- Increased use of external inputs like fertilizer and improved crop varieties led to higher crop productivity, household incomes from livestock and crops, improved soil phosphorus levels, and greater household food security in Burkina Faso. - Three levels of external input use (no, low, and modest external inputs) were identified among farmers in the study sites, with farmers on different "steps of intensification". - It is necessary to tailor intensification technologies to different farmer input levels to sustainably transform smallholder mixed crop-livestock systems through improved access to inputs, credit, and supportive policies.
