What would I like to see change: In spending time thinking about living on campus
it was really hard for me to find something that I really felt strongly about changing,
however the one thing that does come to mind is the house of the dining halls on the
weekends as well as the menus. Because first year students are required to have a
mealplan, it is a hindrance to students when the dining halls are closed. During my
first year as a student I was very active on campus on the weekends and every
weekend I had to skip a meal in the morning because the dining hall was closed. I
think that if Fresh Foods can stay open until 2am weekdays for students to have a late
night meal, then Juniper dining should open up at 7am on the weekends to give
students an option for foodearly on the weekends. Additionally, I think that instead of
serving breakfast until 2pm, the dining hall can open up early and serve a full menu.

Gender and Dress Code High school dress codes are rules for clothing that is
deemed either appropriate or inappropriate to wear to school. Standard codes in
public schools, that don t have uniforms, typically require students to have sleeved
garments and leg wear that is a certain length. At some schools, the term leg wear
doesn t include leggings, while other schools permit leggings as long as your shirt or
other clothing reaches the length that shorts are required to meet. After attending five
public schools, three of which during my high school career, I can verify that these
were typically the enforced rules. All schools also had rules against hats and
certain headgear, though exceptions would sometimes be made, such as in the case
of spirit week. My most recent school has, for the most part, been very relaxed
about dress codes. Most of the rules are simply to maintain a piece of decency
among the students. The code basically calls for undergarments to remain
concealed, provocative skin can t be shown, shirts must have sleeves, and leg wear

In the story, Jerry is on holiday at the beach with his mother, when he sees a group of
older men diving through an underwater tunnel. This fascinates him so he starts

Jerry s mother is very protective of his son and seems to care about him a lot. She
worries that she is being too protective and that he is old enough to look after himself.
Lessing is sympathetic towards her characters and she shows this in many ways.
The story is mostly written in the limited third person from Jerry s point of view,
but there are a few parts where it briefly goes into the mother s point of view. She
was thinking, Of course he s old enough to be safe without me. Have I been keeping
him too close? He mustn t feel he ought to be with me. I must be careful.
It is written from Jerry s point of view so that we can experience his pain and
suffering as he is swimming through the tunnel but on the other hand to understand
why he wanted to take on this challenge in the first place.
The story takes place in a warm, foreign country where Jerry and his mother are
staying at a villa for their summer holidays. The beach gives it a warm and relaxed
feeling, but as Jerry dives down deeper towards and into the tunnel the mood
becomes colder and darker.
The theme of this short story is to set goals and not to give up on them. Every day,
we set goals and try to attain them but Lessing might also be trying to warn us not to
be too go too far trying to keep up with our goals. Jerry is determined to have the
ability to dive through the tunnel to such a large extent,
