The document describes a novel cascaded multilevel inverter design using sub multilevel inverters. A sub multilevel inverter topology is first presented that uses n DC voltage sources and a combination of unidirectional and bidirectional switches to generate positive voltage levels. Multiple sub inverters are then connected in series to form the proposed novel cascaded multilevel inverter. Equations are provided to calculate the number of switches, drivers, IGBTs, sources, and standing voltages for the sub inverters based on the value of n. The cascaded inverter design is analyzed for both symmetric and asymmetric configurations and is intended to reduce components compared to other multilevel inverter designs.
