigenous Australians,
society is now witnessing an increase in aboriginals gaining a voice in today s society. Described
by Pat Dodson (2006) as a seminal moment in Australias history, Rudd s apology was expressed in
the true spirit of reconciliation opening a new chapter in the history of Australia. Considerable
debate has arisen within society as to whether aboriginals have a right to land that is of cultural
significance and whether current land owners will be able to keep their land.
An issue facing society is whether legislation in place is sufficient in ... Show more content on

Case by case indigenous Australians begin to gain access to the land that was taken from them.
Contentious debate continues to rage in present society opening a floodgate of ethical issues
which can have detrimental effects on all parties involved. Ethics vary from each individual and
tend to stem from their own belief systems external to that person (Dosen, Harris, Brock, Imariso
and Smith 2007:336). These ethics give rise to conflicting arguments in present society. 50 years
ago, Indigenous Australians were not entitled to enter a bar, cafe, swimming pool, or a cinema, if
that deprivation of basic rights wasn t enough; they then took children from their mothers later on
known as the stolen generation (www.creativespirits.2008). The stolen generation, estimated at
over 100,000 children were taken from their homes and placed in missions, reserves or
dormitories (www.creativespirits.2008). I feel our childhood has been taken away from us and it
has left a big hole in our lives an Indigenous Australian part of the stolen generation
(www.creativespirtis.2008). The loss of ones culture and identity was deemed worse then being
poor and living in sub standard living with their families.

Critical Narrative And Story Telling Style
English 2201 helped me discover not only myself as a writer, but allowed me to go more in
depth with learning how to write in the field of my intended discipline. This is the first specific
English class I have taken that focused on the style of writing I will need to be familiar in the
future with. Because of that fact, I defiantly enjoyed this class. I feel like my knowledge and ability
to navigate the writingtechniques of my major have improved and my in text citations skills have
improved greatly. Overall this course opened my eyes to the many different styles there are in the
field of Communications, which is my intended field of study, and how to use these styles
correctly and efficiently. I learned an array of new things with every paperand project we
participated in. Our first project was a critical narrative styled paper. Personally when it comes
to writing, I prefer the critical narrative and story telling style because I enjoy putting my
creative mind to work. It is easier for me to write down exactly what I am thinking, rather than
writing research papers with sources to go off of. So, I extremely enjoyed the first project. The
main element I can take away from writing the Category 1: Writing in the Field assignment was
how to conduct a proper interview. I interviewed Marc Morriston, who is the head of marketing at
WNCT News here in Greenville. I conducted the interview based off of what we learned in class
and I ended up making connections that I can use in

Compare And Contrast Samurai And Knight
The samurai and knight both were fearless and both had fascinating facts about what they did and
who they were. Both were different and each had their own ways of teaching their codes, wearing
different types of armor, and different techniques of training. Both the samurai and Knight had
similarities in all of these facts for example in their training they both started off as a child. As they
trained and grew stronger they both were eventually promoted to become a knightor a samuraiand
studied their religion. Some differences between the two are that the child is to become a samurai
by being promoted in a ceremony called genpuku. The knights become knights by being a squire
and being worthy as a knight by showing their masters they were

Optional Humility Analysis
The three types of humility according to Schein are basic humility, optional humility and here and
now humility. Basic humility is when society dictates that people born into a class structure are
due a certain amount of respect. An example of this would be how we deal with our boss s
families. Optional humility is when one achieves their status through their actions and hard work.
Most of the leaders in my organization are where they are today because they have worked hard to
get there. We treat them with respect not only because of the job, but also because of their hard
work. Here and now humility is the type of humility I think we deal with the most often. One of the
gentlemen that I work with from another department that I work

Compare And Contrast Meteor And The Phoenix By John Wyndham
The short stories Meteor and The Phoenix both convey the theme of social downfall. In each of the
stories, arrogance causes the character s downfall.
Meteor by John Wyndham is a good example, how misunderstanding and a lack of communication
can lead to social downfall.
Both sides, the humans and aliens, wonder if it is too much we ask simply to live, to work, and
to build, in peace... (page 12, Onns Diary). But still, although both sides expect to live in peace,
they do not act peacefully. The alien leader kills a cat and a dog, because they think the creatures
are monsters. On the other side, the humans kill the aliens, just because they do not really know, if
the aliens might be dangerous. Therefore, they sent a cloud of insect killer ... Show more content on

Indeed, he dies, because of the payments for his birds. He had the finest aviary (...), so well laid
out that both hummingbirds and snow buntings had a climate that suited them perfectly (page
1). Mr. Poldero on the other hand, only cares for the money, the phoenix brings and even tries to
kill it, just because of the money. Daily he stationed himself in front of the cage to jeer at the
bird and abuse it (page 2). Because of this abuse of the bird, the cage might seem like injustice to
the reader. The phoenix was moved to a smaller cage (page 2) and tortured by Mr. Poldero, until it
got sick. Mr. Poldero s greed is shown, as one day the phoenix began turning over the straw (page
3), all that Mr. Poldero does, is to sign film contracts.
In both of the stories, the characters ignorance leads to the death of many living creatures, like the
aliens in Meteor and the spectators in The Phoenix . Both authors use symbolism to point the reader
towards this theme.
In The Phoenix , though, there is justice in the end, but in Meteor there is no justice, as the aliens
die and neither of the sides recognizes, what they have done.
To conclude, the stories have similar meanings, as in both arrogance leads to social downfall and
the stories use similar ways to lead the reader to this conclusion. However, the stories have very
different themes and use different symbols to achieve the same

Dynamic Duel
The Dynamic Duel According to U.S Department of Commerce, in 2008 a household of 2
combine incomes was increasingly better and well of that than a 1 household income.
Consequently, income inequalities before 1950 was just as bad as it is now. In 2008, a married
couple s median income consisted approximately around 50,303, while a single parent s median
income was 4 percent less of their counterparts. It is important to note that two parent household
income matter as much as they used to. Together, a two parent household income can provide an
opportunity to be stress free from the burden of paying bills and having enough money left over
for the rest of the week, also, a two parent household income allows for the chance to put money
into a saving account, and lastly, a two parent household income creates an environment where both
parents can spend more time with their children. Two parent household income decreases the
burden of stressing about the bills being paid on time and they experience a relief in having to find

Whenever a second source of income is presented into the equation, it allows for an increased in
savings. Moreover, their combined income overcompensates for the accrued expenses, which then
they can establish how much of their income can be carried over to their savings account.
Additionally, a combined income allows for an opportunity to purchase a home and one important
reason behind it is the addition of wife s earnings to family income (Hanson and Ooms, 624),
which generated an increase number of home ownership, especially in young families below the
age of 35 during the 1980s. Unfortunately, for lower class single parent households owning a
home was much more difficult and a great deal is because they don t generate enough income to be

Elizabeth Holmes Research Paper
How can you be the youngest American self made billionaire and a college drop out? Thirty year
old Elizabeth Holmes accomplished this with her company Theranos. I think a lot of young
people have incredible ideas and incredible insights, but sometimes they wait before they go to
give their life something, she said, what I did was just to start a little earlier (Holmes). Elizabeth
dropped out of Stanford University at the age of 19 and cashed the funds for her tuition to start
her company. Her company took the $76 billion industry in laboratory diagnostics head on. This
industry hasn t changed since the modern clinical laboratory emerged in the 1960 s. Elizabeth s
company wants to use a pinprick of blood in a container smaller than a dime to do 50 plus blood
diagnostics in one. This means no vials of blood, no tourniquets and less time than the traditional
test time. All the things the company is trying to create are amazing. These advancements will not

But the idea didn t work out, they didn t have enough time to be ready for Walgreen s rollout. It

been struck with many allegations that their tests are inaccurate. They are being investigated by

devices that worked. Theranos was a gigantic fraud; this doesn t mean that they committed fraud.

How Would A Trade Union Impact On My Family
The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers has had an
immense impact on my life. My father has been part of this union for over twenty years and it has
been very important for my family. This union has not only helped my family, but it has also made
my childhood very enjoyable with all of the events that are hosted for the families of union
members. The union has hosted an annual Christmasparty that was welcome for my familyto attend,
it has picnics in the summer for all to enjoy, and most importantly, the union has helped my family
financially.
There were many events hosted by the union every year and the annual union Christmas party
that was held for all union members was my favourite one to attend, especially as a child. Every
Christmas, I would look forward to this party because I loved the presents I received and taking
pictures with Santa, which was my favourite thing to do during the Christmas season. The gifts

Gang Prevention Programs And Their Effectiveness
I.Overview of the topic/problem statement
My topic is to discover gang prevention programs and their effectiveness. The prevention programs
being discussed are the G.R.E.A.T. program and the Comprehensive Anti Gang Initiative (CAGI).
The problem is that these prevention methods are not effective in alternatives to gang life. The
alternatives could include family, protection, and these support that gangs give to their members. If
these programs are not successful in offering these alternatives then the program will not be as
effective. My goal was to test these programs by using a new classification of gang control
strategies. This topic is important in Social Work because gang prevention can saved lives by

Before the revision of the G.R.E.A.T. program the program evaluation was not good (Esbensen,
F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). Finn Aage
Esbensen (2011), did a study on G.R.E.A.T. students versus Non G.R.E.A.T. students to monitor
their attitudes and whether the behavioral goals were achieved (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D.,
Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). The differences the
G.R.E.A.T. students showed were lower levels of victimization and risk seeking tendencies, more
prosocial peers, more negative views about gangs, and more positive views of law enforcement
(Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011).
Furthermore, there were no differences between G.R.E.A.T. and non G.R.E.A.T. students in levels
of delinquency, violence, or gang membership (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A.,
Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). . Importantly, the five significant differences did not
emerge until 3 or 4 years after program exposure; the earlier analyses conducted just 2 years post
program revealed no differences at all between the experimental and comparison groups (Esbensen,
F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). The
significant 3 and 4 year results support lagged

The Idea Of Concealed Carry Arms Essay
The idea of Concealed Carry arms at universities is a controversial topic for both students and
faculty on whether guns should be allowed or banned on campuses throughout the United States.
The idea of Concealed Carry Arms is a controversial topic because it represents both protection
and fear as no one knows who has a weapon, whether they have it legally or even if they know
how to use it properly and safely. Also, nobody knows of someone else s intentions with Concealed
Carry Arms as they could use that gun for protection or murder. The idea of allowing Concealed
Carry Arms on campus is a controversial topic that could affect universities and campuses in the
United States. The University of Toledo has had one incident this year with guns on campus. At
the beginning of the semester a person that was believed to be another student pulled a gun on
another student and demanded the victim s car keys. When the victim refused, the gunmen fired
a shot at the ground then ran. This brings up the debate of whether people can be trusted to have
Concealed Carry Arms on campus or not. Such as the gunmen earlier this semester. The United
States has also seen Problems at other schools with guns and violence such as the Virginia Tech
incident back in April of 2007 that left 32 victims as well as the shooter dead (Virginia Tech Para.
2). The shooter was a Korean student named Seung Hui Cho who was a senior who was majoring

The Lindsay family is a total of five: Chris, Kristy, Christopher, Gabrielle, and Zoi. They have faced
several deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, the father, Chris, has recently arrived back to
his family, and unfortunately found out he has posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a
disorder that develops when people have experienced a traumatic event. Mr. Lindsay (2017)
stated, I sometimes relive the moments that my friends have passed right in front of me. While
sitting there listening, it was heartbreaking. In the life of someone with PTSD, they tend to be on
edge quite a bit. Chris has left birthday parties immediately because a balloon popped. Also, when
his children are being really loud he calmly tells them to settle down, and sits out side until he is
ready to return. Although he has coped efficiently with this disorder, many PTSD victims cope
with their disorder with alcohol, drugs, and abuse. However, I will say that this family has coped
really well with this situation. Also, another big difference is that they have a smaller family than
mine, but they want it to grow. So, therefore, there are a lot of differences between the Lindsay

Private Child Support Essay
Private child support collection services become necessary in recent years. They are necessary
because of the many families that have had to go without court ordered child support payments.
The problem is that many parents fail to pay their child support payments on a regular basis.
These deadbeat parents may also take a variety of steps to get out of their financial responsibilities.
Those steps can make it difficult for government agencies to collect. The collection methods used
by the state may include placing liens on property, but these liens are not always effective. You Can

That said, interstate collections may not be easy for a state child support agency. A private
collection company with experience in interstate collections may be able to help. A Private
collection Agency Can Help Even if Child is Emancipated Emancipation can make it difficult for a
government agency to collect unpaid child support. For instance, some states may not collect child
support in a case with an emancipated child. In cases with emancipated children, the United States
Office of Child Enforcement says that states are not under any obligation to collect in response to
another state s request. However, most states have liberal statutes of limitation. The statutes of
limitation allow a private collection service to be effective where a government agency would not
be. Private Collection Companies Have Lighter Case Loads One reason that government agencies
are unsuccessful has to do with the number of cases they have. Government child support agencies
often struggle to deal with a high caseload. The caseload of private collection companies is
comparatively low. The result is that private child support enforcement services are often able to
spend more time on their clients cases. The extra time means that they can solve tougher

However, mammograms can have their limitations. A mammogram will miss some cancers, and it

The purpose of having a screening mammography is to identify small breast cancer. The use of
film mammography can be very hard to recognize breast cancer in younger women and women
that may have dense breast tissue. This is because the women normal breast tissue have a density
of carcinoma. It very difficult to tell which is normal and which could be carcinoma. There is an
advantage to the film mammography where the contrast image of the breast can be modified and
could allow the differences in the detection of the tissues.
According to the case study in the text it states that sixty six percent of all women and fifty one
percent of women under age of fifty who has breast cancer will be identified by having a screening
test (Fleming, 2008). From my research I found that having a
screening mammography is a very valuable tool in the detection of breast cancer especially if it
is caught early in the stages to improve the survival rate. For women who get a screening after
age the of fifty have a good chance of reducing the risk of death of breast cancer from twenty five

events that occurred during World War II in a small western coastal city of France in June of
1940. After allied forces had been pushed back from Belgium through Germanies ferocious
blitzkrieg attacks, the French and British armies were split apart. Over three hundred thousand
men were left trapped in this small western corridor of France, the outlook looked bleak. As
German troops quickly approached the forces trapped on the beach, many expected the panzer

In the movie we notice the big ships of the Royal Navy having troubles entering the shallow
harbor, a major problem for the evacuation. Only a few medic ships were able to make it to shore
to help only a handful of the wounded soldiers. As accurately depicted in the film, volunteer
stretcher bearers were used to load the medic ships as so many men were still left wounded and
stranded on the beach. Just like the film some of the men saw this as there way out of the death
trap. Veteran Garth Wright has a firsthand account of this occurring, They asked for volunteer

troops had built to take them out to rescuing ships. I took him on board to a makeshift ward they
had and went to leave, but the skipper said I could stay on board. I could not believe my luck.
Luckily for him he got to stay on the ship as the characters in the movie were not as lucky and
had to hide underneath the makeshift pier. One thing I noticed in the movie is the pier looks
professionally built and doesn t depict that the pier was actually built by soldiers while under fire,
which is quite impressive. The movie then goes away from the beach to show the perspective from

Bill probably had rent to pay, family to feed, and food to buy. Yet, King stole that away from him

life is an endless cycle where the youth will beat and replace the elderly. The once prideful and

Network Administrator Has Higher Level Of Control
LAN stands for Local Area Network. It is a type of network that covers a greater distance and it
interconnects computers and devices either wired or wireless. LAN is mainly used in private
organisations such as college or university. More or less everyone uses wireless router at home
these days and the user is able to connect between 5 10 devices wirelessly. The user can share the
broadband or the connection with ADSL by using Ethernet cables. Smaller LANs can connect at
least 2 3 computers using one cable. It also depends on the size of the organisation. Smaller
LANs are easier to manage. The users need to be careful when using larger LANs and need to
make sure that the network within it is transmitted efficiently. The user can increase the number
of computers connected by using routers and switches. This ensures that the network
administrator has higher level of control over the network. IEEE 802.3 is the wired Ethernet
used by LAN and therefore it is related to LAN. The set up cost for LAN is relatively cheap.

RAY RICE CASE STUDY
On September 8th 2014 NFL team, Baltimore Ravens terminated Ray Rice s contract after he was
captured via elevator surveillance assaulting his then fiancГ©e, now wife in February. The video
outraged the nation and the public questioned NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell s knowledge of
the entire situation. In turn, the NFL gave him the light punishment of a two game suspension.
Many people argued that although Goodell previously issued much heavier fines for issues such as
substance abuse (Elliot, 2014). Once the story reached the light, the social media outrage was

He should also explain that the Ravens and the NFL as a whole organization would be moving
forward to put in place domestic policy that all players must adhere to in order to play in the
league. The new policy is the result of numerous meetings over several months among active and
inactive players, and advocates for sexual assault and domestic violence (NFL, 2014).
The new policy lays out the disciplinary actions to be taken where there is an incident that needs to
be investigated including: counseling for the victims and violators, independent investigators, and a
complete list of forbidden conduct (NFL, 2014). Bisciotti can close the letter by stating that they

Education of Girl Child
I ask you all so earnestly to open girl s schools in every village and try to uplift them. If the
Conditions of women are raised, then their children will, by their noble actions, glorify the name of
the Country. Swami Vivekananda
Today s girl child will be the mother of tomorrow. As a mother she can give her child a sound
nursing and capable upbringing. A womanhas the maximum impact on the social, economical
decisions making in the family generally. At micro level, educated woman help in making the whole

For the success of a person whether man or woman, education plays an important role. Education
for the girls is more important as she not only builds the home but all routine responsibilities are
taken care of by her. An educated woman not only helps in nourishing the family in a better way
but can also help in earning. Rightly said that God made the mother because He could not be
present every where. One could judge the degree of civilization of a country by the social and
political position of its women Charles Fourier
Education for a girl child means making the next generation well educated, full of virtues, free
from the useless superstitions, confident and capable to do something good for the family, for the
society and for the country as a whole. The present day girl is the mother of tomorrow. Give me
good mothers and I will give you a great nation Napoleon
She is the most crucial and reverend entity. She must be given all the necessary education. Ignoring
her, keeping her illiterate means we are creating an illiterate and ignorant generation. So it is
perfectly true that educating a girl child means educating a family.Development cannot be

Media Controls Your Mind
Media has an affect on the popular culture more than most people think. It is simply everywhere
you go and unavoidable. So either way you look at it, the mass media occurs in a person s life
on a daily basis. Which has a severe effect on the choices you make and the morals you live by.
One cannot trust everything they see on TV either. Most commercials you would see today are
overly exaggerated just to persuade consumers into buying the product. For example, in the 1930 s
America s first drug czar Harry J. Anslinger, began one of the world s greatest public relations
campaigns just to demoralize marijuana by telling apparent lies to society and persuading them to
believe it. Such as that marijuana is more harmful to the body than... Show more content on

Using the devil s image to promote anti marijuana beliefs in a mostly Christian denominated
country, it is bound to turn heads and make people question it. With all this being said, choosing
one side is mainly based on you and your families morals and what you believe in. But we can all
agree that the media should have the obligation in to telling us truthful information and not far
fetched claims. Living in the 1930 s, television was very new, and people that actually owned a
television set believed almost everything they saw on it. So whatever the advertisements were
promoting, it could easily persuade someone into believing their claim. The lack of technology that
society had at the time made people a lot more gullible then today. Maybe the mass media did not
realize that what is shown to the popular culture on a daily basis could be so influential no matter
how untruthful the advertisements might be. It is not fair for the government to know more
information than society. So to be able to instill truthfulness the mass media cannot promote
exaggerated claims like the one I mentioned earlier. Once an advertisement is out there, there is no
getting it back. The media should be responsible for promoting truthful claims to society so that we

Sarah Vowell Analysis
For over a decade I ve considered Sarah Vowell to be one of my favorite authors due to a shared
passion for history and my enjoyment of what Duffy considers to be an idiosyncratic voice (
Thus always to tyrants ). Though being most famous for lending her voice to the character
Violet from the movie The Incredibles , Vowell is fairly well known for her work with public
radio and, of course, her books (Handy, Assassination Vacation : Dead Presidents ). However,
while I m charmed by her oddball fascination with presidential assassination and anecdotes from
the annals of American history I m aware others are not and may be far more critical. Though both
Duffy and Handy are complimentary neither hold back in their reviews of Sarah Vowell s book

Taking a Look at Malaria
Proposed Disease: Malaria
What is malaria?
What exactly is malaria? Malaria is a disease caused by certain mosquitoes passing on parasites
when feeding on people. The most common malaria parasite and is known to be the deadliest is
plasmodium falciparum (figure 1). Once this parasite has enters the body, it takes a few weeks
before it multiply into thousands and infects red blood cells. According to Malaria No More, it is
also known that plasmodium falciparum is carried and transmitted by only female anopheles
mosquito and feed on people between the time of 9pm to 5am (Malaria No More).
According to Malariasymptons.org, once a person is infected with malaria or the parasite
plasmodium falciparum, they will experience fever like sickness. The symptoms include fever,
sweats, shaking chills, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
(malariasymptoms.org). If malaria is not treated right away, it can lead to serious health issues for
the person who is infected. It may eventually lead to kidney failure, seizures, mental confusion,
coma, bleeding due to blood clots and even death (malaria symptoms.org).
Malaria parasites were first founded in mosquitoes who were reserved in amber and was
approximately 30 million years old. It was known that parasites originated from Africa and from
those who caught the parasites from chimpanzees and gorillas. One of the earliest protections from
malaria were the Egyptians using large amounts of garlic and using bed

Outsiders In The Outsider
Things are rough all over. (Hinton 35) Ponyboy Curtis says this in the book The Outsiders by
S.E. Hinton. An outsider is someone who is different or doesn t fit in in a certain way, which is
why Hinton never emphasizes who the outsiders are; readers can interpret this book and the
outsiders in their own way because Hinton proves that everyone is an outsider in their own
manner. While it can be argued that every character is an outsider, the main outsiders in this
book are Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Cherry Valance. In a neighborhood of Greasers and
Socs, Ponyboy Curtis is a part of a gang on the greaser side. This gang consists of Ponyboy,
obviously, Johnny Johnnycake Cade, Darrel Darry Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Keith Two Bit

The Life Of Dorothy Wordsworth And John Keats
During the eighteenth century, a style of writing called romanticism that challenged societal norms
began to emerge. It worked against the Age of Enlightenment and encouraged emotional, visual,
and knowledge as the reservoir for influence. From this time six important authors surfaced:
William Blake, William Wordsworth
, Percy Shelley, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Byron, and John
Keats. Included in this list should be Dorothy Wordsworth and Mary Wollstonecraft. The eighteenth
century produce material that shattered the fundamental s of society.
On Christmas day in 1771, Dorothy Wordsworth was born. When her mother passed away seven
years later, young Dorothy was shuffled from one relative to another. Even though her brothers
received an education and she didn t, William willingly taught her to read and write. While Dorothy
Wordsworth s journals weren t meant to see the eyes of the public, scholars published her writings.
The passages are woven together with picturesque details and observations of nature with the love
of her brother, William. The text challenges the notation that simplistic and common things are
boring and not extraordinary. On January 31, 1798, Dorothy wrote, When we left home the moon
immensely large, the sky scattered over with clouds. These soon closed in, contracting the
dimensions of the moon without concealing her. The sound of the pattering shower, and the gusts
of wind, very grand. Left the wood when nothing remained of the storm but the driving wind,

Consequences Of Control
The Consequences of Controlling Others
Mandy Hale once said, The only keeper of happiness is you. Stop giving people power to control
your smile, your worth and your attitude. The one shot to live your life enjoyably, is to be able to
break free from the control of others. But countless people find is tough to personally control and
live their lives to the fullest. This does not just result in a change in personality, but a change in the
society. When people allow themselves to be controlled by others, the consequences can be
devastating. One way these controlling natures can result in a negative consequence is that people
cannot display their true selves. Connie Schultz writes about her feelings as a child: I grew up
surrounded by children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing this, the child gains more courage to stand up. In the same way, to stand up to others is
having the courage to deep down in their heart. According to Jessica, a student of Charleston,
Mississippi High school, the horrors Connie were facing were negligible: I started hanging out with
Calvin; and my parents threatened me and threatened me and threatened me (Prom Night in
Mississippi n.pag.). It is unacceptable for these controlling parents to employ their children to do
what they want. But, threatening a child to do what you want is repugnant landing far beyond
unacceptable demeanor. As a matter of fact, inviting yourself into others lives in order to control
them is ghastly, too. Aunt Alexandra, in the book To Kill a Mockingbird, does just this: We
decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence. It won t be many years,
Jean Louise, before you become interested in clothes and boys (Lee 170). Aunt Alexandra is a

meet with Atticus values and beliefs. In other words, Aunt Alexandra does not like how Atticus is
raising Scout and Jem. As a result,

Lincoln Racist Dbq
Racism is the belief of superiority of a certain race which often leads to discrimination towards
other people. Lincoln was a racist because of his ideology. According to Document B, Lincoln was
in favor of the race to which I belong, having the superior position . Since Lincoln believed that he,
the white race, was better and superior to the Negroes, this proves that he is racist because of his
ideology. In addition, Lincoln was a racist because of his words. In Document C and D, Lincoln
called the Negroes heathism , barbarian , creatures . By using such demeaning and dehumanizing
words, Lincoln puts down the Negroes, which establishes himself as the better race. However,
some may argue that Lincoln was not a racist. In Document A, Lincoln believed that the Negro
was born his equal and that no human law can deprive him of these rights . By thinking that he is
equal to Negroes, it demonstrates that he does not think lowly of them. Although Lincoln stated
that the Negro is his equal, it does not hide the fact that he believes that the white race is more

Biological Diversity
Effects of Loss of Biological Diversity
As the loss of biological diversity or biodiversity continues to increase at unprecedented rates, it
leaves a long lasting effect on the environment of the planet Earth. Such effects are so threatening
that they can claim human lives in the near future.
Humans are clearing forests (deforestation) to occupy more land to urbanise more areas. Thus, as
humans continue to exploit the habitat of animals and plants for their own selfish needs, they harm
the entire environment of the earth. The deforestation has resulted in a variety of animals, which
dwell in that area, to leave the habitat. This is quite alarming as it could result in the loss of those
species diversity in the future.
The precious natural resources of the green earth are excessively exploited by humans. This
includes overharvesting animals to the extent that these species become extinct. It also includes
overconsumption of natural resources such as timber and fossil fuel which take years to regenerate.
This is a direct threat to biodiversity.
Humans pollute the environment in every way they can. They pollute the air with harmful
pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and nitrogen
oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles. These greenhouse gases are, in turn, destroying
the ozone layer. The ozone layer reflects the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. As this layer is

Social Constructivist Leadership
Abstract
The Making of a Leader: A Phenomenological Study of the Lived Experiences of Women Who
Have Served as President at U.S. Colleges and Universities
Katrina L. Jackson, Ed.D.
Drexel University, May 2015
Chairperson: Kathy D. Geller
Women in the position of president at U.S. colleges and universities have defied the odds. Since the
1980s, the number of women presidents in colleges and universities has grown, increasing from
9.5% in 1986 to only 26.0% in 2011. Although the percentage of women presidents of these
institutions has increased, there is still an underrepresentation of women in the role of president

Social constructivism is a worldview that argues that the nature of reality is based on the individual
and his or her beliefs and experiences. Gergen (1985) stated, From the constructionist position the
process of understanding is not automatically driven by the forces of nature, but is the result of an
active, cooperative enterprise of persons in relationship (p. 267). This perspective acknowledges
historical and cultural biases as primary influences on the construction of an individual s worldview
and suggests that Descriptions and explanations of the world themselves constitute forms of social
action (Gergen, 1985, pp. 267 268). As a social constructivist, I recognize that when people tell
stories of their lived experiences, certain phrases may be expressed through body movements, facial
expressions, and gestures, and these actions further illuminate what the individual is
communicating (Gergen, 1985). Using the social constructivist paradigm helps the researcher better
understand the world in which each individual participant

Who Is David Adjaye Sunken House
Sunken House Analysis
One of the things that most architects strive to achieve in their work is to make it stand out and
really add to its location s surroundings. This was definitely accomplished by David Adjaye in his
Sunken House project. In 2007, Adjaye designed a house for photographer Ed Reeve which is why
today it is also called Ed s Shed. However, the Sunken House is also a very deserving name. On the
lot there was a space already dug out for a basement foundation, however Adjaye had no intentions
of including some traditional basement. Instead, he used the lowered area to make a hidden first

Because of the simple box style he uses, most all of the walls were constructed off site and then

that even the way something comes together can be part of design or architecture. Ultimately the
end result or final product can reflect to the process and the journey made to get to it, which is just
another outstanding design reflected in Adjaye s project.
In conclusion there are many innovative or modernized design styles of Adjaye in this Sunken

Research in Educational Psychology Assignment
Topic
There are numerous motivational theories that have been discussed and tested. Different students
unknowingly, or sometimes knowingly, utilize different theories since no two students are alike.
Many teachers acknowledge that different students are motivated by different things, whether it be
intrinsic extrinsic, self efficacy or interest. Not only can gender and age differences affect
motivation, but the student s self efficacy and level of goal setting also affect the student s
motivation. As a teacher, it has been noted that certain students are motivated to do certain tasks
while others are not. In order to learn, students need to be motivated. One of the most difficult
challenges of teaching is fighting the battle of motivating the students, which then leads to
supporting them and helping them motivate themselves.
Textbook Summary
The textbook definition for motivation is the inner state that energizes, directs, and sustains
behavior. (Ormrod, 2015, p. 186) It goes on to state that humans usually tend to work with a
purpose. Motivation not only influences the activities that learners choose, but it also affects the
degree to which they engage in those activities (Ormrod, 2015, p. 186). While teachers do play a
big part in motivating students, motivation also has to come from within the students. In order for
students to feel motivated, they must have certain primary

The Memory Of A Memory Essay
Recalling a memory seems like a simple task but are you actually depicting the events how they
actually happened? Understanding the process our minds undergo during memory recall has
helped greatly in legal cases involving an eyewitness. People generally believe that an eyewitness
report provides completely reliable evidence to a criminal case. However, Elizabeth Loftus of the
University of Washington has found that when an individual recalls a memoryit is not described
completely as it occurred but is reconstructed using other information as well. Loftus is a leading
researcher in the memory field of psychology. In this experimental study she proposed that the
manner in which a questionis asked influences the individual s answer. Prior to researchers like
Loftus legal cases often came down to a point of the finger from an eyewitness; who consciously
or not was not always reliable. Due to this unreliability Loftus created four experimental methods
in relation to typical eyewitness cases in order to test her theoretical proposition. In the initial
study, 150 subjects were shown a video of a five car chain reaction accident that occurred when a
car (Car A) drove through a stop sign into oncoming traffic. When the film finished the individuals
filled out ten questions. One half of the group s first question was How fast was Car A going when
it ran the stop sign? The remaining individuals first question was How fast was Car A going when it

Nonverbal Communication In Everybody Loves Raymond
The television show Everybody Loves Raymond is about the comical and typical everyday life
of Ray Romano. Ray is a successful sports writer with interests of an average American male in
sports, golf, and work and has a beautiful family with his loving wife, Debra. However, the twist
is that Ray s overprotective mother Marie and demanding father Frank along with his older
brother Robert who is envious of Ray all live across the street. As a result, Ray s seemingly
normal life is always full of drama and liveliness. In the episode Baggage, because Ray and Debra
are returning from a short vacation exhausted, they decide to leave their suitcase unpacked at the
bottom of the stairs (Everybody Loves Raymond). After a couple of days, Ray notices... Show more

Behavioral flexibility involves knowing and using a number of different behaviors to achieve
appropriate communication (O Hair et al. 16). At the same time, Ray returns home early after
realizing how silly their fight over the suitcase is. Ray and Debra engage in using mature
behavior and communication to handle the situation, rather than using nonverbal and negative
communication, to end their argument. Consequently, since Ray and Debra are husband and
wife, they begin to show their affiliation to one another. Affiliation can be described as the
feeling of connectedness you have with others (O Hair et al. 6). Furthermore, Ray and Debra
use haptics or the use of touch to send messages when they nonverbally interact by hugging each
other (O Hair et al. 111). More specifically, this is also an example of love intimacy touch which
shows example include embracing and caressing (O Hair et al. 112). Love intimacy touch is
generally used by two very close romantical partners or family members to express affection. In
this case, because Ray and Debra reconcile with one another, their relationship grows stronger and
their affections toward one another grow. Therefore, Ray and Debra go from arguing about the
suitcase to using the symbol to as means to grow closer to one another and even leads to Ray
suggesting that they should have coming home action

C. H. Mason Holiness Movement
C.H. Mason and the Church Of God in Christ Although there were many Pentecostal churches that
arose from the Holiness movement in the latter part of the Nineteenth century few are as unique
and successful as the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.). The church arose as a predominantly
Black church in the Jim Crow era south and yet it was interracial and even ordained White
ministers. These are just a few of the distinctive traits of what would become the largest Pentecostal
church in America. To properly discuss the history of the church one has to research the background
of the Holiness movement and then the founder of the denomination C.H. Mason. The Holiness
movement began as a move toward the Second Blessing as taught by John Wesley... Show more

The church held to the Holiness emphasis on holiness in life as proof of entire sanctification,
subsequent to justification, and evidence of the Spirit by speaking in tongues. They remained
Trinitarian after the oneness controversy spread across other Pentecostal camps. Repentance is
highly stressed as a proof of salvation. Divine healing is believed as a normal in the new Spirit
filled life. One of the remainders of Calvinism is the absolute necessity of holiness before
salvation. All of the other normal Protestant sacraments of the church are also adhered. It did
and continues to utilize a very effective Episcopalian form of church government that allowed
such monstrous growths throughout the years despite of numerous divisions. One particular of
the church and Mason was its pacifist stance. Mason was once jailed after forbidding members
to participate in World War I; he was released the next day after a storm blew the roof of the jail.
The pacifist view was so serious that the FBI kept a file on Mason. The pride of the church was
its unrelenting stance on racial unity during some of America s darkest days. Mason once said The
church is like the eye... it has a little white and a little black without both it can t see. This spirit has
clearly carried the denomination throughout the years! (Mead 57)(Burgess 205)(Synan

South Korea Suicide
The prominent education frenzy in South Korea places students in a high stress environment which
can contribute to the risk for suicide ideation. The average school day in South Korea lasts eight to
nine hours, which is then followed by cram school and multiple hours dedicated to studying. An
anonymous student, quoted by BBC News, described her day as the following:
She rises at 6.30am, is at school by 8am, finishes at 4pm, (or 5pm if she has a club), then pops
back home to eat. She then takes a bus to her second school shift of the day, at a private crammer
or hagwon, where she has lessons from 6pm until 9pm. She spends another two hours in what she
calls self study back at school, before arriving home after 11pm. She goes to bed at 2am, and rises

In an article for the Economist by S. C., the author summarizes that the purpose of the exam is to
provide an analogous view of students abilities that universities or future employers can easily
reference. However, the fundamental problem with this method is that the test is only empirical if
students study for the same amount of time, otherwise those who study the most have an advantage
going into the test. With this knowledge in mind, students become overly competitive in an attempt
to get into leading colleges and spend a majority of their time studying or in academically related
situations. In order to accommodate for cram schools and the extra homework provided by them,
students sacrifice their time for themselves and their sleep. In a study published in the Korean
Journal of Pediatrics on sleep patterns and school performances, data indicated an average of less
than six hours of sleep on the weeknights for high schoolers. Additionally, the National Sleep
Foundation attributes behaviorally induced insufficient sleep syndrome, otherwise known as
voluntary sleep deprivation, to, poor work performance,

The Decision To Drop The Atomic Bomb
The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb
One of the most tendentious decisions made by the United States President, Harry S. Truman was
to use atomic weapons on Japan. President Truman knew he was faced with a great decision, he
dropped the bombs to save both American and Japanese lives, the Japanese not being willing to
surrender and also to shorten the war. President Truman was justified to drop the Atomic Bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan was never willing to surrender, it was a part of their culture and if
they did it would show vulnerability and shame to their country. President Harry S. Truman took
this seriously and made a very tough decision to drop the Atomic Bombs.
Dropping the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved millions of American and Japanese
lives. If the United States decided to keep island hopping and invade Japanese territory they
would have lost close to one to two million American lives, including Japan about five million
lives would have been lost. With the bomb it would have costed about two hundred thousand lives.
Not using the atomic bombs would have forced the United States to launch a full invasion of
Japanese home islands, and this would have killed far more people than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Augustus- Absolute Power By Any Means Necessary
With the death of Julius Caesar, Augustus became the leader of Julius great conquests, resources,
and soldiers. Immense power was his to seize. However, the power came at a cost. At the forefront
of his attention, Julius killers were still loose, sewing seeds of violent oppression to this authority.
Combined with this constant fear of revolt, the propaganda of Marc Antony and others further
challenged his right to rule. Therefore, for Augustusto command the absolute power bestowed upon
him, he must eliminate any threats by any means necessary. This took the form of massacre. The
justification for Augusts campaign against any threat came from propaganda spread against him
and its potential to undermine his rule. One of the primary methods of belittlement came in the
form of slander against his family name. No individual utilized this tactic more cunningly than
Marc Antony. The first rumors targeted the social position of his ancestors. Antony claimed
Augustus paternal great grandfather was only a freeman and his grandfather a money changer. On
the maternal side, Antony publically spread Augusts maternal great grandfather was a baker from
Africa. Even though Suetonius dismisses the Antony s rumor of money changing, many Romans
followed Antony s strategy of humiliation (including Cassius Parmensis). By undermining his
family ties, Antony could unsettle the legitimacy behind his rule. Since social position determined
the cursus honorum, a successful tarnish could

Female Genital Mutilation
Consent, in its various forms and states in certain contexts, forms a crucial part of legality and
illegality, in that its existence strongly categorises the nature of an act (Tuckness 2012). If consent
were established, it would be easy for the layman to conclude that an act should not be intervened
with by the state. Per contra, the complexities surrounding an act go beyond these simple
distinctions. The issue of intervention can to some degree be seen as problematic in its
fundamental aim to represent and advocate for a particular victim , in spite of the circumstances of
the situation, which tend to run parallel with a different narrative (Alcoff, 1992; Seth, 2001). This

The World Will Have A Generation Of Idiots
I fear the day technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of
idiots. Albert Einstein s words describe a time where people are more focused on a virtual
version of themselves than real human interaction. Some may argue that this time has already
come, and some say this time will be upon us soon. The inevitable growth of video games will
lead to children whose lives are dictated by video games. From mobile apps to consoles, video
games have taken the world by storm. They have grown to become the pastime or even
profession of players all around the globe. Professional gamers compete in games such as Call of
Duty, Dota2, and League of Legends in international or domestic tournaments with prize pools
reaching over a million dollars. The International, the largest gaming tournament in the world,
holds a total prize pool of over ten million dollars. This tournament is so popular that within an
hour of being available, the tickets sold out. Gamers compete in teams that sometimes hold
members from many different countries. Becoming a world class gamer takes countless hours of
practice just like any other sport. Although many athletes may consider gaming to be more of a

I want to leave, transfer, warp myself to another galaxy. I want to confess everything, hand over

away at the inside of my ribs. Even if i dump the memory, it will stay with me, staining me. My
closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside my head where no one
can hear them. (Anderson 51)
Anderson s writing style is clearly shown in this excerpt from early in the novel. Anderson s use
of the closet symbolizes many things. The closet is a secret place, reflecting the secret of the
rape. It symbolizes Melinda s need to hide from the world so she doesn t have to speak to
anyone. It also represents isolation. Anderson uses hyperbole ( a beast in my gut ) to signify how
terrible Melinda always feels on the inside. She also uses personification (memory.. stains me ) to
indicate that the memory will forever be etched in her. Finally, the tone of this excerpt is the tone
of the major portion of this novel. Melinda is constantly depressed, never speaks, and has a

Leadership Styles From The Point Of View
Comparative Analysis
The articles under analysis explore leadership styles from the point of view of their relation to
gender (Merchant, 2012) and personality (Yahaya et al., 2011). Merchant (2012) provides a
valuable research, which is focused on gender as the major determinant of leadership styles in
individuals. Providing an analysis of literature, Merchant (2012) indicates that many studies
analyzing the intersection of gender and influence tactics have resulted in mixed finding (p. 24). It
proves the argument that gender stereotypes play a major role in attributing particular roles for
females and males on the basis of their biological sex and what is expected of them. Whereas
Merchant (2012) does not present a particular argument ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I happened to work under both female and male leadership, and I should admit that the difference
between them is not evident everything depends on personality, and dissimilarities in influence
tactics are attributed to situational circumstances such as individual setting (Merchant, 2012, p. 26).
Personal Leadership Style
My leadership style is both Participative and Democratic, and it is influenced by the three variables
gender, personality, and age. Democratic Leader makes the final decision, only after receiving the
input and recommendations of all team members, (Goetsch, 2002). I focus on getting to the bottom
of the problem with working through it.
Effect of Gender
Though gender is a contradictory variable in affecting leadership styles, I should note that
gender does play an important role in the way I influence other people. In this aspect, I should
agree with Merchant (2012), who indicate, women value cooperation [...] and have a less clear
focus on where the boundaries of their friendships end and their individual identities begin (p.
18). As a female, I feel I have to work harder than a male doing the same job. Even though, I feel
that I have to work harder than a man, I also think that it s not always about your gender, but how
a person is a leader. Kanter, argues that males and females who occupy the same organizational role
theoretically differ very

Benefits Of Using The Internet
Introduction:
In modern society we heavily rely on computers for a number of different reasons whether that
be paying bills, shopping online or simply staying in touch with family and friends. If you take a
look around at daily life it is clear to see just how important computers and technology are to us,
they make life easier. One would never have that one day you could do your shopping without
having to leave the comfort of your own home, this is just one of the basic uses of the modern
computer.
The fastest growing element of the computer world is the internet, due to this development the
internet has now become the main communication method within the current generation whether
that is between people or companies. The internet has a lot of benefits, people and companies can
communicate and connect with others in various locations, therefore companies can take advantage
of using the internet network to support their business, however there are some disadvantages to
this method, using the internet heavily to communicate can leave companies and people vulnerable
to cyber crime such as network attacks, this results in companies taking extreme actions to have the
best network security possible and maximise efforts to protect their network.
A majority of people think that security attacks happen externally, someone outside the company
but in fact internal attacks happen more frequent and are more harmful, Cryptek (2001) based the
argument from some articles, that internal

  • 3. Poe s Psychology In The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Alan Poe s writing is centered primarily on the psyche and Freudian beliefs. The Freudians would call his stories of horror expressions of anxiety, which to them always has a sexual connotation. It is true that Poe s passions were of his mind. One of his most famous poems, The Raven, is a perfect example of that. The Ravenby Poe is a psychological study into the depths of his despair primarily driven by the death of his loved ones, financial troubles he had in his adult life, and his mental illness. Edgar Allan Poe grew up in a poor family due to his parents being small actors in a local theater in Boston. His father was said to be a victim of consumption which Edgar later inherited from him in life, and this is one of the things that eventually led to the downfall of his career as well as his life. His mother however, was a beautiful and talented woman, whom he looked up to and took pride in. It s from her that he inherited the artistic ability, and was made to be very fond of drawing and writing stories. As an adolescent, both his parents died of disease and starvation, and the death of his mother took a bad toll on him. Soon after her death, the theater where she so often performed burned down due to a large fire. His mother s death, and the sight of the burning theater where his beautiful mother had so often graced the stage, must have had a powerful effect upon the dawning imagination of young Edgar, so that even at this early age there appeared to him the ... • 4. Aboriginal Land Rights within Australia Essay Terra Nullius was once apparent in Australian society, but has now been nullified with the turn of the century. With the political changes in our society, and the apology to Indigenous Australians, society is now witnessing an increase in aboriginals gaining a voice in today s society. Described by Pat Dodson (2006) as a seminal moment in Australias history, Rudd s apology was expressed in the true spirit of reconciliation opening a new chapter in the history of Australia. Considerable debate has arisen within society as to whether aboriginals have a right to land that is of cultural significance and whether current land owners will be able to keep their land. An issue facing society is whether legislation in place is sufficient in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Case by case indigenous Australians begin to gain access to the land that was taken from them. Contentious debate continues to rage in present society opening a floodgate of ethical issues which can have detrimental effects on all parties involved. Ethics vary from each individual and tend to stem from their own belief systems external to that person (Dosen, Harris, Brock, Imariso and Smith 2007:336). These ethics give rise to conflicting arguments in present society. 50 years ago, Indigenous Australians were not entitled to enter a bar, cafe, swimming pool, or a cinema, if that deprivation of basic rights wasn t enough; they then took children from their mothers later on known as the stolen generation (www.creativespirits.2008). The stolen generation, estimated at over 100,000 children were taken from their homes and placed in missions, reserves or dormitories (www.creativespirits.2008). I feel our childhood has been taken away from us and it has left a big hole in our lives an Indigenous Australian part of the stolen generation (www.creativespirtis.2008). The loss of ones culture and identity was deemed worse then being poor and living in sub standard living with their families. • 5. Critical Narrative And Story Telling Style English 2201 helped me discover not only myself as a writer, but allowed me to go more in depth with learning how to write in the field of my intended discipline. This is the first specific English class I have taken that focused on the style of writing I will need to be familiar in the future with. Because of that fact, I defiantly enjoyed this class. I feel like my knowledge and ability to navigate the writingtechniques of my major have improved and my in text citations skills have improved greatly. Overall this course opened my eyes to the many different styles there are in the field of Communications, which is my intended field of study, and how to use these styles correctly and efficiently. I learned an array of new things with every paperand project we participated in. Our first project was a critical narrative styled paper. Personally when it comes to writing, I prefer the critical narrative and story telling style because I enjoy putting my creative mind to work. It is easier for me to write down exactly what I am thinking, rather than writing research papers with sources to go off of. So, I extremely enjoyed the first project. The main element I can take away from writing the Category 1: Writing in the Field assignment was how to conduct a proper interview. I interviewed Marc Morriston, who is the head of marketing at WNCT News here in Greenville. I conducted the interview based off of what we learned in class and I ended up making connections that I can use in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both were different and each had their own ways of teaching their codes, wearing different types of armor, and different techniques of training. As they trained and grew stronger they both were eventually promoted to become a knightor a samuraiand studied their religion. • 7. Optional Humility Analysis The three types of humility according to Schein are basic humility, optional humility and here and now humility. Basic humility is when society dictates that people born into a class structure are due a certain amount of respect. An example of this would be how we deal with our boss s families. Optional humility is when one achieves their status through their actions and hard work. Most of the leaders in my organization are where they are today because they have worked hard to get there. We treat them with respect not only because of the job, but also because of their hard work. Here and now humility is the type of humility I think we deal with the most often. • 8. Compare And Contrast Meteor And The Phoenix By John Wyndham The short stories Meteor and The Phoenix both convey the theme of social downfall. In each of the stories, arrogance causes the character s downfall. Meteor by John Wyndham is a good example, how misunderstanding and a lack of communication can lead to social downfall. Both sides, the humans and aliens, wonder if it is too much we ask simply to live, to work, and to build, in peace... (page 12, Onns Diary). But still, although both sides expect to live in peace, they do not act peacefully. The alien leader kills a cat and a dog, because they think the creatures are monsters. On the other side, the humans kill the aliens, just because they do not really know, if the aliens might be dangerous. Therefore, they sent a cloud of insect killer ... He had the finest aviary (...), so well laid out that both hummingbirds and snow buntings had a climate that suited them perfectly (page 1). Mr. Poldero on the other hand, only cares for the money, the phoenix brings and even tries to kill it, just because of the money. Daily he stationed himself in front of the cage to jeer at the bird and abuse it (page 2). Because of this abuse of the bird, the cage might seem like injustice to the reader. The phoenix was moved to a smaller cage (page 2) and tortured by Mr. Poldero, until it got sick. Mr. Poldero s greed is shown, as one day the phoenix began turning over the straw (page 3), all that Mr. Poldero does, is to sign film contracts. In both of the stories, the characters ignorance leads to the death of many living creatures, like the aliens in Meteor and the spectators in The Phoenix . Both authors use symbolism to point the reader towards this theme. In The Phoenix , though, there is justice in the end, but in Meteor there is no justice, as the aliens die and neither of the sides recognizes, what they have done. To conclude, the stories have similar meanings, as in both arrogance leads to social downfall and the stories use similar ways to lead the reader to this conclusion. However, the stories have very different themes and use different symbols to achieve the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Dynamic Duel The Dynamic Duel According to U.S Department of Commerce, in 2008 a household of 2 combine incomes was increasingly better and well of that than a 1 household income. Consequently, income inequalities before 1950 was just as bad as it is now. In 2008, a married couple s median income consisted approximately around 50,303, while a single parent s median income was 4 percent less of their counterparts. It is important to note that two parent household income matter as much as they used to. Together, a two parent household income can provide an opportunity to be stress free from the burden of paying bills and having enough money left over for the rest of the week, also, a two parent household income allows for the chance to put money into a saving account, and lastly, a two parent household income creates an environment where both parents can spend more time with their children. Thirty year old Elizabeth Holmes accomplished this with her company Theranos. I think a lot of young people have incredible ideas and incredible insights, but sometimes they wait before they go to give their life something, she said, what I did was just to start a little earlier (Holmes). Elizabeth dropped out of Stanford University at the age of 19 and cashed the funds for her tuition to start her company. Her company took the $76 billion industry in laboratory diagnostics head on. This industry hasn t changed since the modern clinical laboratory emerged in the 1960 s. Elizabeth s company wants to use a pinprick of blood in a container smaller than a dime to do 50 plus blood diagnostics in one. This means no vials of blood, no tourniquets and less time than the traditional test time. All the things the company is trying to create are amazing. My father has been part of this union for over twenty years and it has been very important for my family. This union has not only helped my family, but it has also made my childhood very enjoyable with all of the events that are hosted for the families of union members. The union has hosted an annual Christmasparty that was welcome for my familyto attend, it has picnics in the summer for all to enjoy, and most importantly, the union has helped my family financially. There were many events hosted by the union every year and the annual union Christmas party that was held for all union members was my favourite one to attend, especially as a child. Every Christmas, I would look forward to this party because I loved the presents I received and taking pictures with Santa, which was my favourite thing to do during the Christmas season. • 12. Gang Prevention Programs And Their Effectiveness I.Overview of the topic/problem statement My topic is to discover gang prevention programs and their effectiveness. The prevention programs being discussed are the G.R.E.A.T. program and the Comprehensive Anti Gang Initiative (CAGI). The problem is that these prevention methods are not effective in alternatives to gang life. The alternatives could include family, protection, and these support that gangs give to their members. If these programs are not successful in offering these alternatives then the program will not be as effective. Before the revision of the G.R.E.A.T. program the program evaluation was not good (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). Finn Aage Esbensen (2011), did a study on G.R.E.A.T. students versus Non G.R.E.A.T. students to monitor their attitudes and whether the behavioral goals were achieved (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). The differences the G.R.E.A.T. students showed were lower levels of victimization and risk seeking tendencies, more prosocial peers, more negative views about gangs, and more positive views of law enforcement (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). Furthermore, there were no differences between G.R.E.A.T. and non G.R.E.A.T. students in levels of delinquency, violence, or gang membership (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). . Importantly, the five significant differences did not emerge until 3 or 4 years after program exposure; the earlier analyses conducted just 2 years post program revealed no differences at all between the experimental and comparison groups (Esbensen, F., Peterson, D., Taylor, T., Freng, A., Osgood, D., Carson, D., Matsuda, K. ,2011). The idea of Concealed Carry Arms is a controversial topic because it represents both protection and fear as no one knows who has a weapon, whether they have it legally or even if they know how to use it properly and safely. Also, nobody knows of someone else s intentions with Concealed Carry Arms as they could use that gun for protection or murder. The idea of allowing Concealed Carry Arms on campus is a controversial topic that could affect universities and campuses in the United States. The University of Toledo has had one incident this year with guns on campus. At the beginning of the semester a person that was believed to be another student pulled a gun on another student and demanded the victim s car keys. When the victim refused, the gunmen fired a shot at the ground then ran. This brings up the debate of whether people can be trusted to have Concealed Carry Arms on campus or not. Such as the gunmen earlier this semester. PTSD is a disorder that develops when people have experienced a traumatic event. Mr. Lindsay (2017) stated, I sometimes relive the moments that my friends have passed right in front of me. Although he has coped efficiently with this disorder, many PTSD victims cope with their disorder with alcohol, drugs, and abuse. However, I will say that this family has coped really well with this situation. Also, another big difference is that they have a smaller family than mine, but they want it to grow. For instance, some states may not collect child support in a case with an emancipated child. In cases with emancipated children, the United States Office of Child Enforcement says that states are not under any obligation to collect in response to another state s request. However, most states have liberal statutes of limitation. The statutes of limitation allow a private collection service to be effective where a government agency would not be. Private Collection Companies Have Lighter Case Loads One reason that government agencies are unsuccessful has to do with the number of cases they have. Government child support agencies often struggle to deal with a high caseload. The caseload of private collection companies is comparatively low. According to Document B, Lincoln was in favor of the race to which I belong, having the superior position . Since Lincoln believed that he, the white race, was better and superior to the Negroes, this proves that he is racist because of his ideology. In addition, Lincoln was a racist because of his words. In Document C and D, Lincoln called the Negroes heathism , barbarian , creatures . By using such demeaning and dehumanizing words, Lincoln puts down the Negroes, which establishes himself as the better race. However, some may argue that Lincoln was not a racist. In Document A, Lincoln believed that the Negro was born his equal and that no human law can deprive him of these rights . By thinking that he is equal to Negroes, it demonstrates that he does not think lowly of them. Although Lincoln stated that the Negro is his equal, it does not hide the fact that he believes that the white race is more superior and the words he uses to describe the Negroes.Historical figures should not be judged by today s moral standards because their actions back then might have been different if they were here in present day. • 33. Biological Diversity Effects of Loss of Biological Diversity As the loss of biological diversity or biodiversity continues to increase at unprecedented rates, it leaves a long lasting effect on the environment of the planet Earth. Such effects are so threatening that they can claim human lives in the near future. Humans are clearing forests (deforestation) to occupy more land to urbanise more areas. Thus, as humans continue to exploit the habitat of animals and plants for their own selfish needs, they harm the entire environment of the earth. The deforestation has resulted in a variety of animals, which dwell in that area, to leave the habitat. This is quite alarming as it could result in the loss of those species diversity in the future. The precious natural resources of the green earth are excessively exploited by humans. This includes overharvesting animals to the extent that these species become extinct. It also includes overconsumption of natural resources such as timber and fossil fuel which take years to regenerate. This is a direct threat to biodiversity. Humans pollute the environment in every way they can. They pollute the air with harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and nitrogen oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles. These greenhouse gases are, in turn, destroying the ozone layer. The ozone layer reflects the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. Gergen (1985) stated, From the constructionist position the process of understanding is not automatically driven by the forces of nature, but is the result of an active, cooperative enterprise of persons in relationship (p. 267). This perspective acknowledges historical and cultural biases as primary influences on the construction of an individual s worldview and suggests that Descriptions and explanations of the world themselves constitute forms of social action (Gergen, 1985, pp. 267 268). As a social constructivist, I recognize that when people tell stories of their lived experiences, certain phrases may be expressed through body movements, facial expressions, and gestures, and these actions further illuminate what the individual is communicating (Gergen, 1985). Who Is David Adjaye Sunken House Sunken House Analysis One of the things that most architects strive to achieve in their work is to make it stand out and really add to its location s surroundings. This was definitely accomplished by David Adjaye in his Sunken House project. In 2007, Adjaye designed a house for photographer Ed Reeve which is why today it is also called Ed s Shed. However, the Sunken House is also a very deserving name. On the lot there was a space already dug out for a basement foundation, however Adjaye had no intentions of including some traditional basement. Ultimately the end result or final product can reflect to the process and the journey made to get to it, which is just another outstanding design reflected in Adjaye s project. In conclusion there are many innovative or modernized design styles of Adjaye in this Sunken House project, and many of his other projects reflect similar design concepts. Research On Educational Psychology Assignment Barbara Jones EDU 614 Dr. C 2 February 2015 Research in Educational Psychology Assignment Topic There are numerous motivational theories that have been discussed and tested. Different students unknowingly, or sometimes knowingly, utilize different theories since no two students are alike. Many teachers acknowledge that different students are motivated by different things, whether it be intrinsic extrinsic, self efficacy or interest. Not only can gender and age differences affect motivation, but the student s self efficacy and level of goal setting also affect the student s motivation. As a teacher, it has been noted that certain students are motivated to do certain tasks while others are not. In order to learn, students need to be motivated. One of the most difficult challenges of teaching is fighting the battle of motivating the students, which then leads to supporting them and helping them motivate themselves. Textbook Summary The textbook definition for motivation is the inner state that energizes, directs, and sustains behavior. (Ormrod, 2015, p. 186) It goes on to state that humans usually tend to work with a purpose. Motivation not only influences the activities that learners choose, but it also affects the degree to which they engage in those activities (Ormrod, 2015, p. 186). While teachers do play a big part in motivating students, motivation also has to come from within the students. In order for students to feel motivated, they must have certain primary ... Understanding the process our minds undergo during memory recall has helped greatly in legal cases involving an eyewitness. People generally believe that an eyewitness report provides completely reliable evidence to a criminal case. However, Elizabeth Loftus of the University of Washington has found that when an individual recalls a memoryit is not described completely as it occurred but is reconstructed using other information as well. Loftus is a leading researcher in the memory field of psychology. In this experimental study she proposed that the manner in which a questionis asked influences the individual s answer. Prior to researchers like Loftus legal cases often came down to a point of the finger from an eyewitness; who consciously or not was not always reliable. Due to this unreliability Loftus created four experimental methods in relation to typical eyewitness cases in order to test her theoretical proposition. In the initial study, 150 subjects were shown a video of a five car chain reaction accident that occurred when a car (Car A) drove through a stop sign into oncoming traffic. When the film finished the individuals filled out ten questions. One half of the group s first question was How fast was Car A going when it ran the stop sign? Combined with this constant fear of revolt, the propaganda of Marc Antony and others further challenged his right to rule. Therefore, for Augustusto command the absolute power bestowed upon him, he must eliminate any threats by any means necessary. This took the form of massacre. The justification for Augusts campaign against any threat came from propaganda spread against him and its potential to undermine his rule. One of the primary methods of belittlement came in the form of slander against his family name. No individual utilized this tactic more cunningly than Marc Antony. The first rumors targeted the social position of his ancestors. Antony claimed Augustus paternal great grandfather was only a freeman and his grandfather a money changer.
