Bachelor of Science in Cardio-vascular technology is an undergraduate course in cardiology. These technologists assist the physicians in the diagnosis and the treatment of cardiac (heart) and peripheral vascular conditions (blood vessels). The cardiovascular technologists are also responsible for preparing the patients for open-heart surgeries and pacemaker implantation surgeries. The technologists also monitor the patient’s cardiac parameters while they undergo the surgery. B. Sc. in Cardiovascular technology is a three years’ full-time undergraduate course and is an interesting and important course in medicine.

10. • A healthy heart is essential to a long and
healthy lifestyle.
• There are many things that can go wrong with
the heart, and sometimes the symptoms that
something is wrong are not always obvious.
• A cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in
diagnosing problems with the heart and
surrounding arteries.

11. While building a picture of your overall heart health,
your cardiologist may:
1. Review your medical records
2. Check and test your blood pressure and
blood vessels
3. Check and test your lung function
4. Run tests such as x-rays, blood tests, or an
electrocardiogram (ECG), or other specialized
tests to determine the problem.

12. A cardiologist is not a surgeon. A cardiac surgeon is
a different specialist who performs the actual
physical heart surgery. A cardiologist is involved in
testing and other procedures.
Some cardiologists specialize in pediatric, or children’s,

14. Invasive Cardiology?
• Invasive cardiology uses open or minimally-
invasive surgery to identify or treat structural
or electrical abnormalities within the heart
structure.

15. Common types of invasive cardiology:
• Angioplasty: When plaque clogs your arteries,
it becomes difficult for blood to flow normally.
Angioplasty inserts a tiny balloon into your
clogged vein and pushes plaque against the
walls, allowing for increased blood flow.
• Stenting: Stenting is usually done in
conjunction with angioplasty. A cardiac stent is
a small metal coil which permanently holds a
clogged vein open.

16. Non-Invasive Cardiology
• Non-invasive cardiology identifies heart problems
without using any needles, fluids, or other
instruments which are inserted into the body.

17. Once your specialist has identified risk
factors or existing conditions, they may
recommend medication and lifestyle
changes to improve your heart’s health.

18. Interventional Cardiology
• Interventional cardiology is a non-surgical option which uses a
catheter – a small, flexible tube – to repair damaged or
weakened vessels, narrowed arteries, or other affected parts
of the heart structure.
