The War of the Worlds: Book and movie adaptation comparison
By
Magaidh Gordon
Part A: Summary
Text:
The War of the Worlds (1898), a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, is the first person narrative of an
unnamed protagonist s (and his brother s) adventures in Surrey and London as Earth is invaded by
aliens. Written in 1895, it is one of the earliest stories that details a conflict between mankind and an
extraterrestrial race. Despite its age, this book is still a widely enjoyed classic, and has inspired nearly
50 movies, 6 Broadway productions, and 2 musicals (one of which I personally own) in its time! The
War of the Worlds presents itself as a factual account of the Martian ... Show more content on

The narrator escapes detection by hiding in the coal cellar.
The Martians eventually depart, and the narrator is able to head toward Central London. He once
again encounters the artilleryman, who briefly persuades him to cooperate in a grandiose plan to
rebuild civilization underground. But after a few hours the narrator perceives the lunacy of this plan
and the overall laziness of his companion and abandons the artilleryman to his delusions. Heading into
a deserted London, he is at the point of despair and offers his life to the aliens when he discovers that
the invaders have died from microbial infections to which they had no immunity, since there are no
bacteria in Mars. The narrator realises with joy that the threat has been vanquished. The narrator
suffers a brief breakdown of which he remembers nothing, he is nursed back to health by a kind
family, and returns home to find his wife, whom he had given up for dead. The last chapter, entitled
Epilogue, reflects on the significance of the invasion and the abiding sense of doubt and insecurity that
it has left in the narrator s mind.

The Installation of Technology in Sport Stadium Essay
Goal! The fans rise in celebration as the ball crosses the line. Or does it? The ball was just over the
line according to the referee. However, technology says otherwise. Over the years, there have been
many controversial calls in all sports. Human referees have always made mistakes. It has been debated
whether technology should take over refereeing. Some argue that technology will improve the
accuracy of calls in sports, while others claim that it will remove from the human aspect in sports.
Technology should not be used instead of referees in sports, because it is costly to operate, occupies
more time during matches, and takes away from the human element of sports.
Installation of technology in sports stadiums would require a lot of ... Show more content on

Introducing technology to sports would result in frequent stoppages during games, and would take
away from the excitement of the matches.
Although many argue that technology will make decisions in sports more accurate, it is believed that
human error actually makes sports more exciting. Errors made by referees can create make games
more engaging for viewers and fun to watch. Next, technology puts a lot of pressure on referees to
make correct calls. Refereeing is a stressful job by itself, and technology would put more stress on
referees. Fans, because of available technology, will begin to lose respect for referees if they make
mistakes. In addition, sports are a human activity, and should remain this way. FIFA general secretary
Jerome Valcke says that, we should trust and keep football as a human game ( Goal line... ). Also,
introduction of technology into sports would miss a huge opportunity to educate people about the role
of uncertainty in science (Pielke). Lastly, use of technology would increase the risk of hacking and
fake video footage (Pielke). In conclusion, human error is an essential part of sports, and eliminating
mistakes by introducing technology would make sports less exciting and appealing.
Technology should not be used in refereeing in sports, since it is time occupying, requires a lot of
funds to manage, and takes away the element of human error from sports. Referee errors do not make

Southeast Missouri State University Diversity Case Study
Southeast Missouri State University currently has 12 residence halls, two of which are currently

hundred students during the fall and spring semesters. Dr. Carlos Vargas Aburto soon to be inducted
on May 5th of 2016 has taken his position head on so far really promoting the diversity that is on the
campus. A problem that the university is currently facing is diversity opportunities in the residence

2015 an issue that our country faced was the issue of acceptance of others that would classify
themselves as a member of the LGBTQ community. As the campus of Southeast Missouri State

The New Way We Look At Things
3 D The New Way We Look at Things Did a soldier ever think of printing his missing hand that was
amputated while in combat? Or did that surgeon ever thought of printing that patient s matching heart
that s been on the national organ donor list for the past two years? And how about printing the most
want it toy for Christmas for your child? Well now you can, by using a 3 D modeling technology
printing concept. 3 D (Three Dimensional) modeling technology in the medical field has been an
innovation since the 1980 s. This technology has come a long ways. 3 D modeling technology printing
is a method of additive manufacturing and built up technique where a three dimensional object is
shaped by laying down consecutive layers of material to create an object in a 3 D aspect. Recently,
there has been an increase in the number of companies providing personalized three dimensional
printed models of objects that have been scanned and reduced to a 3 D shape with the assistance of
computer software, and then printed to the customer s requests. This technology has developed into
many branches, in which has opened doors leading to a new form of imagery in the world of printing.
While some may argue this technology may result in a trend of piracy and with its non proprietary
software, some individuals may gain profit by manufacturing counterfeit pharmaceutical products.
Society should invest in the 3 D modeling technology concept as many individuals have been creating

Police Brutality Of Police Officers
Recently police have come under fire for the deaths of many unarmed African American males. This
has broken the trust between civilians and police and torn our country apart. People are frustrated
about the killings of unarmed citizens and how it seems every officer can get away with killing an
unarmed suspect. Back in 1994 a law was passed that required the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI) to record date on police involved shooting and deaths by police officers. Except where are the
numbers that would show there is an increase in unarmed African American deaths from police
officers? The 1994 law requires the FBI to keep record of police shootings across the United States.
However, the only police shooting records that could be found on the FBI website was Justified
Homicide From on Duty Officers from 2008 2012 . So the question becomes where is the data that
proves there is an increase in African American deaths by the hands of police officers. With the recent
outcry of Police Brutality you would think that the FBI would ve released records or started recording
any and all police shootings. Experts say that we aren t experiencing an increase in police shootings
just an increase in media coverage of police shootings. According to a professor from University from
Albany who teaches sociology says his research has found that major news agencies have elevated the
coverage of police fatalities despite the decrease of police killings according to statistics. Aaron

Stroop Interference
Abstract
Interference was examined using the numerical Stroop task as a way to quantify the effects of
conflicting stimuli. We hypothesized that it would take more time to complete a counting task than it
would take to complete a reading task. During this study participants attempted to process incongruent
and congruent stimuli while reporting the time it took to complete each task. Processing the
incongruent stimuli required that participants focus on counting the numbers while fighting the
inclination to read the numbers. The results showed that this active process produced longer reaction
times for the incongruent task. These findings suggest that interfering stimuli are in competition with
non automatic stimuli to produce verbal output. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his study using distractor words with similar meanings Finkbeiner (2006) saw that when these
words were masked there were obvious facilitating effects (Finkbeiner, 2006). Similarly, results
showed that during congruent conditions, congruent stimuli facilitate or improve performance on the
Stroop task so that the participant responds faster to congruent stimuli. However, despite its apparent
prevalence facilitation does not occur as much as interference (Brown, 2011). Previous research
demonstrated that interference and facilitation could be decoupled (McLeod, 1991). When the
condition using pseudohomophones (blue and bloo) was compared to incongruent conditions there
was interference for both conditions but no facilitation for the pseudohomophones (McLeod,

Dashing Dreams, Raising Realism Everyone is told that they can be anyone they want to be, be

settled upon Kansas University. Although the choice between the two originally seemed clear to me,

While going to a noteworthy school is delightful, the magnificence of the school comes at a price.
While Washington University is one of the best colleges in the country, they are known to be
extremely expensive. Not only that, but their scholarships are much harder to obtain. In addition, even
before trying to repay loans, tuition there costs about twice as much as going to Kansas University.
When paying off student loans, even with scholarships, students may find themselves paying around
77,000 dollars more than their original loan balance of around 180,000 dollars. Conversely, Kansas
University is much cheaper, allowing good students to take out a loan of less than 100,000 dollars.
Additionally, obtaining scholarships from Kansas University is much easier than trying for one at
Washington University. Future students from in state such as myself will find themselves having to
pay less tuition and travel costs. Although Washington University may be nicer, its ridiculous prices
make it a worse alternative to the much more affordable Kansas University. I always dreamed of

that Kansas University may be a better alternative. Their educations vary little, but Kansas University

The Importance Of Perpetual Optimism
Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier (Oren, 1996). Optimism has played a major role throughout
my career. Optimism has gotten me through some very tough times. I don t know where I would be
without being optimistic. My way of thinking caused those around me to think and act the same way.
During times of duress such as conducting field training exercises, my Soldiers notice when I think
about the better things to get us through it. There has been several times when missions has caused a
higher stress level than normal. As leaders we have to find ways to get out of difficult times. Instead of
complaining I always try to find ways think about the outcome of the situation. I always think how the
situation could always be worst. When I let those around me the situation can always be worst , they
always tend to agree with me. I look forward to the challenging times because the challenging times
make us stronger. Optimism also pertains to life outside the Army. I m a true believer in looking at
things in a positive way. Every time I am put in situations where the odds may be against me,
optimism is my best friend. Optimism never seems to fail me. With my optimism comes others to
perform better and look at things a different way. I can truly say my life is surrounded with optimism.
Everything that comes up usually causes me to be optimistic.
Have fun in your command. Don t always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you ve earned it.
Spend time with your families.

Satire In George Orwell s Animal Farm
If animals could talk, think, and feel like humans, what would happen? The answer: revolution.
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a political satire in which animals exhibit behaviors and ideas that
mimics communist Russia. In Animal Farm, the character Boxer and his experiences relate to this
theme: In society, individuals are not treated equally; this relationship demonstrates flaws in the
practices of the ideals of communism. Boxer never received credit for his efforts. An example of this
can be found from the excerpt, taken from pages 61 62. But it was a slow, laborious process.

and sometimes when it was pushed over the edge it failed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

special treatment, unlike the pigs, which shows a certain unfairness in this practice. Boxer works hard,
yet he is treated unfairly. The pigs do next to nothing, yet they receive much more credit. An example
of which can be found on page 93. Napoleon was now never spoken of simply as Napoleon. He was
always referred to in the formal style as our Leader, Comrade Napoleon, and the pigs like to invent for
him such titles as Father of All Animals, Terror of Mankind, Protector of the Sheep fold, Ducklings
Friend, and the like. There is absolutely no truth to these titles and such, yet Napoleon and the pigs
give themselves credit which they do not deserve. Boxer has clearly demonstrated, time and time
again, his efforts. The pigs do nothing but sit around and plan things, and they are the ones to receive

The holocaust also known as Shoah in Hebrew started around 1933, it was a mass genocide where
almost six million Jews were brutally killed as a deliberate attempt to get rid of the entire Jewish
population. Adolf Hitler came into command as the chancellor of Germany on January 30,1933; he

The Effects Of Multitasking On College Students
While the consequences for teens who multitask during school time are severe, Luke 3 multitasking
also results in an excessive amount of wasted time. It takes several tenths of a second for the cerebral
cortex to switch from one task to another, and those tenths are what cause teens problems (Kuchinas,
Why Multitasking Isn t Efficient ). The time it takes to switch tasks decreases focus, which makes
teens slower in their activity ( Keim, Is Multitasking Bad For Us?). An experiment conducted by
Isenburg placed 89 college students in three different groups, assigning them to read a psychology
text. One group received instant messages before reading, one group received them after, and one
group received no instant messages while reading. The results of the procedure revealed that the
groups which read the instant messages took considerably longer to read the text than those who didn t
receive messages (46, 47). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Multitasking not only wastes time, but creates habits of speed and switching for teens. Speed is the

With teens wanting to constantly change interests, social media devices are extremely popular. This
atmosphere can become problematic in the real world, since there are many times when teens will

Compare And Contrast Male And Female Relationships In The...
Relationships in the 1800 s are very different from a typical relationship in the present day. In the
1800 s, when a male and female came together to form a relationship, the male was always superior to
the female. During that time, the formation of a relationship gave the male utter control over his
partner. Nora and Torvalds relationship was established during a time where all women accepted their
fate of being inferior to males. Since then, women have been challenging that stereotype and
demanding equality. One of the prominent difference between a typical relationship now and Nora and

It seems that for most of Nora s life she s been under the thumb of a man. Another noticeable
difference that bounces off equality is the inability of Nora to work or do as she pleased. In a typical

today s society has adapted to allowing the male to not feel a constant pressure to provide as the
responsibility is shared. In the present, research shows that more and more men are becoming stay at
home husbands, working from home and raising their children at the same time. A man that stayed at
home whilst the woman worked was unheard of during the time of Nora s and Torvalds relationship.
Whereas during the time of Nora and Torvalds s relationship, it was expected that the female took care
of all the home keeping, whilst the male worked to support the family. Unlike a typical relationship in
the present day, Nora had to go behind her husband s back to work. In the novel, she mentions how

How Did The Government Cause Social Conflict In The French...
1790 s France had different groups with conflicting ideas on how their government should run. In the
French society, the rich wanted to stay rich and not pay taxes or accept other responsibilities. The poor
demanded change. The difference of opinions created a lot of conflicts because each group had strong
opinions on how the country should run. During the immediate period prior to and during the French
Revolution, the demands and interests of different groups caused social conflict. For example the
Third Estate demanded better voting procedures in order to address the inequality between the Estates.
Deficit spending was used selfishly by the First and Second Estate and The King was indifferent to the
hunger and poverty of the Third Estate (see right).
It was clear that the wealth of the First and Second Estate took advantage of the Third Estate, even
though the bourgeoisie had about eighty percent of the French population and wanted human rights.
When it came to The French government each of the three Estates would turn into a single chamber
legislature that would reform France in its own way (566 Spielvogel). Even though the Third Estate
had substantially more people, their vote was treated the same as the First and Second Estates vote.
The Third Estate wanted to change and Push its demands for voting by head (566 Spielvogel), where
each person would get one vote and the country was run by the population, not by each Estate. This

Mary Shelley s Frankenstein And The Bride Of Frankenstein...
It is amazing how words on a page take a life of their own once they are written. An author s story can
take readers away on a magic carpet ride, to a magical castle that anything can happen in Britain, even
through a wardrobe to a land far away and draft them in the battle of a lifetime. But what is even more
fascinating is that unlike humans, the words on the page never changes. From this moment to 200
years from now, the words on this page will always be the same, it is only the reader and the world
around them that changes. Take for example Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. In 1818, Shelley had a
nightmare that lead her to write her novel as a personification of the Victorian Culture s fascination of
science and death. In 1934, director James Whale adapted the material into The Bride of Frankenstein
film, and was an allegory for pre WWII unity, then in 1997, someone interpreted the film as a
homosexual allegory for the 1990 s. This paper will examine how Mary Shelley adapted her
nightmare into an allegory for her Victorian era audience, how James Whale used her original text to

Pickens Plan
Over the past century, the United States has created an enormous vehicle transportation infrastructure
solely based on one energy source, which is oil. Successful implementation of the Pickens Plan must
involve two major shifts when it comes to the U.S. energy consumption: replacing natural gas with
wind power as a significant source of electricity generation and replacing oil with natural gas as far as
transportation is concerned. If T. Boone Pickens Plan were to be successfully implemented, the global
price of oil would decrease because the plan itself would significantly decrease the demand for oil.
Therefore, when the demand drops, the price will go down as well. Pickens plan would reduce
demand for oil in two different ways. First, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a tariff on oil comes an incentive for people to reduce their use of oil and it makes the U.S. much
more independent. The domestic oil industry, would highly support this because it protects our home
country s producers from the competition of cheap OPEC oil imports. Producers of renewable energy
sources would support the tariff because a high oil price makes alternatives to oil more attractive.
Particularly, it offers a powerful reason to bring manufacturing back to North America. As shown on
the graphs that I have constructed, a tariff though it may result in some dead weight losses, it
nonetheless provides the incentive to reduce oil consumption and spending in this country and it also
provides tax revenue. When it comes to the positive externality graph based on the emphasis the
Pickens Plan places on natural gas in America, one can see the benefits the plan provides for the U.S,
economy as a whole. Yes, one can make the argument that there is simply no demand for such a
change at all whatsoever, however, assuming there were subsidies implemented for the Pickens Plan,
we see demand shift to the right, thus conveying that there will be demand if a good incentive is
provided to the U.S. consumers. It would be plausible for the U.S. to cut off spending billions of
dollars to foreign countries and spend its money and focus to move vehicles away from oil, and rely
on renewable energies such as solar, wind, biofuels, which would in effect, create jobs here in the
United States. This would be a better alternative than having the United States spend huge amounts of
money for oil

Ego Prohibits Self-Awareness In Annie Baker s Body Awareness
Ego prohibits self awareness. In the world today many people are nervous of not fitting in with society
so they create a big ego to hide behind their flaws. This kind of growth is evident in Annie Baker s
first play Body Awareness by one of the main characters, Jared. Jared is a twenty one year old, slightly
autistic boy who still lives with his gay parents, Joyce and Phyllis. Joyce and Phyllis have been telling
Jared he has Aspergers ever since he was five years old. Throughout the play Jared shows many signs
of Aspergers, but he will not admit it to himself or allow his parents accusations to be correct. Though
Jared is conscious of these signs, he is constantly coming up with excuses in order to seem perfect for
he believes this will make his parents happy. In the dramatic comedy Body Awareness written by
Annie Baker, the author displays that self confidence prevents one s self consciousness. Ego can
prohibit the idea of one s true self. All Joyce, Jared s mother wants is for Jared to be like any normal
kid, but he is not. This upsets her, and she constantly tries to bring up the fact that he may have
Asperger s and proceeds to explain why. Jared and Joyce, are having a civilized conversation while
cooking dinner when Joyce brings up a psychologist and Jared immediately begins to get angry and
yells, I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that I don t have it... I AM NOT FUCKING

The Effects Of Abstinence Based Programs On Actual...
Additional research has explored the effects of abstinence based programs on actual behavior
outcomes. Kohler, Manhart, and Lafferty (2008) compared the effects of abstinence only and
comprehensive sex education programs, operationalizing effectiveness in terms of initiation of sexual
activity and teen pregnancy rates. They found that teenagers who received comprehensive sex
education rather than abstinence only or no education were significantly less likely to report a teenage
pregnancy. In addition, their conclusions mirrored Sather and Kelly (2002), finding that abstinence
based programs did not reduce the likelihood of engaging in sexual activity. Kohler, Manhart, and
Lafferty (2008) actually concluded that comprehensive sex education was more likely than abstinence
based to reduce the percentage engaging in sexual activity. Overall, the researchers showed that
comprehensive sex education, including but not limited to contraception, did not increase the
prevalence of sexual activity in teenagers or the risk of teen pregnancy, while also showing the that
abstinence only education produced a higher likelihood of pregnancy.
These results have been corroborated in numerous studies: Santelli et al (2006), Ott and Santelli
(2007), Kirby (2008), Haberland and Rogow (2015), etc. Additionally many studies have taken a large
scale approach, looking at trends across the United States. Stanger Hall and Hall (2011) investigated

Theme Of The Boy In The Jacket By Gary Soto
Elementary school is a big step, especially getting ready for middle school. For example, if one is
bitter towards someone, meaning jealous or angry, then their middle school years won t go very well.
They will go through being angry and it will make them focus on less important things rather than
their studies or sports. Similar to the boy in The Jacket by Gary Soto, he goes through his life being
jealous of kids that are happy or have good relationships and new clothes. The boy does not like the
jacket his mother got him and, does not appreciate it enough, even though it gets the job done. In other
words, one does not get what they always want, one has to appreciate what they get, this supports the
overarching theme and is represented by the symbolism, the setting, and the metaphors.
First, the metaphors in The Jacket support the theme because they help clarify that everything one has
is important. In the article the boy says, That green ugly brother who breathed over my shoulder that

Jacket did not like the jacket at all. He did not want to wear it to school because it made him look like
a weirdo and, he was embarrassed by the jacket and looked at it like it was an enemy. Then, the short
story says, I wanted to cry because it was so ugly and so big that I knew I d have to wear it a long

it. He is just complaining about it, he doesn t realize what good it will do to

went through the process of having a drug test and background check, once he completed the tests and
passed them he went through his basic EMT training courses, he the proceeded to complete the EMT
intermediate courses and as soon as he passed those he completed his paramedic training. All of the

After many years serving as both a paramedic and fire fighter he took it upon himself to become a

Essay on The New Negro by Alain Locke
The essay The New Negro by Alain Locke s defines what Locke believes to be the Old Negro and the
New Negro. This paper will compare and contrasts Marcus Garvey The Future as I See it and
Langston Hughes various poems on why Locke would have characterized them as either Old Negroes,
New Negroes, or both. I believe Locke, Garvey , Hughes were determined to see Blacks succeed.
Each writer expresses their idea in their own unique way, but they all wanted freedom, equality, and
respect. For example, Locke would characterize Garvey as the Old and New Negro. For instance,
Garvey writes that it s time for each person to decide on how they will discover freedom. Garvey
writes The hour has now struck for the individual Negro as well as the ... Show more content on

In addition, Garvey writes to the New Negroes about the vision he sees for them. He reminds them
that God created them and because of this you are special and do not allow anyone to tell you
differently. Garvey writes, Remember that you are men, that God created you Lords of this creation.
Nonetheless, Garvey s vision for Negroes was that we can do anything that we set our minds to
regardless of the circumstances that we could face. Garvey writes, Let no man pull you down, let no
man destroy your ambition, because man is but your companion, your equal; man is your brother; he
is not your lord; he is not your sovereign master . (p.1003) Garvey s vision to the Negroes was that
man is not the one you live for, God is the one who will be their with you to the end and he will never
leave you. Also, Locke would characterize Hughes poems as New and Old Negroes. First, in Hughes s
poem Mother to Son; a mother is telling her son that her journey through life has not been easy, but
she will not give up. Hughes writes Life for me ain t been no crystal stair. (p.1292) This mother is
telling her son her life has not been easy but she is still standing. The mother wanted her son to know
no matter how hard times may become don t you give up. Hughes writes So boy, don t you turn back.
Locke and Hughes both were sending the same message; they both were determined to see blacks

Examples Of Prima Facie Case Of Obviousness
In the U.S., when examining a patent application with claims directed to novel chemical compounds,
an examiner may reject those claims under 35 U.S.C. § 103 as obvious over structurally similar
compounds in the prior art. In In re Hass,1the Federal Circuit held that structural obviousness is a

show the property of the claimed compound is different from the prior art compound. The court held
that a prima facie case of obviousness is not made unless the claimed invention is structurally similar.
2 The Federal Circuit established the Hass Henze test to whther the prima facie case of obviousness

Stutter Movie Analysis
The short film Stutterer written and directed by Benjamin Clearly depicts the ways which one s
physical handicap causes social isolation and low self esteem. Set in London, the thirteen minute film
features a young typographer named Greenwood who stutters when he talks. Greenwood s speech
impediment keeps him totally detached from society to a point where he can t build relationships .His
sole form of connection with the outside world is a six month old online relationship with a woman
named Ellie who Greenwood cherishes a lot. At risk to lose the biggest relationship in his life yet,
Stutterer unveils how Greenwood disregards his handicap and comes out of his social closet to meet
his soulmate. Greenwood s struggles are primarily illustrated in the opening scene of the movie. The
camera shot focusses on the character s sweaty and trembling face as he tries to speak to a service
representative over the phone. He stutters, and before he hardly gets a couple words out; the impatient
representative hangs up on him. However, in his thoughts that viewers are able to hear throughout the
whole movie, he doesn t stutter. He is fluently saying I am calling about my phone bill . This incident
with the phone representative is one of the many deceptions Greenwood encounters in his daily life,
and an explanation for his introverted ways. His introverted ways are shown in the scene when he is

Claude Monet Essay
Art has been part of our society since humanity existed. For countless years people been creating,
observing, criticizing and appreciating art. Claude Monet s piece titled Sunrise (Marine) illustrates the
daylight in the industrial port of Le Havre of the north coast, France. This piece was made in March or
April of 1873. The piece s present location is the J. Paul Getty Museum, west pavilion, gallery w204.
The medium is oil on canvas and is next to another piece made by Monet called The Portal of Rouen

Colors are around us and can describe different meanings. When colors are part of an image, painting
or sculpture, however, why do certain colors use and others are not. Monet chose certain colors to
portray different feelings, mood and makes one think. In Patricia Stokes s article Variability,
Constraints, and Creativity explained during her investigation, she decides to investigate Monet s
creativity and separate them into three phases. In phase one, it involved value and wrote: The wheel,
which broke up the light into the four primary hues and their intermediaries, prompted Monet s initial
and initially ill defined goal constraint. In his earlier painting called Mouth of the Seine at Honfleur
(1865), he used earth colors, raw umber, burnt sienna, and blacks. After he stopped using browns and
earth color and later black as well. For Sunrise (1873), he used the colors yellow, orange, blue, green
and brown. What I found interesting is that he muted the colors so the painting looks dull. Even so
orange pops with the muted blue because they are complementary colors that perceive soothing or
balance in the painting.

United Nations Peacekeeping Development And Crisis
United Nations Peacekeeping Development and Crisis
Abstract
The objective of the paper is to review the development of United Nations peacekeeping forces. After
World War II, the United Nations had been given new opportunities to help control and resolve
conflicts. As a result, new tasks and new method had to be adopted in order to adapt the fast world
changing situation and continue growing conflicts which could endanger the international peace.
Therefore, the UN peacekeeping forces play a very important role in keeping peace in conflict regions.
This paper also examines some crisis UN is now facing. It examines whether state participation in UN
peace keeping results from a state s idealistic commitment to the global community and international
peace or whether participation is tied to the state s national interest. With the high profile of UN peace
keeping in this post Cold War era, the answer to this inquiry may suggest to us whether the emerging
international system will be organized on the principles of community or self.
Keywords: United Nations, Peacekeeping, Development, Crisis
I. Introduction
Long before United Nations was created, the concept of peacekeeping has already been brought up by
many nations that has suffered from the World War I. Under the strong demand for an international
organization that takes the responsibility to prevent any possible war to break out, the League of
Nations was founded. The League of Nations was an intergovernmental

New Mexico Pros And Cons
One thousand nine hundred and ten, people authorized the territory of New Mexico to form the
constitution and state government. But the country seat was in fairway Mesilla the village that is now

Arizona almost immediately. In 1888, the New Mexico territorial legislature passed a resolution

favor of statehood.
Roosevelt then urged Beveridge to admit the territories separ. Unlike most other statehood measures
the bill required ratification by the population of the four territories New Mexicans accepted it by an

The Pros And Cons Of Abusive Relationship
What it really means to be in an abusive relationship
Society is very familiar with the terms physical and emotional abuse, whether it is personal or a term
heard in passing. The majority of people want a happy, beneficial relationship not one that is going to
cause more harm than good, yet so many people find themselves in harmful relationships. Why?
People do not just find themselves in repressive relationships, there are many factors in one s life that
contribute to the reasons one may find themselves victims in repressive relationships. When people
think of tyranny what first comes to mind is some of the world s darkest events and the tyrants
responsible for them. More often than not, tyrants are at the forefront to blame for the suffering and
death of so many innocent people. Some historical tyrants that come into mind include Adolf Hitler
and a person he worked closely with, Benito Mussolini. Hitler ruled Germany with absolute authority
in the years leading up to world war two, took advantage of the German people s suffering in the wake
of world war one. He was able to manipulate the German people transforming himself a symbol of
hope at the time, offering the German people a way out of the crippling poverty the country was
stricken with as a result of the loss of world war one. By 1998 Hitler has established a strong support
system and threatened to invade Austria (tyranny citation pg 18). Austria allowed the invasion to

Using The Group Membership Method Resemble Those Found By...
Results in the present study produced using the group membership method resemble those found by
Lusseau et al. (2003) in which the Doubtful Sound population could be divided into three sub groups.
The composition of groups however is somewhat different. This is in part due to different individuals
being present / alive during their study than in the current study. Where all individuals present in both
studies are placed across all three defined groups in Lusseau et al. s (2003) study, all but Kringel fall
into the same single group in the present study. This suggests that, while the overall sub group
structure may have been maintained over time, there is a degree of fluidity among members of sub
groups. This is the very nature of a fission fusion society, where group composition is dynamic over
time (Grellier et al. 2003). The three sub groups may be an apparently permanent feature of the
population when using the group membership method, with the fission fusion nature of bottlenose
dolphins defining the composition of each group through time. It must be noted however that Lusseau
et al. s (2003) study was over a period of seven years, where 546 days were spent on the water. Due to
the immense differences in field effort, direct comparisons are made with caution. Previous pilot
work, which spanned only 6 days, also yielded similar results using the group membership method.

Assessment Task For A Student s Abilities Essay
2. Assessment task review a. Suitability of items Generally, when looking at each items vertically,
most of the columns start with ones which indicates that this skill was easy for the higher ability
students and finish with most of zeros which demonstrates that it was difficult for the lower ability
students. In between, there is a mixture of ones and zeroes breaking down in the column. This
demonstrates that the items in this task are suitable to use to analyse students ability. However, there is
an irregular pattern of 1 s and 0 s for the item 1.2. The less able students could get this skill while the
more able students could not get it. This may be because these students did not have this skill.
Therefore, this item is still suitable to be used to assess the student s abilities. b. Suitability of task to

data in the Guttman chart show that only the student 1 could be able to achieve the highest number of
the items. However, this student did not achieve the last three items 2.2, 4.2 and 7.2, which means that
these three items are difficult to this students in particular or to all of the students in this assessment.

exercise and it did turn out to be, so I would say that I did set a good performance goal. The barriers

roommates and my parents always behind me motivating me to go and also coming with me. They
knew what I was trying to achieve and did everything they could to help me. I personally came over
laziness by holding myself accountable and always going into every situation with food viewing it as

ENG 3c Culminating Assignment The War of the Worlds: Book and movie adaptation comparison By Magaidh Gordon Part A: Summary Text: The War of the Worlds (1898), a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, is the first person narrative of an unnamed protagonist s (and his brother s) adventures in Surrey and London as Earth is invaded by aliens. Written in 1895, it is one of the earliest stories that details a conflict between mankind and an extraterrestrial race. Despite its age, this book is still a widely enjoyed classic, and has inspired nearly 50 movies, 6 Broadway productions, and 2 musicals (one of which I personally own) in its time! The Martians eventually depart, and the narrator is able to head toward Central London. He once again encounters the artilleryman, who briefly persuades him to cooperate in a grandiose plan to rebuild civilization underground. But after a few hours the narrator perceives the lunacy of this plan and the overall laziness of his companion and abandons the artilleryman to his delusions. Heading into a deserted London, he is at the point of despair and offers his life to the aliens when he discovers that the invaders have died from microbial infections to which they had no immunity, since there are no bacteria in Mars. The narrator realises with joy that the threat has been vanquished. The narrator suffers a brief breakdown of which he remembers nothing, he is nursed back to health by a kind family, and returns home to find his wife, whom he had given up for dead. The last chapter, entitled Epilogue, reflects on the significance of the invasion and the abiding sense of doubt and insecurity that it has left in the narrator s mind. Or did that surgeon ever thought of printing that patient s matching heart that s been on the national organ donor list for the past two years? And how about printing the most want it toy for Christmas for your child? Well now you can, by using a 3 D modeling technology printing concept. 3 D (Three Dimensional) modeling technology in the medical field has been an innovation since the 1980 s. This technology has come a long ways. 3 D modeling technology printing is a method of additive manufacturing and built up technique where a three dimensional object is shaped by laying down consecutive layers of material to create an object in a 3 D aspect. • 9. Police Brutality Of Police Officers Recently police have come under fire for the deaths of many unarmed African American males. This has broken the trust between civilians and police and torn our country apart. People are frustrated about the killings of unarmed citizens and how it seems every officer can get away with killing an unarmed suspect. Back in 1994 a law was passed that required the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to record date on police involved shooting and deaths by police officers. Except where are the numbers that would show there is an increase in unarmed African American deaths from police officers? The 1994 law requires the FBI to keep record of police shootings across the United States. However, the only police shooting records that could be found on the FBI website was Justified Homicide From on Duty Officers from 2008 2012 . So the question becomes where is the data that proves there is an increase in African American deaths by the hands of police officers. With the recent outcry of Police Brutality you would think that the FBI would ve released records or started recording any and all police shootings. Experts say that we aren t experiencing an increase in police shootings just an increase in media coverage of police shootings. • 10. Stroop Interference Abstract Interference was examined using the numerical Stroop task as a way to quantify the effects of conflicting stimuli. We hypothesized that it would take more time to complete a counting task than it would take to complete a reading task. During this study participants attempted to process incongruent and congruent stimuli while reporting the time it took to complete each task. Processing the incongruent stimuli required that participants focus on counting the numbers while fighting the inclination to read the numbers. The results showed that this active process produced longer reaction times for the incongruent task. These findings suggest that interfering stimuli are in competition with non automatic stimuli to produce verbal output. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his study using distractor words with similar meanings Finkbeiner (2006) saw that when these words were masked there were obvious facilitating effects (Finkbeiner, 2006). Similarly, results showed that during congruent conditions, congruent stimuli facilitate or improve performance on the Stroop task so that the participant responds faster to congruent stimuli. The time it takes to switch tasks decreases focus, which makes teens slower in their activity ( Keim, Is Multitasking Bad For Us?). In the French society, the rich wanted to stay rich and not pay taxes or accept other responsibilities. The poor demanded change. The difference of opinions created a lot of conflicts because each group had strong opinions on how the country should run. During the immediate period prior to and during the French Revolution, the demands and interests of different groups caused social conflict. For example the Third Estate demanded better voting procedures in order to address the inequality between the Estates. Deficit spending was used selfishly by the First and Second Estate and The King was indifferent to the hunger and poverty of the Third Estate (see right). It was clear that the wealth of the First and Second Estate took advantage of the Third Estate, even though the bourgeoisie had about eighty percent of the French population and wanted human rights. • 20. Mary Shelley s Frankenstein And The Bride Of Frankenstein... It is amazing how words on a page take a life of their own once they are written. An author s story can take readers away on a magic carpet ride, to a magical castle that anything can happen in Britain, even through a wardrobe to a land far away and draft them in the battle of a lifetime. But what is even more fascinating is that unlike humans, the words on the page never changes. From this moment to 200 years from now, the words on this page will always be the same, it is only the reader and the world around them that changes. Take for example Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. In 1818, Shelley had a nightmare that lead her to write her novel as a personification of the Victorian Culture s fascination of science and death. In 1934, director James Whale adapted the material into The Bride of Frankenstein film, and was an allegory for pre WWII unity, then in 1997, someone interpreted the film as a homosexual allegory for the 1990 s. This paper will examine how Mary Shelley adapted her nightmare into an allegory for her Victorian era audience, how James Whale used her original text to turn The Bride of Frankenstein into a message of unity for a pre WWII audience, as well as how Garry Morris uses Whale s film to create a pro same sex marriage message out of the text in 1997. Successful implementation of the Pickens Plan must involve two major shifts when it comes to the U.S. energy consumption: replacing natural gas with wind power as a significant source of electricity generation and replacing oil with natural gas as far as transportation is concerned. If T. Boone Pickens Plan were to be successfully implemented, the global price of oil would decrease because the plan itself would significantly decrease the demand for oil. With a tariff on oil comes an incentive for people to reduce their use of oil and it makes the U.S. much more independent. The domestic oil industry, would highly support this because it protects our home country s producers from the competition of cheap OPEC oil imports. Producers of renewable energy sources would support the tariff because a high oil price makes alternatives to oil more attractive. Particularly, it offers a powerful reason to bring manufacturing back to North America. As shown on the graphs that I have constructed, a tariff though it may result in some dead weight losses, it nonetheless provides the incentive to reduce oil consumption and spending in this country and it also provides tax revenue. When it comes to the positive externality graph based on the emphasis the Pickens Plan places on natural gas in America, one can see the benefits the plan provides for the U.S, economy as a whole. Yes, one can make the argument that there is simply no demand for such a change at all whatsoever, however, assuming there were subsidies implemented for the Pickens Plan, we see demand shift to the right, thus conveying that there will be demand if a good incentive is provided to the U.S. consumers. It would be plausible for the U.S. to cut off spending billions of dollars to foreign countries and spend its money and focus to move vehicles away from oil, and rely on renewable energies such as solar, wind, biofuels, which would in effect, create jobs here in the United States. • 22. Ego Prohibits Self-Awareness In Annie Baker s Body Awareness Ego prohibits self awareness. In the world today many people are nervous of not fitting in with society so they create a big ego to hide behind their flaws. This kind of growth is evident in Annie Baker s first play Body Awareness by one of the main characters, Jared. Jared is a twenty one year old, slightly autistic boy who still lives with his gay parents, Joyce and Phyllis. Joyce and Phyllis have been telling Jared he has Aspergers ever since he was five years old. They found that teenagers who received comprehensive sex education rather than abstinence only or no education were significantly less likely to report a teenage pregnancy. In addition, their conclusions mirrored Sather and Kelly (2002), finding that abstinence based programs did not reduce the likelihood of engaging in sexual activity. Kohler, Manhart, and Lafferty (2008) actually concluded that comprehensive sex education was more likely than abstinence based to reduce the percentage engaging in sexual activity. Overall, the researchers showed that comprehensive sex education, including but not limited to contraception, did not increase the prevalence of sexual activity in teenagers or the risk of teen pregnancy, while also showing the that abstinence only education produced a higher likelihood of pregnancy. Therefore, the UN peacekeeping forces play a very important role in keeping peace in conflict regions. This paper also examines some crisis UN is now facing. It examines whether state participation in UN peace keeping results from a state s idealistic commitment to the global community and international peace or whether participation is tied to the state s national interest. With the high profile of UN peace keeping in this post Cold War era, the answer to this inquiry may suggest to us whether the emerging international system will be organized on the principles of community or self. • 32. An Invisible Thread Dear 9th grade students, For my 10th grade summer reading assignment, I chose to read An Invisible Thread and it ended up being one of my favorite books. This book was an incredible combination of brilliance, emotion, power, and reality that was simply breathtaking. It allows you to really experience two completely different lifestyles through the incredibly astute words of Laura Schroff. As you read this book, you start to imagine how the life of a complete stranger you pass on the street could possibly change your own life if you only got to know them. When you first start to read this book, you realize how much Laura has helped this young boy, Maurice, but as you continue to read, you begin to realize how much he has also helped her. ... • 33. New Mexico Pros And Cons One thousand nine hundred and ten, people authorized the territory of New Mexico to form the constitution and state government. But the country seat was in fairway Mesilla the village that is now present day Las Cruces N.M and the citizens of Tucson began calling for separate territorial status for Arizona almost immediately. In 1888, the New Mexico territorial legislature passed a resolution supporting the creation of an Arizona territory. It would be the land west of north south line about 32 degrees west of Washington D.C. It must be said that New Mexico themselves were not uniformly in favor of statehood. Roosevelt then urged Beveridge to admit the territories separ. Unlike most other statehood measures the bill required ratification by the population of the four territories New Mexicans accepted it by an overwhelming margin not so much out nostalgia. For its former western half but it s the only way to achieve statehood Arizona with its growing Anglo majority however roundly rejected the prospect. On January 6, 1912, after years of debate on whether the population of New Mexico was fully assimilated into American culture, or too immersed in corruption, President William Howard Taft twisted arms in Congress and New Mexico became the 47th state of the Union.[39] The admission of the neighboring Arizona on February 14, 1912 ... The Pros And Cons Of Abusive Relationship What it really means to be in an abusive relationship Society is very familiar with the terms physical and emotional abuse, whether it is personal or a term heard in passing. The majority of people want a happy, beneficial relationship not one that is going to cause more harm than good, yet so many people find themselves in harmful relationships. Why? People do not just find themselves in repressive relationships, there are many factors in one s life that contribute to the reasons one may find themselves victims in repressive relationships. When people think of tyranny what first comes to mind is some of the world s darkest events and the tyrants responsible for them. More often than not, tyrants are at the forefront to blame for the suffering and death of so many innocent people. Some historical tyrants that come into mind include Adolf Hitler and a person he worked closely with, Benito Mussolini. Hitler ruled Germany with absolute authority in the years leading up to world war two, took advantage of the German people s suffering in the wake of world war one. He was able to manipulate the German people transforming himself a symbol of hope at the time, offering the German people a way out of the crippling poverty the country was stricken with as a result of the loss of world war one. By 1998 Hitler has established a strong support system and threatened to invade Austria (tyranny citation pg 18). Austria allowed the invasion to transpire with no objections to the Nazi ... • 35. How Did Jackson Dbq Jackson was not a president of the people. He was hypocritical in the promises he kept for the people, when he created the Jacksonian Democracy . He also created the spoils system, and he was cruel to the Cherokee, and all other Native American tribes. However, some may say that he was a good president simply because he claimed himself to be a president of the people. After John Quincy Adams had become president, Jackson promised the people when he became president, he would give them a voice and reduce the power of the central government. However, when he was elected, he went and created the Jacksonian Democracy. This new way of government, his way, supposedly placed the will of the people above all else, but Jackson still wanted to be very powerful as a president. Jackson was obviously hungry for power, placing himself above the people, breaking his promises and using the people s want for freedom to win them over. As depicted in document C, the people began seeing this side of him too, illustrating him as King Jackson. Above the the picture in document C, the caption Born to Command was written, and below it read King Andrew the First. This picture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the corrupt bargain, Adams made Henry Clay his secretary of state after Clay convinced the House of Representatives to elect Adams as president. Basically, the spoils system and the corrupt bargain were the same thing. Because of the people that Jackson put in office with the spoils system, it also allowed him to make more decisions, because they were all supporters of his ideas. • 37. Using The Group Membership Method Resemble Those Found By... Results in the present study produced using the group membership method resemble those found by Lusseau et al. (2003) in which the Doubtful Sound population could be divided into three sub groups. The composition of groups however is somewhat different. This is in part due to different individuals being present / alive during their study than in the current study. Where all individuals present in both studies are placed across all three defined groups in Lusseau et al. s (2003) study, all but Kringel fall into the same single group in the present study. This suggests that, while the overall sub group structure may have been maintained over time, there is a degree of fluidity among members of sub groups. This is the very nature of a fission fusion society, where group composition is dynamic over time (Grellier et al. 2003). The three sub groups may be an apparently permanent feature of the population when using the group membership method, with the fission fusion nature of bottlenose dolphins defining the composition of each group through time. It must be noted however that Lusseau et al. s (2003) study was over a period of seven years, where 546 days were spent on the water. Due to the immense differences in field effort, direct comparisons are made with caution. Previous pilot work, which spanned only 6 days, also yielded similar results using the group membership method. The seven sub groups defined for the whole population using indices from the time based method ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Assessment Task For A Student s Abilities Essay 2. Assessment task review a. Suitability of items Generally, when looking at each items vertically, most of the columns start with ones which indicates that this skill was easy for the higher ability students and finish with most of zeros which demonstrates that it was difficult for the lower ability students. In between, there is a mixture of ones and zeroes breaking down in the column. This demonstrates that the items in this task are suitable to use to analyse students ability. However, there is an irregular pattern of 1 s and 0 s for the item 1.2. The less able students could get this skill while the more able students could not get it. This may be because these students did not have this skill. Therefore, this item is still suitable to be used to assess the student s abilities. b. Suitability of task to determine ZPDs of the cohort assessed This task is suitable to determine the ZPD of the students. The data in the Guttman chart show that only the student 1 could be able to achieve the highest number of the items. However, this student did not achieve the last three items 2.2, 4.2 and 7.2, which means that these three items are difficult to this students in particular or to all of the students in this assessment. This assessment, therefore, can avoid the ceiling effect for the ZPD grouping process. Moreover, the width of the zone containing a mixture of zeros and ones in the Guttman chart are narrow. The longest width between two nearby zero and one is 4 boxes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They have lovely staff, and people often want to go back, creating repeat customers. Overall Glenmorangie effectively use the marketing mix to be the best distillery, as they are 4th in the ... • 40. Organized Exercise Analysis The goal I choose to follow over the last two months was to have some form of organized exercise a day, whether it be running, basketball, or lifting weights. When I first made the plan, it was to run every morning at 11am and then again at 9pm, and any other exercise that happened to cross my way that day I would also include. However, by then end of my trip I found my plan had changed much from what it started as out. To help with the work of accomplishing this goal, I used two useful tools I had that I thought would make it easier. Firstly, I had my parents send me a text every morning to make sure I was awake and working out, or at least putting in some kind of effort to do something. Second, whenever I went running I brought along my roommate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with the weight loss app and my roommate going with me every day, the goal was on a very steady track to being accomplished. I definitely had enough time as the main goal was just to work out every day and see some change, and doing what was required was just to work out. I made my goal so that it would provide some challenge as I would have to go run twice every day, which would be good exercise and it did turn out to be, so I would say that I did set a good performance goal. The barriers that would prevent me from reaching my goal is laziness, having a poor diet, or doing something that could prevent me from running, but more on that later. I overcame the barriers by having my roommates and my parents always behind me motivating me to go and also coming with me. They knew what I was trying to achieve and did everything they could to help me. I personally came over laziness by holding myself accountable and always going into every situation with food viewing it as fuel and thinking about the affect it would have on my body, which lead to making healthier choices in the ...
