TIMELINE
• 1813: The laws gave Governor-General more freedom to make
reforms.
• 1815: A group formed under the leadership of a high-caste Bengali
Hindu and Ram Mohan Roy
• 1813-1823: Lord Hasting was an important reformer.
• 1829: Lord Bentinck banned the suttee,
• 1829: Lord William was responsible for making suttee illegal
• 1828-1835: Lord William Bentinck was an important social
reformer.

SOCIAL REFORMS AND REFORMERS
Christian missionaries brought challenges to traditional
religious beliefs.
Hindu practices such as suttee, thuggee and infanticide
became illegal.

Suttee-- the former Hindu practice of a widow throwing herself on to her husband's
funeral.
Thuggee—the gang murder and robbery
Infanticide—the killing of babies

SOCIAL REFORMER SIR WILLIAM
BENTICK
• Governor General lord William Bentick was another important social Reformer,
he was responsible for making suttee illegal in 1829
• He also made English the language of government and introduced western
education.
• He included the teaching of English and Western ; Science and technology
• English was later popular amongst hindus,who were allowed to take up
responsible posts in British administration.
• There were some explanation of reason for bentick making reforms in source:
There were benefits for Hindu making reform by bentick.
There were some understanding to these steps that will be seperation from
relegious beliefs and practicing from blood and murderer . Then they will remain
no longer under this excitement , view with calmness , accept truth and be freed
from those chains , they may no longer continue the slavery of foreign conqueror
but the people may continue their first places of mankind in great families .
bentick also wrote about eliminate of suttee.
INDIAN RESPONSES TO BRITISH
• There were reactions also towards British rule by Indians of various groups that;
I. People who rejected everything western and looked back to the past glories of India
II. People who kept their own culture but studied western ideas for more improvement
III. People who borrowed something from west without feeling disloyal for their country and
feeling guilt to it
• Later people who borrowed things from west began to call from their society to take
good aspects intro Indian culture
• In 1815 a group formed for leadership in caste like BENGALI HINDU,RAM
MOHAN ROY
• He also introduced Christian ideas into Hindu society and supported western style
English to India as well.
• Together with missionary William Carley published books attacking to ‘social evils’.
• He believed that widows should be treated better in all ways.
• He wanted people to believe there is one god
• Roy’s modernized type of Hinduism was later to influence Indian national congress.

  • 2. TIMELINE • 1813: The laws gave Governor-General more freedom to make reforms. • 1815: A group formed under the leadership of a high-caste Bengali Hindu and Ram Mohan Roy • 1813-1823: Lord Hasting was an important reformer. • 1829: Lord Bentinck banned the suttee, • 1829: Lord William was responsible for making suttee illegal • 1828-1835: Lord William Bentinck was an important social reformer.
  • 3. CHANGING BRITISH ATTITUDES TO INDIA New ideas of equality, freedom and regarding responsibilities of government Complete political control on the regions of British Changes demanded by the religious, political, and social pressure groups
  • 4. BRITISH INTRODUCE NEW LAWS British East India company lost its trade monopoly Company grew opium to give it as payments Ten thousand pounds was to be spent on education every year. Christian missionaries were allowed free entry into the sub- continent.
  • 5. SOCIAL REFORMS AND REFORMERS Christian missionaries brought challenges to traditional religious beliefs. Hindu practices such as suttee, thuggee and infanticide became illegal. Key words: Suttee-- the former Hindu practice of a widow throwing herself on to her husband's funeral. Thuggee—the gang murder and robbery Infanticide—the killing of babies

  • 7. WILLIAM CAREY A poor shoemaker in England became a brilliant language expert in India. Carey wrote first dictionaries in several languages His interest greatly advanced horticulture in the subcontinent Introduced the steam engine
  • 8. SOCIAL REFORMER SIR WILLIAM BENTICK • Governor General lord William Bentick was another important social Reformer, he was responsible for making suttee illegal in 1829 • He also made English the language of government and introduced western education. • He included the teaching of English and Western ; Science and technology • English was later popular amongst hindus,who were allowed to take up responsible posts in British administration. • There were some explanation of reason for bentick making reforms in source: There were benefits for Hindu making reform by bentick. There were some understanding to these steps that will be seperation from relegious beliefs and practicing from blood and murderer . Then they will remain no longer under this excitement , view with calmness , accept truth and be freed from those chains , they may no longer continue the slavery of foreign conqueror but the people may continue their first places of mankind in great families . bentick also wrote about eliminate of suttee.
  • 9. INDIAN RESPONSES TO BRITISH • There were reactions also towards British rule by Indians of various groups that; I. People who rejected everything western and looked back to the past glories of India II. People who kept their own culture but studied western ideas for more improvement III. People who borrowed something from west without feeling disloyal for their country and feeling guilt to it • Later people who borrowed things from west began to call from their society to take good aspects intro Indian culture • In 1815 a group formed for leadership in caste like BENGALI HINDU,RAM MOHAN ROY • He also introduced Christian ideas into Hindu society and supported western style English to India as well. • Together with missionary William Carley published books attacking to ‘social evils’. • He believed that widows should be treated better in all ways. • He wanted people to believe there is one god • Roy’s modernized type of Hinduism was later to influence Indian national congress.
